Gameplay[]
Super Smash Bros. Obliteration! retains the classic gameplay of the Smash series. Here, up to twelve characters/players battle each other in a stage, and unlike most of the fighting games in the gaming universe, here in Smash, life bars don’t appear here, instead, a percentage meter is used to calculate the damage obtained. The higher the percentage of damage a character has, the farther distance will the character be launched away. To KO an opponent, the player needs to hit and launch the opponent so hard until it exits out of the stage limits, showing an explosion, which means the character has been knocked out. Also, the character can be KOed if he has received a strong attack or crushed by a platform. Due to the fact that the Nintendo Switch has two remote controls, the player can use them as a way to fight and box, along with the use of the buttons, in a similar way to the ARMS videogame. However, the player can opt for the casual gameplay, with the smaller screen. The graphics are now more bright and vibrant, with realistic tones, though still has that cartoony and charming touch.
Single Player Modes[]
Smash Mode[]
The classic Smash Mode is back, and up to 8 players can battle with their favorite characters. Unlike Super Smash Bros. for 3DS/Wii U, the Smash for 8 option is merged with the normal, and thus stages won’t be affected despite the size, instead stages will be bigger than usual. Also in the Character Selection Screen, the player can adjust the rules to their liking, like, deciding if the battle ends in a certain amount of time, or via lives, or even Smash Money.
Now, Special Smash has been merged to the Rules of the battle, which means that a handicap option is shown to make easier or harder the battle, There are 10 Difficulties similar in format to the difficulty meter found in 3DS/Wii U ranging from Effortless as Pie - Nothing Harder, Players can change and control the difficulty to their liking.
Difficulties and their levels.
Intensity level | Numeric values | Cost per 0.1 increment |
---|---|---|
Effortless As Pie | 0.0 to 0.9 | -5 gold |
Easy | 1.0 to 1.9 | |
Standard | 2.0 to 2.9 | 8 gold |
Tougher | 3.0 to 3.9 | 12 gold |
Challenging | 4.0 to 4.9 | 15 gold |
Heatin' Up | 5.0 to 5.9 | 20 gold |
Extra Spicy | 6.0 to 6.9 | 25 gold |
Infernal | 7.0 to 7.9 | 45 gold |
Raging Inferno | 8.0 to 8.9 | 75 gold |
White Hot | 9.0 to 9.9 | 85 gold |
Nothing Harder | 10.0 | 100 Gold |
The difficulty chosen - in addition to making the CPU opponents tougher and the prizes greater - determines what is faced at the end of the game, with higher intensities adding new foes to the mix. In the game, the encounter is as follows,
Inclusion | Intensity range |
---|---|
Master Hand | All Intensities |
Crazy Hand | 7.5 - 9.0 |
Master Core | 9.0 and Up |

Super Smash Bros. Obliteration features an Adventure Mode that is very similar to the one that is found in Melee. unlike Smash Run Adventure Mode can only feature up to one player at a time as they travel to multiple lands within the Nintendo Universe in a Vintage Side-Scrolling Fashion, Completing Adventure Mode will win the player a trophy of the character in their prime fighting stance.
Super Smash Bros. Obliteration/Throwback Journey
Smash Run (The Lost Kingdom)[]
Smash Run has returned and can now can feature up to 10 people playing at once in a mission to score as many items and star upgrades as possible, the time can now be extended to upwards of ten minutes, for a maximum of 10 people, as they race against time to find the source of an unknown entity within an ancient mythical civilization, who seeks to obliterate all time and everything in existence as we know it.
The Smash Run starts with a five-minute adventure course involving exploration of a large, expansive, but unnamed island in the sky. Players are tasked with strengthening their attributes via finding items in chests, as well as defeating numerous enemies from both Brawl's The Subspace Emissary, 3Ds/Wii U's Story Mode, and other game series. Bonus stages hidden behind doors in the map also allow for players to take part in challenges that can give them further boosts to their various attributes and more prizes.
Special events that occur on the map can also provide further benefits to players, such as by defeating an exceptionally powerful enemy or finding a hidden room filled with chests. In Group mode, players can trigger traps that will drop giant Bob-ombs, by activating a switch item that can appear from treasure chests. Enemies, however, can attack the player and make them drop their power-ups sometimes; getting KO'd is also a possibility, leading to significant penalties to the player's stat boosts.
