Fantendo - Game Ideas & More

Mind's Eye is an umbrella fighting game created by IncarnateParanoia. It is inspired by the 1998 JoJo's Bizarre Adventure fighting game developed by Capcom. In it, the player follows the adventures of a group of characters from across the multiverse whose overabundance of spiritual presence caused their homes to be pulled out of space-time and into an amalgamated realm.

Gameplay[]

As mentioned earlier, the gameplay is heavily inspired by Capcom's JoJo's Bizarre Adventure fighting game, and borrows many elements from it. Each playable character in the game does not fight on their own. They are accompanied by a mystical being, a manifestation of their fighting spirit, or a second mind tethered to their body. By switching between Host Mode and Summon Mode, they can call up or dispel their psychic ally. Summon Mode is generally more powerful, have more attacking options, and even have special abilities, but struck summons take more damage than struck hosts, and taking too much damage in Summon Mode will result in entering Focus Break. A character in Focus Break is instantly stunned, and cannot use Summon Mode until they come to their senses.

During certain modes of gameplay, players select two fighters, and must switch between them to maximize success. During these modes, they are given access to a Tag In - a special skill utilizing the summon of the character that isn't currently in use. Tag Ins do not deal damage, and instead either enhance the user's abilities or impair the enemy's. Knowing when to use them is a must, though, because striking the summon before they can perform their Tag In can completely interrupt it while dealing heavily amplified damage to the summon's host.

For the sake of simplicity, this game only uses four attack buttons - Light Punch, Light Kick, Heavy Punch, and Heavy Kick - rather than the usual six. The "extra" two buttons are used to switch between Host Mode and Summon Mode and to activate Tag Ins.

Characters[]

Names Abilities
Okuyasu Nijimura
and The Hand

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure
Okuyasu is a dim-witted ruffian hailing from Morioh, Japan. He received his Stand, the immensely powerful The Hand, from a special arrow owned by his older brother Keicho during their search to find a Stand powerful enough to put their deformed and highly regenerative father out of his misery once and for all. He is impulsive and violent, making him a bit difficult to get along with at times, but underneath it all he is an honorable and kind-hearted young man.

Okuyasu's rough childhood has given him an impressive level of physical strength even without The Hand, but he lacks the creativity to use any especially useful techniques outside of Summon Mode. With The Hand active, though, he possesses incredible strength and the immensely useful power to "scrape away" space. He can use this ability to completely nullify weak projectiles, instantly teleport across short distances, and pull enemies to him from across the stage. Though he can dish out massive damage at close range, he has no good projectile options, and the time it takes for The Hand to perform its best techniques can make them easy to avoid.

Yukiko Amagi
and Konohana Sakuya

Persona
As the heiress of Yasoinaba's famous Amagi Inn, Yukiko spent her childhood being pressured into training for this role. After an encounter with a physical manifestations of her suppressed feelings, though, she discovered that she wanted somebody to help her run away from her responsibilities, but believed she was too weak to do so. Since then, she has begun to realize that turning her back on the Inn would be an insult to everyone that helped her all these years.

Yukiko's fighting style is an elegant dance of slashing fan attacks. Though weak individually, their fluidity and speed allows for a high level of creativity. Konohana Sakuya adds to these options with a plethora of magical techniques. The scope and range of her fire spells Agidyne and Maragilao make her a force to be reckoned with at a distance. However, her health and damage output are shockingly low, and leave her reliant on her combo potential and passive skills like the restorative Dia and the damage-boosting Fire Amp in order to be at her most effective. These passive abilities take time to activate, so zoning is a necessity for Yukiko.

Hau
and Alolan Raichu

Pokemon
Hau is the eleven-year-old grandson of one of Alola's powerful Kahunas. Determined to prove that he's stronger than his grandfather, he set off on his customary Island Challenge to hone his strength and become the most powerful trainer in Alola. (Though sometimes, it might feel more like his end goal is to eat every malasada he can find!) His easygoing and big-hearted attitude makes him easy to befriend, but his determination is not to be underestimated.

