Mario and Sonic at the Pyeongchang 2018 Olympic Winter Games is the sixth entry in the Mario and Sonic Olympic video game series. The game is also the first for the Nintendo NX system. The game features many new additions and changes to gameplay mechanics as well as using a brand-new engine as opposed to previous entries.

Gameplay

Gameplay in Mario and Sonic at the Pyeongchang 2018 Olympic Winter Games is similar to previous entries in the series in that there are multiple sports to compete in, and players can pick from a wide array of famous characters from both series.

Pyeongchang 2018 stripped the games down to a bare minimum, removing all Story and Party modes. Instead, a new feature was added, called Olympic.TV. This service allows players to compete live with others around the world as well as watching games and hosting tournaments.*

Local multiplayer remained a large aspect of the game, with turn-based tournaments available on all versions and live tournaments available on Wii U and Nintendo NX.

Also, both Team Mario and Team Sonic were removed from this version of the game. In their place were five teams: Team Speed, Team Skill, Team Heavy, Team Technic and Team All. A sixth, unlockable team were added to the Wii U and Nintendo NX versions of the game, Team Secret.

*Online tournaments and live-streams are not available in the Nintendo 3DS version of the game.
