Paper Mario is one of the sub-series' of the Mario series. The series currently has four installments: Paper Mario, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Super Paper Mario, Paper Mario: Sticker Star, and Paper Mario Color Splash. The games are generally RPGs, however, Super Paper Mario is a platformer instead of an RPG.
The series follows a paper version of Mario as he usually explores the world collecting seven different objects for one specific object. However, the later games in the series are different, sometimes only collecting six of a specific object and sometimes collecting eight.
The first Paper Mario game was prior planned to be known as Super Mario RPG 2, thus a sequel to the Mario RPG game on the SNES, but was later programmed into a different Mario game but still an RPG.

Paper Mario
In the beginning of Mario's travels in Paper Mario, he attempts to rescuing Peach after Bowser lifts her castle high up into the sky with her trapped in it. Mario tries to defeat Bowser in the beginning but fails; Bowser knocks Mario out the window and he falls; later on he finds that he must rescue all 7 Star Spirits in order to reach Bowser's Castle way up in space to go rescue Peach and defeat Bowser.
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
On Peach's adventure to a city called Rogueport, she hears of a hidden place called The Thousand-Year-Door and tasks Mario with finding it and opening up the door by collecting the seven Crystal Stars spread across the land. Peach is also kidnapped in this game but it is unknown who did and where she is until you venture through the game further.
Super Paper Mario
When Peach is kidnapped (again), Mario heads straight to Bowser's Castle thinking that Bowser kidnapped her, but instead it was Count Bleck, who suddenly appears and sucks everyone, except Mario, into a black hole. In order to save his friends and Bowser, Mario needs to find the eight Pure Hearts scattered across the 2D land.
Paper Mario: Sticker Star
On the night of the Sticker Fest, the Sticker Comet flies by and is rumoured to make everyones wishes come true. As the comet makes it to the ground, Bowser and his army appear to take the comet for their own. Accidentally breaking the comet into six pieces, with one landing on Bowser's head. Mario searches the land for the five Royal Stickers until he finally faces Bowser for the final piece of the Sticker Comet.
Paper Mario: Color Splash
Peach and Toad recieve a letter from Port Prisma. Upon opening the letter, it is revealed to Mario and the player that this letter was a colorless Toad. After sailing to Port Prisma, it is shown that the area is practically abandoned, along with various blank spots across the port. A black paint coated Bowser has been sucking life out of the island with the help of his army. Mario, with the help of a paint can named Huey, find the Big Paint Stars, restore color to the island, and defeat Bowser.
