Tier List[]

The game's current tier list can be viewed here. It was organized by the Smash Back Room on Smashboards. According to the list, Sheik is the "best" character in the game.

In gaming, a tier list is a list that ranks all characters based on the strength of their fighting abilities and their potential to win matches under tournament conditions, assuming equal skill on the part of each player. A tier list is decided based on the analysis of the following:

  • The metagame and the effectiveness of the characters' strategies
  • Each character's moveset and statistics
  • Each character's matchup spread
  • Each character's tournament results

Tier lists are commonly made for fighting games that are played on the high competitive level, such as Mortal Kombat 9. Some games that aren't fighting games, but have large character sets, such as the Pokémon series, can also have their own tier lists. Read more on this here.

Stages[]

There are 95 stages appearing in the game. Omega Stages Ω have been confirmed to return except this time around they are completely modeled after Final Destination which means no walls. The new feature Alpha Stages α has been confirmed and are stages modeled after Battlefield. Not all stages will have Alpha or Omega counterparts but instead some will have a an Alpha counterpart while the others will have and Omega counterpart only. All stages have builds for the returning 8-Player Smash.

Game Modes and Features[]

Single Player Modes[]

  • Classic Mode: Classic mode from Super Smash Bros. WiiU returns. Completing it unlocks a special trophy, various art of the character, and an album picture for the character.
  • All-Star Mode: All-Star mode from Super Smash Bros. WiiU returns.  Completing it unlocks an All-Star trophy for the character completed with.
  • Training
  • Trophy Rush: In Trophy Rush, the player selects any character they wish, then selects how long they wish to play the game. The minimum length of time is 30 seconds, though it can be increased by one second for every six Coins the player adds to the cost, with the maximum possible playtime being 150 seconds. In the actual game, the player is tasked with destroying as many crates that fall onto the small platform they are standing on as possible; a line high above the platform indicates how high the crates can go, and if this line is breached for too long a period, then the platform disappears, forcing the player to be KOed, as the platform doesn't reappear until the player falls. In addition to this danger, electrical balls, bombs, and specialised boxes that shoot fire from one side can fall onto the stage, which the player needs to avoid. Getting KOed for any reason in the mode causes a deduction of fifteen seconds of playtime. While destroying boxes, the player is able to attain a "chain", which is broken if they fail to destroy any boxes in a small period of time; the higher the chain, the higher their score, as well as the higher the rate the "Fever" meter increases. The player receives a score based on how many crates they have broken in the timespan, after which an appropriate number of trophies, custom moves, and other bonuses are rewarded. In addition, a meter present in the mode slowly fills up the more crates the player breaks; filling up this meter leads to a Fever, where specialised blocks holding coins, trophies, and customization options constantly fall onto the stage.
  • Event Mode: Completing events unlocks stages and various things ranging from art to trophies.

NEW Single Player Modes[]

  • Smash Ace: Smash Run with a new name and a couple new features, one being split screen multiplayer. Players can now select 1 of 6 pre-built maps for the run and can be played with up to 4 players split-screen. The run time can be chosen between 5 minutes, 10 minutes, and 15 minutes. Following a run, players will either take part in a smash battle on a special battle stage for the run stage selected or a race on a special race stage for the run stage selected. Bosses, enemies, and other characters from various series and franchises appear.
  • Smash World: Smash World is the big new single player mode which functions somewhat like a story mode. Each character has their own little mini-story and the battles in one fighters story will be different from the other. Clearing a fighter’s story in Smash World unlocks and alternate costume for that fighter, and alternate costume trophy, and a special trophy for that fighter. According to Kamiya, Smash World gets players and fans a lot closer to their loved characters.

Multiplayer Modes[]

  • Smash: Also known as "VS Mode", it is the traditional 4-player battle that can be done with either players or CPUs.
  • 8-Player Smash: VS Mode in which up to 8 players can play on larger versions of all maps.
  • Special Smash: 2-8 player battles with special conditions. Turbo and All Star Smash from the fangame Project M are new conditions by popular demand.
  • Classic Mode: Classic mode from Super Smash Bros. WiiU returns. Completing it unlocks a special trophy, various art of the character, and a album picture for the character.
  • All-Star Mode: All-Star mode from Super Smash Bros. WiiU returns.  Completing it unlocks an All-Star trophy for the character completed with.
  • Tournament: Tournament Mode from SSB4 returns.
  • Stadium: All Stadium Modes from Smash 4 return with Boss Battles from Brawl returning. More info on the Bosses coming soon...

