The Legend of Zelda: A Link between Realms is an upcoming Legend of Zelda Game, set late in the Downfall Timeline. It is a spiritual sequel to Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past and Legend of Zelda: A Link between Worlds. The game takes place across Hyrule which has changed drastically due to an increase in Mechatronics and Engineering, from the discovery of the Lanaryu Mining Facility.

Gameplay

The Game functions similar to previous 3D Zelda Games (Ocarina of Time, Wind Waker, Twilight Princess & Skyward Sword). As with Link between Worlds, all items are part of an energy meter which is drained per usage (the energy meter has 4 upgrades available in the game), the main change to this meter is that it is now a circle which decreases towards the centre. The game focuses around the many different paths Link can take to travel around Hyrule, while the image of the realms in the gallery displays the main paths/roads of each realm there are many secret connections which hide treasures and characters with information.

The game returns to Link to the Past's use of Dungeon found items as most items are found within dungeons. The game also retains puzzle styles within the dungeons similar to Link to the Past and Link between Worlds (for example, the Fire Sanctuary has the player de-activate 5 Fire Pillars before accessing the boss).

Each Realm is themed around the Dungeon's element. With the exception of Forest (This is combined with Earth) and Electricity (This is combined with Desert) all the dungeon elements are present as well as three realms named; Power Realm, Courage Realm & Wisdom Realm. These realms focus around the virtues of the triforce and have a Tomb and puzzles related to their theme.

The Non-Linearity in the game is formed after the initial introduction in which the player is able to battle the dungeon bosses in any order (The Virtue bosses are available after defeating Virion and conquering all their Strongholds). Aside from Dungeon Bosses and Mini-Dungeon Bosses, a new group of bosses titled "Field Bosses" appear in the game, these are simple bosses some of which were strong enemies, big enemies or bosses from previous Zelda Games. They take less hits to defeat than a Mini-Boss however stronger variants are fought within the depths of the strongholds. Each Field Boss encountered in a stronghold guards a lock to the Tombs as well as a piece of heart.

Pieces of Hearts return as collectibles which increase the player's total health. The Main Bosses possess a total of 11 Heart Containers, the Field Bosses hold 24 Pieces of Heart or 6 Heart Containers in total and each realm hides 3 Heart Pieces (Except Power, Wisdom, Courage and Castle which hold 4). This total to 30 obtainable Heart Containers, the most of any Zelda Game. Aside from Heart Containers there are also other collectibles which reward the profile with the parts of the Triforce of Courage, completing all allows Link to deal double damage, the 8 collectibles are:

1) Monster Souls - 20 different souls each is placed in the Soul Jar and is found after killing 20 of the designated enemy

2) Luminous Pearls - 10 Pearls which are found in the various water-bodies of Hyrule, they make the Pearl Necklace

3) Wolf Howls - 12 Pictures of Wolfs howling at night found in each realm

4) Time Orbs - 24 Orbs found underground near Triforce Symbols

5) Gerudo Seal - A 6 Piece Seal which is obtained from being an active member of the Gerudo Community and given by each of the six Gerudo Elites found across Hyrule. This seal also gives Link a discount at the Gerudo Trading Caravans

6) Great Gears - 3 Gears which require payment to be activated (5000 Ruppees each), once all three are activated, field bosses will appear less frequently

7) Palace Stones - 7 Stones from ancient palaces, each one requires a different item to reaach it, with all seven obtained Link can obtain the Music Box which plays old Musical Themes from previous Zelda Games

8) Fairy Queen Subjects - 120 Coloured Fairies found everywhere in Hyrule, some require various items. They emit a faint glow at night and sing during the day

Story

The Game takes place during a time of great peace, where most of the Zelda races have united under the Single Hylian Flag. Some races such as Gerudos and Imps have had issues with being united with Hylian, Goron, Zora and Kokori due to past grudges.

The Player (Link) lives in the southern region of Hyrule's Castle Realm, in a small village. The player is told to report to the castle as they have been accepted as a Knight of the royal guard. The player heads there and after recieving the uniform (Green Tunic), Sword and Shield as well as testing their Sword capabilites, the player is invited by Princess Zelda to the Greater Gear Tower, where at the Peak, Zelda shows the player the surrounding realms of Hyrule. She explains that the land is split up into the realms to prevent possible wars however most species in Hyrule are unaware of this. Looking into the distance Link can see Forests in the Earth Realm, Volcanoes in the Fire Realm and a Great Ocean in the Water Realm. Zelda then shows Link how to use the Realm Control which moves the realms for access to realms from the different gates.

After Link and Zelda return to the Castle however, the throne room is stormed by monsters which capture Zelda and knock Link out. Link awakens in a prison cell in the dungeon of the Castle. Link escapes regaining his Sword and Shield fighting off various monsters such as Moblins, Bublins and Octorocks. After finding a Bow, Link reaches the King's Quarters where the King is found dead in his bed, the player also notices Zelda trapped in a web. Zelda tells Link to run, however before the player can escape a giant arachnid (Sclarex) drops down and tells Link that the revival of Ganon is starting and that Link will make a noble sacrifice to the cause. Link and Sclarex fight however with the Bow, Link is able to defeat Sclarex who retreats along with the monsters. Zelda explains to Link that the revival of Ganon means that the Pedestals in each realm have been activated (excluding the Castle's realm as it does not have a pedestal), Zelda continues explaining that Link must go and find the Pedestals and purge the evil of each within. Zelda also takes Link to the Temple of Time and permits Link to take the Master Sword. Zelda continues explaining that Link can use the Realm Control as much as he wants however, Link must be in the Castle Realm to activate it.

