CANON APPEARANCES

Unten is the mascot of Fantendo, created by its founder, Plumber (tbc). First appearing in Fissure, they are the main character of the TOSWALAUNTIDNWTR series and its reboots, Prodigy and The Bluebird Augury. Outside of their home series, Unten is one of Fantendo's most commonly used characters, and is important to the Fantendoverse.

Unten is a blue, anthropomorphic bear-like character called a Beorn. They were designed to combine Mario and Link's gameplay with Kirby's mysterious past, and Kirby and Pikachu's cute appearance. As Plumber created them as a character for everyone to use and relate to, Unten is genderqueer, although several iterations gender the character as masculine.

Unten is the adoptive son of Chief Dongorio, who resides in Peaceful Plains on the planet Zeon. They were considered an endling in early works without other Beorn characters. In the New Fantendoverse and Fantendoverse τ, they are instead one of the only Beorns to survive Zeon's destruction. Unten has been portrayed with various powers, such as latent electric abilities.

Appearance[]

Unten

Unten's original design

Originally, Plumber only designed Unten's head in Adobe Illustrator. Some early works took this literally, depicting Unten as a bodiless head. Another early design gave them a Yoshi body, which is retroactively called Dinosaur Unten.

As a Beorn, Unten resembles a bipedal bear with simplistic limbs. Their eyes have black scleras and white (or bright blue) pupils shaped like four-pointed stars. They have rounded blue ears with black canals (sometimes with three ridges inside each ear). A darker blue fur color fades from the ends of their hands and feet, and sometimes the bottom of their stomach. They are sometimes depicted with small claws that can pop out from under their fur.

Though not initially depicted with clothes, Unten has taken on multiple outfits over the series. He mainly covers his neck with a bandana, scarf, or cloak. In the Boundless Fantendoverse, Unten wears a black poncho with a shiny, light-blue metallic edge that changes color depending on the power they use. For example, when they turn into their Midas Form, the edge becomes golden.

Name[]

According to an interview with Plumber, Unten is a shortening of Untendo, another name considered for Fantendo.

Unten's culture is originally stated not to use surnames. In the New Fantendoverse, Unten chooses the last name Bluzen, but would take his spouse's last name. Fantendoverse τ gave him the surname Baraenion, after his adoptive tribe.

Unten's official name in Mandarin and Japanese is 運天. Its Mandarin pronounciation is ㄩㄣˋㄊㄧㄢ Yùntiān (Yun4tian1, IPA: /yn⁵¹tʰjɛn⁵⁵/). In Japanese, it is pronounced ウンテン Unten, and uses the same character テン ten as in Nintendo (任天堂).

Personality[]

Unten's characterization differs between appearances. In their original iteration, they are meant to be a silent hero. Unten starts their adventure with very few skills, but learns quickly. Despite having some strength and toughness due to their Beorn heritage, they have a candid personality.

Unten shows some heroic behavior, choosing to follow their own mission to save their planet and people in requesting peace among Zeon and the defeat of Doomulus Grime.

New Fantendoverse[]

Main article: Unten Bluzen

Continuing the goal of the Prodigy reboot, the New Fantendoverse develops a stronger personality for Unten. He is the universe's biggest hero by obligation, not choice. He deals with trauma about Zeon and other events for which he feels responsible. He has developed a martyr complex, and often plunges into voids to save everyone.

Unten's personal mission is to recover the Beorn race, despite even other Beorns seeming not to care. He is genuinely nice, respects his friends' decisions regardless of agreeing with them, and would rather reason with his enemies than fight. Unten follows visions from his dreams, even if they seem fairly silly.

History[]

Backstory[]

See also: Opening the Fissure

Unten's past is deliberately mysterious, inspired by Kirby. Attempts at establishing their origins before fighting Doomulus Grime are vague, obscure, or conflicting, leaving them unclear.

In Fantendo Origins and later Fissure! (June 2022), Unten is raised by the Treefolk Gnarled I and Rose Tree before Chief Dongorio adopts him into the Baraenion Tribe. Fantendo Origins sees Unten create the deities The Balance and The Internet, who retroactively describe themselves as the parents of The Fan and The Enemy. This may suggest that Unten's actions helped establish the Fantendoverse.

