Jet the Hawk, or simply Jet, is a recurring anti-hero in the Sonic the Hedgehog series, whose most prominent appearances have been in the Sonic Riders series. He has exceptional skill riding Extreme Gear, a type of hovering board, which has garnered him an impressive reputation. He is the leader of the Babylon Rogues, a trio consisting of himself, Wave the Swallow, and Storm the Albatross, and takes his position and reputation very seriously. Cocky, brash, and extremely competitive, Jet only plays to win, and has formed an intense rivalry with Sonic the Hedgehog, making it his foremost goal to best him in speed and prove himself as the best on Extreme Gear.

History[]

Jet was born into the clan of thieves known as the Babylon Rogues. They were descendants of the Babylonians, an alien race that got stranded on Earth and eventually became a legendary band of thieves. They continued their legacy of theft for generations, and when Jet's father retired as leader, the role was passed down to his son. Together with Wave the Swallow and Storm the Albatross, they formed the next generation of Babylon Rogues, with Jet taking leadership.

During their time, they garnered an impressive reputation for their skill in riding Extreme Gear, with Jet being referred to as the Legendary Wind Master. In addition to criminal activity, Jet was also determined to find the secrets of the ancient Babylonian Garden, having heard stories that the treasure within could be unlocked with the Key to the Babylonian Garden, which was entrusted to him by his father.

Jet and the rest of the Babylon Rogues debut in Sonic Riders. Jet was in his office aboard the Babylon Rogues' airship when Wave and Storm inform him that Dr. Eggman was coming with a proposition. Eggman explains that he came because they had the Key to the Babylonian Garden, and at first Jet refused to work with him, though he was persuaded when the doctor explained it could unlock the Babylonian Garden, and ergo the secret treasure, if all seven Chaos Emeralds were collected. Eggman warned him that Sonic would get in the way, but Jet assured him that he would be no trouble.

With the Babylon Rogues working with Eggman, the doctor hosted the EX World Grand Prix, where the entry fee was one Chaos Emerald, and the winner would obtain all seven. Jet, Wave, and Storm traveled to Future City to steal a Chaos Emerald located there. Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles noticed this and gave chase, but the Babylon Rogues blew past them thanks to their Extreme Gear. Eventually, they would also join the Grand Prix alongside Amy.

Between races, Jet started to grow suspicious of Dr. Eggman's motives. He sent Storm to see if the doctor could be hiding anything from them, and waited with Wave for his return in Green Cave. Jet notices Sonic trying to practice Extreme Gear, and as Wave lectured him, he started sneaking away to try and taunt Sonic for his inability to master Extreme Gear. After this, Jet and Wave met up with Storm in Sand Ruins before the finals, who brought Eggman's diary. From it, they discovered the treasure in the Babylonian Garden wasn't a gem as Eggman made them believe, but rather the ancient technology of the Babylonians that Eggman wanted to use to conquer the world. Having no interest in that, Jet considered leaving the competition, but Wave convinced him the technology could still be valuable.

During the finals, Jet mocked Sonic one last time before they raced. Sonic was about to claim victory, but Wave detonated a bomb they secretly planted below Sonic's Extreme Gear that caused it to explode, letting Jet pull ahead. Having won, he mocked Sonic again before using the Chaos Emeralds with the key to unveil the Babylonian Garden. While Jet was awestruck, Dr. Eggman snatched the key for himself, making off to the garden. Sonic and Jet chased him on their Extreme Gear, having a race in the process. Sonic ended up winning and reclaiming the Key to the Babylonian Garden from Eggman and tried giving it back to Jet. Being a sore loser and seeing it as an act of pity, Jet refused to accept it, with Wave taking it from Sonic on his behalf.

Jet, Wave, and Storm made their way inside the Babylonian Garden, and accidentally awakened the Babylonian Guardian. Together with Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy, they defeated the guardian and uncovered the treasure, which ended up simply being a magic carpet, much to Eggman's disappointment. However, Jet was still fascinated by his ancestry. With the Grand Prix over, Jet told Sonic to be ready the next time they faced off.

Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity[]

Jet appears in Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity with the other Babylon Rogues. A few months after the EX World Grand Prix, the three were treasure hunting Gigan Rocks to find the Ark of the Cosmos, an engine unit for the Babylon Garden. There, Jet deactivates the trap to search for the Ark. When a shooting star appears, Jet wishes for the power to defeat Sonic, only for some falling meteors to create a tremor that triggered the trap, causing boulders to fall on them. However, Jet activated the Ark of the Cosmos, altering gravity and saving himself and his team, realizing he could beat Sonic with this kind of power.

