Paper Mario & Luigi is a fictional game that would be designed for the Nintendo 3DS. Taking place within the Paper Mario universe, it aims to combine elements of both the Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi RPG series into a single adventure.

Overview

It's the day of the annual Mushroom Kingdom Gala, and Mario and Luigi are the guests of honor. The day promises to be filled with interesting guests, good food, dancing and fun. But even before the Mario Brothers arrive at the event, the vile King Bowser kidnaps the fair Princess Peach. As per usual, Mario and Luigi battle their way to Bowser's castle.

Just as the brothers corner Bowser, something unusual happens... The entire Mushroom Kingdom is rocked by a tremendous earthquake, creating huge fissures across the land. Two unknown figures appear from nowhere and abscond with the Princess, spiriting her away to parts unknown. Finally, Mario and Luigi fall into a mysterious portal and end up in a place that feels... familiar, somehow, but definitely menacing.

Can Mario and Luigi find out what's going on, save the princess, and return home? With your help, they'll have a fighting chance!

Navigating the Overworld

The first step in successfully aiding Mario and Luigi on their quest is to understand how to navigate them through the Mushroom Kingdom and its shadowy double, the Rose Kingdom.

Moving Around

Mario, Luigi, and their allies usually travel together as a group. Make them walk around with the Analog Stick. When together, Mario always leads the party, Luigi sticks in the middle, and the active partner bring up the rear.

Mario Folds into Roles!

Mario's actions in the overworld are always triggered with the A Button.

Jump - Mario's default overworld action is to jump. Jumping in tandem with Luigi is the way to traverse most of the terrain you'll encounter. You can also hit floating blocks from underneath by jumping. That causes all sorts of interesting things to happen!

Talk - You can talk to various characters when you see a speech icon above their heads. Talking with people is a good way find out what to do next and other valuable information.

Read - When you see a speech icon over a sign, Mario can read what is written on it.

Interact - There are various things Mario can interact with in the overworld. When you see an exclamation icon above Mario's head, Mario can toy around with them. Who knows what will happen?

Transform - Mario can fold himself into various shapes to move about. These folding techniques are taught by the elusive Folgami Family. When Mario is transformed, he takes Luigi and their partners wherever he goes.

  • Flip Fold - When next to a narrow vertical opening, Mario can flip sideways to fit through it and travel to any exit on the other side.
  • Sticker Fold - This gives Mario the ability to stick to walls and walk on any narrow ledges that protude from them. To activate this power, find a Sticker Panel against a wall and press Mario's action button. While traveling against a wall, Mario can jump by pressing the A Button. To peel yourself off of walls, you'll need to find a Sticker Panel and press the A Button yet again.
  • Plane Fold - Mario can activate this power by standing on a Plane Panel and pressing his action button. Mario transforms in a paper plane that can glide for long distances. Tilt the Analog Stick in the opposite direction that you're gliding to slow your speed and descent.
  • Boat Fold - When Mario finds a Boat Panel, he can fold into a paper boat and navigate on water. Use the Analog Stick to chart your course and avoid hazards. To return to normal, simply find a Boat Panel and press the A Button.

Toggleable Abilities - In addition to jumping, Mario can perform these actions anywhere! Just press the Right Trigger to shift through them and then press the A Button!

  • Hammer - Mario puts the hammer down! With this move, Mario can destroy large blocks, although concrete and metal blocks may require a more powerful hammer to break...
  • Super Bros. Wheel - This secret technique is taught by the elder Papa and Nana Folgami. Mario and Luigi fold up into a wheel to get around very quickly! You can even press the A Button again to jump while rolling! To get back to a regular pace, just press the B Button. You can't activate the Super Bros. Wheel if Mario and Luigi are seperated.

Luigi Jumps to It!

Luigi's actions in the overworld are always triggered by the B Button.

Jump - Like Mario, Luigi is a mighty jumper! Jumping in coordination with Mario is necessary if you want to get anywhere in the overworld. The partners following Luigi automatically jump, so you don't need to worry about them!

Talk / Read / Interact - When seperated from Mario, Luigi can talk to people, read signs, and interact with objects in the overworld.

Super Jumps - Luigi is particularly talented at jumping. When he obtains the right footware, the world-famous Jump Pros. will want to teach him their Super Jump techniques. To toggle between Luigi's different jumps, press the Left Trigger. Just be aware that Luigi can't perform Super Jumps without Mario around!

  • Spring Jump - Luigi springs off of Mario's head. With this, Luigi and the gang can surmount ledges higher than they normally could!
  • Spin Jump - Luigi perches on top of Mario's head. Pressing the B Button again causes them to spin so fast that they temporarily lift off the ground! While spinning, steer the two brothers using the Analog Stick. Using this, the team can cross most small gaps with no problem! To position yourself before spinning, use the Analog Stick. If you want to dismount without spinning, press the A Button.

Hammer - When seperated from Mario, Luigi can toggle between jumping and swinging his hammer by pressing the Left Trigger. Luigi can demolish any block that Mario can.

A Little Help from your Friends

Throughout their adventure, Mario and Luigi will find several partners eager to assist them on their quest. In addition to helping out in battle, these partners have several amazing abilities that make traveling in the overworld easier! These abilities are triggered with the Y Button.

