Scuttle Bugs (also spelled Scuttlebugs) are round striped spider-like bugs that have appeared as semi-recurring enemies in the Mario series. It is not to be confused with the enemies Skeeter, Pider, and Arantula.

Their debut appearance, Super Mario 64, was also their only appearance in a 3D Mario game. They've been seen in 2D Mario games ever since. In SM64, they were Goomba clones, but in their later appearances, they act more like spiders.

Fanon appearances[]

Super Mario 3DS World[]

Scuttlebugs appear here. They also have a subspecies called Scuttlepions.

Mario & Luigi: Sage Quest[]

Scuttlebugs appear in Mario & Luigi: Sage Quest, found in Plumdrop Rainforest and battled alongside Snifits, Poison Bloopers, Spear Guys, and Fuzzies. They attack by creating a strand of web, attaching it from the top of the screen, and swinging on it towards one of the bros. They also attack by ensnaring a bros' feet with web and tackling them afterwards.

St. Clair Publications[]

  • Scuttle Bugs appear in Koopa Troopa (2013 game), but only as a background element, primarily in Big Boo's Haunted Citadel.
  • Scuttle Bugs appear in Super Mario Sunshine Deluxe, replacing the Klambers that appeared in the original game. To that effect, they appear on grates and are somewhat hard kills without Yoshi. As a plumber, you must Ground Pound or punch the side of the grate opposite to them.

New Super Mario Bros.: Revenge of the Bros.[]

Scuttlebugs reappear in New Super Mario Bros.: Revenge of the Bros.. In this game, they can commonly be found in World 3, Plus World 1, Plus World 3, as well as the various caves found throughout the game. Scuttlebugs have two methods of attack, the first one involves them hanging from their web and dangling in place while the latter involves them dropping down from their web and charging at the heroes upon sight (the former appears more in the earlier levels while the latter appears further in the game). Scuttlebugs can be beaten with any attack. In this game, the Scuttlebugs return to their pre-2012 appearance which was first seen in Super Mario 64 DS (yellow with black stripes, tiny fangs, and red cupped feet).

Mario Kart 9 (DandidooTheXD)[]

Scuttlebugs appear in Mario Kart 9, appearing in the course Koopa Ravine, and the cave section of N64 DK's Jungle Parkway. They hang from webs that are in the track. Driving into one will cause the player to spin out.
