Final Smash Hyper Shock Wave Attack

Knuckles (ナックルズ・ザ, Knuckles) appears as a newcomer in Super Smash Bros. V as a paid DLC Character. He is part of the 5th and final Ballot Pack which was released on December 24, 2020.

"A loner by nature, Knuckles is independent, headstrong and serious, yet gullible and short-tempered to a fault. He is fully devoted to his duty, spending most of his time on Angel Island protecting the Master Emerald, and rarely cares for anything that is not important. When his friends and others are in need of his help, however, Knuckles can always be relied on being willing to leave his post and prove himself a true and good-hearted hero. He is also one of Sonic's oldest friends and rivals."

He is confirmed to have no alternate costume.

He is voiced by Travis Willingham and Nobutoshi Canna in japanese.

Up B does not go very far vertically.

Although strong, does not have very effective combo throws (down throw is the only truly viable one, but not so effective against better DI) so relies heavily on raw damage

Some of his really strong attacks come out quite slow


Knuckles is really what you’d get when you’re given a more aggressive and brawler-styled, less-spin dash reliant Sonic. Most of his moves are taken from Sonic Battle and various other Sonic games.


Ground Attacks

Name Damage Description
Neutral Attack Punch Attack 2%, 3%, 4% Knuckles jabs forward with both hands then finishes with an uppercut. With each swing, he moves forward slightly.
Neutral Combo
Dash Attack 10% Knuckles swings his fist back then forward while slowing down towards the end of the animation.
Forward Tilt Double Punch 6% Knuckles punches both fists forward. It causes him to move forward slightly.
Up Tilt Knuckles Upper 8% Knuckles swings a fist upward.
Down Tilt 7% Knuckles punches low.
Forward Smash Deep Impact 17% Very similar to Sonic’s forward swash but the wind up is slower and the execution is slightly slower. Because of this it’s much stronger. Causes explosion in which the size is based on how long it’s charged.
Up Smash 14% Knuckles swings both fists upward. Resembles a move in Sonic Battle.
Down Smash Megaton Hook 15%, 12% (late) Knuckles begins to twist his arm before unleashing a spin hook that creates a dusty shockwave on the ground. His fist is the strongest hitbox. Based off the same spin punch that appears in Sonic Battle.

Aerial Attacks

Forward Aerial 13% (clean), 9% (late) 5% (latest) Knuckles swipes both fists forward. Based off one of his air moves in Sonic Battle.
Back Aerial 15%, 10% (late) A back kick with high knockback. Comes out quite quick and is amazing for KOs.
Up Aerial 9% Spins in a vertical corkscrew to perform a drilling headbutt.
Down Aerial 14% (knuckles), 12% (fist) Knuckles slams a fist downward in an acrobatic manner. Has meteor hitbox. Resembles his Air Mole Bomb animation in Sonic Battle.

Grabs and Throws

Forward Throw 1%, 8% (throw) Knuckles holds the opponent up then slams them down forward as if they were a basketball.
Back Throw 7% Knuckles turns around throwing the opponent behind him.
Up Throw 1%, 8% (punch) Knuckles holds the opponent and punches them skyward.
Down Throw 10% Knuckles slams opponent into the ground fiercely as they’re popped up allowing for possible follow-ups at very low percents.

Special Attacks

Neutral Special Hammer Punch 14% (around knuckles), 7% (far) Knuckles claps his hands together then punches the ground with force. The move has two different hitboxes. One on the ground immediately next to Knuckles and one anywhere else on the ground of the same platform Knuckles is on. The former being much more stronger. The move does not affect any opponent on a different platform or in the ear. Both hitbox have vertical knockback with the one directly around Knuckles being much stronger knockback and damage wise. The move is very, very good on Final Destination and Omega stages as the opponent’s only options are to shield or jump. When done in the air, it functions as a downwards punch with a heavy and strong meteor effect/spike and it’s executed a bit slow though.

Side Special Rock Free Fall 13%, 9% (late), 1% (debris), 3% (air pebble) Knuckles digs picking up a pretty large in proportion boulder and throws it forward. Has medium range when the boulder hits an opponent it breaks producing smaller pieces that have separate but very, very, weak hitboxes. Very good for edgeguarding. When done in the air, Knuckles throws a much smaller and weaker rock. It comes out very quick and is a very good way for Knuckles to approach and gimp offstage opponents.

Up Special Spiral Upper 9% (hit 1), 5% (hit 2), 3% (hit 2 late) Knuckles performs a rising uppercut as he spins slightly going up. His fists are ignited when fire when he performs the move. The move has two hits. The first involves Knuckles throwing the first punch and the second occurs as Knuckles is rising. If both hits connect the move can deal massive knockback and KO (at higher percents) but the only way both can connect is when the move is done at point blank range. Only the second hit occurs when Knuckles performs it in the air.

Down Special Spin Attack 7%-15% Knuckles curls up into a spiky ball and rolls forward at high speed with limited distance a trail of red aura. The longer it’s charged, the stronger it is. If used in the Knuckles comes crashing down while curled up initiating a meteor on impact. Knuckles does not continue rolling after hitting opponents so the move is not able to used for quick follow-ups rather than raw damage which is Knuckles. To make up for this, the move is very safe on shield as it cancels immediately as Knuckles hits a shield allowing Knuckles to roll forward or backwards or of course, choose any other option.

Final Smash Hyper Shock Wave Attack 55%, 1.5x damage/defense boost Knuckles flies up going into his Hyper mode then slams right into the ground creating a shockwave that destroys everything in it’s path on both sides. He stays in his Hyper mode for 15 seconds afterwards in which he gains a damage and defense boost.

DOWN - Knuckles stands straight pointing his thumb at himself saying “Bring it on!”

On Screen Appearance

Knuckles enters the stage in ball form from the foreground and flexes a arm forward.

Victory Animations

Knuckles glides downwards slamming fist first into the ground then kneels throwing a thumbs up saying “Guess that’s about it!”.

Knuckles spin charges onto the scene, stops, the punches his fist upward with his eyes closed, smirking, saying “Alright!”

Knuckles shifts his back quickly toward the screen, folds his arms then faces back saying “Give it up!” Resembles his victory animation from the Sonic Advance Ice Mountain Zone level.

Losing Animation

Knuckles is seen clapping with his head turned away.

Victory Theme

The origin of this theme is from Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), which itself is an orchestrated remix of the tune that plays when Sonic passed an Act in Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Shared with Sonic

Fighting Stance

Resembles his fighting stance from Sonic Battle. He’s seen standing, moving his legs, with his fists up.

Idle Poses

Knuckles puts a hand on his hip, then taps the ground with a foot.

Knuckles folds his arm and chuckles slightly.


Simply walks with fists ready.


Quite Similar to Sonic’s with the exception that he holds his fists out forward. A bit slower than Sonic’s.