Smash Run supports character customization like most of the other modes in the game. However, Smash Run expands on this formula, further adding a variety of unique "Powers" that can be granted to competitors; these are activated by tapping their respective icon on the 3DS's lower screens (ranging from healing, attacking, and boosting), and can only be used on the Smash Run map in order to activate their effect; Equipment-type Powers that grant a held item when the player spawns are applied the same way, but don't appear as an option on the screen while playing. The lower screen can also display a map of the Smash Run arena, alternating between screens by tapping the left-hand or top area of the touch screen. When the five minutes have expired, all power-ups collected are added to the character's stats, and the players compete in one of a variety of "Final Battles", selected randomly, lasting one minute. After a Smash Run match, players will obtain the trophies, character customization items, gold, and powers that they collected while in the adventure course.
The following items can be found by defeating enemies, opening chests, and completing miniature missions within the mode. Touching these items increases a specific stat for the character, giving potential benefits in the game's final challenge. Additionally, every item can be found in different sizes, which alters how much of each stat will be boosted, depending on the size it might increase that stat by 3, 10, 30, 100 or 200 points. Stat boosts with clocks on them also appear, which give a large temporary boost of 500 points.[1] Players can have a maximum of 1000 points for each category. Fighters can also build up their stats by performing the actions corresponding to them. In addition to pickups for the stats below, rare stars that pulsate a variety of colors can appear in the mode; grabbing them increases all of the player's stats. Taunting raises a random stat by 1. There is also a rare stat booster shaped as a 2x that is called a Stat Megaboost that will double all stat gains for a period of time. It appears on the stage rarely/in Challenge Doors that are Treasure Rooms, as well as very rarely being dropped by enemies.
Super Smash Bros. Obliteration/Lost Kingdom
Rival Smackdown Mode[]
New To Super Smash Bros. Obliteration, Rival Smackdown Mode functions similar to Smash Mode in the fact that they both have the classic mode format, However Instead of fighting Master Hand, Crazy Hand, or Master Core, You will instead fight a 'Rival" In a Similar Manner to the Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat Series Of Games. Rival Battles Are Harder than Master Hand and Start With a Difficulty as low as 5 to as high as 10. You Must Deplete your foe of their Stamina before your Stamina is completely depleted, if you are defeated by your rival, it is an automatic game over continue is not an option in the final round.
The Rival Is Determined By The Total Time That is completed by the player at the final level, The Mode largely mirrors Smash Mode Except for the Final Fight. The Only Characters that cant possibly be fought in the Rival Battle are the Mii Swordfighter, Gunner, Or Brawler. The Final Battle Against the Rival Will Be Randomly Selected from one of six possible Groups that are featured on the titles of the All Star Matches in Event Match Mode, and Which are determined by the final score by level 12. Clearing Rival Smackdown Mode Will Win A Trophy Of The Character Assuming Their Prime Victory Pose.
Super Smash Bros. Obliteration/Rival Smackdown
Multi-Man Obliteration[]
The classic defeat em all mode first found in Melee and Brawl has returned by popular demand! The mode is more about endurance and survival rather than progress, as the player is only given a single life to outlast a slew of Mii Swordfighters, Gunner's, and Brawler's, within the allocated Time Limit, if the player is overpowered and Ko'ed it is game over, Beating certain match modes in Multi-Man Obliteration can unlock various, characters, stages, stickers and trophies that can be collected.
10-Man - challenges the player to defeat ten opponents. This is the shortest of all the Multi-Man challenges, usually taking between 10 and 20 seconds to complete for an amateur player, though world records are all within roughly 6 and 7 seconds.
100-Man - challenges the player to defeat 100 opponents, which get tougher as the mode continues. This usually takes a few minutes for players to clear, and can get quite difficult towards the end of the mode. The final Wire Frame to be fought will always sustain noticeably less knockback than the others.
3-Minute - challenges the player to survive for 3 minutes, defeating as many opponents as possible.
