New Super Mario Bros. Special is the latest installment in the New Super Mario Bros. series, released for the Nintendo Switch in 2021. Unlike other New Super Mario Bros. games which share roughly the same graphic style, Special instead opts for the opposite of the original New Super Mario Bros., featuring 2D sprites in a 3D space, resembling "the forbidden N64 2D Mario".

Gameplay[]

New Super Mario Bros. Special plays relatively similarly to the other installments. Mario can no longer Wall Jump, but he can kick items directly upwards again, as well as perform the Spinning Jump from Super Mario Maker 2's Super Mario 3D World style. Like the previous installments, the objective is to reach the goal at the end of the course, which is now represented with the Goal Roulette from Yoshi's Island, with the Flowers being replaced with various Coin rewards.

Special Skills[]

Skill User Description
Spin Jump Mario Mario performs a spinning jump, which goes lower than a regular jump, but allows him to safely bounce off certain hazard that the others can't, such as Piranha Plants and spiked enemies.
Scuttle Luigi Luigi kicks his feet in the air. If used on the ground, Luigi performs a single floaty jump, while if used in mid-air, Luigi performs a weak double jump.
Tornado Spin Toad Toad spins in place, similar to the Spin Jump in the New Super Mario Bros. series, with less height. This maneuver can turn around or even knock away enemies.
Subcon Lift Toadette Toadette jumps, making the jump sound from Super Mario Bros. 2, as well as her making a different pose. If she lands on certain enemies in this state, she will stand on them. Like this, Toadette can pick up the enemy and throw them.
Lick Yoshi Yoshi sticks his tongue out, able to swallow small enemies whole.
Dash Attack Wario Wario rushes forwards with tremendous speed, able to defeat enemies. However, defeating an enemy or hitting a wall will temporarily stop Wario.
Hammer King Dedede King Dedede swings his iconic hammer as a melee weapon. This move is faster than the Super Hammer in Super Mario Maker 2, but only somewhat.
Stack Goomba Goomba performs a special, low jump. Like this, if Goomba lands on another Goomba, they will form a Goomba Tower, shifting the playable Goomba's hitbox to the top. Items used will still come from the top of the stack.
Float Peach Peach briefly floats in mid-air.
Flower Twirl Daisy Daisy performs a spinning maneuver, creating flower petals around her. This can both be used for offense and mobility, similar to Rosalina in Super Mario 3D World.

Secret Exits[]

There are two types of Secret Exit in New Super Mario Bros. Special:

  • Standard Secret Exits are the Goal Roulette from Super Mario Bros. 3, which cycle through Super Mushroom, Fire Flower, Super Leaf, and Super Star. These Secret Exits either lead to hidden levels or
  • Special Secret Exits consist of 3 Goal Roulettes side-by-side. Upon entering the area, the timer stops and the player can hit the three blocks in any order. Getting 3 Mushrooms gives the player 10 coins, 3 Flowers gives them 25, 3 Leaves gives then 50 coins, and 3 Stars gives them a 1-Up. Special Secret Exits have different rules about their destination depending on the world.
    • Odd-numbered worlds up to World 9 bring the player to a secret world, from A to E.
    • Even-numbered worlds and World 11 bring the player to a Retro Level, which is a remixed version of a past 2D Mario level.
    • Worlds A-D bring the player to the next secret world in the sequence.
    • World E brings the player to the final level of World 11.

Hard Mode[]

After defeating Waluigi in World S2, the player can access Hard Mode from the title screen. In Hard Mode, the following changes are made:

  • Wario, King Dedede, Mary O., Koopa the Quick, E. Gadd, Rosalina, Goomba, and Donkey Kong are all available from the start.
  • Enemies have been replaced with tougher variations, such as Buzzy Beetles over Goombas, and all Piranha Plants being green.
  • Getting hit instantly reverts the player to their small form.
  • Various changes are applied to the bosses:
    • All bosses have changes strategies, alternate colour schemes, and take five hits to defeat.
    • Instead of turning giant, Donkey Kong's second phase has him pilot the Donkey Kong Plus mech from Mario Vs. Donkey Kong.
    • Omega Bowser is replaced entirely with Fury Bowser.
  • Every world's theme has been modified:
    • World 1 now takes place during fall.
    • World 2 has a purple colour scheme, like the first half of World 8 in the original New Super Mario Bros.
    • World 3 is now red, like Super Mario Odyssey's Sand Kingdom.
    • World 4 now has a vaporwave aesthetic.
    • World 5 takes place in a heavy snowstorm.
    • World 6 now takes place during spring.
    • World 7's clouds are now grey with every level taking place in the rain.
    • World 8 features locales from various Nintendo franchises, resembling the World of Light.
    • World 9 appears as an abandoned mineshaft with a primarily-grey colour scheme.
    • World 10 is forested, though still volcanic.
    • World 11 resembles Bowser's Castle as it appears in Super Mario Odyssey.
    • World 12 has various changes per-level.
    • World 13 resembles a high-tech Bowser's Castle as opposed to a space station.
    • Worlds A, B, and C all have a variety of changes per-level.
    • World D is based on Bowser's Fury.
    • World E takes place during the rain and features many neon lights, similar to Neo Bowser City.
    • World S1 is based on Mario's various NES games, including the obscure ones.
    • World S2 throws the other themes in a blender.
  • World S2's Boss Blitz and (final level) have been replaced with the Boss Tower and Boss Castle, a pair of The Arena-esque levels where the player must fight every boss in order in their normal and hard forms, respectively.
    • The battles in both stages always occur in the following order:
      • World 1
      • World 2
      • World A
      • World 3
      • World 4
      • World B

      • Waluigi
      • Walucien (Boss Castle only)
