This page shows a list of all the enemies found in Paper Mario: The Ancient Book.
Note that the enemies' descriptions are McTail's in-game tattles.
Tattle Log[]
Regular text in names means that it is a regular enemy, bold means it is a main-story Boss, italic means it is a Mini-boss and optional bosses are defined by both.
Notes on Enemies[]
- Any fire based enemy will regain HP when attacked by a fire-based move, and possibly even multiply. Similarly, any ice based enemy (e.g. Ice Puffs or Frost Piranhas) will regain HP when hit by an Ice Storm or ice based attack, but thunder based enemies are a special case: Dark Puffs will not be healed by a Thunder Bolt or a Thunder Rage; they will take damage as normal, but Ruff Puffs will be healed.
- Enemies like Fuzzies, Scaredy Rats or Bandits (and their variants) cannot steal HP or items if the player wears Zap Tap.
- If Bob-omb enemies, Kamikaze Goombas or Bomb Boos are attacked with an explosion, lightning or any fire-based attack, it will set off a chain reaction of explosions.
Picture | Name | HP | Attack | Defense | Description | Moves | Location |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Goomba | 2 | 1 | 0 | That's a Goomba. They're... well, not really strong but at least they try their best, right? They just headbonk you, not really a treat. Most Goombas are considered weak, I dunno if that also includes Tanoombas like me. I hope not! | Headbonk | Various | |
Paragoomba | 2 | 1 | 0 | That's a Paragoomba. They're basically a Goomba with wings. That's pretty cool actually! They dive at you with high speed, but they don't cause much damage. If you jump on them, their wings will disappear and they'll become a regular Goomba. Yeah... poor guys. | Dive | Various | |
Spiky Goomba | 2 | 2 | 0 | That's a Spiky Goomba. They're Goombas that wear spiky helmets in hopes of becoming stronger and more intimidating. They're slightly stronger, but they still have no chance against you. Just one more thing, don't jump on them! Use your Hammer... just sayin'. | Headbonk | Various | |
Gloomba | 10 | 5 | 0 | That's a Gloomba. They are Goombas living underground. I wouldn't make them get angry if I were you. These guys are tough! And I mean it! They jump on you like the others, but they can also run at the two of us at once. I guess living underground has made them go a little cuckoo... | Headbonk Gloom Dash |
Pit of 100 Trials | |
Paragloomba | 10 | 5 | 0 | That's a Paragloomba. Umm... It's very short in words here... they're just Gloombas with wings. Well, they're not a big surprise if you've seen Gloombas already. Jump on them to take their wings out... it's not like that will make them any less stronger though... | Dive Double Dive |
Pit of 100 Trials | |
Spiky Gloomba | 10 | 6 | 0 | That's a Spiky Gloomba. These guys are pretty tough. That spike means business. Since they got their blue coloration due to living underground, they decided to paint their helmets purple. Be careful, they have great power! | Headbonk Gloom Dive |
Pit of 100 Trials | |
Hyper Goomba | 8 | 2 (8 if charged) | 0 | That's a Hyper Goomba. Well... umm, you should be a little bit more worried about these guys. They can charge their power. Take them out before they charge, or you'll have a hard time in painland! | Headbonk Charge |
Twisted Treeline | |
Hyper Paragoomba | 8 | 2 (8 if charged) | 0 | That's a Hyper Paragoomba. Just combine a Hyper Goomba and a Paragoomba and tada! You get these! Since it's just a winged Hyper Goomba, I highly suggest defeating them before they charge their attack power. | Dive Charge |
Twisted Treeline | |
Hyper Spiky Goomba | 8 | 3 (9 if charged) | 0 | That's an Hyper Spiky Goomba. Geez, that's a kinda long name. They're Hyper variations of Spiky Goombas, meaning they're slightly stronger than the other Hypers. You better be quick and not let them charge, just sayin'. | Headbonk Charge |
Twisted Treeline | |
Tanoomba | 8 | 4 | 0 | Oh nice! That's a Tanoomba, just like me! You've seen me fighting so I guess you know what they do right? They use their tails to attack, and they can hover and spin at you. If we're not careful, they might make us get dizzy. | Tail Swing | Everbloom Prairie | |
Bone Goomba | 5 | 3 | 1 | That's a Bone Goomba. Eh, since when is wearing skull masks a thing right now? It's not Boolloween yet! Anyway, their skull masks grant them more defense than other Goombas, and they're also stronger than the average. If you use your hammer, I don't think they'll be a big problem. | Headbonk | Goomba Fortress, Twisted Treeline | |
