Story[]

Princess Peach invites Mario to come to her castle and have a cake she baked for them. When Mario arrives in Toad Town downtown, a group of worried Toads inform Mario about the kidnapping of Peach by Bowser and Bowser Jr.. They also tell Mario that the Koopas stole every single Power Star in the castle and hid them in different lands. A Lakitu appears and helps Mario by giving hints for him and recording his adventure.

Mario tries to get on the city, but the gate is locked. Mario looks for a key on the place and finds it in a Question Block. Mario gets on Toad Town and finds a letter in the ground. It seems to be from Bowser and says that he kidnapped Peach and he is keeping her in a place Mario will never find. There are two pictures attached in the letter: one shows Peach in a cage with Power Stars being guarded by Bowser and the other one shows Luigi and three Toads in a place similar to Peach's Castle. A Toad gives Mario a single Power Star that he hid from Bowser and Mario uses it to open a room to a world called Spike Meadows.

Mario finds more and more Power Stars scattered through the worlds, until he collects 100 of them, so he can finally find Bowser in Peach's castle. After passing his hardest obstacle course, the plumber jumps into a Warp Pipe and battles the king of the Koopas.

Upon defeat, Bowser leaves behind a giant and shiny Power Star and Princess Peach. Mario and Peach grabs the star and flies with it back to the Castle. There, the star goes to the stained glass window, as Mario, Peach and some Toads watch.

If Mario collects every Star Coin in the game, the cannon on the Castle's yard is unlocked and gets Mario to the rooftop. There, he finds three Toads — who give him 100 extra lives — and Luigi, who is now playable.

Gameplay[]

Controls[]

Super Mario Planet controls are similar to Super Mario Galaxy's, but some things were changed. The player uses the A button to jump, B to dash and move with the Control Stick. If the Wii Remote or the Nunchuck is shaken, Mario spins (however, in a similar fashion to New Super Mario Bros. Wii).

In addition to the control options, the player can use the D-Pad to move the camera and C to restore the original position. With 1 or 2, Lakitu appears in the right side of the screen and gives a tip about what Mario must do (similar to F.L.U.D.D. in Super Mario Sunshine).

Levels[]

The game features Toad Town as the main hub and Peach's Castle, as a secondary hub to secret courses and the challenge room that are unlocked with Star Coins. Three star coins are found in each level, sometimes located in hard places to reach and Warp Pipe areas or Coin Heavens. In Toad Town, the levels are found in different locations (such as a small ghost house to reach King Boo's Mansion or a giant beanstalk to reach Fuzzy Castle). There are also many shops scattered through the city. Mario can buy 1-Up Mushrooms, items or full his health meter in these shops.

There are fifty main worlds, each one containing six missions that has Power Stars as goal. If the player collects 90 Power Stars, the other uncompleted missions turn into optional, since only 90 are required to fight Bowser.