To quickly shift between partners, use the left and right buttons on the Directional Pad.

A Little Knowledge is a Wonderful Thing!

Early in your adventure, the Star Kids Twink and Stella will join the team. The two are very knowlegeable about the Mushroom and Rose Kingdoms, its peoples, and all sorts of other interesting things!

Twink or Stella will dispense some of their knowledge about an area when the X Button is pressed. If you want to know a bit more about a particular person or select objects, go up to them and press the X Button.

A Tale of Two Kingdoms...

After the massive earthquake that shakes the Mushroom Kingdom, strange portals will begin to appear all around the overworld. These Portals are pathways between the Mushroom and Rose kingdoms, parallel worlds that exist in seperate dimensions. Simply jumping into a Portal is all it takes to travel between the two kingdoms.

The Mushroom and Rose kingdoms share similar, although not exact, terrian. If you find it impossible to proceed in one kingdom, perhaps the solution is to travel to the other kingdom and see if the area is any different.

The Mushroom and Rose kingdoms also possess great contrasts, especially in regards to their inhabitants. Just remember that allies and foes in one world may have their roles switched in the other!

Working Together by Splitting Apart

Sometimes, events will happen that cause Mario and Luigi to be seperated from each other. Don't worry, they'll have everything they need get to where they've got to go! When this happens, you can press the down button on the Directional Pad to switch from controlling Mario and his partners to Luigi and his cohorts and vice versa. Mario and Luigi will be given the chance to reunite as one team when the two groups find each other.

After unsticking former lovebirds Toadeo and Koopiet from one another, the two will teach Mario and Luigi how to split up their group on command. Press the down button on the Directional Pad and you'll be asked to allocate partners between Mario and Luigi. Once you're satisfied with your selection, press the A Button and the two groups will take off. If you decide that you don't want to split up the party after all, press the B Button. When split into two teams, you'll be able to switch from controlling one group to the other by pressing down on the Directional Pad. When you're ready to reform into a single party, just reunite the two groups.

While split up, Mario and Luigi's groups are able to travel far apart from each other, even between the Mushroom and Rose Kingdoms! Doing so is sometimes necessary to properly manipulate Anomalies. Anomalies, distinguishable by their unique auras, are objects existing in both the Mushroom and Rose Kingdoms. Any change made to an Anomaly in one kindgom will be made to it in the other kingdom! If you use Anomalies wisely, there's almost nowhere Mario and Luigi's teams can't get to!

If you become stuck while seperated, press up on the Directional Pad and Mario and Luigi will reunite at the point they split up. Getting stuck might happen if Mario or Luigi don't have the right partners with them, so look for telltale clues in the overworld indicating the ideal arrangements.

Battling Enemies

What's an adventure without a few scraps along the way? Throughout their journey, Mario and Luigi will have to fight a variety of belligerent foes, from simple Goombas to towering monstrosities. But don't give up! Winning fights will make your team stronger and better able to confront whatever comes next!

If both Mario and Luigi loss all HP in battle (or one of the brothers loses all HP when the group is separated), it'll be GAME OVER for you, and you'll have to restart at the last point that you saved the game!

Entering into Battle

To enter into battle, simply touch an enemy in the overworld. You'll be whisked away to a battle screen, where a few more enemies will usually join the fight and the battle will begin.

Strike First with First Strikes!

...But there is a way to deal damage to a foe even before a battle begins! By jumping on an enemy in the overworld, hitting it with your hammer, using a partner ability, or otherwise striking at it first, Mario and Luigi's team will immediately deal damage to a single foe before the battle's first turn! Dealing First Strikes is a great way to get a leg up in battle!

But beware, because enemies have the ability to inflict a First Strike on you! If an enemy manages to strike you in the overworld, the character that was struck will be subject to a volley of hard-to-counter attacks as the battle begins! You don't want this to happen, so be sure to watch how enemies move in the overworld before attempting a First Strike yourself.

Also be aware that even if you land a First Strike, it may not be effective against certain enemies. Enemies with spikes or flames will hurt whoever jumps on them, First Strike or no, without certain protections.

Battle Rotation

In almost all battles, Mario takes the first turn, followed by Luigi, your team's partner, and then the enemies on the opposing side. If either Mario, Luigi, or your partner have no HP, then they will not act during battle.

To select Mario's options in battle, use the A Button. Luigi and your partner character use the B Button and Y Button, respectively.

Mario and Luigi have very similar options in battle.