Lethal Bone Goomba | 12 | 6 | 3 | Oh man... that's a Lethal Bone Goomba! You get goosebumps just by hearing their name! These stronger Bone Goombas are the toughest of the toughest. Main problem about them is their high defense and their spike. If you have a defense piercing attack or item, then it's the best moment to use it! | Headbonk Spike Tackle |
Pit of 100 Trials | |
Headbonk Goomba | 7 | 2 | 0 | That's a Headbonk Goomba. It's a really pale Goomba that likes to headbonk on people for some reason. They can jump at you multiple times in a row so i'd recommend trying to evade it with a guard or something. Kinda annoying but I gotta say their coloration is coolio! | Multibonk | Windvast Meadows, Gragor's Pagoda | |
Kamikaze Goomba | 8 | 8 | 1 | Whoa, that's a Kamikaze Goomba! Those dark Goombas are explosive... don't ask me how, they just are... Those guys can explode and return like nothing happened. They deal real high damage so I suggest we take them out before they go kaboom on us. | Headboom | Pit of 100 Trials | |
Jack O'Goomba | 10 | 3 | 2 | That's a Jack O' Goomba. Those Goombas like pretending to be a jack o' lantern, I dunno why. Each with his own I guess. Their hard pumpkin heads bring them good defense. However, the more we hit them, the more their pumpkins break. If we manage to break it entirely we'll drop their defenses! | Headbonk | Twisted Treeline, Dupli's Manor | |
Goomboss | 12 | 4 | 1 | Whoa, it's Goomboss, king of (some) Goombas! I mean, as a Goomba of sorts I should be afraid of him, but no! He's an enemy and we will beat him! Right? He has great power and more defense than a typical Goomba. Beware of his ground pounds! | Ground Pound Body Slam |
Goomba Fortress | |
Koopa Troopa | 4 | 2 | 1 | That's a Koopa Troopa. Those guys are pretty common. Their shells bring them defense, but if you jump on them they'll flip over and drop their defenses. It must be really awkward when they fall in public... | Shell Toss Get Up |
Various | |
Paratroopa | 4 | 2 | 1 | That's a Paratroopa. Yeah, basically a Koopa with wings. Your hammer can't reach them at first, but if you jump on them their wings will disappear and they'll fall. Kind of a sad start for a regular Koopa Troopa life. | Shell Shot | Various | |
Shady Koopa | 8 | 3 | 1 | That's a Shady Koopa. They look very pale... and blue. They're a special type of Koopa Troopa. They can attack even if they're flipped over and charge their power. Yeah... they're the opposite, it's weird, but cool. | Shell Toss Power Shell Get Up |
Neon Capitale | |
Shady Paratroopa | 8 | 3 | 1 | That's a Shady Paratroopa. It's just a Shady Koopa with wings, nothin' special. Like a Paratroopa, if you stomp it once, they'll become regular Shady Koopas... but like a Shady Koopa, if you flip them over, you'll meet your doom! | Shell Shot | Neon Capitale | |
Dark Koopa | 10 | 5 | 2 | That's a Dark Koopa. They're stronger than most Koopa Troopas and like living in dark places. They're very tough Koopas. Their defense is good, so you should flip them over first. Their sunglasses look cool and all but... isn't it useless to wear sunglasses in dark places? | Shell Toss Flail Get Up |
Pit of 100 Trials | |
Dark Paratroopa | 10 | 5 | 2 | That's a Dark Paratroopa. Those are the dark variants of Paratroopas, and airborne Dark Koopas. Just like their ground cousins, they're tough. Their have hard shells, but you can flip them over by stomping them. | Shell Shot | Pit of 100 Trials | |
Koopter Koopa | 8 | 4 | 2 | That's a Koopter Koopa. What's the result of a Koopa Troopa dreaming of having wings? This guy. They're airborne so your hammer can't reach them... BUT you can't jump on these guys either, because of their propellers. Maybe using a very strong item will help. | Tornado Shell | Windvast Meadows | |
Koopa Mummy | 12 | 5 | 3 | Whoa... That's a Koopa Mummy! Yeah, Koopa Troopas have been around forever! Ages might have passed but these guys still mean business. They can wrap you with their shell bandages, and confuse you with nasty sand. You better use very strong attacks or items! | Wrap Sandstorm Shell |
Pharaoh Depths, Pit of 100 Trials | |
