Mr. Mime (Japanese: バリヤード Bariyaado) is a Psychic/Fairy-type Pokémon introduced in Generation I and an ice/psychic-type introduced in Generation VIII. Before Generation VI, Mr. Mime was pure Psychic-type.

Biology[]

Physiology[]

Mr. Mime is a bipedal, humanoid Pokémon. Blue growths resembling clown hair extend from the sides of its pale pink head, and there is a magenta circle on each cheek. Its jaw is curved inward, resembling the mouth of a wooden dummy. It has a round, white body with a magenta spot in the middle, light pink arms and legs that connect to its body via magenta spheres, and small white coverings over its knees. Its white hands resemble gloves with magenta pads on the tips of its white fingers and its dark blue feet curl upward at the tips.

Galarian Mr. Mime are mostly blue and white. Much like other Mr. Mime they also have blue growths resembling clown hair, however, these also extend and cover its cheeks. They have wider-shaped eyes and a blue nose. They have suit-like bodies comprising a white top, blue shoulder spheres, blue bottom trousers, and a diamond-shaped crystal that resembles a tie. They have mitten-like hands and feet that are more defined, resembling blue shoes with light blue soles, presumably made out of ice.

Behavior[]

Kantonian[]

Mr. Mime are very prideful of their pantomime acts, and will heavily slap anyone that interrupts them while miming. They can often be seen performing in the streets of cities and towns, where they mime in exchange for food.

Galarian[]

Galarian Mr. Mime are widely known in the region for their talent in tap dancing and are likely the result of Mr. Rime's influence over Mime Jr. imitating their dance steps. Pokémon are commonly seen performing for food in large cities, especially in the cold north of the region. In fact, some people believed that they evolved to tap-dance specifically to cater to the tastes of Galarian city dwellers, who were more likely to reward dancing Mr. Mime with food. In the winter months, they will visit towns further south as traveling troupes, much to the delight of children across the region.

Natural abilities[]

Mr. Mime are gifted with the art of miming at a young age, but as they mature, they gain the ability to make invisible objects by emitting energy from their fingers and minutely vibrating their fingertips to harden the air around them and form a wall. Barriers generated this way can repel harsh attacks, and its gestures and motions can convince watchers that something unseeable actually exists; once this is achieved, the perceived item will materialize.

Through their feet, Galarian Mr. Mime are able to control the temperature and create a floor of ice, which they can kick up to act as a barrier.

Evolution[]

Mr. Mime is the evolved form of Mime Jr.. It evolves from Mime Jr. when it levels up while knowing the move Mimic.

Galarian Mr. Mime evolves into Mr. Rime when it reaches level 42.

Appearances[]

Anime[]

Main article: Mimey

Ash obtains a Mr. Mime in the Episode Mr. Mime Time! which he shares with his mom Delia. Delia first mistook Mr. Mime for Ash, because Ash was dressed in a Mr. Mime outfit. Delia nicknamed the Mr. Mime 'Mimey', rendering him as one of the few Pokémon that is ever nicknamed in the anime. Mr. Mime has appeared with her ever since, helping her around the house.  In the Pokémon Journeys: The Series, Mimey was left at Cerise Laboratory to look after Ash, adding him to his "World Team".

Trivia[]

  • Despite Mr. Mime having "Mr." in their name, players can still find female Mr. Mime.
    • Due to this, three common nicknames for a female Mr. Mime are "Ms. Mime", "Mrs. Mime" and "Miss Mime".
  • Mr. Mime has received some criticism for its appearance as it apparently combines the worst aspects of clowns and mimes, two largely feared things.
  • Mr. Mime's German name, Pantimos, comes from the word pantomime, or acting without any props. This is a reference to Mr. Mime's signature miming.
  • Mr. Mime is one of the 9 Pokémon that have a type of Incense (in this case, it has Odd Incense in order to produce Mime Jr. eggs).
  • Though normal Mr. Mime can't be found in the wild in Galar due to its regional variant, one can be obtained in Spikemuth through a trade for an Obstagoon.

Origin[]

Mr. Mime is based on a combination of a clown, mime, and a marionette. It seems to specifically be based on pantomiming, the act of acting with "invisible" objects such as boxes or walls.

Galarian Mr. Mime seems to be based on the act of dancing rather than miming, specifically tap dancing. It may also be based on ice skating due to the ice being located at the bottom of its feet. Most of its body also appears to be based on winter clothing, such as its hands resembling mittens, its cheeks resembling earmuffs, and its chest resembling a scarf or tie. Its appearance also has a similar one to that of a snowman.

Etymology[]

Mr. Mime is literally Mr., a male title, and "mime".

Bariyādo is a portmanteau of "barrier" and "weird."