15-Minute - challenges the player to survive for 15 minutes, defeating as many opponents as possible. Foes get stronger as time passes by. Despite the need for endurance, simple strategies such as spamming a certain move or evading the opponents altogether will generally suffice.
20-Minute - Challenges the player to survive for 20 minutes, defeating as many opponents as possible within the time limit, there is a greater need for endurance and the opponents, become progressively more difficult as time goes on simple strategies such as spamming a certain move or evading the opponents altogether will generally suffice.
30-Minute - Challenges the opponent to survive for 30 minutes, defeating as many opponents as possible, Opponents tend to become more difficult in this mode around the 25 minute mark, making the need for endurance greater, however Spamming and evading some of the opponents could suffice here also.
45-Minute - Challenges the opponent to survive for 45 minutes, defeating as many opponents as possible, Opponents tend to become more difficult in this mode around the 40 minute mark, making the need for endurance greater, however Spamming and evading some of the opponents could suffice here also.
60 Minute - Challenges the opponent to survive for 60 minutes, defeating as many opponents as possible, Opponents tend to become more difficult in this mode around the 55 minute mark, making the need for endurance the greatest in any timed Obliteration match, however Spamming and evading some of the opponents could suffice here also, but more manpower is needed to outlast for a full hour against an endless stream of Switch Fighters.
Rival - challenges one player to defeat more opponents than their Rival (an AI copy of their character) before they are themselves defeated in an otherwise endless match. Rivals respawn after being KO'd. The player's final score is equal to the difference of number of opponents they and their Rival defeated. This mode replaces 15-Minute mode in SSB4. Endless - challenges the player to defeat as many opponents as possible before being KO'd themselves. It has no time limit nor enemy KO limit, and as such can go on for an indefinite amount of time.
Endless - Challenges the player to defeat as many opponents as possible before being KO'd themselves. It has no time limit nor enemy KO limit, and as such can go on for an indefinite amount of time.
Cruel - challenges the player to defeat as many opponents as possible before being KO'd themselves, like Endless mode, but the opponents now have extremely high handicaps, increased aggressiveness, and a high AI level. Additionally, a high knockback modifier is applied to the player and no items will appear. This is unarguably the most difficult Multi-Man mode, as the opponents are immensely harder to KO while the player is also much easier to KO compared to the other modes.
Super Smash Bros. Obliteration/Multi Man Obliteration
Target Obliteration[]
Smashing targets to gain unlockable characters, stages, features, etc has returned this time with more characters to choose from then ever before once again the goal of the game is to smash all 10 targets scattered throughout a special arena as quickly as possible, the game records the shortest time taken to smash all ten targets. If a character has never smashed all the targets, the game will also record how many targets were smashed in that time. There is also a total time that is kept that includes the cumulative time taken to clear every character's stage, which appears only after all characters have cleared their stage, If a player falls into the abyss once again as in previous games it automatically results in a game over, the score that is best attained by the player will appear on the characters image after Target Smash is beaten with the said character.
Super Smash Bros. Obliteration/Target Obliteration
Super Slugger Competition[]
Mr. Sandbag has returned to be smashed once again, the format is very similar to the Home Run Contest found in Melee Brawl and 3DS/Wii U, only with a single home run bat to make the final and only swing at the sandbag while launching it for many feet, the contest once again takes place in the Home Run Stadium, up to 50000 feet are found in the track, the highest prize attained by hitting up to 40000 of that distance.
Super Smash Bros. Obliteration/Super Slugger Competition
Trophy Rush[]
Trophy Rush has returned from the Ashes of Smash Bros. 4, and has been upgraded to around 200 seconds where players are able to obtain as may trophies as they can get their hands on, in Trophy Rush, the player selects any character they wish, then selects how long they wish to play the game. The minimum length of time is 30 seconds, though it can be increased by one second for every six Coins the player adds to the cost.
In the actual game, the player placed upon a thin platform that they can jump through, and grab the ledges on. They are tasked with destroying as many crates that fall onto the platform as possible. Two types of crates exist: standard wooden crates that are destroyed in one hit, and stone crates that require several hits to be destroyed. The geometry of these crates vary, and players can be pushed around by the crates depending on how stacks of them may fall.
