Mariotale is a game for the Nintendo Wii U. The game is a combination of Nintendo's Super Mario Bros. and the independently released Undertale. The game's story is a retelling of the classic Mario origin story, albeit with some new elements. 

Gameplay

The game functions much like its predecessor, Undertale. The player controls Mario on the overworld and can move him in 8 directions. Mario can also jump to reach new areas and hit blocks. There are many NPCs for Mario to talk to, as well as shops where he can buy items. Some NPCs are hostile and initiate a battle upon contact with Mario.

In battle, Mario has four main commands: Fight, Act, Item, and Mercy. The Fight command gives the player the choice of using either a jump or hammer attack, which both are executed using action commands. The Act command gives the player info on the monster being faced and can also be used to interact with them. Item is pretty self-explanatory. The Mercy command allows the player to spare enemies non-violently, or flee from the battle entirely. Every battle in the game can be completed without fighting, though there are various differences in the story depending on whether or not you choose to fight.

When it is the monsters' turn to attack, the gameplay shifts to the Wii U Gamepad. In these occurances, the game resembles the classic Super Mario Bros. game, with the player being represented by Mario's 8-bit sprite. To avoid enemy attacks, Mario must be manuevered around various obstacles. Some of these obstacles have different colors, such as blue and brown. Blue obstacles can only be avoided when Mario is standing perfectly still, and brown obstacles can be stomped on to be defeated.
