MuncherU

Munchers are sub-species of Piranha Plants debuting in Super Mario Bros. 3. They are immobile, near-indestructible plants that are harmful to the touch. Unlike most enemies, they are completely solid—players and items cannot pass through them.

They are generally black. However, in the Super Mario All-Stars version of Super Mario Bros. 3 (and its subsequent Game Boy Advance remake, Super Mario Advance 4), they were purple, except in World 6, where they were blue.

Defeating a Muncher[]

  • In the original NES version of SMB3, Mario could whack one with his tail in raccoon/Tanooki form, inexplicably turning it into an Empty Block. He can also use a P-Switch to turn them into coins in any version.
  • They are able to be turned into coins in Super Mario World 1 by way of a gray P-Switch. This, however, goes unused, as no level in the game features both in the same area.
  • They are vulnerable to freezing. Multiple Mario games show them as able to be enclosed in Ice Blocks. However, Ice Mario is unable to do so; exactly what CAN freeze them is unknown.
