Fantendo - Game Ideas & More

Super Mario Battlefront is an open-source, online-targeted fighting video game developed by TimeStrike and published by Nintendo for Microsoft Windows, based on the original Super Mario Bros. formula established back in 1985. Based on the concepts of Super Mario Maker and the fangame Super Mario War, players battle each other in arena maps of varying sizes, with the typical objective being to deplete their stocks to achieve victory. The objectives could be quite different depending on the settings of the hosted game. The game's stylistic choice is completely original, although the physics engine is something of a cross between Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World rather than being completely original.

Outside of the main game, the player can directly enter the game's for-public source code and create and edit levels of their very own. They can also edit levels already pre-made by TimeStrike or Nintendo themselves, including the levels featured in the single-player campaign, and therefore edit its difficulty to be easier or more difficult. When making levels, players can make use of tiles, items, and enemies from Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, Super Mario Land, and Yoshi's Island. Apart from level editing, players can also alter the theming and graphical design of the game to their own liking, although any game-breaking errors will force the conflicting sprite to restart to its default form.

Gameplay

Modes

There are two primary modes of gameplay: single-player and multiplayer. Out of them both, multiplayer is the more popular option as the game is meant to be played with friends either at home or online, but the single-player campaign has quite a bit to it. In the single-player campaign, the player can battle other characters in the game on several pre-made maps with the intent to defeat them and move on. The story of this campaign is simple and fairly cliché: track down and defeat Bowser while dealing with the various fighters he hypnotized along the way to go out of their own way to defeat the player.

  • Single-player: Face off against many foes in the Koopa's Road campaign, battling it out on stages pre-made by Nintendo or TimeStrike as you make your way up the ladder! Get to the bottom of the mystery behind Bowser's hypnotized army and find the culprit.
  • Multiplayer: Take control of a character as you battle it out in stages that either you or the official companies made! Battle against another player or up to seven enemies with any objective you wish.

General

Gameplay is rather basic in execution; players are set off to seek each other out and try and break their foes down in most modes, although some other modes may merely just be different variations of competition. Movement and pacing is like Super Mario World's -- each character has the same basic core of walking/running/jumping/spin jumping/holding items. When it's not all about battling, it's all about exploration -- most of the pre-made level maps have a lot of places to look out for and explore in their eternities, and have their own secrets to discover. Their cleverness is shaped off of the cleverness of "good" Expert/Super Expert levels found in the public domain of Super Mario Maker. Whatever objective and mode you're in, you are to pick up items and battle it out against foes while taking advantage of the terrain in your level. The goal is... to win.

Stages are laid out like Mario levels, often with great horizontal dimensions and decent vertical ones, but the layouts are smaller than levels that you would typically find in a game like New Super Mario Bros. U. As such, item boxes and enemies are laid out accordingly and the difficulty of these levels ire more or less the same. This only really applies to the majority of Nintendo's levels though, TimeStrike's levels and various levels made by fans are generally more twisted than that and sometimes make full use of the crazy creative limits that the game allows. Added on to traditional elements are weather conditions and events -- these can help alter the tide of a battle. Weather can add effects to stages that have weather conditions enabled and events can spawn some intense heat that players will have to make their way around.

Each of the 24 playable characters have their own unique gimmick and playstyle, and as such make use of the playable arenas in Super Mario Battlefront in many different ways. Most characters feature two gimmicks, but some feature just one and a few have either none or three in total. Some characters operate in ways that others don't, which means that character chemistries and relationships in regards to gameplay can result in unique matchups and scenarios, especially if the stages are varied in their content or specifically help one character rather than the other. To help players realize the full potential of their characters, each character has their own home stage to practice their own techniques on.

Weather Effects

Note: Some of the weather effects can be combined together.