  • Jump - Mario or Luigi are able to attack enemies by jumping on them. A basic jumping attack is always available that costs no FP to use, but as you acquire better equipment and badges, more effective attacks that do consume FP become available. Be sure not to jump on spiked or flaming enemies without proper precautions, or you'll risk taking damage yourself!
  •  Hammer - Mario or Luigi swings their hammer at foes. There is a basic hammer attack that costs no FP to use, but there are additional hammer attacks that require certain equipment or badges and do consume FP. Try using these attacks on enemies with bodily hazards or strong defenses!
  • Bros. Attacks - Throughout the game, Mario and Luigi can find equipment that will allow them to unleash powerful Bros. Attacks! Bros. Attacks require FP to use, as well as correctly executed button commands in order to maximize their effectiveness. If Mario or Luigi is incapacitated, Bros. Attacks cannot be performed.
  • Star Powers - As the game progresses, Mario and Luigi will be able to use a variety of Star Powers, powerful healing, defensive and offensive techniques that Twink and Stella wield. Different Star Powers require varying amounts of Star Points (SP) to use, which can be replenished by performing well in battle and using Stylish moves. Unlike FP, Mario and Luigi pool their total amount of SP together. The maximum amount of SP the two can possess increases over the course of the game.
    • Snap Shot - Requires 0 SP. Twink and Stella's first Star Power. Twink or Stella will identify selected enemies and tell Mario and Luigi about their stats, strengths and weaknesses. Using Snap Shot on an enemy also displays its health in all future battles and adds its entry to the Beastilary.
    • Enchantment Song - Requires 3 SP. The player selects an item from their inventory. If the following series of button inputs is correctly pressed, the item has a chance of becoming an Enchanted item, which doubles that item's effect. The more powerful an item already is, the higher the chance that the enchantment will fail.
  • Items - Mario and Luigi can use a wide variety of items in battle, which can restore health, cure status effects, or even detrimentally affect enemies. All three active party members have access to the shared pool of items. At first, the group can also only carry 20 items, but finding the extremely rare Expand-A-Bag items can increase this capacity by 5.
  • Tactics - A variety of other techniques are available for Mario and Luigi to use in battle.
    • Appeal - Mario or Luigi appeals to their Audience, causing them to restore an especially large number of Star Points. If used multiple times in the same battle, its effectiveness dramatically decreases.
    • Switch Partners - Allows you to pick another partner to use during battle.
    • Change Badges - Allows Mario or Luigi to equip or unequip badges in battle, so long as they have the required BP. If selected, the player can either unequip up to two badges, unequip a badge and equip another one, or equip up to two badges.
    • Defend - Boosts Mario or Luigi's defense the next time that enemies attack, at the expense of not being able to dodge or counter during that time.
    • Do Nothing - Mario or Luigi do nothing during their turn.
    • Run Away - If a battle becomes overwhelming, it may be best to throw in the towel. If selected, the player will have to mash the prompted buttons repeatedly to increase the team's chances of successfully fleeing. Running away causes the team to forfeit any items already gained in battle and some coins, and always has a chance of failure.
    • With the right badges equiped, other tactics may be available for Mario and Luigi to use.

Partners have their own unique options in battle.

  • Attack - Partners have their own attacks in battle, which have all sorts of crazy effects! Two attacks are available to each partner once they join your party, one of which never uses FP. Different partner attacks tend to do better against certain types of enemies. Experiment to see what each attack is capable of!
  • Trio Attack - Trio Attacks are some of the most powerful attacks in the game. Although they require large amounts of FP, have complex button inputs to pull off right, and won't work if anyone on the battle screen is incapacitated, they can deal tremendous damage and may have other beneficial effects. Each partner has their own unique Trio Attack that they perform with Mario and Luigi, which have different effects. If you can, try and see what each Trio Attack is capable of!
  • Items - Partners are also capable of using items in battle.
  • Tactics - Partners have access to tactical options as well.
    • Appeal - Partners appeal to the Audience to restore a large amount of SP.
    • Switch Partners - Allows you to switch out the partner participating in battle.
    • Defend - Partners hunker down, raising their defense during the next enemy attack, but being unable to dodge or counter the onslaught.
    • Do Nothing - The partner idles during their turn.
    • Run Away - The team attempts to run away from battle, at the cost of forfeiting items already gained during the fight and some coins.
    • If Mario and Luigi equip the right badges, other tactics may be available for partners to use.

A Word About Action Commands

Action Commands are button inputs that have the capacity to make your attacks even stronger! When attacking, pay attention to the button prompts on screen. Pressing the right button at the right time will either extend your attacks or make them more powerful. Each attack usually has a specific set of Action Commands, so if you keep practicing they'll become second nature in no time.

Jump attacks, Hammer attacks, Bros. Attacks, Trio Attacks, and Star Powers all use Action Commands.

When Enemies Attack!

When the enemy team strikes, you'll almost always have the chance to dodge or counter their attacks. You can not only complete negate enemy attacks this way, but potentially even hurt enemies in the process!

Similar to when attacking, Mario always uses the A Button, Luigi always uses the B Button, and the active partner always uses the Y Button when countering attacks.

