Oil Drums are a staple of the Donkey Kong series, first appearing in the original arcade game, where they spewed out fireballs when lit up, either by a blue (presumably TNT) barrel in 25 Meters, or by the "pies" in 50 Meters. They also appear in this capacity in certain Mario vs. Donkey Kong games.
They returned in Donkey Kong Country as obstacles for DK and Diddy Kong to avoid, primarily in Torchlight Trouble and Oil Drum Alley. In the latter, some Oil Drums had their flames go out periodically; DK and Diddy had to use these Oil Drums to cross some abysses.
Finally, in Super Mario Odyssey, Oil Drums appear during the New Donk City Festival. Here, they are always lit, don't spew fireballs, and hurt Mario to touch. They also appear in the Darker Side's gauntlet during the Donkey Kong-themed 8-bit section.
Oil Drums also appear in Mach Rider as obstacles.