Winter Koopa | 10 | 4 | 2 | That's a Winter Koopa. Those guys are very blue Koopas that like living in cold places and are tougher than the average. They probably got their coloration and strength by adapting themselves to very cold areas. Be careful, they can freeze you, I heard their shells are as cold and hard as an iceberg! | Freezy Shell Shot Igloo Shell |
Whiterock Frontier | |
Koopatrol | 6 | 4 | 2 | That's a Koopatrol. It's a typical Koopa Troopa wearing an armor to protect itself. They have spikes in like, every part of their armor so don't even think on jumping on them! You don't want your feet to get hurt. | Whistle Charge Up Headbutt Shell Toss |
Dupli's Manor, Crystal Sanctuary | |
Dark Koopatrol | 25 | 5 | 2 | How unusual, a Dark Koopatrol. These are a variation of Koopatrols that are extremely powerful and extremely dangerous, possibly the MOST powerful ones. They have spikes too, so better use your hammer! | Headbutt Charge Up Power Shell Hide Get Up |
Pit of 100 Trials | |
Swordsman Koopatrol | 10 | 5 | 2 | That's a Swordsman Koopatrol. Those guys are armored Koopas that were given weapons to fight in wars and the likes. They can use their shields to increase their defenses and protect themselves from attacks like your hammer. Using defense piercing attacks is a good idea, but you also be careful with their slashing moves! | Sword Slash Engarde Power Shell Koopa Shield Counter Get Up |
Moonside Sewers, Pit of 100 Trials | |
Dull Bones | 1 | 2 | 1 | That's a Dull Bones. It was a Koopa Troopa once, it kinda scares me, just look at the creepy face. However it has its defense and is able to summon more Dull Bones, but I don't think it'll resist to even make a move. | Bone Throw Build |
Tower of Mallet, Mystery Pyramid | |
Dry Bones | 8 | 5 | 2 | That's a Dry Bones. It's sort of a skeleton and was a Koopa Troopa before...whatever happened to it. They can throw bones at you and your ally very fast and has a good defense, so be careful with this one, please! | Bone Throw Multibone Build Reconstruct |
Mystery Pyramid | |
Parabones | 8 | 5 | 2 | Well this is a Parabones. It is a Dry Bones with wings, perhaps an undead Paratroopa? They toss bones too, but can also dive at you and reconstruct themselves. Oddly, a hit doesn't turn it into a regular Dry Bones, it keeps its wings and keeps flying. Ew, it smells awful... | Bone Throw Dive Multibone Reconstruct |
Mystery Pyramid | |
Red Bones | 5 | 2 | 1 | That's a Red Bones. It's kind of too red, was it that red when alive? Anyways, they can attack with a bone throwing madness and can summon Dull Bones to help it. How scary, even if dropping its HP to 0, it gets back to life! | Bone Throw Multibone Build Reconstruct |
Tower of Mallet | |
Dark Bones | 20 | 4 | 3 | Whoa, a Dark Bones. It's possibly the baddest of all the Bones family. It's HP is very high, and it has got very powerful bones at its hands! It might even rise again after its HP reachs to 0. Look at that ugly face, it can even hurt you by looking at you... well no it can't, but it's still ugly. | Bone Throw Multibone Build Reconstruct |
Crystal Sanctuary, Pit of 100 Trials | |
Captain Bonebarb | 40 | 5 | 3 | ??? | Sword Slash Shield Up Charge Haunted Bone |
Rockster Caverns | |
Hammer Bro. | 5 | 3 | 1 | That's an Hammer Bro. Another member of the Koopa family. They love throwing hammers at foes. They're somehow tougher than other Koopa enemies. I hope you have quick reflexes, their hammers will smack your face in just a second, so try to guard yourself well. | Hammer Toss | Tower of Mallet | |
Boomerang Bro. | 5 | 3 | 1 | That's a Boomerang Bro. They're similar to Hammer Bros. except they are blue and throw boomerangs. Those guys are super quick and dangerous, they basically deal double the damage I stated. The boomerangs go and come back. They're gonna give me headaches, uuugh. | Boomerang Toss | Tower of Mallet | |
Fire Bro. | 8 | 5 | 1 | That's a Fire Bro. They have red clothing and don't use any weapon, but they've got powerful fireballs! They are able to spit several fireballs at once and attack both you and your ally. I wonder if they used Fire Flowers to gain their abilities... Anyways, you know what would be perfect right now? Some icy attacks, yeah! | Fireball | Tumbleweed Gritsland | |
Ice Bro. | 10 | 5 | 2 | That's an Ice Bro. They're exactly the opposite to the Fire Bros., as they can attack by spitting a bunch of iceballs. Either their helmets are tougher or they're just tougher themselves. Anyways, their attack power is not any different from Fire Bros.'s, but they can freeze us. If you've got any fire items, you know what to do. | Iceball | Mt. Frostmist | |
