Super Mario Bros.: Heroes of the Stars is a flash fangame conceived by Harry Vallet. It is inspired by Nintendo's Super Mario 64 and Paper Mario. Many levels and features are based upon it and other of Nintendo's games, but a variety of them are completely original. Among them include a detailed storyline, ability to switch between Mario and Luigi, a highly customizable Level Designer with sharable codes, four different Power-ups for Mario and Luigi, and seven Star Spirits to collect. It is not related to the web series of the same name created by AsylusGoji91.

Story[]
Prologue[]
Welcoming the player to this game, Rosalina takes us a place that lies far beyond the sky and far above the clouds, called Star Haven. Within the sanctuary of Star Haven lies the Star Rod, which can grant any and all wishes. The seven Star Spirits use this artifact to watch over and protect the Mushroom Kingdom. Until one day, Bowser and Kamek appear in the sanctuary. Bowser shatters the protective seal over the Star Rod and grabs it in hopes of using its power to rule the Mushroom Kingdom forever. The Star Spirits are then trapped inside cards by Kamek. With the Star Rod now in Bowser's possession, the Mushroom Kingdom is now covered in darkness, and everyone there fled in search for a new home.
Actual Story[]
The actual story begins with Luigi crying out to the Star Spirits to help save the Kingdom. Just then, Toadsworth and Yoshi arrive with a letter from Bowser about not only his successful plan of world domination, but states that each Star Spirit is left trapped in one of seven dimensions and challenges them to find them. Luigi accepts this task, so he grabs his brother, Mario (who is in the shower), and then all four of them set off to the Mushroom Kingdom when they run into Kamek, who locks them out. Eventually, Yoshi finds a rabbit holding a key to the Mushroom Kingdom, and after trading with it, they go inside and locate Belle, the youngest denizen of the Mushroom Kingdom, whose father, Maurice, was lost in the Bob-omb Battlefield.
Actual Gameplay[]
The actual gameplay starts by rescuing Princess Peach, the ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom, who sets off to bring back her people. As the Mario Bros progress, they learn from Eldstar, the first Star Spirits they rescued from the Bob-omb Battlefield, of how Bowser stole the Star Rod. He further explains that the cards in which they have been trapped are now divided among Bowser's forces commandeered by his Koopalings, and that the Mario Bros must save and release them. In doing that, Mario will gain a power called the Star Beam, which can be used to break Bowser's invincibility and allows Mario to defeat him.
Eventually, all seven Star Spirits have been rescued from each of the seven Courses (along with every single citizen of the Mushroom Kingdom returned), and the decision was made to take the battle to Bowser in his lair. The Star Spirits use their magic to create a painting portal that can take the Mario Bros. to Bowser's Castle where the enemies they faced before lurked before confronting Bowser himself face-to-face.
Epilogue[]
After Bowser is defeated at the hands of the Mario Bros., he was originally banished back into the Valley of Darkness, but to ensure he doesn't return along with all his forces, he ends up trapped in the Book of Koridai, never to return.
Rosalina appears before the player, explaining that they may have seen the last of Bowser and his forces, but there was still much to do, and that their journey with the Mario Bros. was only just beginning.
Midway Gate serve as checkpoints; should Mario or Luigi suffer a fatal injury, they would respawn from the last midway gate they put up, due to the gate “repeating” the path they had already taken.
Giant Gate
Giant Gates appear at the end of each level in the game. The barrier around the gate protects it from the Mario Bros. until they free all three Toads and eliminate all the enemies in each level.
Power-Up Blocks are boxes that contain Power-Ups that can help the Mario Bros. solve challenging puzzles and such; the red/pink boxes are for Mario, and the green ones are for Luigi.
Bowser’s bodyguards that are somewhat more powerful than Goombas (because they use their shells as shields to defend themselves against any attack) and can only be fought off by Mario and/or Luigi when not hiding in their shells.
Powerful weapons that can shoot Bullet Bills at you and are operated each by one Goomba. They can only be hit when Mario and/or Luigi throw the Bullet Bills back at it until it is disabled and destroyed.
