Predecessor Pokemon Light & Darkness Versions
Pokemon Eclipse Version is an upcoming Pokemon game for the Nintendo Switch, it is a direct sequel to Pokemon Sun/Moon for the Nintendo 3DS although is part of the 8th Generation along with Pokemon Light & Darkness. It takes place 6 years after the events of Sun/Moon.

Synopsis

Taking place 6 years after the events of Sun/Moon, it is revealed through a conversation the player has with Professor Kukui over their laptop that Alola has changed a lot in the past 6 years, new islands have formed and the landscape has changed due to the effects of Ultra Space in Alola. Professor Kukui explains that he wishes the player luck in Alola and that he apologizes that he can't be there to welcome them due to critical research being done into Kyurem's history. He tells the player that he's had some of his friends come out to welcome the player and help them get started on their new life in Alola.

As the scene transitions to a cave on an unknown island, a large steel door blocks the entrance, shadowy individuals walk up to the door and enter, the camera peers through the small grating on the door to see inside a large warehouse interior with numerous boxes and individuals all standing to attention, the footsteps of the leader of this group can be heard as the camera attempts to peer closer, although the top of their body is obscured the camera shows a well dressed individual bearing a strange ensignia on their coat.

Suddenly however it starts to rain outside and a flash of lightning causes the person holding the camera's shadow to be cast through the grating catching the attention of the individuals, quickly the camera turns around to show Looker and Anabel were watching the individuals inside the warehouse, as the duo quickly begin running the sound of the metal door flinging open is heard as Looker and Anabel continue running across the beach through the storm, the sounds of Pokeballs being thrown are heard as the bellowing roar of a Steelix causes Looker and Anabel to stop in their steps, a Steelix quickly surrounds them preventing their escape as the individuals in the shadows reveal themselves to be a new group of Team Skull Grunts, the leader of the group walks up to Looker and Anabel as the Steelix coils itself around them holding them in place.

The leader merely laughs before turning around and clicking his fingers, the Steelix tightens its grip causing Looker and Anabel to fall unconcious as the camera falls onto the beach shwoing the Steelix carrying the two back to the warehouse as it fades to black.

Returning back to player we see the player arriving at Alola via plane at the newly constructed Melemele Airport, although small it can provide easy access to the island chain where previously only boats could reach them. As the player lands and heads out of the plane they and their mother see three individuals waiting for them; Samson Oak, Hala & Molayne.

Gameplay

Similar to previous Pokemon Games, the gameplay of Pokemon Eclipse is comprised of adventuring through a 3D Environment from a third-person view, exploring numerous locations in an attempt to become the Pokemon Champion and complete the Pokedex.

The player is able to walk, run, sneak and crawl around as well as use In-Line Skates and/or Vintage Skates later on in the game to access areas not normally accessible. Sneaking and Crawling are new mechanics which were somewhat introduced in OR/AS and S/M respectively although had little overall impact on gameplayl. Sneaking has been greatly expanded so that not only is it necessary for catching Rustling Grass Pokemon but must also be used to cross over traps without activating them which occur in several puzzles throughout Alola. Crawling has been properly implemented into the game and allows Players to much more efficiently scout out Pokemon, when in Crawling Mode, players can completely avoid trainers in tall grass and can see the tails of numerous Pokemon in Tall Grass while Crawling. Crawling has been designated to the ZL Button, whereas Sneaking is simply used by barely moving the Left Joystick.

Wild Battles like in previous games occur just as they normally do, however Double Battles return from Black/White along with Dark Grass which is where said battles always occur. Rustling Grass as previously mentioned makes its return function as it did in Black/White & OR/AS, as it allows for rarer and more powerful Pokemon to appear. In addition more terrain types have been added to diversify the types of "grasses" the player will encounter, ranging from rough rocky outcrops to dense snow, marshland reeds and dry desert sands. Horde Battles also make their return once again and have returned to the 1 vs. 5 Format of the old games. SOS Battles also re-appear functioning similarily to how they did in the previous games however Pokemon cannot call for an SOS on the turn when their partner Pokemon faints or the turn after now, making it more fair on the player.

A new Battle mechanic introduced is Ultra Influence, as stated in the storyline, Ultra Energy has leaked through the Ultra Space portals that opened up 6 years ago and has had an adverse effect on the environment of Alola. As such on ocassion during a battle the opening animation will be consumed by fire which is the player's warning that they're about to enter an Ultra Influence Battle. These battles cannot be escaped although are rare, they will begin occuring on Alani Island although returning to Melemele or Akala Island will show that they occur there as well. Ultra Influence causes the Pokemon the player is battling to gain a boost to all its stats and have access to random Z-Moves based on its moveset. After 6 turns the Ultra Influence's Guard effect wears off allowing players to capture the Pokemon although they can also simply defeat it if they prefer.

Trainer Battles return once again with Single, Double & Triple Battles now occuring from standard encounters, although the latter only occurs a few times in the entire journey. Some trainer battles can be avoided by crawling in Tall Grass, however if the player gets within 2 steps of the Trainer and is in the Trainer's line of vision they will spot the player. Like in Sun/Moon there are Elite Trainers who will only challenge the player after they've defeated every other trainer on the Route, due to the New Route System in Alola these Trainers are remarkably harder than their previous counterparts having naturally higher levels than the rest of the Route's Trainers and in general having 5 to 6 Pokemon on their teams. There is also a second Elite Trainer at the end of Victory Road who will battle the player if they've defeated every Elite Trainer in all the Routes of the game. Defeating the Elite Trainers will reward the player with a rare item that can prove quite useful.

There are also several side quests the player can find, one for each island which will reward the player with a Z-Crystal. Players will also find a numerous array of Mini-Game activities scattered throughout the game to test their skills in some manner, winning these can reap various rewards.

As per usual for a Pokemon Game, Trading and other online functionalities return including instantaneous access to the Pokebank.

Pokedex

Due to the changing environment in Alola numerous new Pokemon have appeared throughout the region including some new Alolan Forms. A total of 592 Pokemon are available in the Regional Pokedex with the remaining Pokemon needing to be acquired via other means, which do include the Post-Game Locations.

Alola Region

New Alola

A total of 9 Island Chains exist in Alola. Each one named after a different Colour in Hawaiian (excluding the Aether Island Chain). Players must visit each island, defeat the 3 Trial Captains and then face off against the Trial Master to succeed in that Island's part of the Island Challenge. The challenge is represented by 9 Flowers, 1 for each island. The flowers act similarily to Badges and can be viewed from the Trainer's Case.

Melemele Island

Melemele Island

Melemele Island, the player's Home Island, it is a large island that existed in the Alola Region before the Ultra Beast Event. Melemele is distinguished nowadays for its massive forests which cover the island, making navigation from anywhere other than the coast difficult. The Island is home to the Legendary Guardian, Tapu Koko who protects Iki Town specifically which is located at the heart of the island. The Island's dense forests attract a lot of Grass-Type and Bug-Type Pokemon and many young trainers find their journeys begin hear for the Island challenges.

Melemele Island has 1 City, Hau'oli City as well as 4 Towns; Ekahi Town, Iki Town, Ikanu Town & Kumu Town.

Hala, the Island's Old Kahuna live in Iki Town and acts as the player's mentor early on in the game, his grandson, Hau also lives there and will aid the player for a bit through Melemele Island. Iki Town is also the home of the Trial Ring, an ancient monument to the Legendary Guardians of the Alola Region that is said to be where great battles for those who would take upon the Island Challenge would fight. Although the Island Challenges were re-worked to include the Pokemon League, Iki Town still gets a lot of tourists who come to it each year to witness the ceremonial battles between the Kahunas themselves.

Ekahi Town is a small town that had grown from a single house into an entire town, the place is relatively peaceful and is notable for having Professor Kukui's Lab which has become more open to the public in recent years as Kukui has introduced a Research Program into Alola to investigate the effects of Ultra Energy on Alola. Ekahi Town is overlooked by Ten Carat Mountain, although smaller a few years ago, this great mountain has a Golf Course built upon it and challenges trainers with a test of endurance if they wish to play the sport.