Back on the Babylon Rogues' airship, Wave explains to Jet that she analyzed the Ark of the Cosmos, discovering there are five in total. Jet then orders her to make a radar that will allow them to track down the rest. Storm then comes into the office with news, showing that a SCR-GP stole an Ark of the Cosmos from the Megalo City Museum. The three set a course for Megalo Square in pursuit of the Ark.

Jet and the others arrived at Monopole, and he took down the SCR-GP and caused it to crash, but lost track of the Ark of the Cosmos. Searching for it, Jet overheard Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy nearby, who had an Ark of the Cosmos of their own. Just before Jet exploded in anger, he is joined by Wave and Storm; having overheard Sonic and his friends talking about MeteorTech, the three decide to investigate. At MeteorTech, they meet up with Sonic and demand Amy give them the Ark of the Cosmos. The hawk then challenged Sonic to a race, but as security robots started entering the area, Sonic and co. left, with Jet tailing them.

Sonic and Jet raced to the control room of MeteorTech, and discovered that the corporation was owned by Dr. Eggman. He reveals that the mother computer had an Ark of the Cosmos in it, and the robots under MeteorTech were on a rampage in search of the others. Jet then realized Amy and the Ark she had was missing, and saw via video screen that she was being chased by Storm and a SCR-HD. He and Wave returned to the airship to wait for Storm's return, and were pleased to see he came back with two Arks of the Cosmos. Wave then describes the "lightless black" written in ancient Babylonian text in regards to the Arks of the Cosmos, but Jet brushes it off. He quickly realizes that both Arks were stolen by Dr. Eggman, who plans to find the rest and use them to take over the world. The Babylon Rogues then pursue the doctor on their airship.

Jet and Wave in Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity.

Arriving at Crimson Tower, Jet and his team ran into Sonic and his friends. Jet challenged the hedgehog to a race to Eggman, the winner receiving all the Arks of the Cosmos and title of the fastest thing in the universe, which Sonic accepted. The race ends in a draw, with both stopping Eggman at the same time. The Babylon Garden appeared due to all the Arks of the Cosmos being present, Jet being bewildered that Sonic handed him all the Arks and accused him of leaving an unsettled race, though Sonic promised to settle it at the next Grand Prix. Soon after though, SCR-HD took all the Arks of the Cosmos and transformed into the Astral Babylonian, forming a black hole in the sky, the "lightless black" that threatened to consume the world Wave mentioned earlier. The Babylon Rogues, Sonic, and the others used their Extreme Gear to go into the black hole's engine and stop Master Core: ABIS, destroying it and saving the world.

The black hole gone, Jet explained to his team that he was content with staying on earth, especially since he wanted to settle his rivalry with Sonic. Later on, he found Sonic at Monopole and challenged him to another race through the city, which he accepted.

Sonic Free Riders[]

JetMemory3

Jet in the opening of Sonic Free Riders.

Jet reappears in Sonic Free Riders. Seeking fame, Jet and the Babylon Rogues entered the World Grand Prix hosted by King Doc (who in the end is revealed to be Dr. Eggman) as Team Babylon. When asked by Omochao, Jet states that he is confident in his racing abilities, and the only opponent that mattered to him was Sonic.

During their story, Jet and his team first face Team Dark, consisting of Shadow the Hedgehog, Rouge the Bat, and E-10000B. Jet thought they were overconfident, though during their face-off, he did complement Shadow and Rouge's skills with Extreme Gear. In the end, Team Babylon beat Team Dark, with Jet gloating how blind they were to their faults and that only Sonic could provide a suitable challenge. Their next opponents were Team Rose, consisting of Amy, Cream the Rabbit, and Vector the Crocodile. As they slowly secured their victory, Jet believed it couldn't have gone any different. Sure enough, Team Babylon beat Team Rose, with Jet taunting their poor skills.

Having made it to the finals, Team Babylon faced Team Heroes, consisting of Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles, for the championship, with Jet's only interest being defeating Sonic. During their race though, Jet grows suspicious that Wave tampered with Team Heroes' Extreme Gears to give them the edge. Having beat Sonic, Jet tried to smear it in the hedgehog's face (with no luck), but overheard they had technical problems with their Extreme Gear, which Jet figured Wave was behind. Not feeling right about the victory, Jet calls for a rematch to ensure absolute victory. Jet beat Sonic once again the following race, having securing the championship for Team Babylon, and promising Sonic a rematch in the future.

At the end of the tournament, the teams arrived to the awards ceremony to claim their prizes, only for Dr. Eggman to reveal he was the one behind the Grand Prix the whole time, making them race one last time against his "ultimate Gear jockey". It ended up being defeated, and Jet mocked Eggman's incompetence. However, Eggman reveals he was using his E-10000 robots to collect data on the racers to create the ultimate Extreme Gear he can use for his own agenda, before challenging Jet and the others to another race. Defeating him again, it is revealed that E-10000B was being controlled by Metal Sonic the whole time, feeding false information to Eggman and using the real data for his own Extreme Gear. Jet and the others watched as Sonic raced Metal Sonic, the former winning.