  • Clear: The most common weather condition. Nothing happens when the weather is just strictly clear.
  • Rainy: Rain can result in windows being fogged and pattering sounds that can disrupt quieter sounds, which can be fatal sometimes.
  • Snowy: Similar to the rainy condition, but snow can cover the ground and obscure smaller characters.
  • Windy: Wind conditions can push characters that are light and small around and make it hard for heavy characters to move.
  • Hot: The stage sizzles, and players that aren't in the shade will be on a timer before taking damage.
  • Cold: Identically to the hot condition, but characters need to be in the shade to evade blizzards to avoid damage.

Events

Note: Some events can take place at the same time as others can, so there might be "Double Features".

  • BOOST: All characters will have one of three stats upgraded to the max: Speed, Jump, or Power. On very rare occasions, all three stats may be raised instead of just one of them!
  • FRENZY: Items and coins are falling everywhere! Players can go out and try to collect the items and coins they want before they all disappear within seconds.
  • SIEGE: Bowser's minions will fall all over the level! Players should take initiative and beat them up as quick as they can before they keep respawning at uncomfortable rates!
  • TREASURE: A random treasure room will pop up somewhere in the map! Players can seek out the treasure room to be the first one to get their hands on a rather rare item!
  • WANTED: A giant, powerful boss enemy will spawn somewhere on the map! This enemy doesn't have to be defeated, but it can do quite a bit to the stage in a short amount of time!

Level Creation

In Super Mario Battlefront, the player can open up the level editor to make levels to their own desires. The interface is very similar to Super Mario Maker, although dimensions are more flexible and there's a lack of SFX and theme-choosing options. By clicking on a theme twice, one can see all the objects and enemies that are typically assorted with that sort of environment. Pipes also work in a new way -- by clicking on a pipe twice, they'll be given an option to link it to another pipe on the map. The following themes they can choose from by default are: Ground, Underground, Underwater, Desert, Snow, Ghost House, Airship, and Castle.

Objectives

After picking a stage, players need to agree on what sort of "goal" they should go for before hopping in. There are a total of twelve different goals they can choose from, each with a different sort of strategy to them.

Mode Description
Classic Stomp down on foes' heads or use power-ups to knock out their stocks in a classic Mario Bros. frenzy. Players should be aware of their surroundings and take care of all approaching opponents whenever possible. Last player to survive the harsh battle is the winner.
Timed As the clock ticks down, players need to knock out as many lives as possible! Players need to seek each other out to gain points or run away if they have a good lead on their hands. Once the timer is down to its last quarter, enemies will come out to seek the players! The one with the most kills by the end is the winner.
Tag Tag, you're it! The first player to be touched by another becomes "It", and the person who's "It" should try and tap another player to give them that burden! After every 30 seconds, the person who's "It" is eliminated. The last person remaining is the victor!
Collectors Coins will fall absolutely everywhere! Players must try to collect anywhere from 50 to 250 coins (depending on settings) before the other players have the chance to. The person who's collected the required number of coins will be the victor of the usually quick match.
Gladiators Several minions from Bowser's army infiltrate the battlefield! What do Mario and friends do? Step all over them! Players must look around and attempt to defeat the most amount of enemies possible, anywhere from 20 to 100. The first person to accomplish this task is the victor.
Territory Players will need to go around the arenas to cover as much ground as possible with the colored ink they leave behind! The idea in this "Territory" mode is to "own" most of the stage before all the ground is covered or the timer runs out. Players can run over each other's ground to gain that territory. Person with the most territory in the end is the winner!
Race In Race mode, player will race around the map to collect numbered balloons, labelled 1 through 5. After these balloons are all tapped in order, the player has finished their lap! Depending on settings, there may be anywhere from 2 to 10 laps. The first person to finish all laps is the winner.
Puzzle Puzzle mode is quite unique, for the players must use different items in the levels to find Shine Sprites hanging around the level. Collecting anywhere from 5 to 20 of these (depending on settings) will result in victory. Koopa shells, P-switches, and POW-blocks may be necessary to get these sprites.
King of the Hill A square point box will travel around the arena! Players must try to get to it when it's in a resting position to get points from staying in it, but other players seeing other players get points must attempt to scare them out of it or crush them so they can get points themselves! Once 100 to 500 points are reached by the lead player, the game is won.
Domination Empty dotted blocks will be found all over the course! Players should touch them to get them to light up into their own personal colors, and each block touched will increase the rate they get points (1.0x to 1.2x to 1.4x, etc.). People can steal each other's blocks, so beware! First person to achieve 100 to 500 points is the winner.
Survival Hazards will fall everywhere on the stage haphazardly, so players need to watch their step as fireballs and thwomps fall down in various places! The chaos really begins when Koopalings start to jump on the field, firing their magic everywhere. Last survivor is the victor!
Phanto Oooh, is that a key from Super Mario Bros. 2...? Pick it up, and a Phanto will suddenly appear! Players need to be careful to avoid the Phanto's swift strikes and keep holding up that key, as it will grant points as long as it's held. More Phantos will appear with time. The first person to reach 100 to 300 points in this dangerous mode is the victor!

