Super Smash Bros. Worlds Collide is the seventh installment of the Super Smash Bros. series, coming after the 2018 installment, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. It is a platforming fighting game being developed by Grand Star Productions, Namco Bandai Games Inc, Platinum Games Inc, and Sora Ltd. The games feature mostly identical gameplay, but with several differences in other areas. This is the second game of the series to be released on a Nintendo Switch, being released after Ultimate. This game will take inspiration from the cancelled Super Smash Bros. Brawl mod, Project M in which that most characters has been given buffs and nerfs compared to the previous installments, making them better fighters while keeping the roster balanced. This was done to make battles more interesting to play. Even more mechanics and game modes have also been added to make the game feel like it isn't even a Smash Bros game.
Gameplay[]
Worlds Collide keeps the same basic gameplay like the previous titles. The game is a platform fighter, where players control characters from different video game franchises, beating up opponents and increasing their damage percentage making it higher and causing them to fly farther when they are hit again. The main objective is to KO opponents off the stage. All character has the same inputs, but each of them has a different action.
Custom Moves return from Smash 4 after being absent in the previous installment (sans Mii Fighters). However they have been made to be more different than the base move, giving the player more decisions. As a result, they're more difference in attacks like Palutena's and Mega Man's Custom Moves in Smash 4. The Rage mechanic returns, but this time there is no cap, and knockback from attacks will increase as players will take more damage.
Perfect Shielding has now been converted to Shield Countering in which you can counter an attack after performing a Perfect Shield. Footstools can't be teched as in Brawl and SSB4 and gliding from Brawl returns to some characters such as Meta Knight, Pit and applies to new characters like Galacta Knight and Tapu Koko. The selection of difficulty for CPU's have now increased from 1 - 9 to 1 - 12 with 9+ offering a real challenge for pros or players feeling confident. When players are meteor smashed, players under them will also be meteor smashed dubbed, Meteor Slamming. Screen KO's and Star KO's won't appear in the last 30 seconds of battle so players KO'ing others at the last second will get the point. The Directional Air Dodge returns from Ultimate along with Wavedashing from Melee.
Game Modes[]
Classic[]
Classic Mode returns from previous games. Similar to Smash 4 and Ultimate, players can set the difficulty anywhere from 0.0 (No Effort) to 9.0 (Nothing Harder!). It is most similar to its version in Ultimate where every character has their own set of matches and always has a minigame and a boss except for certain characters. Notably, it is a lot longer than in Ultimate, being more similar to its length from SSBM and SSBB. What's different is that you start with two lives rather than one like in Smash 4. If a player completes a stage without getting damaged, you gain an extra stock.
Versus[]
Versus Mode is a multiplayer mode that enables players or cpu's to fight against each other with many settings. The characters can participate in a variety of battles such as Free-for-alls and team battles. The players can also set the rules for the battle including the amount of time, the amount of stock, the items that can be used, handicaps, and the stage that the battle will take place on like in Ultimate. The players can also choose settings for the computer players including computer players' levels. Rules can be changed when playing Special Smash. There are five types of battles:
- Stock - Each player has a limited amount of stocks and they lose them once they fall of the stage. The last player remaining wins.
- Time - Each player has an infinite amount of stocks but the battle has a time limt. The player who knocks the opponents more times than the rest wins.
- Coin - Each player drops a random amount of coins when they are attacked. The player with more coins when the time is up wins.
- Stamina - Each player has a set amount of health and the player that reaches 0 HP, they are knocked out. The last player remaining wins.
- Capture - A new mode introduced to SSBWC. Around the stage is a highlighted area where each player has to go and stay in ti to gain points. The less people there is the more points you'll earn. After a set amount of time, the zone will change places. The player or team with the most points at the end wins.
- Reverse Smash - A new mode introduced in a weird way. Instead of trying to KO a player, you need to be KO'd. However self destructing yourself doesn't count and will punish you as a result.
- Squad Strike - Returning from Ultimate, an elimination-style battle mode where the player can choose between 3-on-3 or 5-on-5 Squad Strikes, which can be carried out with one player on each side playing as three or five characters, or three or five players on each side each playing as one character.
- Smashdown - Also returning from Ultimate, players enter a series of matches selecting a character for each one. After one match ends, however, the characters used in that match are no longer available for subsequent matches, forcing players to select a different character for the next one.
- Tourney - Returning from Ultimate as well, allowing up to 32 participants to compete. After selecting the number of total participants, number of CPU players and tourney type, the game automatically generates a tournament bracket.
All-Star[]
All-Star Mode returns from previous installments. Like the past games, All-Star Mode pits the player against every playable fighter in the game with limited healing options. Like Ultimate, All-Star Mode will be available at the start of the game. DLC characters will be added once downloaded. Similar to the installments, the matches are organized by the years the fighters have been originated. Between 2 and 6 fighters may be fought during a round, with each round getting harder and harder as the CPU gets stronger. The order will always pit Mr. Game and Watch first and Dr. Coyle last (Rex and Pyra in purchased). Only the Mii's dont appear, but can be playable. The stage depends on what characters you are fighting. For example, if you're fighting a team of six with Mr. Game and Watch, you would be fighting on the Flat Zone X stage.
Multi-Man Smash[]
Multi-Man Smash is a type of mode that pits the player (or two players) up against large groups of opponents. There are several different variations of the Multi-Man Smash, all of which return from previous instalments.
- 10-Man Smash: You are fighting against 10 randomly generated Mii Fighters. The last fighter will sometimes be someone on the roster.
- 100-Man Smash: The player fights against 100 fighters. Every 20 fighters, a randomly picked character from the roster will appear.
- 3-Minute Smash: The game challenges the player to fight an onslaught of fighters while surviving for three whole minutes.
- 15-Minute Smash: The player is challenged by the game to get the most KO's in the next fifthteen minutes while surviving.
- Rival Smash: The player fights against a shadow version of the character they chose and will defeat as many fighters to win. If the rival is KO'ed, he/she will respawn.
- Infinite Smash: The match has no time limit and the player will keep beating many fighters until he/she has been defeated.
- Brutal Smash: All of the CPU's will be super strong, even stronger than a Level 12 fighter. The player's knockback has also been changed and no items will spawn.
Smash Run[]
Smash Run is a gameplay mode that first appeared on Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS. It is a combination of platforming and exploration, along with the traditional fighting gameplay. Unlike it's prequel, the island you travel on is a lot larger and there's more to see. The match is also available to edit, such as editing the timer from a 5 minute match to a 15 minute match and changing the enemy spawn rate.
Players are tasked with strengthening their attributes by finding items in chests, as well as defeating numerous enemies from The Subspace Emissary and other game series. Bonus stages are also hidden behind doors in the map also allow for players to take part in challenges that can give them further boosts to their various attributes and more prizes. Special events occur on the map and provides tasks like defeating a mini boss or finding hordes of the same enemies. In Multiplayer mode, players can press giant P-Switches that drop huge Bob-ombs hidering players progress. Enemies do attack the player and some make them drop their power-ups sometimes. If you get KO'd, some of your stats will be decreased as a penalty.
Items can also be found throughout place including "Powers" you can add to your custom character. When the time limit has expired, all power-ups collected are added to the character's stats, and the players compete in one of a variety of "Final Battles", selected randomly, lasting one minute. After a Smash Run match, players will obtain the trophies, character customization items, gold, and powers that they collected while in the adventure course.
Smash Run can now also be played online with other players, or locally with one other player. Players can also run into each other in the map and fight, with a player able to steal half of a player's collected stats should they defeat another player. Co-op mode is also playable in Smash Run.