  • Tells - Mario, Luigi, and the active partner can all dodge / counter at any time during enemy attacks, but doing so with the wrong character can backfire on you! So how can you predict who an enemy will attack? Nearly all enemies have a range of quirky behaviors they engage in before attacking your group. If you pay close attention, a specific behavior will always tell you which of your party members the enemy will attack. As always, a little practice is all it takes to master this aspect of battle!
  • Jump Dodging - Sometimes, you will be prompted to jump out of the way of enemy attacks. If an enemy directly charges at you, you might even be able to jump on it and inflict damage! But remember that some enemies will damage you if you land on them!
  • Action Countering - At other times, you'll be prompted to knock back enemies or their attacks. Mario and Luigi do this with their hammers, while the partners do it using other means. Hold down each character's respective action button to prepare the counter. When the time to strike is right, release the action button and watch the sparks fly!
  • If either Mario, Luigi, or a partner runs out of HP, Mario or Luigi will try to assist that character in avoiding further attacks. This makes dodges and counters much more cumbersome, so it's in your best interests to try and keep your party members from running out of HP.
  • Extended Countering - Some powerful enemies and bosses will charge at the party, attempting to run them down. These attacks are harder to avoid and devestating if they hit, but also offer more chances to counter the enemy! When these attacks occur, Twink and Stella will fold the partner character into something that can be used to help Mario and Luigi.
    • Plane Fold - The partner character is folded into a paper airplane, while Mario and Luigi can jump while fleeing from the enemy. The player can steer the paper airplane over Mario or Luigi using the Analog Stick, allowing them to grab onto it by holding their action button and extending the amount of time they can dodge ground-based attacks. But air-based attacks can strike the paper airplane itself, inflicting damage on the partner character and momentarily stunning them in the air.
    • Boomerang Fold - Mario and Luigi alternate throwing a partner-turned-boomerang at the target persuing them. Aim with the reticle and use the appropriate action button to let the boomerang fly. Make sure to aim true, though, because if the boomerang misses its target, it takes much longer to return to the other brother.
    • Trampoline Fold - The partner folds into a trampoline, with which Mario and Luigi have to keep one or more hazardous objects from reaching the ground. Simply move under a falling object with the Analog Stick to catch it and launch it back into the air. For some additional height, press the Y Button just as the object touches the trampoline.

What's Your Status?

Status effects are special conditions that can either enhance or impair a character's performance in battle. Beneficial status effects are generally provided via an item or a partner technique, while negative status effects are sometimes inflicted upon you by enemy attacks. Status effects only last for a limited time in battle, and are completely negated once the battle ends. You can oftentimes end negative status effects early with the right item.

Beneficial Status Effects

  • 'Power Boost - Doubles the character's damage output for a short while. The Dynamic Drumstick' bestows this effect for 3 turns.
  • Defense Boost - Doubles the character's defense against attacks for a short while. Damage is rounded down to the nearest whole number. Blocky Cheese grants you this effect for 3 turns.
  • Fast - Allows the character to take two actions during their turn in battle. The Fleeting Fish item gives you another action during the turn you take it and the Fast status effect during that character's next turn, or gives a character the Fast status effect for their next two turns if delivered by another character.
  • HP Regen - Regenerates a character's HP by a certain amount each turn. The Slow Shroom restores 2 HP each turn for 10 turns, while the Superslow Shroom restores 5 HP each turn for 10 turns.
  • FP Regen - Regenerates a character's FP by a certain amount each turn.
  • Dodgey - Makes it possible for enemy attacks that connect with you to miss. You'll still want to try to dodge them, at least. The Wavy Apple item will make you Dodgey for 3 turns.
  • 'Electrified - Charges your character with electricity, causing them to be dangerous to touch! All enemies that directly attack will be damaged upon contact with an Electrified character, and sufficiently small enemies will be repelled altogether. The Volt Carrot' will electrify your character for 3 turns.
  • Golden Touch - Causes enemies to burst into a shower of gold coins once defeated. The rare Bedazzled Cookie item delivers this status effect unto you for 3 turns.
  • Super-Charged - Doubles your character's attacks and makes them completely invincible, while also damaging enemies that make direct contact with you. Only granted with the Starshard Parfait, an incredibly hard-to-make item that grants this status effect for 3 turns.

Harmful Status Effects

Pausing the Game

Trekking between two worlds, battling enemies, and saving the world can sometimes get a little overwhelming. If you want to take a break from your adventure, press the Start Button in the overworld. Doing so will stop the action and bring up a helpful menu.

The player takes control of Mario, Luigi, and their collection of partner characters as they traverse the Mushroom Kingdom and the parallel Rose Kingdom. In the overworld, the group must traverse terrain, explore nooks and crannies, solve puzzles, and confront or avoid enemies. The game borrows heavily from the first two titles in the Paper Mario series, featuring partners, transformations, upgradable equipment, seven plot-relevant items to collect, and more. However, there are also several important influences from the Mario & Luigi series, namely that defending against enemy attacks in battle is dynamic and can result in completely avoiding attacks or even counterattacking foes.

Another important element of the game are its two interconnected overworlds, the Mushroom Kingdom and the Rose Kingdom, which resides in a previously-inaccessible parallel universe. Mario's group travel between these overworlds via portals scattered across multiple locations. Being reflections of each other, the Mushroom and Rose kingdoms share similar terrain and features, including Anomalies, objects whose interactions with in one world affect their positions or states in the other world. Puzzle elements in the game often require that Mario and Luigi split the party into two and separately navigate both overworlds, using Anomalies in order the aid the progress of the other brother and his partners. Although Mario and Luigi are forcibly separated at a few points during the game's story, they eventually gain the ability to split the party at will and allocate different partners between themselves.

