The Neon Evolution is one of the new features introduced in Pokémon Progress and Regress and is a cross of a regular Evolution and Mega Evolution; unlike Mega Evolution, the Neon Pokémon can hold a held item since it Neon Evolve from an item called the Neon Gem (Progression Quatz in Japanese) although have ranged between 50 for stronger one to beyond 100 for weaker one in order to balance the pre-Neon Pokémon, including those who had mediocre Mega Evolution such as Audino.

It revert to its normal form if used again. Neon Pokémon also had different name unlike Mega Pokémon who were simply called like Mega Swampert, for instance. A Pokémon that have both a Mega Evolution and a Neon Evolution can do the former one after doing the latter one; as such a Neon Pokémon can be called by fans a "Mega-Neon Pokémon".

The Pokémon selection is more emphased toward balance than popularity, as it emphasis Pokémon, weak or strong, that are easily overshadowed by more popular Pokémon in competitive scenes. Goodra and Hydreigon are no exceptions, despite the two being Pseudo-Legendary, are still overshadowed by even non-Pseudo-Legendary Pokémon presumely does to the former one's abysmal Stat distribution and the latter ones' problems with its typing.

The Neon Evolution allows player to try out and revert it back if he/she don't like it. Like Pokémon who got Mega Evolution, Pokémon with Neon Evolution do not receive the Eviolite's effects, as it might cause more balance issues. Like Mega Evolutions, it might also change some of the Abilities, but some Pokémon kept the same Abilities the same way it is.

The condition to make a Pokémon to Neon Evolve is to give it high affection in Pokémon-Amie (around 35% Affection), as lower than that would cause it to Neon Evolve but also to make it aggressive, only thinking of itself and will not take the trainer's order.

So far, there will be more Neon Evolutions debuted than the 25 first Mega Evolutions, but it is also revealed that more Neon Evolutions might comes via updates after Progress and Regress are released.

According to sources, such as in an interview with Samtendo09, it is said that Neon Evolution is what Mega Evolution should be; genuine Evolution that allow Pokémon, weak or strong, to get stronger, and is done in a more safer way, such as avoiding absurb stat distribution or an insanely high base stat.

Unlike Mega Evolution, Neon Evolution will only replace the Pokémon's current Ability by the new Ability but not the other Abilities, which means that if Gumshoos becomes Prosecgoos and had the Ability Strong Jaw, then that Ability will be replaced by Moxie, but the other Ability, Stakeout and the Hidden Ability, Adaptability, are still available via Ability Capsule and Hidden Capsule, respectively.

    Trivia

    • Imperdactyl and Medicute are the only Pokémon who are capable of Mega Evolution. This is because their counterpart prior to Neon Evolution, Aerodactyl and Audino, are also capable to do Mega Evolution, while the rest of compatible Pokémon cannot.
    • If Mega Evolution does not count, then Teneydra, Gooenax, Uniwryrm and Zaportress have the highest BST among the Neon Evolution with 650 BST each.
      • If Mega Evolution does count, then Mega Imperdactyl have the highest BST so far, with 665 BST, following by Mega Medicute with 655 BST.
    • Not surprisingly, Supachu have the most regional forms with three (Kanto/Classic, Alola and Ironeo) so far. This is because Raichu, the Pokémon prior to this Neon Evolution, have also three of those forms. Take notice that it is not exclusive to this Pokémon as some other Pokémon such as Avalugg also have a regional form.
    • Possibly because the Neon Gem is the only way to trigger a Neon Evolution, it is not possible for a Pokémon to have two or more different Neon Evolutions.
      • Samtendo09 actually said that because giving a Pokémon two Neon Evolutions would potentially caused distractors to scream favoritism and also not safe for balance, as Charizard and Mewtwo, the only two who got two different Mega Evolutions so far, had been noted for being in favor of nostalgia or popularity than logical reasons.
    • There was an intended male design for male Gourgeant, but the design itself wasn't appealing and stuck in practice, so it was abandoned in favor of sharing the female design.
