Gameplay[]

Mario and All-Stars: Alter-Racing is a mascot-based racing game, similar to Mario Kart 8 and Sonic and All-Stars Racing Transformed, in which players must race against each other using characters from various game franchise, from Nintendo, Sega, Capcom and others, although it features many new mechanics and improvements, differs from the Mario Kart series. At certain points in a race, vehicles can alternate between car, anti-gravity racing, boat and plane modes. The car mode handles similarity to the Mario Kart series, in which players can earn boost by drifting around corners or performing tricks whilst in the air. Anti-gravity racing also handles the similarity to Mario Kart 8, in which certain parts of a track can allow players to drive on walls and ceilings. During these sections, players can bump into other racers or special bumpers to trigger a Spin Turbo, which gives them an extra speed boost. Boat mode features true boating physics, inspired by a water-racing arcade game, Hydro Thunder, requiring players to consider their vehicle's turbulence. They may also be affected by waves made in the water, some of which can be used to leap into the air and perform stunts. Plane mode, the fastest of the three forms, gives players the freedom to move both vertically and horizontally. Like the other modes, players can 'air-drift' around corners to earn boost and can also perform rolls to quickly adjust their position, earning boost for narrowly dodging obstacles. Similar to Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, players alternate between these modes by driving through blue transformation gates. Certain tracks in the game terraform as players proceed through them, offering different play-styles between each lap.

Several varieties of weapons from the Mario Kart and Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing series have been added in this game, including the Boomerang Flower, the Rocket Launcher, the Crazy Eight and the Super Horn. All-Stars moves from Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing also have been added, though these are awarded slightly differently compared to the last game, and can now be used in online multiplayer.

Playable characters[]

There is a total of 40 playable characters (including twenty third-party characters). The game features specific platform rosters which has all 40 characters.