Characters

Super Mario Battlefront is home to a total of 24 characters, with many of your usual characters and some oddballs. The roster attempts to balance itself between the main cast and characters from spin-off titles or characters that aren't used nearly as often as others. All characters are available from the start. Anyone can pick any character. As there can be as many as 4 players in a single match, each character has several distinguishable palettes. Each character can walk, run, jump, crouch, and stomp.

Mario
Luigi
Peach
Mario · Balanced Luigi · Defensive Peach · Balanced

Mario's style is balanced, so he can handle about any general task given to him. While easy to use and capable of going on offense and defense quite easily, the other characters can get out of his reach easily with their varying strengths.

Abilities: Triple Jump, Wall Jump

(+) Simple to play
(+) Jack of all trades
(-) Master of none

With his high jumps and slippery descents, Luigi's game is a little more defensive as he can use these talents to gracefully avoid attacks. His slipperiness, however, comes with the cost of him being risky to use as his controls are more limited.

Abilities: Green Missile, Wave Dash

(+) Big jumps
(+) Quite fast
(-) Slippery stops

Our fair princess moves rather slowly and more royally than most characters, but her ability to float temporarily in the air gives her an edge that other characters lack. She can also charge her jumps to reach higher areas.

Abilities: Peach Float, Charge Jump

(+) Levitation ability
(+) Can charge jumps
(-) Poor speed

Daisy
Toad
Yoshi
Daisy · Balanced Toad · Offensive Yoshi · Defensive

Equipped with a dice block and a tennis racket, Daisy is sure to frustrate opponents with her ability to deflect projectiles and strike her opponents with above-average range. While lacking Peach's ability to hover, she is unarguably better at defense.

Abilities: Dice Toss, Racket Jam

(+) Above normal range
(+) Balanced strengths
(-) Poor utility outside combat

With his breakneck speeds, Toad can chase down and attack any character with a head-dash attack and downright pummel them. To compensate for his rather low jumps, Toad can wall jump to try and keep the chase going against his enemies.

Abilities: Head Dash, Wall Jump

(+) Fast speed
(+) Can wall jump
(-) Low jumps

Yoshi is a unique character, able to take enemies into his mouth and either turn them into eggs or spit them out. His two techniques work together to make him into a formidable foe. While having great mobility, he's unable to break bricks on his own.

Abilities: Tongue, Toss, Flutter

(+) Quick and nimble
(+) Long range with tongue
(-) Poor strength

Donkey Kong
Wario
Waluigi
Donkey Kong · Offensive Wario · Offensive Waluigi · Balanced

Donkey Kong's impressive strength allows him to go reckless, featuring huge arms that can smash opponents from up close and hit multiple blocks at once. While featuring no real abilities, his lack of other hindrances is useful for him (but not for his enemies!).

Abilities: None

(+) Good mobility and strength
(+) Great range with arms
(-) No extra abilities

Wario is a powerful character that can break brick blocks regardless of the form he's taking and can resist a second hit at his smallest form. This allows him to play risky and chase down foes, but his poor mobility can be somewhat hindering at times.

