Phantos are evil mask that protect the keys to open the Secret Doors. They can switch from foreground to background. They first debuted in Super Mario Bros. 2 as an enemy, although aren't used much in standard Nintendo titles.

Phanto appears as a Red and Cream/White Mask with a split in the colour down the middle of its face vertically. It has a piercing and constant smile although otherwise appears very simplistic.

Lets-a-go, Mario[]
After not appearing for 25 years, Phantos finally return as enemies. Like in Super Mario Bros. 2, they are dormant until an item is stolen from their chamber. When the item is stolen, they will pursue the player with the item until it is used.
A Phanto character, named Fungraoh, appears, too. When enrages, he changes into an enormous Phanto creature called Phangraoh. In this form, he also has hands made of regular-sized Phantos.