The differences between the Mushroom and Rose kingdoms are often those of great contrasts. What may be a tropical tourist trap in the Mushroom Kingdom is a polluted and dismal swamp in the Rose Kingdom. This also applies to the kingdoms' residents. While Princess Peach is a benevolent and graceful monarch in the Mushroom Kingdom, her doppelganger in the Rose Kingdom, Princess Thorn, is a power-hungry and ruthless warmonger who seeks to conquer both kingdoms. Likewise, the Rose Kingdom's King Rocco is honorable and kindly as opposed to the temperamental and brutish King Bowser. Other such pairs of characters act as foils for one another.

Characters

Over the course of the game, the player will control and encounter a colorful cast of characters.

Main Characters

Mario is the loveable and heroic plumber known the world over for his impressive jump and feats of courage. His adventure kicks off when both Princess Peach and Luigi are kidnapped and spirited away to Bowser's castle, prompting him to go rescue them both. In the overworlds, Mario's special abilities revolve around hammering obstacles and various transformations. Luigi is Mario's kid brother and not always the adventuring sort. That said, he always tries his best no matter what situation he finds himself in. Finding that both he and his brother are trapped in a strange new world, Luigi resolves to do everything he can to help his brother find Princess Peach and then a way back home. In the overworlds, Luigi's special abilities revolve around advanced jumping techniques used to clear gaps and reach high ledges. Partners

Over the course of their adventures, Mario and Luigi encounter numerous new friends eager to join their party for any number of reasons. Partners expand the various ways that the party can traverse or better understand the overworld. In battle, partners have their own unique techniques that help to win the day.