Big Bash Bro. | 25 | 5 | 1 | That seems to be the so mentioned Big Bash Bro. This guy doesn't look nice at all... well that's kinda obvious. Keep an eye on that big mallet of his, looks like it hurts a lot. This guy is pretty big, just by walking he could crush us, so try guarding yourself pretty well. Use your hammer, his feet are exposed and look like a weakness for him. After all, it's an hammers battle, isn't it? | Sledge Throw Roll Up Splat |
Tower of Mallet | |
Lakitu | 5 | 2 | 0 | That's a Lakitu. These are always seen flying on their clouds for some reason. Have you ever seen a Lakitu walking normally? I think I remember seeing one. Anyways, they can attack with pesky Spinies. Use your jumps to attack it as your hammer won't reach it. | Spiny Flip Spiny Hatch Spiny Hold |
Forest of Spring, Windvast Meadows | |
Spiny | 4 | 3 | 3 | That's a Spiny. Those pesky creatures have shells with spikes on them, so I recomend you not to jump, or perhaps you want to hurt your feet? Anyways, they have high defenses so you should use some item, since your hammer is also a toy for them. | Spikeball Shot Roll Up |
Forest of Spring, Windvast Meadows | |
Dark Lakitu | 13 | 5 | 0 | A Dark Lakitu. They're quite similar to typical Lakitus, except these have red shells and darker clouds. They're way tougher, and use little dangerous blue Spinies, so be careful with them and try to defeat them as fast as you can! | Pipe Flip Pipe Hatch Thunder Throw |
Pit of 100 Trials | |
Sky-Blue Spiny | 6 | 6 | 3 | A Sky-Blue Spiny. The difference about it and a regular Spiny? That they've got a blue shell and are stronger. They also like living in dark places and are thrown by Dark Lakitus. Other than that, they're like Spinies. | Spikeball Shot Roll Up |
Pit of 100 Trials | |
Buzzy Beetle | 5 | 3 | 4 | That's a Buzzy Beetle. These creatures have strong shells that give them a really high defense. They may look harmless, but they're actually very tough enemies. Try to use strong items on them and try to flip them to drop their defense to 0, now they're harmless, magic! | Shell Toss Get Up |
Somber Mansion, Rockster Caverns | |
Spike Top | 5 | 4 | 4 | A Spike Top. Unlike Buzzy Beetles, they've got a large spike on their shell, so you can't jump on them. Since hammers are also weak to them, you should better try to use an item. Ugh, they look so cute, do we really have to battle them? | Shell Toss | Rokcster Cave, Gragor's Pagoda | |
Parabuzzy | 5 | 3 | 4 | This is a Parabuzzy. They are Buzzy Beetles with wings. If you jump on them, their wings will disappear and they'll flip over, so they'll become harmless Buzzy Beetles. I still find them cute... | Shell Shot | Rockster Caverns, Pit of 100 Trials | |
Bony Beetle | 8 | 3 | 4 | How weird, a Bony Beetle. They're skeleton versions of Buzzy Beetles, or undead Buzzy Beetles. They have great HP, but are quite actually like living Buzzy Beetles. There must still be some cuteness in it. | Shell Toss Spiky Slam |
Orange Desertland, Pit of 100 Trials | |
Shy Guy | 7 | 2 | 0 | That's a Shy Guy. Considering their names, it's kinda a surprise that they run into you in the first place... They have good HP but won't cause much damage, and they usually run from you instead of attacking you, they're real shy after all, aren't they? | Flail Shy Dive |
Various | |
Spear Guy | 7 | 3 | 0 | This is a Spear Guy. Whoa, these spears look very dangerous, how can they even dance with them? Well, they use their spears as weapons to attack you and your ally, with stabs and by throwing them. Don't try to jump on them though, they have their spears pointing up just for your feet! | Stab Spear Toss |
Isle Verdozo, Tumbleweed Gritsland | |
Fly Guy | 7 | 2 | 0 | That's a Fly Guy. Basically a Shy Guy with a propeller on its back. The propeller is actually a clever strategy from them, you can neither use your jumps nor your hammer, since they're airborne and their propellers can hurt you. Using an item might work, though. | Swoop Flail |
Various | |
Snifit | 8 | 4 | 0 | This is a Snifit. They are Shy Guys wearing a black mask. Looks kinda intimidating... Their masks have mouth extensions to shoot bullets at you. These bullets cause somewhat higher damage than usual, so be careful and try to dodge them as much as possible! | Bullet Bullet Barrage |
Gragor's Pagoda, Crystal Sanctuary | |
