Megavitamins (カプセル Kapuseru: capsule), also known as Capsules, are the main items used in the Dr. Mario series by the eponymous Dr. Mario in his quest to rid the world of Viruses.

In standard gameplay, a virus is generated with two random colours, such as red and blue or yellow and yellow, and then begins to fall from the top of the pillbottle onto the collection of Viruses below. If four of the same-coloured Viruses or Megavitamins are placed in a horizontal or vertical line then they will all disappear, possibly clearing away Viruses and moving Dr. Mario towards victory; in certain games such as Dr. Mario World this limit is reduced to three.

Physical Appearance[]

Megavitamins typically resemble the generic pill often seen in cartoons, with a round, almost cylindrical form split between two symmetrical but differently coloured halves. In newer games with higher graphical fidelity their renders will show a bevel of sorts in which one of the two halves has a slightly larger radius that is noticeable along the border of the two.

The Megavitamins which appear in the main mode Dr. Luigi are distinct, with two normal Megavitamins appearing in an L-shape, still in their packaging. This packaging disappears once the Megavitamins are actually placed down during gameplay.

Game Appearances[]

Super Smash Bros. series[]

In the Super Smash Bros. series, Megavitamins replace the Fireball Neutral Special move belonging to Mario when playing as his clone, Dr. Mario, starting in Melee. Megavitamins act mostly the same but travel at a slightly different angle and lower speed and deal more damage; in Melee they are considered energy projectiles like the Fireballs and thus can be absorbed by moves like Ness' PSI Magnet, while in later Smash titles it is physical and thus cannot be absorbed. Like in the Dr. Mario games, each Megavitamin has a randomly generated pair of colours, but these do not change their effects. Megavitamins also make the sound effect of a Virus being cleared from Dr. Mario when they hit an enemy. They are also used in Dr. Mario's side taunt, where he retrieves one from his coat and tosses it into the air before catching it.

It has two Custom Move variants; the Fast Capsule, which moves quickly and doesn't bounce but deals less damage, and the Mega Capsule, which bounces slower but can deal multiple hits.
