Story Mode

Mario Kart: King's Mirror introduces a story mode featuring many different playable characters and stories as the search for the King's Mirror begins. There are four parts to the story, the Mario Story, the DK Story, the Wario Story and the Bowser Story. Completing all four will unlock the Final Story.

Main Plot

The King's Mirror, an artifact responsible for creating the Mirror Mode for Mario Kart races, has gone missing after being in the possession of the Mario Kart Officials for over twenty years. After informing the races of the artifact's existence, many characters head out to search for the mirror, either to bring it back or to use it for their own nefarious means. The Mirror has many other dangerous functions so it must not land in the wrong hands.

Mario Story

Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Princess Daisy and Toad set out to find the mirror. Their reasoning is that they don't want it to fall in the wrong hands and they want to continue the races. Toadsworth gives them all karts at Mario Circuit and they all decide to race to test them out. Yoshi also joins the group. After the race concludes, the gang decide to head to Toad Port as the Daisy Cruiser is to wait for them there to take them to the Mushroom Archipelago.

The group race down to Toad Port, starting on the hills near the port then racing down into the port itself. Upon reaching the end of Toad Port, the Daisy Cruiser arrives and the group gets on.

On the way to the Mushroom Archipelago, the Daisy Cruiser is attacked by Team Wario. They participate in a Balloon Battle against Team Wario. After beating them, Toadette is rescued and it is revealed she was captured by Team Wario. She joins the group and Team Wario are kicked off the ship. Toadette is unlocked as a playable character.

The group arrive at the archipelago and head to Dragon Mountain. They race on an altered version of the course, heading past the mountain and into the rainforest. Upon reaching the end of the course, the group fight an Ancient Golem in the jungle before continuing on.

The group reach the Mystery Manor where they collect 3 hidden Star Coins around the level. Upon doing so, a secret underground area of the manor is revealed. They then encounter E.Gadd who is working underneath the manor. He challenges the group to a bob-omb battle against him. One member of the group fights him. Upon beating him, E.Gadd joins the group. E.Gadd is unlocked as a playable character.

Upon leaving the manor, the gang is ambushed by Team Bowser. The gang are separated from Yoshi in the battle. Yoshi races through an altered GBA Riverside Park. Eventually, he finds Birdo and Birdo joins his group. Birdo is unlocked as a playable character. The two eventually head through an altered Yoshi Mines, where there is a secret passage that'll lead to Toad's Factory. At the end of the tunnel, they fight Baby Mario and Baby Luigi who are lost and are violent as a result. After convincing the two babies that they are on the same side, the duo join the group. The group of four head to Toad's Factory.

Back on Mario's side, the gang are defeated by Team Bowser. Bowser kidnaps both Princess Peach and Princess Daisy. Peach and Daisy are no longer pickable. The gang chase after Team Bowser by going through an altered Subcon Showdown. During this, they must avoid Bowser and his minions. At the end of the level, Team DK appears and attacks Bowser. With his guard let down, the group has the choice on saving Peach or Daisy. After saving one, Bowser knocks DK away and flees. Team Mario are forced to deal with an angry Team DK considering of Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, Funky Kong, Shy Guy and Lakitu. After defeating them, the group head to Toad's Factory.

Upon arriving, they find it has been taken over by Team Wario and Team Wario are currently in a fight with Team Bowser. Race through an altered Wii Toad's Factory and collect 3 Star Coins while avoiding the confrontation between Team Wario and Team Bowser. Afterwards, Rosalina appears and stops the fighting, also freeing the second princess. Rosalina joins the group. Suddenly, Team DK reappear and attempt to get revenge, but Yoshi's group reappear and force them to flee. Team Mario now consists of Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Toad, Toadette, Yoshi, E.Gadd, Birdo, Baby Mario, Baby Luigi and Rosalina.

Team Mario find out the King's Mirror has been found on Isle Delfino. They head through an altered WII U Sunshine Airport where they have to deal with the Koopa Empire who have taken over the airport. Afterwards, they take a plane to Isle Delfino. Upon arriving there, they found that the mirror was stolen and they head through the Delfino Tour course where they arrive at Delfino Plaza. The four teams all arrive at the same time and it becomes a massive battle. They battle through Delfino Plaza in a Balloon Battle against Team DK, Team Wario and Team Bowser.