Hau'oli City, the main Tourist destination on the island is notable for its several restraunts and shops that dot the city. The City was expanded upon to the East and North where it now includes an Airport as well as a new Pier. The City is also home to the Battle Mall, a building that has trainers battle against one another for rare goods including clothing, items and even a coveted HM. The City is also the home of the Trainer School which had expanded to include a second building over the 6 years, it is where trainers go to learn the basics of Pokemon Battling and the various responsibilities. Hau'oli City is also Ilima's home, the Trial Master of Melemele Island.

Up North of the Island on the sharp coasts is Ikanu Town, although a few years ago it was a mere Pokemon Center that served to provide Trial goers with a rest stop before the Melemele Island Trial, the town grew upon this Pokemon Center and has several small farms to help support itself. In addition the sharp cliffs make it appealing for sightseers as a man-made cave has been burrowed through the cliffs to give stunning views to the ocean and several intriguing rock formations.

Kumu Town was built upon the islands that raised up from East of Melemele Island's main Island. Although the smallest town in the area it's one of the most interesting. The Town's past states that it was built by three old friends who had drifted apart in their youth but returned once more after a legendary Trainer battled each one, although two of them have since passed on, the third acts as a sort of Elder to Kumu Town and sells medicinal herbs to help Pokemon and the Elderly who call this town Home.

Akala Island is the second largest Island Chain in all of Alola and has some pretty drastic ecosystems. The most notable feature of Akala Island is the massive Wela Volcano, a once inactive volcano that was re-activated by the Ultra Energy causing it to expand over the years. The Island is almost a jungle in the north, becomes farmlands and marshes in the West, is tropical in the east and has highlands in the south. Many residents like to refer to Akala Island as a region within a region due to the sharp ecosystem changes. The Island is home to the Legendary Guardian, Tapu Lele who's described as being somewhat mischievous by the locals and Olivia in particular describes Tapu Lele's actions as "almost child-like".

Akala Island has 3 Cities; Heahea City, Kahaku City & Konikoni City as well as 4 Towns; Paniola Town, Kaiakah Town, Hano Town & Kaloimai Town.

The main port of Akala Island is found in Heahea City which has become a thriving metropolis over the years with many more buildings being constructed making it almost like an urban jungle. Heahea City is also home to several hotels and a large array of shops for people to visit. Heahea City is also the location of one of the major Kala Aether Research Stations and monitors the goings on in Akala Island with regards to the ecosystem. The City is also home to Professor Burnet's lab, the Lead Professor of the Alola Region, although she is off in Unova throughout the player's journey her assistants speak fondly of her and Professor Kukui.

Paniola Town is a friendly albeit rustic town, it seems to have never grown out of its cowboy-life look and a lot of the people who live here love to replicate the old west experience as the Town is the only one in Alola with a Saloon and sells some of the most unique outfits in the region. Paniola Town also is home to the Moomoo Milk Bar which is a restraunt run partially by Miltanks and is the only place where one can buy High-Quality Moomoo Milk. Paniola Town also has a Rodeo that was added to the west-side of the Town to attract tourists, who can attempt to ride a Tauros or a Bouffalant for as long as possible, there are prizes for those who can last past certain times.

Kaiakah Town was built around a Pokemon Center that Trial Goers would use to rest before proceeding to Brooklet Hill, the Town has many Water Wheels around it due to the River Delta which was constructed to make the town protected against the elements. A lot of the townsfolk say that there is a spot in the town where you can here a distinct melody play due to the different water wheels. The town is also the home of Coraka although she almost never stays at her house, although there is a not on her door telling people wherever she is.

Built due to the combined efforts of the Hano Grand Resort and Kahili's personal funds, Hano Town is a luxury resort to say the least. It houses the most expensive and beautiful hotels in all of Alola and is home to Kahili's Great Golf Course, a massive Golf Course that heads further in land. Many of the residents of this town are extremely wealthy tourists or even wealthier locals. Though many have a snobbish attitude they are not one to turn down a fight and often can be challenged on the Golf Course or the Tennis Courts. The beach of Hano Town is its best feature however as the rays of sunlight cause the sand to shimmer like diamonds, however during the night the beach is closed due to the dangers of Moldakulas in the area, apparently the Hotels are looking for someone to pull Night Guard Duty to deal with the Moldakulas.

Kahaku City is well known for having the Battle Royale Dome, and is home to many competitive individuals including Stokua and Kiawe who both frequent the Battle Royale Dome from time to time for some training practice. Kahaku City is also home to the Poke Park a small park located in the south of the City where small Pokemon can play together. The City also features a workout Gym near its Thrifty Megamart where trial go-ers will find Stokua almost all the time.

Kaloimai Town is found in the farth north reaches of Akala Island, although not as popular as the other tourist destinations it has still grown considerably in the last 6 years. Kaloimai Town is almost completely overgrown by the Lush Jungle meaning that sunlight barely breaks through the canopy onto the town giving it a very natural feeling. The buildings in this town are all made out of wood including the Pokemon Center. A major attraction for some people to this town are the Fossil Ruins to the east, after excavation started a few years ago massive amounts of fossils were found near Wela Volcano and this attracted many Archaeologists who apparently according to the locals will fight tooth and nail for the fossils. The Fossil Revival Center is also located in the town for anyone who acquires fossils to revive them.

The City of the Kahuna, Olivia, Konikoni City is quite a spectacle, the city's main road has tons of street vendors who sell all sorts of wares ranging from Pokemon Toys to Herbal Remedies to Strange Pokeballs. Olivia's Stone and Crystal Shop is the largest in the city and has a small quarry surrounding the back of the shop where Olivia and her co-workers can find more stones. The Lighthouse at the end of the City is a tourist attraction as well as it not only doubles as an observatory nowadays but also as a Spiral Slide due to the exterior being added onto over the years. One of the most notable additions to the town is a carnival that was built in the North-West Part of the town that has numerous rides and game stalls where people can earn item prizes or battle one another in the Battle Big Top. The Town's Police Station completely covers the East Entrance to the town forming an Archway to allow for access. The Police are quite friendly although the chief is described as being a lazy coward by the officers.

Alani Island

Alani Island

Alani Island is one of several new Island Chains to crop up in Alola in the past 6 years, due to the effect of the Ultra Energy over a large magnetic settlement found where this island is it was able to grow quite rapidly. The Island is notable for having a large mining complex which interlinks all the settlements via underground tunnels, however access is strictly limited to workers and those that have proven their power against the Trial Captains. The Island has many magnetic rocks that protrude from the ground generating electrical currents flowing through them, they are strongest in Hunaahi Marsh which is filled with them to the point that it allows for Pokemon such as Nosepass and Magneton to evolve simply by basking in its presence.

Alani Island has 1 City; Kauila City as well as 5 towns; Kiniki Town, Keleawe Town, Mekahao Town, Makani Town & Makeneki Town.

Kiniki Town is the first town players will visit upon arriving to when they reach Alani Island. This highly advanced town has its houses float above the water by using magnetic forces placed beneath the rafts. Due to the intense magnetic forces of the island this keeps them afloat while anchors attached to the mainland keep them from drifting away. Kiniki Town residents are quite calm and tend to favour quiet and simple lives, many of them are gardeners and while they might not turn down a fight they much rather prefer to harvest and tend to crops.

The central-most town in the island chain. Mekahao Town is a bustling little place where the many people of Alani Island tend to meet and trade. It is the home of all three trial captains although only Ohia can be found there normally. Pelpa's house in the town is very distinct as it is situated atop a hill and gated off from the rest of the town. Many believe it's haunted by unearthly spirits. The town has a Surfboard Shop and some Surfing Instructors can be found on the beaches of this town with their Raichus giving lessons to tourists, children and the elderly.