A line above the mode's main platform indicates how high the crates are allowed to pile up, and if the crates breach this line for more than five seconds, then the platform disappears, forcing the player to be KOed. In addition to this danger, bombs with a five-second fuse can fall onto the stage, certain boxes will shoot fire from one side if not destroyed within 3.5 seconds, and if the player stays in one place for too long, a ball of lightning falls from the sky. In addition to dealing knockback and damage to the player's character, these obstacles can also destroy the various crates that fall. Getting KOed for any reason on any blast line causes a deduction of fifteen seconds of play time for the first KO, then ten seconds for the second KO, and finally five seconds on any subsequent KOs; the lost time can also potentially end a player's chain, slowing their progress down.
While destroying boxes, the player is able to build up a "chain", which is broken if they fail to destroy any boxes in a small period of time; the higher the chain, the more points are awarded for each box destroyed. Scoring points fills up a meter in the top left of the screen; when the meter is full, it triggers a Fever Rush, where pentagonal crates holding coins, trophies, and occasionally custom parts constantly fall onto the stage for seven seconds. These blocks are notable for being able to start chain reactions, destroying identical blocks next to them. Of note is that only the first Fever Rush is guaranateed to drop a Custom Part; subsesquent Fever Rushes will not necessarily dispense such rewards.
All Star Mode[]
Once all 100 characters (Minus the 5 DLC Characters) have been obtained by the player, the player character now has the arduous task of fighting through all 100 of them, with only 5 lives maximum and a few mixed recovery items there are once again the exact same 10 difficulties which are found in smash mode, as well as a limited amount of recovery items, (maximum tomato's heart container's, bonus fruit, etc), could the player survive the assault before they falter? The battles are usually set up by series with no more than four characters on the stage at once, and no more than 13 maximum fought in one round at once. The Player must fight and defeat all Main 94 out of 105 Characters in the game, except for the DLC and Custom Characters. Defeating all opponents at a time within a series/round will open a door that takes you to the lobby before another series round. DLC Characters will appear to battle the player as well, as long as they are downloaded.
Completing All Star Mode will win a trophy of the character based off the game that they debuted in.
Super Smash Bros. Obliteration/All Star Mode
Boss Battles[]
Boss Battles Mode has returned, and once again the goal is to defeat every boss in the game with a single stock. When a player begins Boss Battles Mode, they are immediately dropped into combat against one of the twelve bosses. Once a boss is defeated, the player is brought to the rest area. The rest area displays all defeated bosses as trophies, a screen that displays the face of next boss to be fought, and has three Heart Containers, which, like in All-Star Mode, recover the player's damage to 0% and do not reappear upon later visits to the rest area. This format continues until all bosses are defeated. Unlike the previous games the bosses are fought in sequential order and the mode can be completed regardless if you have completed smash mode or not. There are a total of twelve bosses to fight in Boss Battles Mode found throughout all across the various Nintendo Universes.
This format is mostly the same as All-Star Mode. However, the player is not allowed to continue after being KO'd and using up their stock, as it is a Stadium game. Boss Battles also includes a co-op mode (a mode that a player can get up to three additional players to help them with 1 player mode games), where both characters will have a single stock and there will be three extra Heart Containers for a total of six (If done on co-op mode, there are 12 Heart Containers instead of three.).All four players must remain alive; if all of the players lose their stock, the game ends.

Event Match Mode[]
As in Melee, Brawl, and 3DS/WII U, There are 60 of these special challenges in which lace the player into a scenario with special conditions and a certain objective. The player must complete the objective in order to complete the event match, and the game records the completion and "score" of each event match.
Each 10 sets of event matches 60 in total are determined by the characters per series that you have unlocked, once all 94 characters (minus the downloadable ones are unlocked), all 60 event matches are accessible to play for the characters, If a player loses stock or the match ends with an exceeded time limit, it is game over.
Super Smash Bros. Obliteration/Event Matches
Training Mode[]
Back from the dead of four years Training mode is once again available for players looking to hone their skills and practice before entering the fray to become legends, the format is set up more similar to that of Brawl where the format is not timed and players have an unlimited time to gather combo's and prectice till their heart's content for ample time, until restarting and leaving the mode.