Without the support of a summon, Hau's greatest advantage is his fast speed and small size. When played right, he can be incredibly evasive. Summon Mode calls in one of his signature Pokemon, a surge-surfing breed of Raichu found only in Alola. With Raichu's speed on his side, Hau can move even faster, and is gifted with a wide variety of electrical and psychic traps to deploy. Most notable are Raichu's shock mines, which launch anyone that touches them - Hau included. Hau is a highly versatile character, but is heavily reliant on elaborate combos and planning to dish out most of his damage, and his high-speed attacks can be tricky to control.

Mephilia Venus
and Hresvelgr

Bravely Default
Mephilia is a prodigious summoner trained by the Sage Yulyana. A few years ago, her older sister Einheria forcibly separated her from her lover Suleiman, who later died of a crippling disease during his search for the legendary summon Susano-o. Upon learning of his death, Mephilia transformed into a sadistic monster. Recently, she has reclaimed a grip on at least some of her sanity, and seeks to fulfill the dying wish of her teacher by summoning the legendary Amaterasu.

Even in Host Mode, Mephilia boasts a wide array of ranged options using Black Magic, including the lightning bolts called down by Thundaga, the icy crystals released by Blizzara, and the infernal columns of Firaga. Summoning Hresvelgr increases her range and power even further, as she gains the ability to utilize the ebon eagle's powerful wing attacks. Hresvelgr's attacks boast massive hitboxes, and its wing beats can create twisters that send opponents hurtling away at incredible speed. But its massive size makes it especially vulnerable to Focus Breaks, and its attacks can be tricky to build combos with due to their slow delivery.

Peacock
and Avery

Skullgirls
Peacock was once the orphan Patricia Watson. She and her friend Marie Korbal were among the girls captured by the Medici Mafia. She would have been sold into slavery, but she was too defiant, and so the traders cut off her arms and gouged out her eyes as an example to her peers. She was rescued by Dr Avian of Anti-Skullgirl Lab 8, who returned her sight and gave her the arsenal necessary to defeat the latest Skullgirl, who was none other than Marie trying to enact her vengeance on the Medicis.

Peacock is a ranged menace equipped with an amazing variety of powerful projectiles and tricky techniques. These projectiles include cannons, revolvers, and anvils dropped down from above. However, she's vulnerable at close-range. With the pint-sized Avery on the field, their projectile variety expands even further to include the whole arsenal of Lab 8, which manifest as "imaginary friends." These imaginary friends chase enemies down or defend the user, performing unique attacks depending on the situation. Though more powerful than the average projectile, hitting them cancels their attacks and damages Peacock as if Avery were hit.

Natsuki Subaru
and Natsuki Subaru...?
Re:Zero
A carefree shut-in who was dragged into a fantastical parallel world one night during a shopping trip. He became close friends with a silver-haired girl and her spirit familiar, only to die alongside her. As a result of this death, however, he discovered the ability he now calls "Return By Death," which automatically rewinds time to a specific point upon his demise. Using this ability, he seeks to protect his newfound friends. He is goofy, overdramatic, impulsive, and borderline obnoxious, but has a good heart.

TBA!

Rei
and Zen

Persona
A pair of amnesiac students living in a corrupted and timeless version of Inaba's Yasogami High. Upon meeting two groups of Persona-users from distant time periods, the two set their sights on escaping from the school and returning to a world they hadn't even remembered the existence of. Zen is cold and cautious. He is extremely protective of Rei, but has trouble understanding emotions. Rei, meanwhile, is bubbly and upbeat. She is fanatic about all food, and has a blatantly obvious crush on Zen.

TBA!

The Tick
and Arthur

The Tick
A pair of legendary heroes, stalwart defenders of The City, and a dream team without peer. The amnesiac Tick is a superhero by day, superhero by night, with no self-control and no plan going forwards. Arthur is the brains of the team, providing cautious support from the sky whenever the Tick's thickheaded antics gets him into trouble. Between the Tick's unsurpassed physical might and Arthur's knack for plans and good ideas, the two are capable of solving any problem that comes their way!

