Paper Mario: Rush to the Ruby Shards is the 5th installment in the Paper Mario series. It takes place after Super Paper Mario, excluding the story found in Paper Mario: Sticker Star.

The game's plot revolves around Mario and friends trying to collect shards of a crystal meteor that was smashed into pieces. Shards of said meteor were spread all over the Mushroom Kingdom, and Mario is in a race against Bowser and his minions to find all of the shards. When all shards are combined, the user gets insane power.

Mario's Partners

Throughout the game, Mario, just like the first two installments, has partners. His partners have purposes in both the overworld and battle. They can be upgraded by Merlon by giving him 3 Shine Sprites. Every partner knows two moves upon joining the party, learns the third after being upgraded to Super Rank, and masters the final move after attaining Ultra Rank. A 5th move may be added through the use of a badge which can be won by clearing the trials set for each specific partner by a mysterious character after Chapter 7.

Koopax

Chapter 1

Koopax is a purple-shelled Electro-Koopa, born and raised on Isle Delfino. He decides to join Mario after Mario catches the Koopa who robbed his home. Koopaul's parents pay thanks to Mario with a Crystal Shard that landed in their backyard a few nights prior.

Outside of battle, Koopax can go into his shell and get the first-strike on enemies, being a useful asset for getting easy damage off on an enemy. 

Koopax does whatever he feels is right, unless it means losing someone close to him. He's tough and doesn't give up easily.

Koopax's dream is to move back to Isle Delfino whenever he gets the chance. "Hopefully someday I can ride Pinna Park's Ferris Wheel again".

Shell Toss

Koopax goes into his shell, and flings fimself at an enemy, attacking a single grounded enemy.
Power Shell

Koopax goes into his shell, and zooms by all grounded enemies, dealing damage to every enemy passed.
Shell Shield

Koopax goes into his shell, and the electric-spikes on his shell begin to glow. Purple lightning shoots down from the sky, hitting all enemies and dealing high damage.

Buy Guy

Chapter 2

Buy Guy is a very well of Shy Guy. He was raised in his parents' mansion, and inherited said mansion when they passed away. Buy Guy finds life very boring, and asks Mario if he could tag along for an adventure after Mario cleared Buy Guy's mansion of rats, and Buy Guy gave him a ruby shard in return. 

Outside of battle, Buy Guy can help locate hidden items, as when nearby items, a bold orange will appear over his head, effectively helping Mario track down items useful in battle.

Buy Guy comes off as a rather shy individual, but when someone Buy Guy knows is in danger, a hidden courage will emerge from him, and he will do anything he can to help the individual.

Buy Guy is also a magician. "With so much free time, I picked it up as a hobby".

Cane Bash

Slams his cane into an enemy's head with massive force.

Shoots his cane out like a boomerang, hitting all grounded enemies once on the way there and once on the way back.
Diamond Toss

Buy Guy casually throws a diamond at the nearest enemy, where it bounces off of every enemy's head one by one.
Magician's Curse

Buy Guy takes off his tophat, taps it once with his cane, and places it back on his head. Diamonds and gold begin to rain down from the sky, hitting all enemies onscreen and dealing massive damage.

Mini-Omb Shot

Shoots 1-5 small bob-ombs, depending how skilled your timing is. Hits enemies at random.
Jumbo-Omb Shot

Shoots 1-5 giant bob-ombs, depending how skilled your timing is. Hits enemies at random, and deals massive damage.
Bullet-Bill Blast

Shoots 1-10 bullet-bills, depending on how skilled your timing is. Hits enemies at random, and deals extreme damage.
Doomsday

Tord launches giant bob-ombs and bullet-bills into the sky, and then launches Mario himself. All of the bob-ombs and bullet-bills fall to the ground and hit the entire stage, blowing up everything. After the explosions, Mario and Tord land unharmed.
Bea

Bea

Chapter 4

Bea is a bold individual who never hides how she's really feeling. She gets extremely hyper at times, and enjoys having fun with her friends. She is a cheerleader on the "Spook High" cheer team.

Outside of battle, Bea can turn herself and Mario invisible, making it easy to pass by most enemies. She isn't a vital part of your team outside of battle, but she can be helpful at times.

Bea grew up with her parents and two sisters, Scarephia and Hauntelle.

PomPom Hurl

Throws three PomPoms at a single enemy.
Phantom's Shroud

Cubert

Chapter 5

Cubert is a small and curious penguin. He was raised on the cold "Sherbert Isle" with his 4 brothers. Cubert joined Mario's crew when Mario gave him the shinyest rock in all the land, and in return, Cubert gave him a crystal shard. Cubert asked if he could tag along for some fun, and Mario was fine with the idea.

Outside of battle, Cubert can pick Mario up and fly short distances with his propeller cap. Certain items can only by obtained by Cubert, so he is a useful member of the team.

Cubert enjoys walking in his freetime, and enjoys spending time with others. He doesn't like being alone, so you'll almost always see him with someone.

Flipper Smack

Slaps an enemy with his flipper.
Icecube Spew

Spits 1-4 icecubes at a single enemy, depending on how skilled your timing is. Each icecube has a 5% chance to freeze the target.
Hailstorm

Cubert picks Mario up and his propeller cap begins to spin. They fly up high into the air, and Cubert spits icecubes down randomly at enemies.
Snoulder

Runs offstage to the left, and comes back rolling a giant snowball. Depending on your timing, the snowball will damage 1-all of the enemies onscreen. Has a 33% chance to freeze.
Deep Freeze

Cubert blows icy wind out of his mouth, freezing every enemy onscreen. Once enemies are frozen, icicles begin to fall from the roof, hitting all enemies onscreen.

Throws a pickaxe like a boomerang, hitting all grounded enemies once on the way there and hitting all airborne enemies on the way back. Each enemy has a 33% chance of flinching.
Gem Geyser

Miles repeatedly hits the ground with a pickaxe, and gems begin to spew from the hole. Gems flood the stage, dealing high damage to every enemy, and each enemy has a 33% chance of flinching.
Arfur

Arfur

Chapter 7

Arfur is a rare breed of Chain-Chomp only found in Pianta Village, a small village located on Isle Delfino. Arfur joined Mario's crew when Mario found him, and gave him back to his owner. His owner, Ms. Shrowdale was so happy to see that he was okay, so she asked Mario if he could take care of him for her.

Outside of battle, Arfur can bark loudly, which scares nearby passerbys out of the way, making vital if you want to get by certain parts of the story quickly. He can also scare away enemies if they're about to get the first hit.

Arfur does not speak English, nor does he speak any other languages. He makes a single noise with his mouth, that noise being "Arf".

Cosmic Wreckage

A small planet falls from the sky, squashing all onscreen enemies, dealing high damage and causing them to flinch.