Abilities: Wario Quake, Shoulder Bash

(+) Always powerful
(+) Quite durable
(-) Lacking in mobility

Waluigi is appropriately one of the strangest characters in the game, able to swim through the air and launch Bob-ombs from a tennis racket held in his hand. His slowness and tall frame make him an easy target, however.

Abilities: Air Swim, Bob-omb Launch

(+) Able to swim through air
(+) Easy damage-racking attack
(-) Very poor speed

Birdo
Rosalina
Vivian
Birdo · Defensive Rosalina · Defensive Vivian · Offensive

Birdo has a great system of defense, able to block approaches with her egg bombs and toss her bowtie forward like a boomerang to sweep enemies away harmlessly. Her approach is generally non-violent, with her goals strictly about taking what's hers!

Abilities: Egg Shot, Bowmerang

(+) Helpful, harmful projectile
(+) Can keep foes off her back
(-) No athletic strengths

Rosalina is unique as she is accompanied by a Luma, whom plays a large role in her gameplay. She can call the Luma back towards her if it separates and use it to counterattack enemies in front of her. She can also launch herself far with a Sling Star.

Abilities: Luma Call, Guard, Star Launch

(+) Extra shield through Luma
(+) Incredible mobility
(-) Lack of offensive options

Vivian boasts one of the more unique variations of gameplay, able to pull herself into shadows that move across the ground to sneak about and send off a wave of fire that scorches foes in front of her. She has to recharge that move, however.

Abilities: Shadow Sink, Fiery Jinx

(+) Useful, sneaky maneuvers
(+) Screen-wide fire attack
(-) Generally slow

Dry Bones
Bowser
Larry
Dry Bones · Balanced Bowser · Defensive Larry · Offensive

Dry Bones has a hindrance and a strength in reshaping himself whenever he's hit in his small form, merely falling apart than disappearing. He can toss bones from afar and rattle his own bones to send opponents backwards in fright.

Abilities: Bone Throw, Bone Rattle

(+) Back-off strategies
(+) Can revive self in good spots
(-) ...And vice versa

One of the more unorthodox characters, Bowser is completely invincible to being "stomped" and can burn apart blocks and players alike with his flames. While he can't use most power-ups, he can upgrade his flames with items like Ice Flowers.

Abilities: Flame Wave, Hammer Swing

(+) Invincible to contact
(+) Can burn 70% of things
(-) Can't use most powerups

Bowser's youngest Koopaling can race around the battlefield well on his shell and use his wand to turn blocks into different enemies or useful items. While really predictable as his actions outside of those are limited, creative players can evade that.

Abilities: Shell Dash, Wand Burst

(+) Really tough to hit
(+) Excellent speed/power mix
(-) Predictable

Pauline
E
Fawful
Pauline · Defensive E. Gadd · Offensive Fawful · Offensive

Pauline is all about keeping herself well-guarded, with players having to toss barrels to discourage approaches and Molotov cocktails to set either opponents, blocks or her barrels aflame. She needs space however, or she will end up injuring herself.

Abilities: Barrel Roll, Molotov Shot

(+) Useful projectile weapons
(+) Good mobility and defense
(-) Aim is hard to perfect

E. Gadd plays a strong offensive role, especially in teams. Using F.L.U.D.D., he can push opponents off of ledges and also gain a boost to higher ledges. He can also toss Stuffwell to damage opponents and unleash a random item from it on contact.

Abilities: F.L.U.D.D., Stuffwell

(+) Very useful spacing techniques
(+) Incredible utility with F.L.U.D.D.
(-) High difficulty curve

With his trusty Vacuum Helmet, Fawful can simultaneously fly and attack, and with these abilities he has great presence in the air. Fawful can send out green energy balls from the helmet to attack arcs of enemies in the air. He lacks steady controls, however.

