Mushroom Kingdom Warriors (Japanese: スーパーマリオ 無双 Sūpā Mario Musō) is an action hack-and-slash title developed by Existence Software and Koei Tecmo and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch. The game is the third collaboration between Koei Tecmo and Nintendo, following Hyrule Warriors and Fire Emblem Warriors, and once again combines the gameplay elements of Koei Tecmo's Warriors series with the Super Mario franchise. The game is heavily based on the two aforementioned titles, though elements commonly featured in the Super Mario titles, such as the use of power-ups, have been integrated into the classic Warriors formula.

Story[]

Much like the Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors series that have pioneered the Warriors gameplay formula, Mushroom Kingdom Warriors features two distinct storylines that follow the two main warring factions: the "Mushroom Story" that focuses on the Mario Bros. and their allies, and the "Koopa Story" that focuses on Bowser and the Koopa Troop. Both stories run concurrent to one another, essentially telling the same story from two different points of view, and both must be completed in order to unlock the final missions of the game that converge them.

Synopsis[]

After Princess Peach disappears, Mario travels to Bowser's Castle to take down the Koopa King in order to rescue her. Upon defeating Bowser, Mario is told by Bowser that they had nothing to do with her kidnapping. After learning this, Mario hurries back to Princess Peach's Castle to try and find clues as to who her kidnapper is, but instead finds that her castle has vanished. Bowser, too, goes off to try and locate Princess Peach, believing him to be the only villain worthy-enough of kidnapping her, and in the meantime his castle disappears as well.

Gameplay[]

ACL Mushroom Kingdom Warriors Mario Card

The appearance of Mario's default Star Card, with zero Grand Stars. The design of all characters' default Star Cards are similar, though depict the character who can utilize the card instead of Mario.

Similar to other games in the Warriors franchise, Mushroom Kingdom Warriors is an action hack-and-slash title where the characters traverse sprawling battlefields with fairly tunnel-based layouts whilst fighting against large hoards of enemies. Unlike most Warriors games, which places heavy focus on a character's weapon which serves to base their gameplay style around, Mushroom Kingdom Warriors instead adapts the "Hero Card" system present in Warriors All-Stars, renamed to "Star Cards" in this title. Additionally, ? Blocks and Brick Blocks placed around the battlefields can be broken and may release power-ups to power them up in certain ways, such as temporarily granting a certain elemental effect to a warrior's attacks.

Star Cards[]

Star Cards replace the weapons featured in most other Warriors titles. Much like how weapons are used throughout the series, Star Cards embody the warrior's moveset, and may have various bonuses attached to it in order to change their play style in slight ways. Star Cards come in three major levels, denoted with icons of the appropriate number of Grand Stars. Each of these three levels of card also have a certain strength attribute, which is essentially the warrior's base attack stat for when they are in battle; this number is displayed as one to five Super Stars. The first Star Card that every character begins with is an exception to this, lacking any Grand Stars or Super Stars, and it will never have any bonus attributes.

Power-ups[]

Warriors[]

Characters from throughout the history of the Mario franchise will be playable warriors in the game. While the more-recurring characters serve as the main focus of the game's story, the game's cast also includes a pool of both heroes and villains from the spin-off Paper Mario, Mario & Luigi, Wario, Yoshi, and Donkey Kong franchises.

Mario
Mario MP100
Biography

Mario is a name known far and wide across the Mushroom Kingdom, and for good reason. Whenever Bowser and his Koopa Troop invades the peaceful home of the Toads, Mario is the first to step up and stop whatever plan that may be - which, more often than not, means Mario must rescue the kidnapped Princess Peach. Chivalrous and courageous, Mario will stop at nothing to help someone in need no matter what danger he might face.