Twink is a Star Kid and a very old friend of Princes Peach. Now older and a student at Stellar U, Twink is eager to apply what he's learned when he hears that Princess Peach has been kidnapped. Twink knows a lot of things, and can tell you all about different places, allies, and foes. Although Twink doesn't fight, he does have access to a large variety of Star Powers with which to aid the team. Sue Z. is a young, plucky Toad, and Chomps is her friendly but rowdy pet Chain Chomp. Both are from the small burg of Evergreen Town. Sue Z. decides to take Chomps and join Mario and Luigi after they successfully rescue Chomps from several mysterious baddies. Sue Z. can command Chomps to latch onto items, switches, and latches from afar, even over gaps! Mr. Misterio is a Ninji magician that has performed the same act in Golden Port for over 30 years. Just as he finally decided to call it quits, his lovely assistant Enigmina goes missing! Fortunately Mario and Luigi are on the case and assist Mr. Misterio in his search. Mr. Misterio can turn Mario and Luigi invisible for roughly five seconds, allowing them to sneak past guards and traps in the meantime. Blooprill is a science-obsessed Blooper wearing a drill mechanism on his head. Tasked with evaluating the vegetation of Deepwood Forest, Blooprill is finding that his assignment is harder than expected thanks to the sudden presence of pollution and monsters in the woods. Blooprill's specialty is digging under soft patches of ground. He can dig up buried treasure or even dig up walls! Prince Wallop is a princely Walleye, and the last descendant of the ancient Walleyptian civilization. Mario and Luigi awaken him when they accidently stumble into his tomb, and he decides that it could be fun to travel the modern world for a while. Prince Wallop can interact with Walleyptian ruins to activate all sorts of effects. Additionally, Prince Wallop's flying fists are strong enough to tear down cracked walls or objects. He's utterly unconcerned with the strange pollutants ravaging the woods, considering it just another variable to take account of, but joins Mario's group in order to protect him from the monsters plaguing the woods and allowing him to continue his studies. Unlike most of Mario and Luigi's other partners, Twink cannot be switched out once he joins the party and will permanently follow Mario and Luigi in the overwold. If the player presses the X button in the overworld, Twink will give some general info about the area that Mario and Luigi are currently in, as well as offering to give the player clues concerning the current objective or about nearby puzzles. Likewise, pressing X around NPCs or select objects will cause Twink to briefly talk about that person or object. In battle, Twink doesn't fight directly but assists the team by giving it access to Star Power, a variety of techniques that serve to provide support to the rest of the party via healing or boosting stats. Either Mario or Luigi can choose to exploit Star Power, which will use up their current turn. Each time Twink is exposed to the ambient energy of a Vortex Shard, his range of Star Powers increase and the Star Power Gauge increases its maximum capacity by one unit. In the field, Sue Z. can swing Chomps's leash to launch Chomps across gaps. This serves several purposes. Chomps can retrieve objects or hit switches outside of Mario or Luigi's grasp. Chomps is also able to bite down on special latches, allowing Sue Z. to pull retractable platforms out from walls. Finally, if the partner action button is held down, Sue Z. can angle the direction in which Chomps is launched. Chomps can then bite down onto latches located on ceilings, allowing the rest of the group to swing across large gaps using Chomps's leash. In the field, Mr. Mysterio has the power to turn the rest of the group incoporal for five second intervals. This allows the group to sneak past guards and security systems unnoticed, as well as remain unharmed by spikes, crushers, fire jets, and other overworld hazards. The group can also completely phase through thin wire mesh barriers while incorporal. Unlike Lady Bow or Viven's similar abilities, the group has the full ability to move about while incoporal, at the cost of having a five-second cool-down period before the group can turn incoporal again. In the field, Rodrill can drill into any soft soil or snow and takes the rest of the party with him when he does so. This allows him to dig up Beans and other buried treasures, travel beneath narrow openings and low clearances, and to scale up dirt or snow patches in walls. Pressing the partner action button again will cause Rodrill and the rest of the party to return to the surface. In the field, Prince Wallop has the ability to interact with ancient Walleyeptian panels scattered throughout the Mushroom and Rose kingdoms, which often radically alter the immediate environment in some way. In addition, he has a powerful three-punch combo that he does whenever the partner action button is pressed without any unactivated Walleyptian panels in the immediate area. This punch can clear potential enemies from the overworld, in addition to breaking down any cracked walls or other objects that the punches make contact with. Blitz is a solitary Bumpty who has been conducting a one-man guerilla war against Princess Thorn's forces after they begin constructing an airship refueling station at Hielo Peak. He initially mistrusts Mario and Luigi, mistaking them for the antagonistic Mateo Bros. Blitz manages to trap the protagonists, but is soon himself captured by the actual Mateo Bros. Mario's group manages to rescue him and add him to their roster. In the field, Blitz has the ability to generate a spontaneous blizzard. This has the effect of slowing down the fast-moving machinery covering Hielo Peak, allowing Mario's group to safely traverse it. Elsewhere, this blizzard ability can power wind turbines, extingush flames, and freeze bodies of water and lava, allowing Mario and company to walk and jump on them. While bodies of water remain frozen until the party moves to another section of the overworld, bodies of lava will return to their naturally hazardous state after a short period of time. Lucia is an outspoken and charasmatic Lava Bubble. While the Lava Bubbles of Mount Fuego are enslaved by the ruthless Raster Typhonus and forced to cause havok throughout the Mushroom Kingdom, Lucia leads a small resistance inside of Cinder Village. She "recruits" Mario's group and tasks them with gathering 99 Lava Bubbles with which to confront Typhonus. She permanently joins Mario's group afterwards with the intention to track down the remaining wayward Lava Bubbles outside of Mount Fuego. In the field, Lucia has the passive ability whenever she is active to illuminate dark areas. In addition, when the partner action button is pressed, she temporary bursts into a larger flame. This allows Lucia to light torches, melt ice, burn away thorns and other obstructing vegetation, and to light the fuses for explosives. Aine is an unknown fairy-like creature that is found imprisoned in Dr. M. Madd's personal quarters. Aine remembers nothing about her past except for her name. It's later revealed that Aine was created as the first magically-created lifeform by a young Merlon, designed to assist in his laboratory. Nolrem stole her away and studied her for many years to create the first Rasters for Princess Thorn, destructive monsters in her service. While generally timid, Aine has incredibly powerful magical abilities. In the field, Lucia can allow Mario and Luigi to "enter" into the surfaces of walls, allowing them to interact with any markings, graffiti, or any other artwork as if they are actual platforms and objects. This is essentially an upgrade to Mario's Sticker Ability, which allows him to stick to walls but not to interact with any markings on them. She also has the ability to make Glitterbloom seeds sprout, which quickly develop into a variety of colorful platforms. Mayzee Dayzee is a Crazee Dayzee who believes that she is the greatest singer who's ever lived. While her singing merely makes people fall asleep like all songs coming from Crazee Dayzees, she rationalizes this by saying that her fans are always excited by her presence to the point of exhaustion. If Mario and company find her in an isolated part of Deepwood Forest, she'll offer to put on a concert for the group. Accepting this offer initiates a difficult battle against her. If the group beats her, Mayzee will say that she's never had such a dedicated group of fans before ("You were, like, all over me and everything!"), and offers to go "on tour" with the group for the "small up-front fee" of 500 coins. Accept once again and Mayzee joins the party. Mayzee Dayzee is an optional party member. Mayzee can sing, causing all nearby enemies in the overworld to fall asleep, making avoiding fights and first-strikes much easier. This applies to several large Thwomps as well, which usually guard rarer items and can't be jumped over unless they tip over after falling asleep. Mayzee also has the passive ability to sense undiscovered treasures. As the group approaches such potential finds, the expression on Mayzee's face grows more and more ecstatic. Merlee is a Shaman residing in the sewers beneath Toad Town, where she resides in isolation with her 21 Blitties. Although she specializes in blessings, she's initially too distraught to perform any but the sloppiest of rituals thanks to her pets scattering across the Mushroom and Rose kingdoms following the seismic activity near the beginning of the story. As Mario's team recovers her Blitties, she calms down and offers better blessings. After recovering all 21 Blitties, Merlee will bestow Mario's team with a Premium Blessing for perpetuity. Merlee doesn't join Mario's traveling group. She does, however, aid him in battle by generating several positive effects in battle at random times: Temporarily boosting the team's attack or defense by 3 points, doubling the Star Points or Coins gained after battle, restoring either 10 Heart Points or Flower Points to all protagonists in battle, or completely restoring the team's Star Power Gauge. These are supplied via Blessings, which Merlee charges money for. The Basic, Super, and Ultra Blessings sequentially last longer and result in blessings slightly more frequently, but become more expensive. After finding all of Merlee's Blitties, she bestows a Premium Blessing on the group for free. The Premium Blessing is identical to the Ultra Blessing, except that it is permanent and guatantees a temporary attack or defense boost at the start of all boss battles. Wiggler is a temporary party member that joins Mario's group in Deepwood Forest. Initially, he stalks and sets traps for Rodrill, mistakenly blaming him for the poisonous goop that has flooded the forest's lower levels. One he sees the real source of the toxic liquid in the Rose Kingdom, he resolves to make up for the inconvenience he's caused Rodrill and Mario's team. He decides to stay behind in Deepwood after Mario's group completes their primary objective there. Wiggler has the unique ability to temporarily swim through the poisonous liquid flooding Deepwood Forest, with Mario and his companions riding on top of him. Wiggler can only swim in poison for about 15 seconds before growing too weak and capsizing, returning the party the starting shore with 1 Heart Point worth of damage accrued against Mario, Luigi, and the active partner. Mario and Luigi can jump while on Wiggler's back, allowing them to hit blocks and jump over obstacles. While part of Mario's team, Wiggler will randomly run across the battle field every 3 to 9 of the player's turns during battle, dealing 2 basic damage to each ground-based enemy. Mario's team can later return to Deepwood to initiate a sidequest in which they must deliver 7 different types of fruit to Wiggler found in distant parts of the Mushroom Kingdom. Upon completing this sidequest, Wiggler transforms into Flutter and gives Mario the Flutter Charm. With this, Flutter will appear in all future battles at least once every 3 to 9 turns, inflicting 3 basic damage to all ground-based and airborn enemies. Other Main Characters