After the victory, it is revealed that the person who stole the mirror was in fact Smithy, a villain who once terrorized the Mushroom Kingdom. He shows off the King's Mirror before fleeing to the skies. All four teams agree to team up to take down Smithy.

DK Story

Donkey Kong decides to head out to find the King's Mirror, hoping he can sell it to the officials for lots of bananas. He visits an altered Wii Luigi Circuit to get a new kart and races against five toads in a 3 lap race to test out his skills. Upon beating them, he decides to head back home and inform the other Kongs on what is happening. He sadly lacks a boat.

He decides to head through the Shiver Sea and tests his endurance by doing several laps around the sea. He is also ambushed by an Ice Bully, but the bully is defeated. Upon arriving on the Mushroom Archipelago, he visits Diddy Kong and Funky Kong. They agree to help, but Funky is busy working so Diddy joins the group. Diddy Kong is unlocked as a playable character.

They race each other through an altered DK River Park and into the rainforest, collecting bananas in the meantime. They challenge each other to collect the most amount of bananas.

Team Wario then appears, but Donkey Kong believes they are here to steal his bananas. Donkey Kong attacks and they fight a tough 2v4 Balloon Battle against Wario, Waluigi, Petey Piranha and King Boo. Afterwards, they encounter a lost Shy Guy. Shy Guy asks to join the group and Donkey Kong agrees to it.

The group of three head through the entire Pirate Armada, believing pirates may have stolen the mirror in the first place. At the end of the Pirate Armada, they fight a Pirate Captain, but after he is defeated, it is revealed the pirates know nothing about the King's Mirror.

Upon landing back on the archipelago, they are ambushed by Team Bowser. They fight in a tough battle and win, but Bowser's cheap tricks cause Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong and Shy Guy to all be seperated. Diddy Kong ends up at SNES Choco Island 1, where he encounters Hammer Bro. Hammer Bro challenges him to a race as he is bored and offers lots of bananas to the victor. After winning a 3 lap race, Diddy Kong wins and Hammer Bro joins the group. Hammer Bro is unlocked as a playable character.

Donkey Kong ends up back home and Funky Kong has finally finished what he was doing. Funky Kong joins the group. The duo head through an altered Wii U Thwomp Ruins as they try and find Diddy Kong. After completing the course, they reunite with Diddy Kong and the new membe Hammer Bro. Shy Guy also reappears and rejoins them. Funky Kong is unlocked as a playable character.

They end up at Subcon Showdown where they attack Bowser to get revenge. However, Team Mario is also present and get caught up in the conflict. Team Bowser gets away and the two remaining teams fight it out. It is all the members of Team DK against all the members of Team Mario. Team DK defeats them, but Team Mario strike once more and the team are left defeated.

The group head through an altered SNES Vanilla Lake 1 as they head to Toad's Factory, the place where the other teams are currently fighting. Upon arriving, they attempt to ambush Team Mario, but the combined force of Baby Mario, Baby Luigi and a Chain Chomp forces them to flee.

Team DK find out the King's Mirror has been found on Isle Delfino. As the Sunshine Airport is not open to them, they take to the skies with the DK Cannon and race through an alternate version of Beat Block Skies. After beating it, they encounter the Giant Parabeetle. After defeating it, they glide down onto Isle Delfino and into Delfino Plaza. The four teams all arrive at the same time and it becomes a massive battle. They battle through Delfino Plaza in a Balloon Battle against Team Mario, Team Wario and Team Bowser.

After the victory, it is revealed that the person who stole the mirror was in fact Smithy, a villain who once terrorized the Mushroom Kingdom. He shows off the King's Mirror before fleeing to the skies. All four teams agree to team up to take down Smithy.

Wario Story

Wario and Waluigi decide to head out to find the King's Mirror so they can cause all sorts of mayhem with it. They head to Luigi Circuit to get karts. They race against each other to see who is the better racer before heading back home to get some supplies. After the race, they head to N64 Wario Stadum where they find out it has been taken over by piranha plants. They race around the track, removing all piranhas from the stadium. Petey Piranha then appears and fights them in a balloon battle. Afterwards, it is revealed that Petey mistook Wario Stadium for Mario Stadium and Wario invites Petey to their group, promising revenge against Mario. Petey Piranha is unlocked as a playable character.