In Unten: Mistaken Time, Unten's biological father is a scientist who created Grime, and the Doomuli eventually turn him a robot. In the New Fantendoverse, Unten's biological father is Xaviel Bluzen, who has been converted into Doomulus Regime as of Fantendo - Doomed.

TOSWALAUNTIDNWTR[]

That One Series With a Long and Uninteresting Name That I Do Not Wish to Remember establishes that Unten may be the last of his kind, and is adopted by Chief Dongorio, leader of the Baraenion Tribe on the planet Zeon. After substantial training, Unten has become both athletically and mentally skilled.

In Fissure, Unten is separated from Dongorio and the tribe when Doomulus Nine's use of the GigaDrill suddenly opens a giant fissure that splits Zeon in half. Unten learns of Doomulus Nine's plot to drain and exploit Zeon's life, and that Nine is only one member of the Doomuli organization. In Fissure II: Underground, Unten navigates the formerly hidden underground societies of Zeon after the fissure reveals entrances to them. In the five Tragedy games, Unten goes to space to fight all nine Doomuli and free the other planets they control. In Liberation, Unten defeats the Doomuli leader Doomulus Prime, disbanding the Doomuli Organization and freeing the galaxy.

TOSWALAUNTIDNWTR follow-up projects[]

In the game Unten, Unten's ship crashes on the planet Tiktok. Unten has to save the planet from total destruction by defeating The Darkness.

In Unten: Mistaken Time, Unten searches for his biological father after defeating Doomulus Grime. She discovers that many other Beorns, including her father who has been converted into a robot, have survived inside a Doomuli Organization prison. Unten helps the other Beorns to break out of prison and later navigates a paradox timeline to defeat the Catalyst Doomulus Slice.

Fantendoverse[]

Unten plays a significant role in the original Fantendoverse.

In Fantendo Heroes UNITE!!!, Unten appears as King Plumber's silent companion. Later, he comes out of nowhere, stabs Querius in the chest, and sacrifices himself to stop the Void from enveloping and destroying Fantendo. Her attempt is unsuccessful and apparently fatal. Unten later appears in a "tornado of light" at the entrance to the Forest of Fan, where they bestow the Light Sword to Sam.

Despite his death, Unten inexplicably reappears in the sequel, Fantendo Heroes 2, possibly implied to actually be a clone of Sam created by Nightwolf. She assists Mr. D, Ludwig, and Luz to defeat the Beast unleashed by Querius.

In Fantendo - Playing War, a mysterious figure informs Unten that Zeon has been lost to a void of infinite blankness. One day, Unten faces his fear of returning by taking a spaceship to Zeon's former location. There, he meets and befriends a girl named Thorn who claims to be a survivor. Unten and Thorn return to help Strafe and others in the Wasteland, and Unten sends his emergency spaceship down so that the heroes can destroy Robo-Sunnyscythe V2. Afterwards, time freezes and a black hole forms in the ship, and The Fan's voice declares that a sacrifice must be made to save all universes. Unten and Thorn proclaim their love to each other and sacrifice themselves to the black hole together. The remaining heroes dedicate a hill to Unten when they return to their home universe.

Some time after the events of Playing War, Unten learns that Thorn is a siren and distances from her. Unten is presumed to be involved in The Recolor War during this time.

In Fantendo Visual Novel: Fracture, Unten appears in another dimension along with other heroes, including Leah Needlenam and Reese. Unten is briefly brainwashed by Abbadon but comes back to his senses after a short skirmish with the other heroes. Unten also learns about an impending cataclysm called the Shattering before returning to the Fantendoverse.

Prodigy[]

The Prodigy reboot series was published alongside the original Fantendoverse stories. It established a new backstory that does not match the unfinished original series, but was widely taken as standard until 2022.

UntenFissure2014

Fissure (2014)

In Fissure (2014), Unten has been on the run for years and meets Chief Dongorio, Zerita, and Mioda (then named Mondo) at their village. He learns that he is prophesied to defeat a great evil. Later, Unten fails the Narobi-Trons' mission to save Queen Pixella, but the disembodied queen saves him from execution. Unten teams up with Fanti and later Zerita to attack Grime Corp factories. Robotic clone UN10 abducts the Beorn to one of Grime Corp's main buildings. Unten watches Doomulus Grime torture and kill Chief Dongorio, then move onto Zerita. Briefly believing her dead, Unten attacks Grime with Fanti. Unten and Zerita defeat Grime but part ways on bad terms.

