Plot[]
G.U.N soldiers are watching an interuniversal prison. Capt. Abraham Towers calls the troops into the food court for dinner, and they proceed as told. But soon, a large, crystalline hand breaks through the door of a prison cell, and smashes it apart. Mandy, Mephiles the Dark, and Count Bleck are shown ready to fight. "Let's bust out of this prison. Mephiles, what's your master plan?" Mandy asks. "I'll make it up as I go along," Mephiles replies. Meanwhile, a figure with green eyes is shown sneaking through the prison. He walks out of the shadows and is revealed to be Nergal Jr., who busts open another prison cell. Fawful walks out and follows Nergal Jr. through the hallway. G.U.N troops try to stop the villains from escaping, but they succeed in breaking out. Bleck laughs evilly, and Mandy has a smirk on her face. "Now, it's time to begin the master plan," Mephiles says. "Let's go get the Ender Dragon and the Dark Gaia. Then, we can destroy Mario and his friends once and for all."
Meanwhile, Mario and his friends are relaxing at Isle Delfino. Mario, Sonic, and Gumball are talking about each of their recent adventures; Bowser is surfing with his son and Boom Boom; Luigi, Darwin, Tails, and Pac-Man are playing tennis; and Mordecai and Rigby are trying to enter the Videogame Challenge. However, the Dark Gaia appears and spoils the fun by destroying Delfino Plaza. The heroes try to stop it, but the Ender Dragon swoops in and creates a portal to another dimension. The gang is sucked in, and the Ender Dragon and the Dark Gaia roar in triumph. Mandy, Mephiles, and Nergal Jr. are watching from a rooftop. "Now what?" Nergal Jr. asks. "Go to that dimension and make sure those fools can't escape," Mephiles answers. "If they do, we'll deal with them."
Mario and his friends wake up in a wierd dimension. They find themselves on a bayside similar to Emerald Coast from Sonic Adventure and begin exploring it. A huge axe suddenly swings by them and tips them off. Soon, Mario realizes that the Ender Dragon had teleported them into a dimension in which their greatest trials were all put together. "Of course, it can't just be every man for himself when it comes to escaping this dimension," Mario explains. "We have to travel in duos to perform the tasks no lone hero can do." "I'll go with you!" Gumball says quickly. "No, me!" Luigi yells. "I'm his brother and I've been on more adventures with him than you have!" Mario finds a solution to this disagreement: "How about you take turns?" "Whatever," Gumball and Luigi respond in union. The adventure begins from there.
The heroes venture through various worlds in the Trial Dimension. Meanwhile, the villains perform their main roles in the master plan: Mandy manipulates the Flow of Reality, interfering with the various timelines in the meta-universe; Mephiles kills Princess Elise's parents, causing her to cry and free Iblis; Count Bleck uses the Lich, Gobblegut, Chaos, and the Wither to wreak havoc across dimensions; Nergal Jr. tries to kill Mario so he can receive a mysterious black Chaos Emerald known as the Eclipse Emerald from Mephiles; Scourge searches for the other seven Chaos Emeralds; Fawful and Eggman Nega create a robotic army for Mandy, who uses it for world domination; Empress Ballgum creates hazards in the Trial Dimension to prevent the heroes from escaping; andLady Bow sends her Boo minions out to possess everyone.
Occasionally, the heroes escape the Trial Dimension and find that a certain world from a film in the Silver Spurs Trilogy has been interfered with due to Mandy manipulating the Flow of Reality. Mario and his friends will have to fix this world up. But when they're done fixing the world, Ballgum teleports them back into the Trial Dimension.
The group returns to the Mushroom Kingdom and meets up with Princess Peach. Mario tells the other heroes to go make sure that the kingdom has not been affected by Mandy while he guards Peach's Castle. But later, Nergal Jr. electrifies Mario with his tentacles, thus killing him, and kidnaps Peach. Mephiles gives him the Eclipse Emerald, but Nergal Jr. snatches it out of his hands. Mephiles asks why he snatched the Emerald, and Nergal Jr. replies, "Ha! You think I'm even going to tell you that?" and freezes him in a state of suspended animation, along with Mandy and the other villains. He uses the Eclipse Emerald to call the Chaos Emeralds to his location. The seven Chaos Emeralds, combined with the Eclipse Emerald, allow him to gather the four most vicious beasts of reality: the Lich, the Wither, Chaos, and Gobblegut. Now, he must find the Master Emerald and use it to fuse with the beasts into Grim Monstrosity, so he can take all of reality at once for himself.
Gumball and the other heroes must find the seven Chaos Emeralds (along with the Eclipse Emerald) and use them to revive Mario. They split into duos (of course): Gumball and Sonic look for the Green Emerald; Bowser and Eggman look for the Red Emerald; Mordecai and Rigby search for the Yellow Emerald; Luigi and Pac-Man search for the Blue Emerald; Mega Man and Mecha Mario look for the Sky Blue Emerald; Boom Boom and Pom Pom look for the Purple Emerald; Finn and Steve search for the White Emerald; and Shadow and Knuckles search for the Black/Eclipse Emerald. Once they have all been collected, Peach wishes on them to revive Mario, and the heroes enter the Flow of Reality to defeat Nergal Jr., who, unfortunately, already has the Master Emerald in his hands. He fuses with the four beasts (i.e. Chaos, Lich, Wither, and Gobblegut) and becomes Grim Monstrosity, and the final battle begins.
Unfortunately for Nergal Jr., he is defeated by the combined powers of the heroes. The heroes celebrate their victory, then return to their respective universes. Meanwhile, the villains manage to break out of their state of suspended animation, only to realize one thing: the Chaos Emeralds are gone. Mandy shouts with fury, "Those weaklings may have won this round, but I'll get them yet! ...And that infernal rebel Nergal Jr. too!"