Keleawe Town is a small and relatively isolated town on Alani Island. It is home to a few Pokemon Ranches as well as the Pokemon Day-Care. Despite her home being in Mekahao Town and that being where most of her family lives, Ceaph practically lives in this town with her husband. The two not only run the day-care for Pokemon but also for young children as they find that trained Pokemon often play extremely well with children. The town is also the home of the first Tauros Racing Course, an off-shoot of the Rhyhorn Racing found in other regions. Many tourists have flocked to the town to watch the spectacle.

A town in the far south of the Island Chain, Makani Town is nicknamed the town of solitude due to its isolation and mystifying atmosphere. Enthusiasts of spirits and the undead seem to gravitate towards this town, likely because of the large graveyard located around the southern peninsula of the town. Many people go to pray and mourn the Pokemon and people lost over the years, however due to the magnetic forces in the ground this has caused numerous Ghost-Type Pokemon to become restless in the area making it dangerous to visit at night.

Kauila City, one of the largest cities in all of Alola. It is a testament to the dedication and determination of the people of Alola that this thriving metropolis could be built in six years against all the hardships involved. A multi-level city, many buildings have multiple entrances making it easy to navigate the city thanks to its spider web design. The largest tower in the center of the City is owned by Silph Co. and houses the Pokemon Center for the city as well as a Department Store and the Silph Offices. It is Lehua's home as well, he can be found either at work during the day or in his home on the outskirts of the city at night. The City is always bustling with people constantly moving throughout the day. There are many restaraunts and clubs to visit where trainers are known to battle one another in the high tension atmospheres for fame and glory including the numerous office workers who battle to relieve their stress from work.

A small little town in the North, Makeneki Town was built with the assistance of the Meowth and Persian that started appearing on the island. The town is heavily themed after the Pokemon species and has a network of small tunnels for Pokemon of all sorts to explore. Makeneki Town has the Name Rater's Dojo, a building where people go to rename their Pokemon and engage in intense battles where everyone seems to have a catchphrase. There is also a small pond in the west of the town where Fishermen like to gather to catch rare Feebas and Frillish.

Ula'Ula Island

Ula'Ula Island

One of the largest island chains, Ula'Ula Island is the most well known Island in Alola as it is home to the Pokemon League of Alola as well as Po City, the largest city in Alola. Ula'Ula's climate is rather interesting as its three mountains; Mt. Hokulani, Blush Mountain & Mt. Lanakila which each have freezing peaks covered in snow, especially Mt. Lanakila where the Pokemon League is located. However lower down Ula'Ula is a combination of Marshlands, Arid Terrain & Desert making it a true challenge for any Pokemon Trainer to navigate. Ula'Ula Island is also home to the Lost Lake, a spiritual lake that has powerful ties to the people of Alola as it is said to be a connection between the Sun & Moon.

Ula'Ula Island has 2 cities; Malie City & Po City as well as 3 Towns; Tapu Town, Ino Town & Piiana Town.

Malie City is a prominent feature of Ula'Ula Island, heavily influenced by the large population of residents from the Kanto and Johto Regions the city is heavily inspired by the latter region. The Beautiful Malie Garden is said to be a place of upmost tranquility and peace for those who visit it. The City is notable for its many festivals held across the year and attracts many tourists with its numerous stores, hotels and sightseeing locations. The city has expanded over the years and from a distance looks like it hunches over the ocean itself.

Situated atop Mt. Hokulani is Piiana Town, although originally just an observatory for research into spacial anomalies has developed over the years into a technologically advanced town where a small community of scientists have congregated. The Town is plagued by snowstorms however making it quite difficult for anyone to visit and it is generally ignored by tourists, Molayne primarily stays at this town due to his continued interest in the field of science. Interestingly the Trial Captain, Phox lives on the far outskirts of this town although requires navigation via the mountainous tunnels to reach him.

Tapu Town is one of the more well-known settlements in Alola. The townsfolk here dedicate their lives to honouring the Island Guardians and have built impressive feats of architecture. The town has grown significantly from the ruins is used to be due to the assistance of the Aether Foundation, it now has a museum which features the fossils of ancient Pokemon believed to have inhabited the Haina Desert back when it was an inland sea as well as ancient scrolls and wall paintings found in the surrounding area. The town is also home the Oricorio Dance Theater, built by one of the original Kimono Girls this Dance Theater encourages people and pokemon to work together to perform stunning performances that tell vivid stories. Acerola lives in a

Imo Town, located on the West Coast of Ula'Ula Island is notable for being rather overgrown. The town is Primrose's home and is notable for having been built into the natural environment around it without actually changing said environment. All of the houses feature open entrances allowing for Pokemon to navigate about with ease. The town is also described as an adventure escape as the river raft that takes tourists out to the Lost Lake is quite popular.

The largest city in Alola, boasting a beautiful combination of night life and high end hotels, Po City is considered a massive success by Alolans as its past had it considered one of the most dangerous and inhospitable Cities in Alola but due to a turnaround from the Aether Foundation and the disbanding of Team Skull it was able to flourish, although retired, Nanu acts as a sort of figurehead for the town which people often rally behind due to his trust in the ex-members of Team Skull to turn the place around. The city is bustling throughout the day and night with people of all walks of life. The City has a golf course that spans across its skyscrapers forming an impressive ring around the center of the city and the city streets are filled with street performers and shopping stalls as well as the hotels and houses of its residents and tourists.

Polu Island

Polu Island

This Island chain is the only one in the Alola Region notable for being heavily influenced by the tides. While others beaches may receede or expand throughout the day Polu Island will disappear beneath the waves at high tide making the place a popular destination for trainers. Polu Island is extremely marshy and difficult to naviage, it has many destinations that are only accessible during high or low tide or high tide respectively. All the settlements on the islands are anchored to the land but also have flotation devices beneath them to keep them afloat during high tide. Fishing is a major commodity on the island and many people in the towns are in some way associated with this chain of work. There is a clear divide between the city and the towns however as an extremely wealthy family owns a large proportion of the city and often acts rather snobbish around the townsfolk.

Polu Island has 1 City; Enihika City as well as 3 Towns; Eheu Town, Wai Town & Malakeke Town.

The only city in Polu Island, Enihika City is described as the floating Golden Jewel. It's regal appearance is due to the numerous wealthy families who live here. It is home to Woil one of the trial captains. The City is overall a statement to the vast wealth the people who live there have, it has a TM Shop where rare and powerful TMs are sold and also features the Grand Alolan Hotel, a massive hotel situated in the center of the city that is notable for having a pool on the roof of the building.

Eheu Town located in the East of the Polu Ring is described as a peaceful and rather friendly town. The town is home to a children's school where children from all three towns come to visit via Bus Boats. The Town is also the only one on the Island Chain with a Lighthouse which is the only structure connected directly to the land of the island. Eheu Town is the home of Shtoull the Trial Captain and Aina the Trial Master. Many tourists visit the town for its welcoming atmosphere and legendary fishing spots as many reef pools form around the town in the shallower waters during low tide.

Malakeke Town, a small settlement situated on one of the larger islands of the Polu Ring. The town is fairly remarkable for its strong ties to the pokemon Wingull & Pelipper. Totems of the Pokemon and many houses are shaped after the two Pokemon. The town also sells merchandise based off the Pokemon and a building known as the Pelipper Aviary houses many Pelippers that live in a joyous bliss. It is stated that the Pelippers brought food and seeds to Malakeke Town a few years ago to allow them to grow crops even during high tide. This along with their fishing industry have allowed Malakeke Town to remain surprisingly self-sustaining.

Wai Town located in the South of the Polu Ring is a very classical style town with heavy influences from Johto similar to Malie City. The town is primarily made up of retirees although there are a few fisherman as well as Dyrahi the Trial Captain. Dyrahi seems to often get involved in the old plays the town has performed every now and again as he describes it as a good way for him to train.

Lila Island

Lila Island

Lila Island is described as the most unforgiving Island in Alola. Though one of several to appear from the effects of the Ultra Energy Lila Island hasn't grown much since it appeared. The Island is mostly roughlands with some mangrove swamps around the Western part of the Island. The island is only inhabited by the toughest in Alola who can survive against the odds. It is advised by tourists to avoid the island at all costs as the residents of the island consider each day a test of endurance on its own. The Island's folk also heavily follow the beliefs of the Island Guardians and many monuments to the Guardians can be found all across the island most notable a colossal shrine intended to house all four Guardians situated on an Island in the Far West of the chain.

