Super Mario Maker Ultimate is a sequel to Super Mario Maker 2 released for the Nintendo Switch Ultimate. It will be released on September 20th, 2022.

Differences Between Super Mario Maker 2[]

Editor[]

  • The editor music is now the bonus theme from Vs Super Mario Bros.
  • Up to 4 subareas (with 1 main level making it 5) can be used in a level.
    • Subareas can also change style when going into it, so a level can be many styles.
  • There are 24 slots instead of 12. The 12 is on top, and 12 is at the bottom.
  • The characters have abilities now, just like SMB2, NSLU and SM3DW.
  • All the Night effects are now Sunset effects, while different Night Effects take it's place.
    • Some, like Underwater, keep the original Night Effect in it's place, while a new Sunset effect takes it's place.
  • You can also place any Liquid, just like in the Super Mario Maker stage from the later Super Smash Bros. games.
    • Liquid types are: Water, Lava, Quicksand and Poison.
    • Quicksand is now an option.
  • Turning off rising liquids built into the theme by switching it on or off.
  • The sky theme got renamed to Athletic.
  • Enemies can now be stacked in the 3D World theme.
  • All the Story Mode exclusive items are now placeable.
  • ? blocks are renamed to Lucky Blocks.
  • Fuse Themes is a new option to combine themes (like a castle underwater theme).

World Maker[]

  • Up to 8 levels, 4 pipes, 2 castle levels, make up to 10 worlds, and upload up to 10 worlds.
    • There are new world options, too.
  • Instead of just having a Super Mario World style, more styles were added.
  • Custom names are allowed instead of just "Super [person] World".
  • The world is now 10x10 instead of 6x4.
  • Space has been split into 4 themes: Star (using the space icon), Mushroom, Flower and Special.

Bots[]

  • You can now make 928 levels and upload 800 (in Worlds or Playlists) + 128 levels (individually).

Default[]

  • 10 and 100 Mario Challenge came back along with the Super Mario Challenge (from the 3DS version of the Wii U game).
    • The 10 and 100 Mario Challenge is now the Player Challenge and has 1-100 challenges from random levels made by Nintendo.
  • The Unlocking Method returned, though it's different from the Wii U and 3DS versions of the 1st game. Some of the methods like Gnat Attack return from the first game.
    • The game starts with everything from Super Mario Maker 2, though many things that's new to the game has to be unlocked.

Gameplay[]

Menu[]

The menu plays when you start the game. In a similar fashion to Mario Paint, Super Mario 64, and Super Mario Maker 2, the title screen is highly interactive. A randomly generated stage will appear, and players have the option to choose "Create" to choose either makers, or "Play", to choose either Course World, either bots, or Super Player Challenge. Players can even complete the stage before starting. When pressed, each letter will cause a different effect on the game title screen.

Game Styles[]

Name Description Extra? Unlocked
Super Mario Bros. Logo The game that started it all, Super Mario Bros. is pretty barebones in terms of gameplay mechanics. Mario's only abilities here are running and jumping, although such simplicity may be useful, depending on what type of course you're making. no Start of Game
Super Mario Bros. 2 logo DSSB The first Extra Game Style, Super Mario Bros. 2 is definitely the middle ground between the Game Styles. Despite the player having a distinct small form, the style also features a unique health mechanic, where the player starts with two hearts and can get more using Mushrooms. Every item restores one health, so the only constant is that the player is small at one heart. In addition, the player can ride on certain enemies, carry them over their head, and perform a Charge Jump. This game introduced some mainstays like Birdo and Shy Guy. yes Beat 10 Mario Challenge
Super Mario Bros. 3 Logo Super Mario Bros. 3 is home to some of the mechanics that became Mario staples, such as carrying items. As well, several iconic Mario items and enemies originated here. no Start of Game
Super Mario Land 2 Logo Basically a console Mario game on Game Boy, Super Mario Land 2 was the game that introduced the world to Wario. This Game Style plays similarly to Super Mario World, but without the upwards throw. As well, various locales from the original Super Mario Land make an appearance. yes Beat World 1 of Super Mario Challenge
Super Mario World Logo A further expansion on the Mario formula, Super Mario World features mechanics such as the Spin Jump and the ability to kick held items directly upwards, the latter of which never really returned. no Start of Game

Super Mario 64 logo DSSB TBA yes TBA
Super Mario Sunshine logo DSSB TBA yes TBA
Super Mario Galaxy Logo TBA yes TBA
New Super Mario Bros U logo DSSB TBA no Start of Game
Super Paper Mario Logo Despite being mechanically based on Super Paper Mario, the Paper Mario style borrows locales from every installment, from the original all the way through Origami King! In this style, Mario is able to Ground Pound and swing his mighty hammer. Health in this style works on a 10-point system, with some attacks being able to deal multiple points of damage. yes Beat World 5 of Super Mario Challenge
Super Mario 3D World logo Super Mario 3D World is definitely the most standard of the Extra Game Styles, featuring the form mechanic of the main styles. Due to its nature as a 3D game, 3D World has several new abilities that are unavailable in the other Game Styles, such as a Long Jump and Spinning Jump, as well as Super Mario Bros. 2's Charge Jump. In addition, the player can build courses on two separate planes. yes Start of Game
Super Mario Odyssey Logo DSSB The newest installment in the Super Mario series, Super Mario Odyssey is home to some of the most unique techniques, such as Mario being able to use Cappy to not only get an extra mid-air jump, but also Capture certain enemies to use their abilities. Because of this, the game lacks most of a power-up system in the traditional sense. In this style, Mario has the health mechanic from Super Mario Galaxy, and courses can be built on two planes. yes Beat World 7 of Super Mario Challenge