In Underground (2014), a year later, Unten and Zerita follow Grime underground. Unten is forced to win a gladiator tournament and beat champion Kaio. He then contends with Boare and Sia, who think they are the augured hero and turn Zerita and Fanti on Unten. After the former team is captured, Unten breaks out of a prison and gets Queen Pixella's reassurance. He then battles and teams up with Boare, Zerita, Fanti, Netnu (née Kaio), and Sia. After breaking into Grime Corp., Unten helps rescue hostages from execution, and kicks Doomulus Grime into a chasm that unobservedly leads to an ancient drill.

In Tragedy (2015), three years later, Unten's dreams foretell Zeon's destruction. Unten fends off a new robot, UNT3N, and his self-proclaimed "brother" Spunten, as an assassin stalks him. Over dinner the next day, Sia's parents blame Unten for Sia shirking responsibilities. After Doomulus Grime powers the planet drill, Unten reaches Grime's base, loses Fanti to defeat UNT3N, and defeats Grime one-on-one. Unten agonizes over a likely fatal chance to stop the drill, but instead flees like Grime. Unten fights off The Darkness with Mioda's help. He leaves Mioda behind at her behest, and sees the ground collapse under Zerita. Spunten boosts him into an escape pod, from which Unten watches Zeon's destruction and blames himself.

The Shattering[]

UntenShattering

Fantendo Smash Bros. Shattered

In Fantendo Smash Bros. Shattered, Unten has unconsciously used Catalyst powers to change his past failure to save Zeon in the Prodigy series. This leaves a massive Fracture in the Fantendoverse timeline, and gives Unten an identity crisis. She eventually understands that the prophecy referred to defeating Clockwarx, and leads an army of Fantendo characters to destroy him during the Shattering.

Fantendo - Onward

In Fantendo - Onward, Unten washes up on a mysterious beach on his birthday with little memory of prior events. They reunite with other Fantendo characters, all of whom are confused about where they are, and attempt to console them. Unten later learns from the Mysterious Ms. ? that they are temporarily in a purgatorial "half-universe" waiting to transition into the New Fantendoverse after the Shattering. Unten believes that a monster on the beach working for The Threat may be holding them back from transitioning into the new universe, and attempts to defeat this monster by fusing with Zerita into a form known as Zerunten. Afterwards, Unten and Zerita say their goodbyes and prepare to do their lives over again in the New Fantendoverse.

New Fantendoverse[]

UntenMysteryProject

Fantendo Smash Bros. Victory

As of Fantendo - Genesis, Unten lacks Catalyst abilities and never fulfills the prophecy. After the events of the Prodigy series recur in the New Fantendoverse, Unten lands on Earth. The FBI captures him and sends him after The Threat's underling, Six. Rachel Harel helps Unten escape. In Fantendo Now, Unten goes on missions for The Fan and The Enemy, and trains Six, who renames to Quartz.

Unten learns in Fantendo Smash Bros. Victory that The Fan and The Enemy created the New Fantendoverse in The Threat's domain, as well as the Doomuli to protect themselves from Beorns' Descension ability. Unten Descends The Threat, The Fan, and The Enemy, ending their war.

Fantendoverse τ[]

Unten Tau

The Bluebird Augury

Fantendoverse τ, and its reboot trilogy, The Bluebird Augury, intended for Unten Baraenion to live in the wilderness of a tropical, diverse Zeon. He is still be an orphan and reluctant hero, but has stronger roots with his tribe of humans. They prophesy Unten to defeat Doomulus Grime and save the planet. Unten finds allies in Zerita, Abbaye, Mioda, Queen Pixella, Fanti, Mynis, Ivan, and Boare. He defeats foes such as UN10, and his nemesis Kaio, who views Unten as a fraud and dangerous false hope. Unten steals Imperium from Doomulus Grime.