Lila Island has 1 City; Awahia City as well as 3 Towns; Silika Town, Aoao Town & Wailele Town.

Awahia City is the most livable location on Lila Island although is barely a city in comparison to other islands. The place is heavily spread out and most of the people who come to the city during the day live out on Route 24-North and Route 24-South at night. The city is home to both the Trial Captain, Haley and the Trial Master of Lila Island, Plumeria. The city has a large musical following and a hall situated near the docks is where most of these musicians tend to congregate. Awahia City is also home to the Aether Evolutionary Facility, which is dedicated to investigating how Pokemon and plants on Lila Island have adapted to the harsh conditions as well as testing other plants and Pokemon in controlled environments.

Silika Town found in the North of Lila Island is notable for having a Training Gym similar to the one in Kahaku City, it was built due to demand from residents who appear to greatly value their physique over other qualities. The Town is Lana's home after having moved from Konikoni City. It is also the only town on the island to have a significant beach which impressively spans across from the Northern Peninsula of the town to the South-East before becoming Mangrove Forests. The Town is also home to the Black Belt Tower, a tower where Black Belts and other Martial Artists train to become stronger.

Aoao Town located in the West of Lila Island is heavily forested making it one of the only spots on Lila Island to be classified as forested. The town is primarily built from wood and many of its residents live in treehouses constructed by the community. The town is home to the Trial Captian, Caoni who has set up a Honey Farm in the town and is one of its only exports for the island. Caoni often gets help from other residents to create new space for his Honey Farm and many townsfolk consider him a little brother who they like just helping out when he needs it.

Wailele Town is a fairly mountainous town which is known for bordering with Pulu Mountain, as a result the town primarily has its townsfolk at the mines in the Mountain and its houses are mostly carved right into the mountainside. Many consider Wailele Town to be spectacle for the eyes as the beautiful shades of colour in the rocks make the town look incredibly distinct and calming to residents. The town also has a high population of Sudowoodo who act like trees in the higher areas of the town due to the inability for real trees to grow in those environments, many townsfolk also own Sudowoodo that help them in various ways.

Oma'Oma'O Island

Oma'Oma'O Island

A long chain of islands that grew out of the sea over the past six years, Oma'Oma'O Island has incredible bellows of wind blow along it constantly changing the beaches shapes each day. Many residents of the island chain live rather peaceful lives despite this set back, the North island is notable for its beautiful natural environments among its four lakes. Further down south the "Tail" Islands are notable for their shimmering beaches and coral reefs which cover the entire southern part of the island chain. Exeggutor Island located in the Far South is considered a sacred spot by many due to its housing the Flutes of the Sun & Moon.

Oma'Oma'O Island has 2 cities; Maeoi City & Makani City as well as 2 towns; Mole Town & Uapala Town.

Meaoi City located on the Northern island of the chain is described as a tourists dream, the city's residents all work a variety of jobs and the city sprawls itself across the long beach of the Northern Island making it a spectacle at sunrise or sunset with the reflected glass. The city's carnival center located on the docks near the edge of the city is notable for its many rides the most notable being the Exeggutor Tower, an observation tower that many state can give the best view of Alola at its pinnacle. The city has several shops and imports heavily from the other islands with goods such as herbs, evolutionary stones, special Pokeballs and much more. The city also has a Skate Park in the North side of the city where many trainers end up battling one another in a combination of sports and training. The city's most distinguishable feature however is the Pokemon Safari Zone, a large settlement of land that houses rare and exotic Pokemon for trainers and tourists alike to catch at a small fee.

Mole Town found in the north part of of the Island chain, this quite town is home to the Trial Master, Buckis and Trial Captain, Anyni. The town often deals with Anyni's childish behaviour of ending up collecting shiny objects that don't belong to her. Although Buckis can fortunately find where she hoards them and give them back to their rightful owners. The town primarily specializes in mining and jewelry as well as the fine arts. Buckis owns a performing arts theater in the town where many across Alola come to learn from him and the other teachers, the town has a mine where numerous precious gems have been found and mined.

Uapala Town is to many a simple farming town, home to Banyan, the trial captain the town is fairly peaceful. Its residents spend peaceful lives and often enjoy anyone who visits. The town has many Mankeys that help harvest the fruits off the farms. The Mankeys were domesticated by the townsfolk when they moved to the island and have become a reliable source of labour considering the town's small population. Many just pass through the town without stopping, seemingly unaware it even exists.

Makani City located in the south of the Oma'Oma'O Island Chain is a remarkable feat of engineering to say the least, the entire town is held up above the sea by numerous supports creating a unique ecosystem below the city where nocturnal Pokemon seem to thrive. The city itself is highly advanced and features the Alola News Broadcasting Station, where tourists can see the interactivity of the station. The City is also distinct for having the Pokeball depot, the main location where Pokeballs are stored after being imported over from other regions. The city also has a nearby lost 'n found building where the Trial Captain, Amol works though she seems to go missing every now and again only to return with more items for the building.

Poni Island

Poni Island

A rought and untempered island, Poni Island is notably quite dry having much of the island with little to no vegetation. The Pokemon on the island congregate around the lush amounts of green near the coast line making it a favourable location for well-seasoned trainers to go traing during their Island Challenges. The Island is home to the destructive and relentless Island Guardian Tapu Fini who in the past had attacked the island for the people turning against it. The Vast Poni Canyon in the centre of the island is a massive network of caves and canyons that protect the Altar of Light, many people attempt to make the journey to the altar in respect of the legendary Pokemon, Solgaleo & Lunala. Around the East of the Island is a large savannah known as the Poni Wilds which connect to the town that was built around the old Battle Tree.

Poni Island has 2 Cities; Seafolk City & Kahoki City as well as 1 Town; Kekaua Town.

The Seafolk City is an expansive City that is partially located on the sea around Poni Island although due to the increase in land around it a fair amount of the city is located on land now. Traders from across the globe come to this city to trade and tend to stay in Pokemon Style Boats along the shoreline. The City also has a Heliport where the Trial Captain, Coco resides. The City is also home to the Trial Master Mina who owns an Art Gallery Shop in the City.

Kahoki City built around the ancient ruins of an old civilization that used to live on Poni Island but angered Tapu Fini and in its wrath destroyed most of the civilization leaving only a few buildings left, and the ruins of everything else. Although over time Tapu Fini's rage has subdued allowing people to come to the island and create a new city out of the old one. The architecture of the original civilization is extremely prevalent as all architecture including the Pokemon Center is based around the ruins and Hapu's house. The City also has grown coral that is found around Tapu Fini's Chamber all around the city to allow for multi-level access while respecting Tapu Fini's wishes. The City houses the Rotation House, a building where trainers can compete in five short rounds in rotation battles to win various prizes. The town is still the Kahuna, Hapu's home where she lives in the very first house upon entering the city, it also the home of Thuri the Trial Captain whose house is also partially an expedition stronghold that he and his crew reside in.

Once the location of the Battle Tree, the town known as Kekaua Town was built upon the tree once people began looking elsewhere for powerful battles. The tree still stands although now houses all the buildings of the town except the Pokemon Center. The houses hand from the treese gigantic branches which over the years have been supported and grown by the townsfolk. The houses hang like Coccoons from the tree and many residents describe it as a very unique way of living. The town has a museum at the canopy of the tree that is dedicated to the history of the Vast Poni Canyon & Battle Tree. In the night many Bug-Type Pokemon are known to congregate around the tree.

Aether Island

Aether Island

An artificial Island that is the Headquarters for the Aether Foundation's Alola Division. Additional islands that have appeared around the foundation have been added to its territory although the foundation has become more like a city than a research station. The Aether Islands are the smallest set of islands in Alola although do house their own Trials as well. There are some ancient ruins from an old sea-faring civilization that used to live in Alola that can be found in the waters between the three chains that seem to act as a passageway to get from one set of islands to the others. The Islands are rarely visited by tourists as the Aether Paradise is more a gathering place for Alolans and the other island chains are uninhabited.

