F-Zero: Maximum Velocity 2 is a futuristic racing video game and the sequel to F-Zero: Maximum Velocity. It was developed by Sega and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 3DS. It will be released on August 17, 2020 worldwide.

Gameplay

Players choose a pilot and then a cup. Each cup contains five tracks which consist of three laps each track. At the end of the first lap, players are given a boost. The boost increases their speed, making it difficult to turn, but also depletes their energy. Energy can be restored on energy pads that are on the track. The player will have to restart the track if they fall off of the track or get damaged after running out of energy. Once they run out of lives, they are taken back to the main menu screen.

Pilots

Returning Pilots

F-Zero: Maximum Velocity 2 takes place two years after its predecessor, meaning it takes place twenty-seven years after the previous titles. This makes it the second game to not feature Captain Falcon, Dr. Stewart, Pico, and Samurai Goroh as playable pilots. However, several of the characters are either related to or the successors of the original pilots. There are fifty-two playable pilots in total. All ten pilots from F-Zero: Maximum Velocity return in this game. There are forty new playable pilots in the base game. There is one DLC pilot that comes with the free Star Fox DLC pack. And the player can make their own Mii into a pilot.

Like Pilots, this game does not feature any tracks from original titles except for Fire Field Tracks. There are a total of nine cups. Three are unlocked at the start, with the other five needing to be unlocked. There is one cup that comes with the free Star Fox DLC pack.

Game Modes

Grand Prix

Grand Prix is the main game mode of F-Zero: Maximum Velocity 2. Players pick either Novice, Standard, Expert, and Master difficulty. The Master difficulty has to be unlocked. Players then choose a pilot and a cup. Players race on five tracks, with three laps on each. Whoever has the most points at the end of the cup is the winner.

Practice

Practice is the best mode for beginners. It lets players test their skills on a track. The player can choose from one to twenty to an endless amount of laps, anywhere between one and twenty-nine CPUS, and difficulty if CPUS are turned on.

Customize

Customize lets the player create their own tracks, machines, and Mii pilot. It also has a shop where the players can buy pilots and story mode chapters that are unlocked.

VS. Battle

VS. Battle is the multiplayer mode of the game. The player can play with three others that are nearby with a Wi-Fi connection. When online, up to twenty-nine others can play.

Story Mode

Self-explanatory. The story mode of F-Zero: Maximum Velocity 2 where the player takes control of Megan.

Options

Also self-explanatory. Options let the player set the controls up however they want as well as adjust sound and music. It also gives the player the option to delete their saved file.

Time Trials

Similarly to Mario Kart, Time Trials has the player race on a track, gives them the option to save their record as a ghost, then lets the player race against their own ghost to test their skill.

Replay

Replay contains all the unlocked cutscenes in the game as well as races that were saved and recorded.

Pilot Profiles

Contains information and a bit of background for every pilot that's currently unlocked. Each pilot even has their own theme song.