Princess Peach is the benevolent ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom. It's no surprise that she's kidnapped by Bowser at the beginning of the game, but this time she's spirited from him by two strangers, who take her to Princess Rose's Castle in the Rose Kingdom. Always one to take advantage of a bad situation, she sneaks out of confinement and relays intelligence, mostly suspected locations of Vortex Shards, to Twink via the Royal Cellphone. She can also find and store rare items and badges for Mario's team in a secret compartment in her holding room. Until she teams up with King Rocco, Peach's special actions are controlled by the A button. Her two unique abilities revolve around the use of her parasol and her ability to create defensive barriers, which can be toggled via the R Trigger. To use her parasol, Peach presses A to jump and then again to open her parasol. This allows her to descend more slowly and to catch updrafts to reach higher elevations of the castle. Landing on non-spiked enemies will temporarily stun them. Her shield momentarily protects Peach from all attacks, reflects projectiles, and recoils and temporarily stuns enemies that contact it. If any enemy in the overworld makes contact with Peach, she will be captured and returned to her holding cell. King Rocco of the Koopas has had his small territory under siege from the Thorn Kingdom ever since he could remember. Surprisingly, the war has made Rocco emphathetic to the suffering of people from within and without his domain, so he gladly accepts refugees from the battle-worn areas of the Rose Kingdom, even converting much of his castle into shelter for them. In return, the people under Rocco's rule are incredibly loyal to him, and say nothing but good things about him. Still, Rocco is weary of constant fighting and is always looking for an olive branch to offer the Rose Kingdom, but all attempts madeaam resolving things peacefully are rebuked by Princess Thorn and her court. Eventually, Rocco's Castle is overran by the combined forces of the Rose Kingdom and Bowser's Koopa Troop, and he and most of his subjects are imprisoned in Rose's Castle. There, he makes plans with Princess Peach to work together to free their subjects and disable the castle's magical defenses. While at Thorn's Castle, Rocco is forced to ingest a weakening potion that takes away all of his strength and abilities. However, Peach can find Hot Sauce to restore Rocco's firey breath and concoct an antidote for the weakening potion, restoring Rocco's ability to tackle. From then on, Rocco and Peach form a team that supplement their strengths and weaknesses as they move about Rose's Castle. As a team, Peach and Rocco can switch positions with the Y Button. The leading character has two different abilities activated via the A Button, which can be toggled using the R Trigger. Meanwhile, the trailing character has access to once special move activated with the B Button. The combined forces of Peach and Rocco will be quickly overwhelmed if an enemy in the overwold manages to make contact with them. Peach's two leading abilities were already detailed above. Her trailing move is to encase her and Rocco in a protective, momentary barrier. This becomes important as later enemies have the ability to shoot projectiles, which stuns any character they contact and make life for the big and bulky King Rocco especially difficult. Rocco's two leading abilities are the Hefty Tackle and Fire Breath. The Hefty Tackle causes Rocco to barrel ahead at high speeds for a short distance, allowing him to break obstacles and knock overworld enemies away. His Fire Breath allows Rocck to burn the rose plants and vines growing throughout the castle, which can sometimes have beneficial effects, as well as also driving away overworld enemies. While trailing, Rocco can shoot a single, fast-moving fireball at a targeted enemy. This is helpful whenever Peach is using her parasol to move through the air, as she can't generate a defensive shield around herself while not on the ground.

So obviously in construction, you guys.

Paper Mario & Luigi is a fictional game that would be designed for the Nintendo 3DS. Taking place within the Paper Mario universe, it aims to combine elements of both the Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi RPG series into a single adventure.