Link then goes out of the Castle and using the Realm Control moves the realms around allowing for him to access different areas and find the Pedestals. After finding and de-activating three, Link recieves a message from the Mailman. The Letter explains that Link is to give up his cause as Zelda has been captured again. Link returns to the castle to find it has again been taken over by monsters. Fighting through the castle again unlocking an underground passage to reach the throne room, Link encounters a Lava Demon (Virion) who is holding Zelda hostage. With the Ice Arrows Link found in the Castle, Link is able again to save Zelda. After the monsters and Virion flee the castle, Zelda explains that there are three realms which have had their pedestals tightly locked away and Link will have to conquer the strongholds in the other realms to unlock the pedestals' dungeons.

After de-cativating another three pedestals, Link recieves another message which notifies him that another invasion force has attacked and has again captured Zelda as well as the Castle. Link heads back to the castle and finds it again under siege. Link heads to the Throne Room and finds a secret passage which has paintings showing the major events of Legend of Zelda: A Link between Worlds. Along the way Link also finds the Fire Arrows by shooting regular arrows into a Sun Statue. Once Link reaches the end of the passage the enter into the Temple of Time and find a weather creature (Yakivo) is holding Zelda captive. Again Link defeats the creature who flees however drops a parchment. Link and Zelda read the parchment which says "Ganon will rise again, the Pedestals only need to be opened to summon the King, Darkness will reign". Link and Zelda are suddenly greeted by a mysterious spirit who reveals itself to be Impa, having been the last Shiek in existence. She explains that while Ganon will be revived regardless of Link's actions, by closing all the pedestals Ganon will not return with full power. Link then heads out to hunt down the final three pedestals which have finally had their locks broken (Power, Courage and Wisdom).

After defeating the creatures within and de-activating the Pedestals, Link sees Hyrule Castle begin to shake as it rises into the air and beneath it a giant, intimidating castle rises from beneath the earth, being Ganon's Castle. Link proceeds through a back entrance where the Temple of Time was. Working his way to the main hall, Link finds Sclarex, Virion and Yakivo who all flee with the pendants of Virtue, into the three corners of the castle. Link again confronts three and defeats them. However upon returning to the main hall the three challenge Link one last time as a trio instead of fighting seperately. Link however defeats them and unlocks the door to the throne room. Link heads inside where he sees the Triforce locked down by chains of Darkness. Link approaches and is contacted by Impa who tells him that after the revolution of technology in Hyrule the Triforce was seen as an item of herecy and was sealed away. Impa continues by saying that thrusting the Master Sword into the chains should free the Triforce. Link does so and the Triforce descends to Link however before Link can make a wish, the Triforce splits into the three with two flying through the doors on the other side of the room and the Triforce of Courage descending into Link giving him extra power. Link then heads through the door and sees Zelda trapped in a crystal with Sclarex, Virion and Yakivo chanting around a circle with Ganon's trident in the middle. The Triforce of Wisdom flies in and enters into Zelda while the Triforce of Power slowly approaches the Circle creating lightning and a bright flash to which Ganon emerges from. Ganon however immediately kneels panting and coughing up blood, concerned about Ganon's state Sclarex, Virion and Yakivo sacrifice their spirits to Ganon to permit him extra strength. Ganon then gets up and destroys the walls around the room. Link  gets up and sees Ganon looking down at him, who lets out a roar.

Link and Ganon engage in battle, initially in the crumbled Castle, however Ganon creates illusions of the various boss rooms from the Palaces, Sanctuaries, Temples and Tombs. Each stage requires Link to use the item from that location to damage Ganon. Once Link and Ganon return to the Castle Ganon absorbs Zelda and gains the Triforce of Wisdom allowing him to use more magic. After defeting in Ganon after five rounds of Dead Man's Volley Ganon falls to his knees and begs for mercy. Link walks up to Ganon preparing to stab the Master Sword through Ganon's skull however the Dark King grabs Link's left hand activating the Triforce of Courage and absorbing it himself. Link falls and gets up seeing Ganon now in posession of all three Triforce pieces, however during the transformation a small opening in Ganon's chest allows Zelda to throw Link the Light Arrows. Link then utilizes the Light Arrows to hurt Ganon when he leaves weakened chest open. After three arrows the the Triforce of Wisdom is seperated from Ganon and locks into a Triforce symbol in the wall, Link repeats this process forcing the Triforce of Courage and Power to exit Ganon who forcibly releases Zelda. Zelda awakens and uses Light Magic to trap Ganon. Link then absorbs the energy of the Triforce into the Master Sword which seperates the Wings of the Sword summoning four more blades creating a Penta-Blade Master Sword. Link thrusts the Sword through Ganon's skull who lets out a screech of agony before turning to stone, melting and finally dissipating into the air and exploding shortly after.

Link and Zelda return to Hyrule Castle with the Triforce placed in Temple of Time's floor and the Master Sword in its pedestal.

Items

Like all Zelda Games, items are used by Link to help him in his quest. Each dungeon in the game (including the Castle) holds an item which Link can use to defeat the dungeon's boss as well as find hidden secrets in the realms. It is importnat to note that no item needs to be used in its own realm to find secrets (for example, the Fire Rod is never used in the Ice Realm).
