The game plays similar to Mario Party, Wii Party, and Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival, as it features many party games. The main mode, Party Mode, is a board game where players collect Bronze and Gold Bits in order to win the game.
As players progress, they can earn currency that is used to unlock new content such as videos, character bios, and game modes in the Shop. The WIi U and Nintendo 3DS versions can also connect with each other so players can use the 3DS system as a controller in the Wii U version.

Nintendo characters are not playable, but they do appear throughout the game. Some characters appear on a certain board while others host one of the game modes or boards. These characters also trigger events when a player lands on a Hero Space or Villain Space.