Overview

  • Mario is the loveable and heroic plumber known the world over for his impressive jump and feats of courage. His adventure kicks off when both Princess Peach and Luigi are kidnapped and spirited away to Bowser's castle, prompting him to go rescue them both. In the overworlds, Mario's special abilities revolve around hammering obstacles and various transformations.
  • Luigi is Mario's kid brother and not always the adventuring sort.

  • Twink is a Star Kid and a very old friend of Princes Peach.
  • Sue Z. is a young, plucky Toad, and Chomps is her friendly but rowdy pet Chain Chomp. Both are from the small burg of Evergreen Town. Sue Z. decides to take Chomps and join Mario and Luigi after they successfully rescue Chomps from several mysterious baddies. Sue Z. can command Chomps to latch onto items, switches, and latches from afar, even over gaps!
  • Mr.
  • Blooprill is a science-obsessed Blooper wearing a drill mechanism on his head.
  • Prince Wallop is a princely Walleye, and the last descendant of the ancient Walleyptian civilization.
  • He's utterly unconcerned with the strange pollutants ravaging the woods, considering it just another variable to take account of, but joins Mario's group in order to protect him from the monsters plaguing the woods and allowing him to continue his studies.
  • Unlike most of Mario and Luigi's other partners, Twink cannot be switched out once he joins the party and will permanently follow Mario and Luigi in the overwold. If the player presses the button in the overworld, Twink will give some general info about the area that Mario and Luigi are currently in, as well as offering to give the player clues concerning the current objective or about nearby puzzles. Likewise, pressing X around NPCs or select objects will cause Twink to briefly talk about that person or object.
    • In battle, Twink doesn't fight directly but assists the team by giving it access to Star Power, a variety of techniques that serve to provide support to the rest of the party via healing or boosting stats. Either Mario or Luigi can choose to exploit Star Power, which will use up their current turn. Each time Twink is exposed to the ambient energy of a Vortex Shard, his range of Star Powers increase and the Star Power Gauge increases its maximum capacity by one unit.
    • In the field, Sue Z. can swing Chomps's leash to launch Chomps across gaps.
    • In the field, Mr.
    • In the field, Rodrill can drill into any soft soil or snow and takes the rest of the party with him when he does so. This allows him to dig up Beans and other buried treasures, travel beneath narrow openings and low clearances, and to scale up dirt or snow patches in walls. Pressing the partner action button again will cause Rodrill and the rest of the party to return to the surface.
    • In the field, Prince Wallop has the ability to interact with ancient Walleyeptian panels scattered throughout the Mushroom and Rose kingdoms, which often radically alter the immediate environment in some way. In addition, he has a powerful three-punch combo that he does whenever the partner action button is pressed without any unactivated Walleyptian panels in the immediate area. This punch can clear potential enemies from the overworld, in addition to breaking down any cracked walls or other objects that the punches make contact with.
  • Blitz is a solitary Bumpty who has been conducting a one-man guerilla war against Princess Thorn's forces after they begin constructing an airship refueling station at Hielo Peak. He initially mistrusts Mario and Luigi, mistaking them for the antagonistic Mateo Bros. Blitz manages to trap the protagonists, but is soon himself captured by the actual Mateo Bros. Mario's group manages to rescue him and add him to their roster.
    • In the field, Blitz has the ability to generate a spontaneous blizzard.
  • Lucia is an outspoken and charasmatic Lava Bubble.
    • In the field, Lucia has the passive ability whenever she is active to illuminate dark areas. In addition, when the partner action button is pressed, she temporary bursts into a larger flame. This allows Lucia to light torches, melt ice, burn away thorns and other obstructing vegetation, and to light the fuses for explosives.
  • Aine is an unknown fairy-like creature that is found imprisoned in Dr.
    • In the field, Lucia can allow Mario and Luigi to "enter" into the surfaces of walls, allowing them to interact with any markings, graffiti, or any other artwork as if they are actual platforms and objects. This is essentially an upgrade to Mario's Sticker Ability, which allows him to stick to walls but not to interact with any markings on them. She also has the ability to make Glitterbloom seeds sprout, which quickly develop into a variety of colorful platforms.
  • Mayzee Dayzee is a Crazee Dayzee who believes that she is the greatest singer who's ever lived.
    • Mayzee can sing, causing all nearby enemies in the overworld to fall asleep, making avoiding fights and first-strikes much easier.
  • Merlee is a Shaman residing in the sewers beneath Toad Town, where she resides in isolation with her 21 Blitties.
    • Merlee doesn't join Mario's traveling group.
  • Wiggler is a temporary party member that joins Mario's group in Deepwood Forest.
    • Wiggler has the unique ability to temporarily swim through the poisonous liquid flooding Deepwood Forest, with Mario and his companions riding on top of him.
    • While part of Mario's team, Wiggler will randomly run across the battle field every 3 to 9 of the player's turns during battle, dealing 2 basic damage to each ground-based enemy.

Still, Rocco is weary of constant fighting and is always looking for an olive branch to offer the Rose Kingdom, but all attempts madeaam resolving things peacefully are rebuked by Princess Thorn and her court.