Petey informs them that his partner, King Boo, invaded Waluigi Colosseum, most likely mistaking it for Luigi Colosseum. The group head there and fight their way through an army of boos in a possessed colosseum before reaching King Boo. Petey informs him of the confusion and King Boo joins the group. King Boo is unlocked as a playable character.

Team Wario have no transport to the Mushroom Archipelago, the place where the King's Mirror is rumored to be. They hear that the Daisy Cruiser is leaving to the island soon. They kidnap Toadette at Toad Port so they can use her for blackmail and then they sneak on and attack Team Mario, fighting them in a balloon battle. However, they end up defeated and Toadette is freed from their clutches.

Team Wario are forced to swim to the Archipelago. They land ashore and begin to face through an altered Buried Bone Ruins to reach the rainforest area. Afterwards, they encounter Team DK. Although they did not have any hostile intentions, Team DK attack them. After a tremendous battle, the battle ends in a draw and the two forces go their seperate ways.

The group of four trouble makers end up on GBA Ribbon Road, wondering if the King's Mirror can be found on this unique track. After some trouble with a local Pianta, they leave the road after no luck.

They then spot Team Bowser heading towards Toad's Factory. They race through an alternate DS Shroom Ridge while making sure that Team Bowser does not spot them. Upon arriving at the factory, Team Wario unleash a sneak attack catching Team Bowser off guard. They then battle it out in a balloon battle. Afterwards, Rosalina arrives to stop the fighting. Team Wario flee the factory.

Team Wario find out the King's Mirror has been found on Isle Delfino. As they are unable to use the Sunshine Airport, they search 3DS Shy Guy Bazaar for a way to search for transport. The bazaar is then attacked by Dry Bowser. Upon defeating him, he joins the group. Dry Bowser is unlocked as a playable character. The townsfolk also reward Team Wario with a cannon that'll shoot them into the sky in the direction of Isle Delfino.

However, due to Waluigi tinkering with the cannon, they are launched completely off course and land on GBA Rainbow Road. They race through an alternate version of it where they find an airship operated by some goombas. They kick them off and fly it down towards Delfino Plaza. The four teams all arrive at the same time and it becomes a massive battle. They battle through Delfino Plaza in a Balloon Battle against Team Mario, Team DK and Team Bowser.

After the victory, it is revealed that the person who stole the mirror was in fact Smithy, a villain who once terrorized the Mushroom Kingdom. He shows off the King's Mirror before fleeing to the skies. All four teams agree to team up to take down Smithy.

Bowser Story

Bowser decides the King's Mirror is the perfect tool to conquer the world. He heads to Bowser's Castle where he plans to get an amazing kart where he can dominate the competition and secure the mirror. His son, Bowser Jr, appears and races against him. Upon winning, Bowser Jr joins the group. Bowser Jr is unlocked as a playable character.

The duo take an airship to the Mushroom Archipelago, a series of islands where it is believed the mirror rests. They land at Wii U Electrodrome, where the father and son decide to wreck lots of havoc and take over the drome for themselves. Several toads then challenge them to a race, suggesting that if they lose they leave. After easily defeating the toads, Bowser takes over the Electrodrome and sends reinforcements to take over the entire archipelago.

Team Bowser heads outside to cause some trouble and they encounter Team DK. With the element of surprise on their side, they easily defeated the team and seperate them. Happy with his victory, Bowser heads to 3DS Neo Bowser City where he plans to upgrade his kart even more to make it even more evil and powerful. A Koopa Troopa is the one who races him to test the kart and afterwards, the Koopa Troopa joins the group.

At Mystery Manor, Team Bowser encounters Team Mario and successfully ambushes them, kidnapping both Princess Peach and Princess Daisy in the process. They fight in a balloon battle against them and end up victorious. Team Bowser flee through an altered Subcon Showdown to get away from Team Mario. When all seems good for them, Team DK reappears and catches them off guard, causing one of the princesses to be rescued. Team Bowser manage to flee in the end.

Team Bowser return to their old base, GCN Bowser's Castle to get more supplies. They then find out it has been taken over by an army of Dry Bones due to the castle not being used in a while.