As implied by its name, Training Mode is intended to allow players to practice using characters in a non-serious setting. All matches within the mode are actually Time matches of infinite length, as seen on the Jumbotrons featured in the Pokémon Stadium stages. The player can use any character they wish and select one CPU character as their opponent. Any stages available to the player can be used in the mode, including Smash 4's Omega Form stages.
Interestingly, Stale-Move Negation is not present in the mode for Brawl or SSB4. Additionally, in SSB4, the rage mechanic is ignored and pausing while in Training Mode will freeze the stage and all such elements, but not the characters or items.
Within Training mode, a specialised UI overlay, unavailable in any other mode, is displayed on the screen in order to show data relevant to gameplay. The overlay is always present in Smash 64, Melee, and Smash 4, but is disabled by default in Brawl.
The overlay contains information regarding:
Speed: Shows the speed at which the game is running. Not present in Smash 3DS.
Enemy: Shows the behaviour set by the player for any CPUs in play. Not present in Smash 4.
Damage: Displays amount of damage most recent attack inflicted by the player.
Combo/Consecutive Hits: Displays how many hits the player has attained on the opponent in one standard combo; this data is saved, with the longest combo done by each individual character being displayed on the character select screen for the mode. The counter in the overlay will top out at 999, though the mode can display higher combos on the character select screen. Named "combo" in SSB64 and 3Ds/Wii Uand named "consecutive hits" in Melee and Brawl.
Total Damage: Added in Melee, this displays how much damage the present combo has done on opponents. Like the Combo counter, it maxes out at 999.
Super Smash Bros. Obliteration/Training Mode

Multi-Player Modes[]

Coin Launcher = The Coin launcher, as the name implies, is a machine that uses coins as projectiles. Using the launcher, coins are shot at trophies to obtain them. The shooting button can be held down, and when released the coin will be launched much faster than usual. There are also various types of metallic drone-like enemies that can be shot; shooting an entire group earns stickers and bonuses. One bonus is a slight increase in spawn rate of rarer trophies. Another bonus is a certain amount of extra coins, that can range from 10 to 50. As the player destroys enemies, part of the green gauge below the player's coin supply fills up. When the gauge completely fills up, three trophies appear (although this does not always happen), and coins can be shot out at a significantly faster rate. Once a certain time has passed, the gauge empties. (This is called "Blast Away".) There are also periodic missiles that will deduct coins if they hit the lower section of the coin launcher, or give "bonus points" when destroyed. The missiles may also reduce the charge in the green gauge.
Vault = All of the Trophies, Stickers, and Music that you have obtained throughout the game is seen here, also there is a series of boxes of question marks per series, showing the player what is left to be unlocked.

Assist Trophies[]
Super Smash Bros Obliteration will aso feature up to 80 assist trophies which can be summoned from Assist Trophy Capsules and will assist the player or team by attacking other opponents in the arena, note assist trophies will now come not only from Nintendo franchise but third party games as well.
Items[]
124 items will be able to be used by the players or CPU opponents on the battlefield. These items can range from the following categories
Container items release other items once broken open, which can be done either by attacking them or by picking up and throwing them. In general, container items have a 12.5% (1 in 8) chance of exploding instead of releasing items.
Battering items are wielded by characters once picked up, turning their Neutral_attack neutral attack Forward_tilt forward tilt, dash attack and Forward_smash forward smash into an item swipe.
Shooting items fire projectiles when used, typically replacing the neutral attack and neutral aerial of the user. They all have limited ammunition and will merely shoot blanks once it runs out. Throwing items can only be thrown at opponents. Holding a throwing item means that a character cannot use most of their attacks, as pressing the attack button will simply throw the item.
Status items apply some sort of effect to the user, often beneficial but not necessarily. Some status items only need contact to be used (instead of needing to be grabbed). The ones that do need to be grabbed can be picked up even if the character is already holding an item; no such items exist in the original Super Smash Bros.
Recovery items decrease the damage of the user (or increase their HP in Stamina Obliteration.
Summoning items release an ally that fights along side you or your team when picked up.
Collectible items do not affect the match but instead are added to the player's collection once picked up. Computer players will not attempt to pick up collectible items, but if they do so accidentally they will not count.
Special items do not fit into the above categories.
