Yoshis (T. yoshisaur munchakoopas) are a species in the Mario franchise, endemic to various places such as Yoshi's Island and Lavalava Island. They have been called dinosaurs, dragons, and turtles. As with Toads, the main Yoshi character shares his name with the species.
Yoshis are omnivorous and best known for their digestive abilities. They have long, sticky tongues that they use to catch prey from afar. They can swallow various fruits and enemies whole. After doing so, they may lay Yoshi Eggs, which they can throw as projectiles or hide inside as defense. The egg is sometimes said to encase whatever they ate.
In the Yoshi series, Yoshis are often troubled by Baby Bowser and Kamek.
Biology[]
A Yoshi's dominating feature is its nose, taking up most of its head. They are very sensitive when smelling out fruit or secrets that could be buried underground. They probably locate family and friends by smell, along with skin color. Even though they have teeth, these are rarely seen or used. The Fighting Polygons version of a Yoshi shows three pointy teeth, even though in the game Yoshi didn't show teeth.
The proportions of Yoshis' design have changed over time between games. They were initially somewhat large with long necks and tails, droopy eyelids, and differently shaped noses. In the Nintendo GameCube era, they were remodeled stouter, with a more upright stance and a nearly spherical nose, most closely resembling the Baby Yoshi designs from Yoshi's Story. This design persisted for the following decades. As of the Nintendo Switch era, some new 2D art for Yoshis has returned to elements of the original design. The proportions for their 3D model in Super Mario Bros. Wonder have also been tweaked in this direction.
When Yoshis die, they become Ghoshis.
Yoshi Clans[]
Dinosaur Land Yoshis[]
This is where Mario first met the Yoshis in Super Mario World and where he met the Yoshi. These Yoshis seem to be an anarchy with no leader or form of power, they just live in peace on the island with the various inhabitants, aside from some like the ravens who attack them. These Yoshis seem to worship a happy tree.
Yo'ster Island Yoshis[]
These Yoshis are on an island in the southwestern area of the Mushroom Kingdom. An arrogant and tough Yoshi called Boshi acts like he's their leader after winning a race, something the Yoshis here are quite into.
Lavalava Island Yoshis[]
These Yoshis are on a distant island which humans used to inhabit. They live here at peace with the Ravens and have a leader, Village Leader and they respect the island's leader Raphael the Raven as well. They do not get along with the Jungle Guys or Fuzzies. However they are not at all volatile.
Varieties[]
Colors Varieties[]
Yoshis come in a variety of colors, they include Green, Red, Blue, Light Blue, Pink, Purple, Orange, White, Black, Brown, Yellow, Gold, Magenta, Lime, Teal, Maroon and Multicolor (called Rainbow Yoshi). These are the only Yoshis that have been seen, however, it is possible that there could be other Yoshis of different colors.
In Yoshi's Woolly World, Yoshis with much more different color patterns can be found.
Other Varieties[]
In the German Club Nintendo magazine, there was a Yoshi-themed horoscope section that revealed a strange and unusual class of Yoshi: the Cancer Yoshi (also known as der Krebs Yoshi). This Yoshi is a dark blue and features a particular pinchy pair of pincers instead of the regular Yoshi hands. Not much seems to be known about this particular Yoshi.
Notable Yoshis[]
