Plot[]

A NASA team discovers an alien planet with water and atmosphere like Earth. They send out a signal from their satellite. When the team returns to Earth, their spaceship gets destroyed by mysterious objects. The president orders a high alert to prepare for contact with the extraterrestrials. The main human character is introduced named Sargent Andrew Simmons. He and his team have returned from Afghanistan for the summer. Simmons' team consists of Rick Wilbert, Bobby, and Sue Allen. The team decide to go for a beer to celebrate their time off, but suddenly they spot a newscast on TV from CNN, reporting that what appears to be comets are entering Earth's atmosphere and the general orders them over to the New York military base.

General Earmonger explains that objects of the same meteor shower are heading in different locations across the globe. They've been spotted heading towards New York City, Boston, Moscow, Kenya, and Paris. They are ordered to prepare for anything.

Suddenly, the objects touch down in the ocean in New York City. One even makes impact with the Brookyln Bridge, destroying it. The objects come out of the water, transformed into alien tripods and Warships. The Aliens attack the city, killing everyone in their way. Simmons and his team are watching the news, and a news chopper is watching the carnage from the sky. An alien ship fires at them and blows up the helicopter.

Simmons , Rick, Bob, and Sue are sent into New York City, which has now become a warzone due to the alien attack and are ordered to plant a beacon to deploy a massive jet squad to enter the city. They fight their way to the Empire State Building and place the beacon on the spire, prompting the air force to arrive. But the aliens begin attacking the iconic landmark and the team escapes before the building comes crumbling to the ground.

The team finds out that citizens in Tokyo are being taken hostage by the aliens and forced to do slave labor for the aliens. Various members of the US army, including our heroes get sent to Japan to rescue the prisoners. After a long battle, the Japanese citizens are sent to sanctuaries where they will be safe from the aliens.

As the general is about to give orders for the team's next mission, they find Washington DC has come under attack by one of the alien motherships. The aliens capture the president and destroys the city. The alien commander, Zlargon, who is the only alien in the entire armada that has learned to speak human languages, explains to the president that they are attacking the planet because their population has grown too large. They have been conquering and destroying species on many different planets to support their increasing population. They found Earth, and they want to colonize it. Zlargon says to either surrender and they may let the species continue their lives as slaves, or refuse and have the entire human race wiped out.

The president says "I'd rather die, you fucking freak." Zlargon orders a nearby alien guard to kill the president. But, the Air Force is attacking the mothership. This gives the president the opprotunity to break free. He grabs an alien gun and fights his way to freedom.

Gameplay[]

The game is a sci-fi action third/first person shooter. You have the ability to switch from first-person to third-person, depending on your personal style of gameplay. You have the option of playing as humans to save the Earth, or play as the aliens and wipe out the human race to conquer Earth. There are a variety of vehicles for each faction. Alien Faction have stronger firepower and weapons, but are slower. Humans are faster, but have not as powerful weaponry. Each mission in an act features a series of objectives that are displayed on the heads-up-display, which marks the direction and distance towards and from such objectives

. Damage to the player is shown by the health bar. This happens in both alien and human. If you are getting shot a lot, get down to cover and you'll regenerate in a few seconds. Human mission objectives vary in their requirements, ranging from having the player arrive at a particular checkpoint, to eliminating enemies in a specified location, to standing their ground against enemy squadrons, manning mini-guns and other weapons, piloting jets, tanks, and other vehicles in battle against the aliens, and planting explosive charges on an enemy installation. The player is also accompanied by fellow soldiers who cannot be issued orders.

Space Invaders Gameplay

But Alien objectives also have you accompanied by alien soldiers. Their missions mostly consist of wiping out the human resistence in an area, destroying the human city within a time limit in the mothership, and getting to a certain area that can help you in your attempt to world domination. The environment is almost entirely destructible, but bullets cannot go through most walls. Only fighter jets, tanks, alien warships and alien walkers can destroy things. Because there is a major focus in making the battles look as realistic and life-like as possible, using a combination of the Clover Engine 3.0 and Frosbite 2. There are 14 environments in the game. Many of them cover urban streets, metropolitan downtown areas, and open landscapes suited to vehicle combat.

Reception[]

FGN[]

Various FGN critics reviewed Space Invaders, giving it mixed reviews. NepetaLast (tbc) gave it 2/5 stars, noting the unoriginal gameplay and the fact that the game was nothing like the original Space Invaders. NextGen Solo gave it a slightly more positive review 3/5, noting the effort that was quite obviously given to the making of the game, but critiquing the fact that it felt like most of Clover Entertainment's recent work, and claiming that the game felt like it wanted to be more than it was, but it isn't. Cobweb (tbc) gave it 1/5, and the review is as thus: "Yawn."