NEW Multiplayer Modes[]

  • Crew Smash: Crew Smash is a new multiplayer mode which involves 2 players (or teams) going against each other. It works just like the classic Smash mode but players must choose a character that would be played on each stock. Only 2-5 stocks can be played and a game is always best 2 of 3. In the victory screen, only surviving fighters are shown (of course the character with the best performance gets most of the spotlight). It can be played Player v. Player, Player v. CPU, and CPU v. CPU. Its bears somewhat resemblance to the "Special All-Star Mode" in Project M.
  • Smash the Flag: Functions very similarly to a Capture the Flag type game mode. Teams must be equal, must have at least 3 players on each, and up to 4 players can be on one team. The camera is placed at vertical view behind the fighters so players may have to adapt to the controls. The camera spans the whole stage if played locally. This leads to less tactical and strategy based play as you can see where everybody is right in front of you. Although the camera spans the whole stage, and the stages designed for this mode aren’t really large, it really shouldn’t be a problem to keep track of your character.

Online Modes[]

  • With Anyone: For Fun: In this mode, players fight each other in four-player free-for-alls or two-on-two team battles, with all items turned on. All stages are playable except for Final Destination; stages are selected at random with no player choice. This mode affects the player's character records, but does not keep explicit statistics on the player's performance. The new mode, Smash Ace, is playable in For Fun.
  • >With Anyone: For Glory: During this online mode, players can fight anonymously with other players. All matches are played on Final Destination, Omega forms, or Alpha forms of other stages, with no items naturally spawning. Custom characters are eligibile, but, equipment on characters is not allowed. Players can select to play two-stock one-on-one matches with a six minute time limit or two stock team battles with team attack on in two-on-two or free-for-all matches. Both wins and losses from matches are recorded in this mode, alongside other statistics.
  • With Friends: Can play with friends on your friends lists with custom rules. All multiplayer modes except Stadium can be played online with friends and there are now 8 slots meaning up to 8 players can be in the same game at the same time.
  • Tournament: Tournament Mode from SSB4 returns.
  • Conquest: While a conquest is ongoing, the game aggregates global wins among specific groups of characters (known as teams) in With Anyone during a limited time, and determines the victor based on the number of wins. Players automatically participate in Conquest when playing With Anyone, and there is no way to otherwise prevent their data from being sent. After contributing points to a certain team or character, players cannot contribute again until 16 hours have passed. Upon the conquest being completed, going to the conquest menu will reveal the overall results and potentially provide rewards.
  • Spectate: Spectate from Smash WiiU returns.
  • World Stats

NEW Online Modes[]

  • Hub: Here you can set your Online Picture and various other things including taunt messages and online settings. Also you can access other online modes including ranked, with friends, for glory, and for fun from the hub. Online parties of up to 4 players is now possible in the new Team War Section.
  • Ranked: Play against players from your region or all around the world. Win and Loss is calculated and you as an individual gain 2.5 points from a win and 0.5 from a loss. During ranked battles you play a random opponent using Nintendo Tournament rules. Smash Bros. this time around has decided to become much more open to the competitive community. This means that matches are played in sets (2 of 3) on tournament legal stages with no items, 2 stocks, and 6 minutes. Players who leave mid-game gain 2 loses.
  • Ranked Leaderboards: View every player’s rankings in each state, region, country, or world. Every stat you can possibly think of (those shown at the end of a game) can be viewed for each player. Players receive different rewards (Hub Profile Icons, Trophies etc.) depending on how long they stay in certain position group, first place and etc.
  • Team War: Smash the Flag: Functions very similarly to a Capture the Flag type game mode.
  • Smash Ace: Can be played online with friends and is available in For Fun. Smash Run with a new name and a couple new features, one being split screen multiplayer.