Abilities: Vacuum Rise, Fury Attack

(+) Great air mobility
(+) Attacks reach quite far
(-) Poor ground tactics

Nabbit
Captain Syrup
Geno
Nabbit · Balanced Captain Syrup · Defensive Geno · Balanced

Nabbit has rather average stats all-around, meaning that he can handle about any playstyle rather well. His specialty, however, is being able to steal items from other players and taking items from far, far away. Otherwise he's got nothing special.

Abilities: Item Nab, Phantom Reach

(+) Ability to steal items
(+) Invincible to direct contact
(-) Can't actually use items

Captain Syrup's fire and bombs are more suited for helping her progress in a stage rather than harming enemies, allowing her to get a lead. Her high speed means that she can steal what she needs to as well -- but a player should mind her fragile form.

Abilities: Genie's Fire, Bombardment

(+) Incredible agility
(+) Outstanding progression tools
(-) Fragile and easy to attack

Geno has some outright killer weapons and he can boost his own stats in a mere few seconds to upgrade his powers. He needs to be super precise with his attacks, but his Geno Whirl can kill instantly and his Geno Blast can also auto-kill if boosted.

Abilities: Geno Whirl, Geno Boost, Geno Blast

(+) Nice offense tactics
(+) One of the most nimble
(-) Attacks can be easily read

Petey Piranha
Mouser
Shokora
Petey Piranha · Defensive Mouser · Offensive Shokora · Balanced

With his huge size, Petey Piranha players can break through terrain and destroy blocks. He's got no need for items as he can spew goop everywhere, which can harm opponents and dissolve enemies. His goop can be a little hard to aim, though.

Abilities: Goop Spew

(+) Can break through barriers
(+) Goop can easily trap opponents
(-) A slow, big target

Bombs are common weapons across the roster, but Mouser's usage of them is incredible. He can toss them in any angle at any particular spot, and make the stage into his own death pen. While lacking in jumping power, he has a dangerous shower.

Abilities: Bomb Aim, Bomberade, Trigger

(+) Bombs can be aimed wherever
(+) Excellent overall speed
(-) Poor jumping prowess

Shokora is an unusual character that is able to transform into a Black Cat to get through tiny locations and into a Shopkeeper to use a random attack to attack opponents directly in front of her. With her Black Cat form, she can slip into real small gaps.

Abilities: Transform

(+) Transforming gives many strengths
(+) Surprisingly strong attacks
(-) Standstill transformation leaves her open

Levels

There are a few levels already provided by TimeStrike and Nintendo in the game, which players can play on or edit to their desires through the Level Editor. There is one official level per character in the game. These levels use unique tilesets that can be unlocked by playing any of these levels at least ten times.