Pyro Guy | 8 | 5 | 0 | This is a Pyro Guy. They are on fire, but it doesn't seem like they really mind it... Being on fire apparently makes them faster and stronger, so we gotta be a bit more careful than usual and not have physical contact with them. The best thing to do is to use any water or ice attack because... well, y'know... | Fireball Blazing Tackle |
Tumbleweed Gritsland | |
Scuba Guy | 7 | 3 | 0 | This is a Scuba Guy. They're pretty much just Shy Guys wearing scuba diving equipment. They're said to desire living underwater forever... don't even ask why. Being underwater doesn't really increase their speed or strength much, but does give them a handful of more abilities! Be careful with their water bomb attacks, they can paralyze us! | Squirt Water Bomb |
Rockster Sea (underwater) | |
Boo Guy | 7 | 4 | 0 | That's a Boo Guy. They're basically Shy Guy spirits, who now wander around aimlessly and have lost all of their shyness! Boo Guys are very agile and tricky. They are able to become invisible, and sneak behind us to attack. So we gotta watch our back and try to dodge them! | Sneaky Invinsibility |
Twisted Treeline, Somber Mansion | |
Ghoul Guy | 12 | 6 | 0 | O-oh... that's a Ghoul Guy! They are similar to Boo Guys, but they are much more powerful, a-and scarier... Not only do they have more strength and power, but are also able to possess a fellow enemy, and Mario, you don't want that to happen! If they manage to possess another enemy, the Ghoul Guys are sacrificed, but will increase the possessed enemy's stats massively, so we gotta be quick! | Sneaky Invinsibility Possess |
Pit of 100 Trials | |
Mecha-Koopa | 5 | 2 | 3 |
That's a Mecha-Koopa. It's a wind-up toy-like Koopa that has the ability to breathe fire and has a high defense. A good hammer ability or item should work. Also, just sayin', the way they look at us is creepy. They're crazy! |
Fire Breath | Moonside Sewers, Shroom Station | |

Big Bandit | 8 | 3 | 0 | That's a Big Bandit. Don't ask me why the name, they're not bigger at all but that's what they call themselves I guess. Those guys wouldn't only like to steal your coins, but also your Items. We must be careful and quick or either we might lose out items. | Coin Dash Item Dash Run Off |
Neon Capitale | |
Badge Bandit | 12 | 4 | 0 | Uh oh... That's a Badge Bandit. I know their name doesn't sound like fun. Like the name says, they not only like to steal coins and items but also... your BADGES! Mario you must be real careful with these dudes! If they do steal a badge, we must be quick and defeat them before they run away to reclaim what is ours! | Coin Dash Item Dash Badge Dash Run Off |

Ninji | 5, 8 | 3,5 | 0 | This is a Ninji. It's some kind of ninja creature. It uses ninja stars, throwing them multiple times, and it can also slam at you. Their defense is slow so you should take advantage on that. | Throwing Star Transformation Slam |

Okooru | 20 | 5 (10 if charged) | 3 | It's an Okooru, a small, meter-like robot. This robot is able to boost energy using its meter, increasing its power and dealing extremely high damage with lasers. It can also ram at you. Use powerful items or abilities that pierces its defense. It looks kind of bored, I wonder why... | Bolt Laser Recharge (+5 Attack Power) Robo-Ram |

Lunater | 5/7/10 | 3/5/5 | 0 | That's a Lunater. These guys seem to be some kind of low-level soldiers. They can use magic potions to make themselves dodgy. If they do, your attacks will be pretty stupid against them for some time. Uhh, they don't seem that difficult, hehe, and it's so midget like, poor thing. | Lunatic Punch Dodgify (Gives dodgy status) |

Elite Lunater | 12 | 5 (10 if charged) | 1 | This is an Elite Lunater. Out of all the soldiers, they seem to be the highest ranked ones, y'know, like the tougher guys and stuff. They're powerful, and very dangerous if they charge their attack power. These guys look like they drank something to get stronger. That's so fair, 'nuff said. | Lunatic Punch Powerify (+5 Attack) |
Lunatic Empire | |
E.M.T. Lunater | 8 | 4 | 0 | An E.M.T. Lunater. They're basically the medics of Darkow's minions. Don't ask me what E.M.T. stands for, I am not really into medicine stuff. Anyways, they create medicines to heal and benefit other Lunaters. Be careful with its fake, toxic medicine, unless you like poison? | Lunar Cure (+5 HP) Toxic Medicine Electrify (gives electrified status) |
