Super Mario Maker on the Wii U will be getting DLC featuring the new items introduced in this game (sans the New Super Mario Bros. 2 game style) during Q2 2016.
Gameplay in New Super Mario Maker is the same as its Wii U counterpart, but with several small differences. For one, the bottom screen is used to edit levels by using the stylus and the top screen is used to play levels the player has created. One of the new features in the game is the ability to scan in QR Codes to unlock new levels; these will be available at certain stores during the game's launch period.
Amiibo compatability returns from the Wii U game as stated above, and almost all amiibo that were compatible with the original game are compatible here as well. Event courses are no longer present and thusly the Mystery Mushroom characters from them are not in the game, but some (confirmed ones include Totem Link and SUPER MARIO KUN) will become available as DLC.
All course elements from Super Mario Maker return (with some exceptions). Two new game styles (New Super Mario Bros. 2 and Super Mario Land) and some new objects corresponding to them are added to the lineup.
- Bold text means that the object/game style/course style is new.
- Italic text means that the object/course style is exclusive to a specific game.
- Super Mario Bros.
- Super Mario Bros. 3
- Super Mario Land
- Super Mario World
- New Super Mario Bros. 2
- The following Mystery Mushroom characters will not be in this game; Mahjong Tile, Wii Balance Board, Silver Mario, Mega Yarn Yoshi, and Necky the Fox.
- Necky was removed as he is a downloadable costume in Japan. It's unknown why every other character was removed.