Level Description
Mario Bros. House
(Mario)
This is a fairy basic level that consists of a simple two-floor house and a fairly flat backyard with a few trees that can be climbed via vines. The design allows players to easily transverse the environment. Items are plentiful, with many item boxes positioned in various rooms.
Luigi's Mansion
(Luigi)
The haunted Luigi's Mansion is something of a maze, with many ghosts moving about the mansion as the hallways constantly loop. Players need to be careful on floors that automatically move under their feet and around doors that will suddenly close behind unsuspecting players.
Mushroom Kingdom
(Peach)
Taking place atop Peach's Castle, players must brawl to knock players off the top, fighting harsh winds as they attempt to battle in the air. Some boxes positioned atop the top host metal caps or vanish caps that can be used to aid on either staying atop the roof or getting hard to hit.
Sarasaland
(Daisy)
The desert-like Sarasaland features pyramids to climb and towers to ascend as desert winds push through the place, which have the potency to damage players with their heat. They should take shelter in the shadows or search for King Totomesu, whom can emerge from the depths and engage in battle with the players!
Toad Town
(Toad)
Toad Town is a simple, yet really large arena with many buildings that Toads live in. Players can make use of the ability to travel between "layers", able to move up or down at certain areas a la Paper Mario to reach the different ends of Toad Town. Mostly a giant hide n' seek battleground.
Yoshi's Island
(Yoshi)
Yoshi's Island has many spinning platforms and vines to ascend, with the whole level having some really rocky geography and unique maze-like structures that can make it a tough place to battle in at times. If players touch certain parts of the soil, however, they may discover secret paths!
Jungle Hijinxs
(Donkey Kong)
The Jungle Hijinxs are laid out a lot like an actual level, with the "bottom floor" almost being a tile-by-tile copy of the original level. If one were to explore upwards, though, they would find a tile-by-tile clone of some of the stage from Donkey Kong Country Returns! It's like a giant, scrolling labyrinth.
WarioWare, Inc.
(Wario)
In WarioWare, Inc., the players sit on a stage and wait for the WarioWare events to happen! Text that appears on the screen gives a hint as to what players are supposed to do; doing those actions could result in awards and not doing them results in nothing special. It's a minigame fest!
Waluigi Pinball
(Waluigi)
All players are launched out into a giant playing table, where they need to use flippers to bump their way upwards and attack a giant robo-Waluigi while trying to items out from slot machines laid out on the track. One needs to watch out for those giant pinballs, too!
Subcon
(Birdo)
Taking place on a giant flying carpet, players will fly around areas modelled after 1-1, 3-2, and 5-1 in Subcon, occasionally setting off there for players to explore. When the warning sign appears though, the players should take the carpet or suffer death!
Comet Observatory
(Rosalina)
This level makes use of a unique 3D plane, with players moving around a ring around the Comet Observatory, able to look at the sprited observatory from any angle. By taking sling stars, they can land on the 2D plane of the Comet Obseravtory and make use of the low gravity to get around.
Twilight Town
(Vivian)
Creepy Steeple, the setting of Twilight Town here, is where the players will fight, where they can press switches to open up pathways or staircases. Players should not hang outside long, or they'll turn into a pig when the clock strikes! For that, they should be safe inside.
Dark Land
(Dry Bones)
Dark Land has many underground caverns that can be traveled through, players can take the twisted pipe structures to move over the molten magma land. Fierce lava pits threaten people who aren't careful with where they step, and several podoboos are spread throughout the environment.
Bowser's Castle
(Bowser)
Behold one of the largest stages: Bowser's Castle. Players will navigate hazardous chambers, climb lava shafts, travel through boss rooms, and take doors to many sorts of locations in the huge, sprawling layout that Bowser's Castle happens to be.
Airship Horizons
(Larry)
These many airships soaring through the skies are no joke, as they're equipped with many cannons and flamethrowers that can make staying atop them tricky. Still, players want to try and throw their enemies off if they can, as this is no easy arena to keep one's feet on.
New Donk City
(Pauline)
The rather realistic New Donk City is quite urban, with cars that can be ridden and many poles that can be swung up. In the distance, one can make out a copy of Pauline's band performing whatever song is currently being played. The stage uses the Toad Town mechanic of being able to move back and forth between layers.
Evershade Valley
(E. Gadd)
The haunted Evershade Valley is quite similar to Luigi's Mansion in many regards, but it's really cold. Players want to try and stay out of the air if possible as they could potentially freeze to death! Ghosts will pop out everywhere; players need to try and avoid them when possible.
Fawful's Castle
(Fawful)
Fawful's Castle is the single largest level, being a severely altered Peach's Castle with Fawful's branding plastered atop it. The castle is filled with many dangerous Fawful baddies and is the most labyrinth-like in structure. Players need to be careful that they don't drop into a bad trap!
Acorn Plains
(Nabbit)
A simple, over-ground level that takes the aesthetics and design of a classic Super Mario Bros. level, except that there are coins spread all over the horizon. Grab, grab, grab before the native Nabbits steal all the coins ahead of you! Acorn Mushrooms drift in the distance.
Kitchen Island
(Captain Syrup)
Similarly to the Subcon level, players fly around on the SS Tea Cup, which goes around the many worlds that were shown in the world of Kitchen Island from Wario Land. Players don't get to explore the level, but being knocked onto the island will result in instant death.
Forest Maze
(Geno)
This level makes use of the looping aspect players can take onto their levels, with moving left and right and up and down possible in this maze. There is no true path through the maze; players will have to try really hard to find each other before they get hurt too hard by the native Wigglers.
Bianco Hills
(Petey Piranha)
Taking place right in Petey's well, players will have to fight either Petey Piranha himself or a metal copy (if the original is present) in this goopy well. It is the smallest level and is more of a boss fight if anything. Players need to avoid goop and strike his belly as hard as they can.
Wart's Castle
(Mouser)
Wart's Castle is more or less a minefield where many traps lay, with many walls that can be destroyed with the bombs that often spawn right out of pipes. This place is 100% destructable, so players can go nuts trying to break down the entire stage with their abilities!
Golden Pyramid
(Shokora)
The Golden Pyramid is a giant, sprawling level with four chambers that players can travel right into. Themes of paradise, horror, machinery and fun can be explored by the players, although these chambers are often not very long. Hitting the frog clocks will take characters back to the center!