This iteration of Unten also declines the chance to sacrifice his life to stop the drill. He escapes on a rare Zeonian ship as one of six surviving Beorns, and less than fifty Zeonians total. Zerita's death especially scars him. Despite failing the prophecy, Unten becomes a more nomadic hero, helping troubled populations throughout the cosmos. He is too anxious from the loss of Zeon to settle down in a new home.

Fantendo renaissance[]

In 2022, Fantendo's fifteenth anniversary ushered in a renaissance and renewed interest in Unten's series. As community members researched depictions of Unten prior to the New Fantendoverse, Plumber returned and revealed undisclosed information about their creative vision, inspiring new reboots.

Fissure[]

In Fissure (2022), Unten matches the chosen one from the Beorns' and Catoneans' legend of the Augury. He starts out inexperienced at fighting, but is tough and learns fast. In the first chapter, Unten tries to bring down a new factory construction site with Zerita and, his adopted brother, Miodo but doing so the three lead by mistake Doomulus Grime to their secret tribe.

His whole tribe is captured by Grime's robot army and Unten finds himself alone with a Narobi, Fanti, that follows him and helps him in his adventure. In the second chapter, Unten decides to follow Boare because he seems like a powerful ally in his quest to free his tribe and defeat Doomulus Grime. Together, they dismantle a prisoner camp but Unten's tribe is not there, they even seem like to have been freed before Unten's arrival. Destroying the prisoner camp is revealing to be the biggest defeat Doomulus Grime ever had since he took control of their world. Unten quickly becomes a symbol of hope, which also bring new ennemy, among them a mute red beorn who dedicated his life to kill the Augury.

Fissure![]

UntenFissure!

Fissure!

In Act I of Fissure! (June 2022), a young Unten wanders into the Dystoria Forest, and Rose Tree and Old Man Gnarled care for him. When underground tremors make it difficult to survive, the Treefolk send Unten to Peaceful Plains in Nukingdom, where Chief Dongorio adopts her. The tremors eventually reach the plains. Unten goes on a mission to enter the Baraenion tribe into the Nukingdom Alliance and protect Zeon from the tremors. Despite bearing the weight of political resolution on his shoulders, Unten is willing to help those in need.

Powers and abilities[]

UntenDoomedPainted

Unten wielding Imperium in Fantendo - Doomed

Unten's abilities were initially somewhat vague. They were assumed to have good fighting abilities, but not necessarily any actual powers. Plumber intended Unten to jump like Mario and throw punches like Goron Link. Later appearances give Unten latent electrical abilities, which Fanti can harness.

Unten is proficient in various weapons depending on the source. They wield the Light Sword in Fantendo Heroes UNITE!!!, before conferring it to Sam; a crossbow in Unten: The Final Strike; and the sentient blade Imperium starting in Beorn Hallow. Imperium also grants Unten the ability to communicate with The Silent One and obtain her knowledge.

Innate abilities[]

Beorn sense
In Unten: The Final Strike, Unten has a Beorn sense, comparable to Spider-Man's Spider-Sense.
Elemental orb and mineral absorption
In an interview, Plumber stated that Unten would be "very powerful for a short amount of time" if they absorbed Zeta Metal-Alpha. In the Unten Reborn series, Unten can absorb elemental orbs by defeating enemies, and amplify his physical attacks with their elements.
UntenTragedy

Unten and Fanti in Tragedy (2015)

Electrical abilities
Unten is increasingly depicted with weak electrical abilities, able to channel lightning out of their fists if they have enough energy. When teamed up with Fanti or using Blump fruits, power supply is no longer an issue. By combining their power, Unten and Fanti can execute more advanced abilities like hyper-speed or electrokinesis.
Catalyst
In Fantendo Smash Bros. Shattered, Unten is a Catalyst, a character with the power to create and travel between timelines at the expense of starting a Fracture. Due to Unten's trauma from the Prodigy series, his mind begins to warp the past and create thousands of different timelines where Zeon's future is different. This also sent some characters to the Wasteland. In the New Fantendoverse, his Catalyst powers separated into Tennu.
Descension
As of Fantendo - Genesis, Unten can use Descension, the power to strip deities of their status and powers. According to Fantendo Smash Bros. Victory, he can only use it once, and does so to Descend three deities simultaneously.
Healing and resurrection
Unten's blood has been used to heal characters and revive them after a mortal wound, like Fenne.
Dream vision
Unten sometimes receives visions from the future through his dreams. At one point, they can communicate with other characters through their dreams, mainly Boare.