The Aether Paradise is the only City in the Island Chain.

A large and somewhat overgrown city, the Aether Paradise was constructed originally to research and investigate Pokemon looking at the effects of Ultra Beasts. After the incident six years ago it was repurposed into a proper city and while research is still done it is much more closely monitored and the entire underwater section has been rebuilt to be more open and friendly to the public. The main part of the rig  has been expanded with two docks added on each side and houses, shops, a Pokemon center and a Pokemon Lab all situated around the main building complex. The City looks extremely advanced even in comparison to the more modern Alolan Cities due to the need for advanced technologies and the expenses the Aether Foundation was willing to go to.

Gladion will often have to force Lillie to relax as Lillie gets easily burnt out by overworking. Gladion has tried to restore his relationship with Lusamine although she fears Gladion and makes it difficult for him to approach her let alone talk to her.
Lusamine Aether Foundation CEO Lillie and Gladion's mother, Lusamine isn't anything like her previous self, talking to her indicates that she seems to have locked away the memories of her past before she fused with Nihilego. In addition mentally Lusamine seems to have regressed, lacking the extensive knowledge on Pokemon and conservation she used to have. Lusamine also acts timid around strangers and will often avoid public spaces and eye contact either out of shame or fear, Lillie has repeatedly tried to get Lusamine to socialize although with little success.
Hunaa Head of Security The head of security on Aether Paradise, Hunaa takes his job way too seriously and has a pack of Poochyenas that will chase anyone he deems suspicious even if it is unwarranted, Hunaa also seems to think he is the greatest Security Officer ever although when Nanu visits he's put in his place as Nanu reminds him of the rules they must follow.
Ho'oh Head Mechanic Often confused for the Legendary Rainbow Bird, Ho'oh is a rather goofy individual as while he is quite good at his job, keeping the Aether Paradise structurally afloat he also likes to crack jokes all the time which almost always fall flat since Ho'oh's jokes tend to be specifically about machines. Koa

Trial Captain

Field Researcher

Koa seems to constantly live in Noni's shadow feeding her ego due to her bossiness, Koa does seem to have a lot of pent up anger though that has caused Wicke to try and talk to him to relieve the stress as she's concerned he will go into an outrage at his sister one day.
Wicke

Aether Foundation Regional CEO

The Regional CEO of Alola's Aether Foundation, Wicke watches over Alola with a caring demeanour and tries her best to keep the people and Pokemon of Alola safe from its every changing environment. Kopunawe Team Necro Skull Admin The youngest Necro Skull Admin, Kopunawe rose up to Admin after Necro Skull formed due to her creepiness towards the Grunts making them fear her. Kopunawe is a trickster and will attempt to act innocent and naive around the Player Character before revealing her real personality, she is a vicious trainer who has a particular hatred towards Hau for his light-heartedness. If she loses a battle then she will throw a tantrum and fling insults at whoever bested her.
Eleanemake Team Necro Skull Admin Cold and calculating, Eleanemake is one of the least liked Admins in Team Necro Skull, he got his position for his expertise with machines and computers and has caused issues due to him tampering with circuits. He also has little value for human life and will threaten his grunts with torture if they fail him.
Powa Team Necro Skull Admin A strange individual, Powa likes to scare her grunts making them all constantly shake in fear. Powa actually hides using her Ghost-Type Pokemon to scare the Player and will laugh almost all the time, even if the situation is uncalled for. Honuhine Team Necro Skull Admin A strange Admin for sure, Honuhine is a connoisseur of food across Alola despite him clearly being a member of Team Necro Skull. He has a particular fondness for Malasadas and will often get his grunts to simply block the entrances to restraunts and shops so he can enjoy a meal without interruptions. If someone gets in the way of Honuhine and his food they should expect a battle as it will send Honuhine into a blind rage, even if he's defeated he will literally charge through whomever is in his way and take his food and flee.
Hoolua Team Necro Skull Admin Hoolua creeps almost every grunt out even the ones devoted to her, she is nicknamed the Temptress by her Grunts who seem to have been specifically chosen because they are captivated by her voice. Hoolua in reality cares little to nothing for her grunts and will send them to fight trainers who get in her way with little care for their well-being. Hoolua is herself obsessed with Guzma and is the most vocal Admin about wanting his return, some reckon that Hoolua loves Guzma more than her grunts love her.
Papunawele Team Necro Skull Admin Some people reckon Papunawele is the long forgotten Kahuna who helped form Team Skull in the first place although no one is certain. Papunawele is by far the oldest member of Team Necro Skull and likes to jabber on about how nowadays young people have no respect for the elderly, despite his almost senile demeanour, Papunawele is extremely cunning and will bring those who fight against him into traps to either slow them down or stop them completely, he carries around a staff with his emblem on it which he uses to hit his grunts with to as he puts it "knock some sense into their empty heads".
Kamolana Team Necro Skull Boss Abusive and relentless, Kamolana is by far the scariest member of Team Necro Skull, despite her only being about as old as Lillie she is a genius and a born leader. She displays a sense of disgust towards the Aether Foundation and blames them for trying to cover up what happened to Alola with her ultimate goal being to cause Alola to be destroyed as punishment for Aether's arrogance. Kamolana used to be a member of the Aether Foundation and is Wicke's neice, despite this Kamolana hates Wicke more than anyone else as no matter what Kamolana does Wicke never gets angry at her. Kamolana also carries around a powerful sound device that lets out an ear piercing howl to allow for her to escape.
Guzma

Ula'Ula Kahuna

Elite Four Member

The secretive fourth member of the Elite Four. Guzma after realizing the danger he would be in if Team Necro Skull found him decided to go into hiding leaving Molayne and Nanu to act as the temporary leaders of Ula'Ula Island until something could be done about Necro Skull. Guzma is genuinely ashamed that despite his efforts he couldn't stop Team Skull from reforming, he also feels guilty for the damage that was caused to Alola due to the Ultra Energy.
Looker International Police Agent A friendly although kind of goofy individual, Looker is an agent of the international police and takes his job very seriously, almost to a fault. Anabel International Police Agent Looker's immediate superior, Anabel is believed to have come through an Ultra Wormhole from another universe, her past is completely unknown although seems to do little to phase her. She tries to keep a cheery demeanour regardless of the circumstances although is remarkably powerful when it comes to Pokemon Battles as her powerful team of Pokemon keeps her ready for whatever a situation may throw at her.

There are four Flowers scattered around the garden which is shaped like a maze, the garden has a wooden wheel near the middle that will turn the entire center of the garden 180 degrees which is required for watering all the plants. As the player waters each plant they will bloom except for the last one, some will contain items like nectars while others will have wild Pokemon hiding in them like Cutiefly and Grubbin.

Once the player has watered the flowers Daiso will call to the player from her house's balcony and ask the player to put the Wailmer Pail back on the pedestal in the middle of the Garden. The player does so and this causes the pedestal to drop down slightly, the last flower blooms and the Totem Pokemon charges out of it attacking the player. Depending on which flower is the last one to bloom will depend on which form the Totem will take.

She will then tell the player that Ilima said something about waiting for the player on the docks in Hau'oli City and that he seemed all sentimental just talking about it.

Ilima's Grand Trial

Arriving at the Docks of Hau'oli City Ilima will great the player asking them if they're ready to face their first grand trial, after the player responds with yes Ilima will explain that Grand Trials are intended to be the toughest trials on an island and that he has prepared the player with a fairly simple challenge since it is their first one.

Ilima informs the player that around the docks there are some pesky Rattata's that have been scaring the tourists, Ilima states that normally he would simply shoo them off but when he tried to capture one it ran off and that's how he got the idea for his Grand Trial.