Items

During gameplay, different items may spawn in different item blocks. Here is a list of all the available blocks in the game and all of the items that may spawn from these blocks or on the stage itself.

Blocks

SuperMarioBlastBrickBlock
A "Brick Block". Can be broken by most characters in a "Super" form as well as Wario in any form. Small characters simply bump whatever's atop this block.
QuestionBlock - 2D art

A "? Block" often contains a coin or some sort of item. Once used, it won't be usable again until 15, 30 or 60 seconds have passed, depending on settings.

FlipBlockArtwork
A "Flip Block". If this is hit from underneath, it will simply flip upwards and around, releasing an item along the way. It can then be passed through.
NoteBlock2Dart
This "Note Block" bounces players who get atop it. Jumping right on the block will send players up a considerable distance. It can occasionally release items.
Yellow ! Block
These "! Blocks" hold no item, but are triggered by the pressing of a switch that corresponds to their color. It is rather effective in puzzles.
Glow Block SMWU
"Glow Blocks" light up the atmosphere when they're hit, potentially revealing hidden blocks or objects nearby. They may release items.
Hint block
"Hint Blocks" are often placed next to obstacles that players may not be familiar with or describe their mechanics. A useful addition to puzzle levels.
Deth block
"Death Blocks" are not common and remove a life from any player that hits them! They are very much a hindrance and are common to see in puzzles and traps.