Transformations[]

Originally planned forms
Unten's base form was planned to be like Goron Link. He would have had transformations that made him skinnier (like Waluigi or Lanky Kong), smaller (like Diddy Kong, Young Link, or Deku Link), and, as a reward for completing all sidequests, stronger (like Fierce Deity Link).
EOT Unten Midas

Midas Unten by Coral0excess (tbc)

Midas Unten
In one of Unten's earliest powers, when they eat a Glistening Blump fruit, they become Midas Unten. In this form, their body turns golden, and they can transmute everything they touch into gold.
Zerunten
In Fantendo - Onward, Unten is able to fuse her body with Zerita into a being called "Zerunten" by sharing an unnamed fruit native to the half-universe that they briefly existed in following the Shattering.
Hyper Form and Nega Form
In the New Fantendoverse, Unten can use Hyper Mode Orbs to achieve Hyper Form. The addictive power influences Unten to succumb to more primal tendencies. With overuse, the orb grows a black blemish and activates Nega Mode. Nega Form Unten appears frightened, and he loses all methods of attack but his claws.

Relationships[]

Zerita[]

While the community mainly views Zerita as Unten's sidekick, their exact relationship varies between portrayals. Since Prodigy, they are typically close friends but have strained and distant patches. Zerita's doubt or resentment of Unten can lead her to abandon them. In works where Zeon is destroyed and Unten believes Zerita to be dead, they have reached a strong mutual respect, and it strongly contributes to Unten's guilt over being unable to save the planet.

Fanti[]

Fanti is one of Unten's closest friends, both emotionally and physically. In Fissure (2014), he meets Unten just after the Narobi-Trons cast Fanti out of the kingdom. He uses his powers to amplify Unten's own. Still, in Underground (2014), he briefly abandons Unten to team up with Boare. In Tragedy (2015), Fanti sacrifices himself to destroy UNT3N so that the real Unten can reach Doomulus Grime.

Doomulus Grime[]

Doomulus Grime is Unten's main antagonist in most iterations of the series. Grime considers Unten unworthy of being his foe, and is infuriated that they have become a thorn in his side. In Fantendo - Genesis, Unten is haunted by the prospect of Doomulus Grime's return, despite believing Grime is dead. However, works such as Fantendo Smash Bros. Shattered force Unten and Doomulus Grime to begrudgingly team up, and suggest a more self-effacing side to Grime's villain complex against Unten.

Mondo / Mioda[]

In Prodigy, Mioda initially bitterly envies Unten for capturing her father and adopted sister's attention, and for being seen as a hero. After taking to space to seek her purpose in life, Mioda matures and accepts Unten as a hero Zeon needed.

Chief Dongorio[]

Chief Dongorio is generally portrayed as Unten's adoptive and current father. They have a healthy bond and are willing to fight for each other.

Thorn[]

In Fantendo - Playing War, Unten first meets Thorn at Zeon's remains, where she is looking for her father. The two fall in love and sacrifice themselves to the Void. During their time in the Void, Thorn reveals herself to be a Siren, using spells to make Unten fall in love with her to eventually kill him later in a secluded area. Unten manages to escape. In Fantendo Smash Bros. Shattered, they are still on rocky ground yet can work together within a team.

Denos[]

Denos was aware of Unten's role in the prophecy. After Zeon explodes, he gathers what information he can on Unten. His memory is unaffected whenever Unten changes the past, but locating Unten is difficult until he finds the Fracture and keeps searching for the truth. They meet in Fantendo Smash Bros. Shattered, where Denos explains his vast knowledge on Unten's identity and purpose. Denos keeps following Unten in the New Fantendoverse.

Leah Needlenam[]

While Leah Needlenam sees Unten as a rival doesn't support his leadership, they must often team up against greater foes like Abaddon and Gagmier. Unten considers Leah a friend despite her countless betrayals.

Rachel Harel[]

Unten and Rachel Harel slowly become friends after she finds him in Fantendo - Genesis. Unten is implied to have feelings for her, which she has not picked up on.