The player then begins searching the docks for these Rattatas, there are five in total however approaching them causes them to run away, so the player must find ways to corner the Rattatas and battle them. The first two are simple enough as it merely requires the player to approach them at the correct angle. The third and fourth Rattatas require the player to push some small crates around to create dead-ends for them to run into. The fifth and final one which is in fact a Raticate will require the player to chase it in and out of a warehouse with the player needing to block off the entrances into the warehouse so they can defeat the Raticate. After defeating it Ilima will call to the player having them quickly return to Ilima. He congratulates the player on a job well done and explains that across Alola those who help one another can expect good things in return, Ilima will then heal the player's Pokemon and ask them if they're ready to battle, the player responds and the battle begins.

Ilima explains that Z-Crystals are said to be condensed energy that comes from a completely different world to our own and that the Tapus also come from that world although merely changed into the forms people recognize them for. He states that the energy within a Z-Crystal is unlike anything anyone has ever seen although it has an incredible reaction when exposed to Ultra Energy as the two literally destroy each other, so Pokemon Researchers across Alola are lookign for ways to harness the Z Energy to stop the crisis that is being inflicted on the Alolan Islands. Ilima tells the player they should return to Iki Town and talk to Hau who should have the other half ready for the player.

Akala Island Trials

Stokua's Trial

Stokua's Trial actaully takes place within the Workout Gym where he can be found, Stokua explains that he believes that anyone wanting to complete the Island Trials should be as fit as possible and so he's set up a workout trial to see if the player has what it takes to endure the Island Trials. Stokua explains that scattered across the Gym are various workout instructors who'll test the player and that the player must find and complete their workout sessions to meet Stokua's expectations. There are four Workout Instructors; Kuina, Keehi, Kauoha & Alo.

Kuina will have the player try out the Rhythm Mini-Game encountered in several areas of the game, music will play in the background as the player must punch a punching bag in time with the music. There are three phases to this mini-game with each one being faster and more complex than the last. After completing the mini-game the player will accidentally knock the punching bag off its support causing a nearby Hariyama to get angry and attack. Keehi will have the player sprint along a travellator to get to the other side, once the player does so the travellator will short circuit causing a nearby Mankey to get angry and attack. Kauoha will have the player go outside to a small maze where brick walls have been set up, the player must use their Tauros to charge through a certain number of walls to reach the end, if they charge through too many then Kauoha will stop them and have them start over, there are two mazes the player must complete the second one has rotating walls making it more difficult. Once the player completes Kauoha's session a Hawlucha which was roosting nearby will become enraged from all the noise the player was making and attack. Alo has the player move into the middle of a ring, the player is informed that they will be playing a game of dodgeball and several Pokemon surround the ring, the player must avoid the dodgeballs for 15 seconds, upon completing this task the Breloom that is the leader of the Pokemon will stamp its feet in frustration and attack.

After completing all four sessions and defeating the respective Pokemon that attacked the player can return to Stokua who asks the player to come outside with him. The player does so and Stokua explains that despite his Workout enthusiastic exterior he's in fact a geologist at heart and has had a fascination with rocks after meeting Steven Stone when he was younger, Stokua explains that the Totem Pokemon for his trial is no Fighting-Type but a Rock-Type and will be waiting for the player at the Asteroid Crater to the east of the City.

Coraka's Trial

Coraka will actually move around the North part of Akala Island throughout the day, she can be found in one of five locations depending on the time.

  • 00:00 - 5:00 - At the Pokemon Nursery
  • 5:00 - 10:00 - At the Entrance to Wela Tunnel
  • 10:00 - 15:00 - At the Aether Outpost in Far North Akala Island
  • 15:00 - 20:00 - In the Lush Jungle
  • 20:00 - 24:00 - At Brooklet Hill's Entrance

Upon talking to her, Coraka will explain that she's kind of busy with her run at the moment and tells the player to meet her in Route 5-North where her Trial Gate is situated. Once the player gets there, Coraka will arrive informing the player that her Trial is all about using your environment to help you, she explains that the Totem Pokemon the player seeks is at the end of Brine Reef, a cave in Route 5-North.

When the player enters the cave they will find that the water is too salty for Sharpedo to swim in and that they must create an alternate path across, this involves climbing up to the higher levels of the Cave to knock down Stalactites and find a wooden plank somewhere on the bottom level to cross the Brine Water. Once the player clears this they will find a large chasm, there are two options on how to pass this one, the player can either find five Pyukumukus located in the area which when defeated will form a chain crossing the chasm or the player can work their way around the outside of the cave and find a Diggsby Mallet which can be used to knock parts of the wall to form a staircase across.

Once the player gets past these obstacles they will reach a part of the cave where the water is much clearer and actually requires the player to use Sharpedo to surf across, once the player reaches the island in the middle, they will hear Coraka whistle from above, the player looks up and sees that she seems to be signalling although what they're not aware of is that she's actually signalling the Totem Pokemon to attack, as a giant Selavalyll leaps out of the water.

Coraka will then give the player the TM for Mud Bomb before running off wishing the player luck with their remaining trials.

Kiawe's Trial

Kiawe will be waiting for the player inside Wela Tunnel next to a large boulder, he will inform the player that he'd been waiting for them to complete the other trials and was impressed with the player's efforts, he hands the player the HM Upgrade Boulder Charge and tells the player that he will be waiting at the Wela Volcano Crater to begin their trial.

The player then works their way through the Wela Volcano caverns, solving various puzzles around the giant boulders as well as dealing with the Fire-Type Pokemon that inhabit the caves. Eventually the player will reach the summit where Kiawe will greet them at the entrance of the crater, he explains that the crater's recent activity has caused several holes to develop in the side of the volcano causing lava to leak out, he informs the player that Totem Pokemon likes to rest within the lava itself and will only come up if the platform in the center is raised and that plugging the holes in the side of the volcano with the giant boulders scattered across will increase the lava level.

There are three holes for the player to push the boulders over, the ground above the holes is weak enough that when a boulder is put over it it will collapse. It is required to push the rear boulder into its hole first as the lava from its hole prevents the player from accessing the second and third boulders. Once the player has completed this task a rocky platform will rise up from the lava and quickly solidify to the wall of the Volcano crater. The player will see the Totem Pokemon dozing off in the middle of the platform and walk up to it, Kiawe will follow the player surprised to find the Totem Pokemon asleep. Kiawe will yell at the Totem Pokemon berating it for not doing its job causing the Totem Pokemon to in a panic attack.

Kiawe will give the player the TM for Flame Charge and tell them to head off and go find Mallow while he gets Salazzle to stop being so sentimental.

Mallow's Grand Trial

The player will find Mallow waiting in Paniola Town stating that she wanted to have a showdown like the Cowboys in the Wild West Movies although her "gang" was missing stating that Coraka had turned up but Stokua was missing and Kiawe was late. Slightly flustered by this Mallow asks the player if they could go speak to Stokua, the player obliges and heads back to Kahaku City to talk to Stokua, however Stokua will adamantly refuse stating that there's no way he's going to go along with Mallow's silly games.

Returning with this news to Mallow, she'll sigh telling the player that the only way they're going to get Stokua to come along is to get the ingredients for Mallow's Special Dish, she informs the player that they'll need to head into the Lush Jungle and track down the following; Cheri Berry, Figy Berry, Razz Berry, Tomato Berry & Occa Berry. She explains that she'll need to get the rest of her stuff set up and that the berries are usually being carried around by the Fomantis in the Jungles although the player will have to sneak up on them to make them drop their berries.

The player heads to the Lush Jungle and sneaks up on Fomantis located in each major section of the Jungle to acquire the five berries needed. Returning to Mallow she cooks up her special dish and hands a serving of it to the player, she tells the player to give it to Stokua and tell him that if he doesn't come she'll give the rest to the Miltank and Tauros. Mallow also advises the player not to eat it even if Stokua offers it to them as it is unbelievably spicy even by Mallow's standards and she never understood how Stokua could like it. The player returns to Stokua and gives him the special dish, Stokua gladly accepts and states that he'll agree to come along and asks the player if they'd like some, the player will eventually have to cave in to Stokua's question revealing that the dish is indeed as spicy as Mallow had said.