Items

Coin SM64S
Coins are basic elements in the Mario formula, and are spread throughout the levels in Battlefront. Collecting 50 results in temporarily invincibility for the respective collector..
RedCoin SM64S
Red Coins are not as common, but collecting them all will result in the unlocking of a door. They are usually located in hard-to-reach locations or within foes.
Limegreen Shell NSKB
One this shell is fired, it'll zoom around horizontally, smashing into bricks on its way and being a constant threat to enemies and players! A common item that's dangerous to handle.
Mushroom2
The Mushroom, when grabbed, will result in a player getting turned to their "Super" state. Bowser merely becomes able to take more hits. A true life-saver, this item is.
Propellor Mush Build
The Propeller Mushroom allows players to do a big vertical boost into the air, coming back down slowly and gently. Very useful for crossing chasms and bottomless pits.
ACL1UpMushroom
This 1-up Mushroom, a generally rare item, will grant whoever touches it another stock, some points, some coins... it all depends on the objective. A very useful item all-around and worthy of being collected for.
PoisonMushroom2
The lethal Poison Mushroom simply powers down whoever touches this item, and kills those that are below a super state. Can be spawned from "Death Blocks".
FireFlower
When the Fire Flower is collected, the player is able to dish out some flames! These little fireballs can be used to melt ice and burn enemies into coins.
Ice Flower
The Ice Flower grants its beholder with icy fireballs! When these are tossed, they can freeze enemies and small volumes of water and provide temporary bridges across lakes.
SuperLeaf3D
Grabbing the Super Leaf will allow players to gain a Tanooki Tail, with them able to swipe blocks from the sides to open them and trip players to the ground!
CapefeatherMK8DX
Grabbing the Cape Feather enables characters to fly about and over obstacles and enemies. They can also spin their capes around to knock over characters or fly straight down to shake the ground.
Hammer Flower SMEv
Grab this item to obtain the Hammer Suit! Players who behold the power of the Hammer Suit will be able to chuck hammers across the screen. Bowser already has this ability by default.
Boomerangflower
This will grant players who touch this the Boomerang Suit! Players will be able to toss boomerangs that shoot back to the player after being launched.
BlueShell
The Blue Shell a very cool item that allows players to run around defensively in a shell and also guard them from any attack that hits the shell head-on. One of the most useful defense items.
SuperBellSM3DW
The Super Bell, when taken, turns the player into a cat of sorts! They can climb up walls and glide across fair distances with this strange and weird ability.
Bob-omb walking
The Bob-omb will walk around when summoned from a block. When hit, it will suddenly flash red -- players should move out of the way before it explodes! It can break barricades.
SpringboardSmash
The Springboard can be carried around and set down anywhere. Pressing down the jump button while directly on the spring will send characters up a high distance!
P-Switch NSMB2
Should the P Switch be hit, all Coins turn into Brick Blocks and vice versa! P-Switch operated doors may also open. The effects only last about 10 seconds, so players need to keep a move-on!
BluePOWSM3DW
When the POW Block is hit, all enemies on the ground are instantly harmed or powered down! This is a strong item that appears rather rarely.
Mega mushroom
The Mega Mushroom, only found in levels that would be welcoming to its powers, will turn any character huge! They can break blocks for roughly 15 seconds by walking into them and destroy the terrain.
Star
This flashy golden invincibility star grants whoever takes it with 30 seconds of pure invincibility! Any enemy hit by the rainbow-flashing player will be knocked out immediately.
Metal box Wii U
The Metal Box, when collected, gives the player a metallic appearance for a short period of time! Jumps are heavier and speed is slower, but the player is invincible to most hazards.
Vanish box Wii U
Similarly to the Metal Box, the Vanish Box grants its collector the strange power of brief invisibility. While not invincible, players that are invisible can pass through doors and thin walls.
Koopa Clown CarNSMBAS
The Koopa Clown Car is very rare, but it gives anyone who rides is a free ride! It can charge up flames in its mouth, which the player can spit out when it's ready.

Online

It is possible for the player to head online in Super Mario Battlefront, whereas they can host a room and await combatants to join said room, or join a hosted room that's waiting on others to join. Online, up to four players may play against each other in one match, though eight total can participate if the level map size is exclusively set to be large. All matches run at 60FPS, no matter how many players, items, or the like are on screen. Hosts of rooms can choose from the pre-set online maps offered by TimeStrike, or choose their own custom maps for all to battle in. If the host of the room has Rewards enabled, players that come out victorious above everyone else will have be able to choose any item they wish prior to the next match's start. Those that win second and third place (and fourth place in 8-player matches) will receive random "good items". The host can enable free-for-all battles or team battles, depending on their liking.

Online Super Mario Battlefront has a second mode of online player, where four players may work together to construct a course. The map will split into four equal pieces, and each player will be able to possess one part of that map. They may only edit that segment of the map, with the other players working on their own pieces of the maps. Players can use any tools they wish minus custom creations (due to limitations in online player) to construct their part of the map, and can view around the other bits of the map to gain inspiration for what they should build. If any player drops out, another may take their place, but cannot erase anything that the previous participant created, being forced to work off of theirs (but in any way they choose). Once all players are done, they can hit their submit button. Once this occurs, a test battle will occur where there must be at least one victory. If all players are satisfied, they can download the map to their library for them to play around with later.