TBA!

Light Yagami
and Ryuk

Death Note
Light is a perfect student on every level. He's a tactical prodigy, he excels at tennis, and he even boasts a small collection of "fangirls." One boring day, he discovered the fallen Death Note - a book that can kill the person whose name is written within. Using the Death Note and his wits, Light adopts the pseudonym Kira and begins to execute criminals and create a perfect world. He is accompanied by Ryuk, the apple-loving shinigami who originally dropped the Death Note.

TBA!

Yoshikage Kira
and Killer Queen

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure
Yoshikage Kira just wants to live a quiet life - an aspiration that seriously conflicts with his tendency to murder young women when his fingernails grow excessively. Fortunately, he is gifted with a highly versatile Stand that he has named Killer Queen, which allows him to completely dispose of all evidence of his crimes. More recently, however, a group of benevolent Stand-users have learned of his murders, forcing him to adopt the identity of Kosaku Kawajiri and go into hiding.

Without his summon, Kira is very weak, with low health and no ranged options. Killer Queen, meanwhile, is one of the most powerful summons in the game. It possesses devastating explosive attacks and the ability to summon the automated Sheer Heart Attack to pursue projectiles and enemies, and has a high damage output at any range. His most powerful ability, though, is the time-rewinding Bites The Dust. While time is rewound, damage and other status changes that occurred prior to its activation will repeat, allowing for Summon-crushing combos. However, Bites The Dust and Killer Queen can't be used simultaneously.

The Batter
and Alpha

OFF
Little is known about the Batter, save for his name and his goals. On the rare occasions when he speaks, he is blunt and to-the-point. He apparently serves some puppet master, and seeks to "purify" the many zones that make up his world by annihilating the spectres and monsters he meets on his journey. He seems to share a strange bond with spherical creatures known as Add-Ons, which accompany him on his journey. And, in case it wasn't obvious, he likes baseball. Nobody knows why.

Names Description
Chamber of the Fayth
Final Fantasy
The Chambers of Fayth are sacred rooms located at the center of every temple of Yevon. According to tradition, a summoner on their pilgrimage to Zanarkand must visit each of Spira's temples. They enter each temple's Chamber alone and pray for a way to destroy the gigantic monster known simply as Sin. If their prayers are heard, they gain the ability to call forth a new aeon. This particular Chamber can be found on the Isle of Besaid.
Iki Town
Pokemon
A small but highly traditional town in the Alola Region. Its closeness to the Ruins of Conflict where Tapu Koko is said to reside has made it the home of Melemele Island's Kahuna. As part of a festival to honor the legendary Pokemon that watches over them, trainers from across Melemele gather to battle each other and put on a good show. Those participating will even have the opportunity to battle the Island Kahuna for their Island Challenge.
Nijimura Mansion
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure
The decrepit mansion that was originally purchased by Okuyasu's father when he was working as a pawn for DIO. Since then, it has been used as a base of operations for the Nijimura brothers during their search for a Stand-user capable of killing their father. After being transported through time and space alongside Okuyasu, it has become a gigantic hive for the garrison of tiny soldiers and tanks that make up Keicho Nijimura's Bad Company Stand.
Tartarus
Persona
Every night at midnight, the Persona-users of Tatsumi Port Island are pulled into the Dark Hour - a twenty-fifth hour in which normal people transform into coffins, regular machinery is inoperable, and Gekkoukan High School transforms into the mysterious Shadow-filled tower referred to as Tartarus. The inside of Tartarus is a twisted and corrupt labyrinth where time flows strangely, and those delving in should constantly stay alert.

Trivia[]

  • Certain roster choices were made due to IncarnateParanoia's desire to represent certain series using characters that he hadn't yet used in umbrella titles.
  • Originally, Painwheel and Brain Drain were going to represent the Skullgirls series, but they were scrapped in favor of Peacock and Avery's more unique and varied fighting style.