  • Amiibo, Mii Fighters and Custom Fighters.

NEW Vault Modes[]

  • Fighter Link: A new mode that allows players to view every animation for every character and a little backstory behind the animation. Animations range from movements to attacks, special attacks, and final smashes.
  • Smashing Art: Players can view various art ranging from character art to different game box arts to location art to development art. Each art includes a little description to along with it. No in-depth page planned ATM.

Features[]

  • Alternate Specials: More or less a name change of Custom Moves. The thing is some characters actually pack a completely different "custom" move for example Mario’s 1st Alternate Down Special being Mario Tornado and not a F.L.U.D.D variation.
  • Individual Character Victory Themes: Some characters now have their own individual victory theme. Top-Rep Characters like Mario and Link retain their old victory themes.
  • Models: Character Modeling is now a mix between that of Brawl and that of Smash 4. Characters have that cartoonish feel mixed with the realistic feel. A nice balance between the two. The characters and stages also appear more vibrant.
  • Competitive Notes: The rage effect does still exist but to a lower extent and the speed of the gameplay is slightly faster than that of Smash 4. This is arguably the best competitive/party mix of smash bros. to date.

Alternate Costumes and Palette Swaps[]

Each character has a total of 8 different color swaps. Every character starts with 6 color swaps. Some characters have an alternate costume, which gives them slight attribute changes that dont affect them too much, which can be unlocked through completing the character’s Smash World story. amiibo (アミーボ, amiibo) are a line of interactive figurines available for usage with the *** and New Nintendo 3DS systems. By scanning an amiibo with near field communication technology, players can receive various effects in games. For the ***, amiibo are scanned using the ***. While the concept of figurines using NFC technology to interact with the Wii U was previously explored with Pokémon Rumble U, Super Smash Bros. 4 was the first game to feature the amiibo branding, acting as the debut and flagship title for the line.

amiibo, when scanned by the console, allows the character represented by the figurines to be used in-game; the character can be modified by players with character customization options available in the game, and their stats can be modified further by "feeding" equipment to them. Unlike with normal fighters, amiibo fighters can be given any kind of equipment, including the ones that they're not normally compatible with; for example, an amiibo Mario can be given Hammer equipment, which would normally be impossible. There is a limit to how many times the amiibo can be fed in one session, however, and any equipment that's given to an amiibo is permanently lost. Also, when boosting an amiibo's stats, the amiibo's stat total can't go higher than 120.

amiibo also gain gold and other items while fighting, which are retrieved when checking them in the amiibo menu. The longer the amiibo has fought, the more presents and gold are received.

Trophies and customization parts picked up by amiibo can be retrieved when the amiibo is scanned on it's owner's console, however, it appears that CDs cannot be retrieved. After this, they can be used as a specialized computer player, with the tag "FP" (Figure Player) above them. If they are used as CPU fighters, figurines start at level 1 like regular CPU players, but as they fight more often, they can continue to level up, to a cap of 50. As they gain levels, amiibo can potentially "learn" techniques from other characters; if a player frequently uses long-ranged, camping techniques, then the amiibo will also begin to emulate this behavior. This learning continues even after the 50 level cap is reached. In addition, an amiibo can gain improved fighting statistics, such as improved damage, knockback, and reaction times, the higher its level is. Finally, higher-levelled amiibo can adapt to individual matches faster than lower-leveled amiibo; if an opponent takes on an aggressive, rush-down style against an amiibo in one match, for instance, it will begin to make more use of defensive techniques like spot dodges and rolls.

amiibo can be used on any copy of the game, and the character on the amiibo is tied to the figurine, allowing for players to use its customized moveset and fighting style wherever they desire. For Smash V, amiibo are being released in waves. Several staggered release dates have been announced, with each date containing a subset of the entire Smash lineup. The known waves, the figurines they contain, and their release dates are detailed below; waves are listed in their North American sets and dates, although the contents of each wave sometimes vary by region. Smash-related amiibo are priced at $12.99 USD in the Americas, £10.99 GBP in the United Kingdom, $17.95 AUS in Australia, ¥1200 JPY in Japan, and €14.99 EUR in Europe.
