The Pixls are a species that help Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Bowser in Super Paper Mario. Serving as a replacement for the partners system in previous Paper Mario games, the Pixls help the heroes by granting them special abilities, such as picking up items or setting off explosions. With the exception of Tippi and Tipton, the player can only have one Pixl in play at a time.

Super Paper Mario[]
3000 years before the events of the game, a powerful magician among the Ancients created the first 12 Pixls, doing so by transferring a spirit into a vessel that was created for a specific purpose. It is theorized that these spirits were taken from people after they had passed, which is supported by how Merlon was able to contain Tippi's human soul in a Pixl form. Following the magician's death, his apprentices learned how to make many more Pixls, and the Ancients became quite reliant on them. With their new helpers, the tribe prospered like never before.
However, 1000 years later, a large Pixl that named herself the Pixl Queen appeared. Most Pixls, as mentioned, were contained spirits inside vessels, though the Pixl Queen was said to be a demonic spirit within a Pixl body. While her exact intentions were unknown, one theory is that she was horrified by how the Pixls were used by the Ancients, and the Pixl Queen used her powers to make them rebel against their masters. Since they lost the Pixls they were so dependent on, the Ancients were unable to rebuild and rule their empire, and the Pixl Queen easily enslaved them.
In the midst of the ruin, descendants of the magician's apprentices and remnants of the 12 original Pixls joined forces to defeat wave after wave of Pixl minions. They used Catch Cards to capture and heal the Pixls, as well as free their fellow Ancients. In the end, only one of them managed to make it to the Pixl Queen's castle, though she bombarded him with horrific illusions. However, one Pixl that stood by the warrior's side had the ability to see the truth, and together they killed the Pixl Queen at the cost of the Pixl's life.
After her defeat, it was revealed that the Pixl Queen was really the daughter of the magician, whose soul was made into the first Pixl ever created, predating the Original 12, with knowledge taken from the Dark Prognosticus. The survivor of the battle against the Pixl Queen took the Dark Prognosticus and disappeared, and would later found the Tribe of Darkness. This tribe would be known as the thieves of the Dark Prognosticus, using it for their own selfish deeds, when in reality they were protecting it from being used for evil purposes (which in the end would turn out to be misguided when Count Bleck stole it).
Despite securing the Dark Prognosticus, the Tribe of Darkness grew wary of Pixls, and outlawed their creation. The Ancients and their Pixls would later disappear, for their technology was lost after being enslaved by the Pixl Queen. Only the remaining 11 of the Original 12 Pixls were believed to still be in existence, scattered among the various dimensions. These Pixls would go on to join Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Bowser on their adventure to stop Count Bleck from destroying all worlds. It is these Pixls would be joined by a twelfth, newly-created Pixl named Tippi, who would be replaced by her robotic duplicate Tiptron.

Tippi was once a lost human, named Timpani, wandering around the dimensions aimlessly after her memory was wiped. Before she died, Merlon would take her soul and place it in a Pixl body. She is the first Pixl to join Mario on his adventure, and is the only one (aside from Tipton) to be in play at all times. She can use Tattle to give information on various enemies, items, and locations. At the end of the game, she marries her long lost love Count Bleck (formerly Blumiere), regains her human form, and disappears with him. | ||

Thoreau is the second Pixl that Mario recruits, found in Mount Lineland. Tippi describes him as "sounds posh and upper class, but not afraid to get his hands dirty". As his vague hand-like design suggests, he can be thrown forward, and he will pick up enemies and objects. The player can then throw them, defeating other enemies or hitting switches out of reach. Boomer is the third Pixl that Mario and Peach recruit, found in Gloam Valley. His ability is that he can transform into a bomb, which will explode after a few seconds. The explosion can defeat enemies, as well as break open cracks in walls to reveal new passageways. | ||

Slim is the fourth Pixl that Mario and Peach recruit, found in Merlee's Mansion. His ability is to make the heroes paper-thin, similar to the Paper Mode curse in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. This can be used to dodge obstacles and enemies, though only when the player is standing still. | ||

Thudley is the fifth Pixl that Mario, Peach, and Bowser recruit, found in the Tile Pool. His ability is to let the player perform a Ground Pound, which deals heavy damage to enemies below, as well as break blocks and push down wooden pillars. | ||

Carrie is the sixth Pixl that Mario, Peach, and Bowser recruit, found in Fort Francis. Francis had at some point captured her and locked her in a cage in his basement, and joins the heroes when she's freed. Her ability is to turn into a platform that the heroes can ride on, which not only lets them travel faster, but also travel over spikes and jump on spiked enemies. | ||

Fleep is the seventh Pixl that Mario, Peach, and Bowser recruit, found on Planet Blobule. He if found occupying an outhouse, which Squirps really needs to use. He has presumably been there for years because he didn't have any toilet paper. After the heroes retrieve him some, he comes out of the outhouse and lets Squirps use it, and joins the heroes. His ability is to flip a part of the screen, which can stun enemies and reveal secret items and passageways. | ||

Cudge is the eighth Pixl that Mario, Peach, and Bowser recruit, found in the Gap of Crag. His ability is to let the heroes use a hammer, which can damage enemies and break blocks to reveal new passageways. | ||

Dottie is the ninth Pixl that Mario, Peach, and Bowser recruit, found in the Floro Caverns. She helped a Cragon named Gabbro escape from the Floro Sapiens. Dottie used to be his partner, but joins with the heroes instead, saying she was meant to be with them all along. Her ability is to turn the heroes tiny, which allows them to enter new passageways that otherwise couldn't be used. | ||

Barry is an optional Pixl that Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Bowser recruit, found in the Bitlands. He is first seen when Francis steals Tippi, where he tells the heroes the path to Fort Francis, where he is presumably keeping her. If talked to again after rescuing Tippi, he will join the heroes. His ability is to create a spiked barrier around the heroes, which damages nearby enemies and reflects projectiles. | ||

Piccolo is an optional Pixl that Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Bowser recruit, found in Flopside. She is locked behind an old, unused shack, and the heroes must go to various people in a wild goose chase in order to get a key to unlock the shack and free Piccolo. Her ability is to replenish the heroes, freeing them of any status ailments. Additionally, when she is in play, jumping, stomping on enemies, and Bowser's fore breath will play sound effects from Super Mario Bros.. | ||

Dashell is an optional Pixl that Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Bowser recruit, who joins the heroes after they beat the Flipside Pit of 100 Trials. Her ability is to allow the heroes to run twice as fast. | ||

Tiptron is a robotic clone of Tippi created by Francis after the game is complete. Francis can sell Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Bowser Tiptron for 999 Coins, and she will join the party afterwards. Following this, Francis says he plans to make a Tiptron Mk. II. Tiptron is functionally identical to Tippi, who disappeared with Count Bleck after the events of the game. | ||

- In a bribe, Mimi mentions a likely fake Pixl named Breadward, said to be made of oats and lard.
- Kersti and Huey are theorized to be Pixls as well (alebit rendered with a different artstyle), due to their simplistic designs, small, oval eyes, tendencies to float, and the unique abilities they grant and purposes they serve. Kersti specifically is referred to as a "sticker fairy", similar to the original and Japanese designation of "Fairen" for other Pixls.
- The beta ladder Pixl is thought to have allowed its user to Flip, an ability bestowed directly onto Mario in Super Paper Mario's final version. It is also possible that it was an early form of Carrie, due to the shared box-like design and whistle-like wing shape and placement.