Stokua hurries on ahead of the player telling them to get ready for a wild western showdown. The player returns to Paniola Town where they find Mallow, Stokua, Coraka & Kiawe all dressed up like Cowboys, Mallow tells the player that she hopes they're ready for a true battle as she won't hold back. The player agrees to Mallow's challenge and the battle begins.

Mallow will tell the player that ever since the changes to Alola started to happen she knew that the Lush Jungle would become too dangerous for her to hold her Trials in and so she preferred to only use Lush Jungle as a last resort if Stokua refused to come along. Stokua apologizes to Mallow and states that he didn't realize she was so serious about the Grand Trials. Mallow tells Stokua that in order for her to be the best Trial Master she can be she has to make sure there is a challenge for anyone who challenges her. Mallow then tells the player that they'd best head through Diglett's Tunnel to Konikoni City since there's a ferry that can take them to their next island.

Alani Island Trials

Pelpa's trial begins at the graveyard entrance in Makani Town. She explains to the player that she will be testing the player's memory and will have some of her Psychic-Type Pokemon move around the graveyard and that the player will need to perform this several times to calm the spirits of the Graveyard to allow the Totem Pokemon to appear. As the player enters the graveyard Pelpa's laughs creepily although quickly dismisses the player's possible suspicion and tells them to hurry in.

The player will get a bird-eye's shot of one area of the graveyard where Pelpa's Pokemon are. Pelpa will ask the player to keep an eye on a specific Pokemon which is random each time, said Pokemon will raise its head above from behind one of the tombstones and make its cry. The Pokemon then move around as Pelpa tries to distract the player with a pointless conversation about twisting spoons with the mind. The player must then figure out where the Pokemon she specified was and cause it to stand up, however this is easier said than done as psychic barriers create a maze-like structure for each area which the player must navigate. Upon doing so the player will be ambushed by a Ghost-Type Pokemon behind them forcing them into a double battle between the Psychic-Type and Ghost-Type Pokemon.

The potential pairing of Psychic and Ghost-Types are as follows;

  • Drowzee & Dusclops
  • Hypno & Duskull
  • Kadabra & Haunter
  • Alakazam & Gastly
  • Espeon & Sableye
  • Smoochum & Mismagius
  • Jynx & Misdreavus

After this task has been performed at the four sites which Pelpa's claims are unpure she will appear in the middle of the graveyard and wait for the player to return. Once the player does so she explains that her Totem Pokemon had been missing for a long time and she was hoping that the Ghost-Type Pokemon would be able to be powerful enough to ward off the player, however it was not evidently so. She congratulates the player and hands them her emblem for the Alani Flower and wishes them luck with the rest of their trials.

As the player heads to the entrance of the Graveyard they'll find the entrance has been blocked off by an impressively sized tree trunk. With no other option the player heads back to Pelpa, however a thick fog begins covering the graveyard as Ghost-Type Pokemon appear and vanish rapidly around the graveyard, in addition two layouts of psychic walls will gradually appear and disappear forcing the player to work through a changing maze. Eventually the player will reach Pelpa who has collapsed in the middle of the graveyard, just as the player approaches however a psychic force lifts her body into the air and casts it aside as the Totem Pokemon erupts from the Fog in an impressive roar.

Pelpa pats Oranguru's head as it heads off back into the trees surrounding the graveyard. Pelpa explains that Oranguru likes to make a grand entrance and so sometimes she has to play along with that, she informs the player that she was incredibly impressed the player was able to get through Oranguru's tricky maze and gives the player the TM for Psychic stating that Oranguru has already moved the fallen log so the player is welcome to leave whenever they like.

Ohia's Trial

Ohia then heads out with the player following suit. Soon they reach the beach where Ohia is waiting with his surfboard and guitar. Ohia asks the player if they've ever surfed before, if the player has already played the Surfing Mini-Game prior they can answer yes, otherwise they'll answer no and Ohia will explain to them how the surfing Mini-Game works, informing the player that he'll help them with the rhythm of the waves by playing music of an applicable rhythm. Ohia then hands the player a Surfboard stating that they can keep it if they want since he's got tons of them and they're of higher quality than the ones at the Surfing Outposts on the other islands. As the player and Ohia head out into the ocean some waves start forming and Ohia tells the player to keep up because they won't make it through this trial without proper balance and timing.

As Ohia begins playing his song, the player must move with respect to oncoming obstacles with the rhythm of the song as well as adjust their position in the wave to prevent them crashing into it. As the player completes the first mini-game Ohia will talk to the player in the water telling them that there's another wave coming up they'll need to surf as well before Ohia can be sure they have their balance and timing down. A second wave begins this one being more complex as the jump button and dodge button must be used in quick successions. In addition Ohia now plays a faster song with a more complex rhythm to it meaning the player must be more attentive than before.

Eventually however the player will be able to surf the wave for the entire song much to Ohia's surprise. As the player and him return to shore he tells them that he's really impressed and that the player should consider becoming a surfer if the Island Challenge doesn't pan out. The player then questions Ohia about the Totem Pokemon, Ohia then laughs and tells the player that the Totem Pokemon was just over near some trees at the far end of the beach resting and the player can challenge it whenever they feel like.

The player begins approaching the Totem Pokemon however is ambushed multiple times by several beach dwelling Pokemon including Pyukumuku, Staryu, Starmie, Sandygast and Palossand. Unable to find any of the others the player returns to Ceaph who explains that she thinks the farmhands might've picked some of them up and she'll tell them to leave them in the ranch for the player when they go through. There are 4 Puzzles and Riddles for the player to solve, the puzzles revolve around light puzzles through glass. After solving the first riddle the player will enter a large cave-like room with instructions on how to solve the puzzles.

"These Light Puzzles will test your ability to combine multiple elements together to solve them. The Light beam can be moved around with the controls at the entrance to each room and the light must be shot into the signals to open the exit to the next area. In addition there are multiple pieces of glass that will refract the light sometimes splitting it into multiple beams, the angle of these beams can be changed by heating up or cooling down the pieces of glass, each control panel will have temperature dials for each glass piece in the room"

Each room's puzzle becomes more difficult with the first having a single piece of glass and one light source whereas the final room has multiple reflective walls, two light sources and three pieces of glass.

Meanwhile inbetween these rooms the player will find a riddle that will hint to the player where the secret entrance to the next puzzle room is, though they start of easy they become more difficult with the last one being a specific floor panel relative to four pieces of furniture. Once the player has solved all the puzzles they will reach Phox who's shown to working hard in his workshop. He greets the player cheerfully stating that they must have been quite ingenious to have solved his puzzles. He explains that he doesn't like the idea of having a big showy trial and instead decided to go for something more secluded like himself.

When pressing Phox on the Totem Pokemon, Phox sighs and asks the player if they'd heard about the Festivals in Malie City, depending on the player's response Phox may go into detail about the festivals held in Malie City. He will specify a festival known as the Festival of Twin Dragons stating that he performs in that festival due to him able to remain masked and hidden from the public, Phox then asks the player if they can perform the role of the Red Dragon explaining that the man who usually performs the role won't be able to turn up to the festival that night and without the Red and Blue Dragons the Festival will be significantly less impressive. The player accepts Phox's request and Phox begins explaining the dance technique the player will learn as the screen fades to black.

The game transitions to night as the Festival takes place, a cutscene where Phox and the player perform the dance in unison surrounded by an immense crowd and dressed in the attire of the dragons. As the dance comes to a close both Phox and the player launch fireworks into the sky to replicate the Dragons' fiery breathes, as this happen an earth-shaking bellow is heard from the North of the City as the Totem Pokemon approaches and attacks the player during the festival.

After defeating them both, Hunter and Amy sigh stating that they're sorry they didn't live up to Acerola's expectations, although Acerola just laughs and tells them both that they did fine and that battling is not always about winning but gaining experience for future battles. Acerola then tells the two to head back to the Aether House and check on the Pokemon while she gets the player ready for their Trial. The two head back as Acerola walks up to the player, she states that she's been getting Hunter and Amy to battle Island Challengers to train up their own Pokemon and she thanks the player for being willing to battle them.