Fighting Style

When it comes to combat, Mario relies on his trusty wooden hammer and the powers granted to him by the Fire Flower. Mario is a very acrobatic character who jumps about as he slams his hammer down to defeat enemies, and perform a variety of flips and spins to cover a wide area as he moves about. Thanks to the Fire Flower granting him pyrokinesis, Mario also lights his hammer aflame for certain attacks, sending out fireballs or projectiles of flames to scorch the area around him.
Luigi

Biography

Though he's the younger twin brother of the world-famous Mario, Luigi is a fairly obscure individual. Despite his lack of a reputation however, Luigi frequently joins his older brother in protecting the Mushroom Kingdom from danger. This is especially challenging for Luigi due to him being a cowardly individual with an intense fear of danger and ghosts. Ironically Luigi has also been forced to rescue his brother from the clutches of King Boo on multiple occasions, with the help of his friend Professor E. Gadd.

Fighting Style

Luigi wields Professor E. Gadd's Poltergust G-00 in battle, a vacuum-like device designed specifically to capture ghosts. Luigi primarily fights by swinging around the vacuum's hose as he tries not to get hurt. The cowardly Mario Brother also uses the G-00's special abilities to wipe out hoards of foes: the vacuum can fire a plunger to grab enemies, which Luigi can then throw around; it can summon a green clone of Luigi made out of goo named Gooigi; and it can even release some of the ghosts from the many mansions Luigi has been forced to use the device in.
Bowser
BowserNSMBUDX
Biography

Time and time again, the Mushroom Kingdom is plagued by the Koopa Troop: an army of invaders bent on capturing Princess Peach and usurping the peaceful land. At the head of this army stands the Koopa King, Bowser. Bowser desires nothing more than ultimate power over the Mushroom Kingdom, though his reasons for this remain somewhat vague. Some believe him to be infatuated with Princess Peach, while others simply believe him to be a power-hungry ruler who wants to expand his empire. Still, though he is an evil king at heart, Bowser is known to be somewhat kind and thoughtful to others - while most prevalent while dealing with his son Bowser Jr., Bowser will also stand up alongside Mario against any villain that tries to steal Bowser's goal away from him first.

Fighting Style

Though he is a powerful sorcerer, Bowser is characterized by his immense physical strength. When it comes to fighting enemies, Bowser tends to fight through hoards of enemies primarily by using his large, sharp claws to swipe at enemies and his ability to breathe fire from his mouth. Bowser can also roll up into a spiked ball in order to rip the ground up and bowl through enemies.
Bowser Jr.
BowserJrFortuneStreet
Biography

Though Bowser acts as the mastermind behind the Koopa Troop's schemes, Bowser Jr. is often at the head of the army leading his father's minions into battle against Mario. Junior is a fairly childish little brat who despises Mario for "bullying" his father time after time. Though Bowser likes to spoil his son and treat him better than anything else on the planet, Bowser Jr. is not immune to criticism and will be scolded when he goes against his father's wishes.

Fighting Style

Though Bowser Jr. is a resilient little Koopa, he lacks the ability to cover as much ground as his father; thus, instead of fighting by himself, Bowser Jr. instead pilots his Junior Clown Car into battle. The Junior Clown Car is equipped with an entire arsenal of weaponry from boxing gloves and drills, to a stockpile of Mechakoopas and a cannon. Bowser Jr. primarily utilizes the boxing gloves to combat foes directly, relying on his mech's other weapons through charge attacks in order to devastate particularly dangerous enemies. Some attacks also see Bowser Jr. make use of his Magic Paintbrush to cover enemies in paint, which causes them to take more damage from his attacks while they remain covered.

Trivia[]

  • Before the game's final name was chosen, other possible ideas were "Mushroom Warriors", "Super Mario Warriors", and "Mario Star Warriors".
    • Additionally, at one point the game was initially conceived as a direct crossover between the Mario and Samurai Warriors series, being set within a Mushroom Kingdom styled after feudal Japan with Orochi of the Warriors Orochi titles and Bowser merging together and acting as the game's main antagonist. While this idea was scrapped in favour of an entirely Mario-focused title, Existence Software has stated that it may be willing to return to this concept in the future.