After Metal Sonic's defeat, the Grand Prix comes to a close and it was revealed the rewards were fake. Wave and Storm complain that this was a waste of time, but Jet remains optimistic, saying he had a fun time in the end.

Mario & Sonic series[]

JetMemory4

Jet competing in Snowboard Cross in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games.

Jet appeared as the third rival encountered in Festival mode in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games, challenging the player to Snowboard Cross (a possible nod to the Sonic Riders series where he rides Extreme Gear). Jet again appears as a rival encountered in London Party Mode in Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games, this time challenging the player to Dream Discus. In Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games, Jet is the rival of Area 3 in Legends Showdown, challenging the player to Snowboard Parallel Giant Slalom.

Jet makes his playable debut in the series in Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. However, he is exclusive to the Football and Duel Football events. He is also playable in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, once again exclusive to Football.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl[]

Jet appears as a Trophy in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, obtainable at random.

"A hawk who is the leader of the Babylon Rogues and also goes by the moniker "The Legendary Wind Rider." When it comes to Extreme Gear racing, there is no one better. Jet's extremely competitive and takes tremendous pride in winning, so you know things are going to be exciting when he takes on the speedy Sonic in an Extreme Gear battle."

Jet also appears as a Sticker, using his 2D artwork from Sonic Channel. When equipped, he increases the power of leg-based attacks by +17.

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U[]

In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U, Jet appears as a Trophy again, which is obtainable at random or by purchasing it from the Trophy Shop.

"Jet the Hawk, a.k.a. the Legendary Wind Master, has a lot of cool stuff going for him besides his name. He's amazing on his Extreme Gear, a flying skateboard. Unfortunately, he's no hero—he leads thieves called the Babylon Rogues, and he can't stand losing to Sonic in anything."

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[]

Jet appears in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as an Advanced-class (★★) Support Spirit, increasing movement speed when equipped, and taking up one slot of a Primary Spirit. Unlike other Spirits, the Jet Spirit has no Spirit battle associated with it, instead made available by summoning the cores of the Pidgey and Akari Hayami Spirits.

The Jet spirit uses his artwork from Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Description[]

Appearance[]

Jet the Hawk

Artwork of Jet in Sonic Riders.

Jet is a hawk with emerald-green feathers, with dark-green feathers on his head and wrists. He has a bright-yellow beak and white feathers on his front torso. The edges of his eyes also have red and black stripes, resembling face markings. The feathers on his head are stylized like a mohawk, with dark-green tips. He also has three large tail feathers.

For attire, Jet wears a pair of white gloves with red-and-black cuffs and gray bands around each wrist. He wears red shoes that have a black stripe pattern along the middle, which also have patches of white and gray soles. Jet also wears a pair of yellow goggles over his head, which he puts over his eyes while riding Extreme Gear.

Personality[]

Jet is highly arrogant and holds himself to ridiculously high standards. He has a massive ego, considering himself the fastest thing alive, and generally looks down on everyone else. While he does occasionally praise others for their skill, he either makes backhanded compliments or keeps his compliments short before quickly following with an insult. Jet has a very snarky sense of humor and enjoys humiliating others, loving to boast about his skills and rub his victory in his peers' faces. Even with Wave and Storm, Jet cites them with insults and usually ignores them.

Jet is extremely prideful and protective of his reputation as the Legendary Wind Master, which leads him to being a sore loser and not accepting any pity from his opponents and considers it a direct insult to his character. In spite of this, he stands by his losses and will work hard to overcome them, promising his opponents it won't be so easy to defeat him next time. He also disciplines others who seem to be more overconfident than he is.

Despite being leader of the Babylon Rogues, Jet doesn't really take his position seriously and remains unconcerned in the face of issues unless they directly affect him in the moment. As a leader, he's very strict and doesn't like showing signs of weakness to everyone. In reality, he's rather laid-back and nonchalant, though he doesn't like showing this side of himself to others he doesn't already know.

Jet enjoys Extreme Gear as well as any activity that requires speed or stamina, and takes a lot of pride in winning competitions, especially Extreme Gear races. While extremely competitive and only wanting victory, Jet appears to have a code of honor, and will not cheat or use underhanded tactics to get the upper hand. This is shown in Sonic Free Riders where he opposes to Wave seemingly tampering with Team Heroes' Extreme Gears. He will only accept victory as long as it's a fair game and will actively seek a rematch of unexpected circumstances occur. While he doesn't always show good sportsmanship, Jet enjoys facing off against opponents he deems worthy, specifically Sonic, and can be content with whatever the outcome is after a good race.