Acerola then allows the player access into the Haunted House stating that they'd best be careful because the Ghost Pokemon are known to do strange things and the player might not be able to get out otherwise. The player enters the Haunted house to find it has an unsettling atmosphere to it, paintings will follow the player's movement some pieces of furniture will float around the place and shadows of Ghost Pokemon will randomly attack the player while they're in here. The player will gradually learn that the four doorways present in each room will lead in different directions and that the player must follow a single colour for 8 consecutive rooms.

This is found simply by wandering through four rooms with no repeating colours where a note left by Acerola will inform the player they should try entering through doorways sharing the same colour. The trick is that many rooms will try and hide their colours, some can have furniture that is of the colour, others will use floormats or wall colours, the door frame itself or even Pokemon that guard the doorways in the later rooms. The player will not be able to escape the Haunted House until they've completed the trial unless they use an Escape Rope which will forfeit the trial like with any other.

If the player goes through eight Red Doorways they'll find a room with the TM for Shadow Claw. By going through eight Blue Doorways the player will find the Reaper Cloth and a Dusk Stone. Progressing through eight White Doorways will take the player to a secret room in the house where Acerola had left a diary talking about the Totem Pokemon, accounting that it'd been acting strangely the last couple of months and seemed to be unusually restless as though it knew of something ominous. Lastly by going through eight golden doorways with the last one always being a Pikachu Doll the player will enter a strange bedroom where a large pile of Pikachu Dolls lay in a corner and a beautiful bed sits in the middle next to the Pikachu Dolls and a regal looking Wardrobe. A desk is situated near the entrance with a book that was written by Acerola's late father which reveals that their family had fallen on hard times when her grandfather hand been stripped of his vast wealth by Tapu Bulu in a fit of rage and that Nanu had been a long time friend of Acerola's father and helped him keep ownership of the Library, one of the last remnants of the Royal Family's wealth.

Acerola somewhat annoyed at the Haunter turns around and tells it to cut it out, the Haunter appears and Acerola pulls a funny face back at the Haunter catching it off guard. The Haunter then responds with a different funny face as Mimikyu continues to laugh, Aceroal then turns to the player and tells them that they'd best head out since this could go on for a while. The player and Acerola exit the Haunted House and Acerola gives the player her Emblem. She tells the player that she had a TM for them as well although she must've left it in the house and the player is welcome to get it if they want. He informs the player that since they'll need to find her to take on her trial they should look there.

The player heads to the Mushroom Grove and enters it where it was previously blocked by a Police Officer who was ordered to keep people out of the Mushroom Grove. As the player enters they are surprisingly immediately greeted by Primrose who is sitting on a rock near the entrance, she tells the player that she's been cursed by an evil being that lurks in these woods. The Shiinotic now calm lets out a joyful cry as Primrose slowly walks into the main section, happy to see her Totem Pokemon's young are safe she apologizes to Nanu that she'd lost control of the Totem Pokemon. Nanu sighs and tells Primrose that she needs to talk to Acerola about her Totem Pokemon because as Nanu puts it "Acerola understands the Totem Pokemon better than any Trial Captain and probably any Kahuna for that matter bar Hala". Primrose nods in agreement and walks over to Shiinotic to talk to it.

Primrose tells the Shiinotic that they'll be going on a small adventure soon and that it should get ready to head out, the Shiinotic nods in agreement and puts its three Morelulls on top of its head. Shtoull waits for the player at the other end and asks the player how they went.

The player replies although regardless of what they see Shtoull will state that he's glad they're doing fine and are eager to continue the course. Aina tells Shtoull that throughout that entire trial he had been incredibly tough and didn't act up at any instance, Shtoull asks Aina if she really means that and she agrees. Shtoull elated by the response gives Aina and the player a hug much to Aina's annoyance, however Shtoull notices that his Vibrava is still hovering just off the coast, he wonders what its doing and then suddenly notices that it's evolving. Shtoull runs out into the ocean after his Vibrava as Aina informs the player that she wishes them luck because that Vibrava is going to want revenge for the player beating it.

Dyrahi soon gets up from his injury and asks Nalu why Aio hit her, Nalu tries to explain Aio's relationship to Dyrahi but before Nalu actually states the fact that Aina and Aio love each other Dyrahi exclaims that they must just be really good friends, Dyrahi then states that Aio must think that Dyrahi wouldn't want Aina to be friends with Aio if they got together to which Dyrahi then laughs at his own comment and tells Aio that they can still be friends before proudly marching off. Aio and Aina sigh and Aio asks Aina why she keeps Dyrahi hired to which Aina merely responds that he's the best trainer in Wai Town and if anyone ever surpassed him she'd fire him on the spot.

Aina then walks over to the player and congratulates them on completing the Polu Island Trials and states that she's glad to give the player the Water-Type Z-Crystal. She apologizes for her captains once again and tells the player that a boat at Malakeke Town should be able to take them to Lila Island where their next set of trials await them.

Lila Island Trials

Caoni's Trial

Caoni can be found in his house near his Honey Farm. Upon entering the house the player will see Caoni talking to some of the townsfolk, he notices the player enter and greets the player asking if they're also inquiring about the job to work on the Honey Farm. After the player explains that they're an Island Challenger Caoni staggers and then apologizes to the townsfolk stating that he'll have to discuss the job at a later date. The townsfolk thank Caoni and head out.

Caoni then walks over to the player and informs the player that he's been waiting for one of the island challengers to show up. Caoni informs the player that his trial will be set in the forests of Route 25-South and that he'll be waiting for the player to arrive. Caoni heads out and the player follows after him soon reaching the entrance to the forested section of Route 25-South. Caoni greets the player and explains that he simply adores Bug-Type Pokemon and has been collecting them for as long as he can remember. Caoni asks the player what they think of Bug-Type Pokemon to which the player can respond in several ways garnering different responses from Caoni. Caoni then explains that with his trial the player's goal will be to attract Bug Pokemon to a totem pole situated in the middle of the forest.

Caoni states that different Bug-Type Pokemon are attracted to different things and the player will have to observe the Bug-Type Pokemon to find out what they're attracted to and collect it. The player then heads into the forest and begins observing the numerous Bug Pokemon that inhabit the area either by sneaking, looking around through special clearings in the forest or simply being observant. The player will realize soon enough that there are five Bug-Type Pokemon that have overworld models in the forest and that each of them are attracted to different things;

  • Larvesta - Golden Leaves
  • Parasect - Rawst Berries
  • Dewpider - Spring Water
  • Galvantula - Glowing Mushrooms
  • Venonat - Tree Sap

The player will witness the Pokemon having an interest in these items and be able to find said items somewhere else in the forest (except in the case of Parasect where the player must sneak up on them and swipe the Rawst Berries when they're not looking). Once the player returns all the items to the totem Pole and lays them out in front of it Caoni approaches the player and tells them that the next thing they'll need to do is put the items into the correct slots of the Totem Pole based on the Pokemon that was attracted to that scent. The totem pole has five open mouths where the player can place each item, and each totem is shaped like the Pokemon the player saw. Once the player has completed this task the Pokemon the player saw begin flocking around the totem pole.

Caoni marvels at all the Bug-Type Pokemon and asks the player what they think of Bug-Type Pokemon now, the player can again respond with several answers prompting different repsonses from Caoni. Just then a rustling from a nearby shrub will be heard causing the Bug Pokemon to quickly scurry away. Caoni begins to back off stating that he'd forgotten about the Forest's Guardian and tells the player to watch out as the Pokemon attacks.

He wishes the player the best of luck with their remaining trials and tells Araquanid that they're going back to the Honey Farm to get Araquanid some honey as a reward, Araquanid seemingly elated by this gets up and carries Caoni out of the forest.

The man responds stating that his name is Wally and that he'd come to stay in the Alola Region for a long time due to the cleaner air conditions and a chance to train up his Pokemon even further.
