WMario & WaLuigi: Quartet Invasion (known as Mario & Luigi RPG 6: Four for One in Japan) is a game in the Mario & Luigi series. The game takes place in both the Mushroom Kingdom and Sarasaland, where Mario, Luigi, Wario and Waluigi are chasing down the evil alien Tatanga in order to rescue Princess Daisy and save both kingdoms and possibly the world.

Story[]

The Kidnapping - Peach's Castle[]

It's Princess Daisy's birthday, and Peach is organizing a party for her in the Mushroom Kingdom. Starlow, Professor E. Gadd, Toadette, Toadbert, and of course Mario, Luigi are invited. Everyone is having fun at Peach's Castle! What could possibly go wrong?

Soon, the cake arrives. A big, towering cake of many layers. Isn't it a little too big? Who cares, it's cake.

Then, Peach commands Luigi to cut it. She gives him a knife, and promptly tells him to be careful around it. Luigi is confident, he knows cutting a cake is easy and he can't screw this up, specially because Daisy is watching him. He approaches the cake, and then...

He cuts a perfect slice! Hooray, Luigi. He gives this slice to Daisy, and she starts eating. Everything is going well... until Daisy complaints about the taste of the cake. What, she doesn't likes strawberries? No, that's not it. In her own words, "the cake tastes like sweat".

Suddenly, the cake bursts, covering everything in meringue and dough. What, why?! What could've possibly done this? The answer is simple: deep inside the cake, two men were hiding, waiting for their opportunity to strike, and it finally came. Enter Wario and Waluigi. After Wario complaints that the space inside the cake was very small and hot and that made him sweat, they both go back to business. And that business is kidnapping Princess Daisy. Taking advantage of the confusion, they take Daisy and flee the castle, forcing the Mario Bros. to chase after them.

Chase Across the Grasslands - Flat Meadows[]

The Bros. arrive outside the castle, which leads to the Flat Meadows, a prairie that also possesses bits of the Toad Town. Unfortunately, they've lost sight of Wario and Waluigi, forcing them to look around in hopes of finding Daisy. Before parting, Professor E. Gadd gifts them a pair of Hammers and the 3D Red Shell and Fire Flower Bros. Attacks to use on their adventure. And so on, Mario and Luigi start their quest in the outskirts of Peach's Castle.

Navigating through the colorful plains full of enemies and some friendly NPCs, the Bros. finally catch up with Wario and Waluigi, where Starlow interrogates them about what they want to do with Daisy. Refusing the explain, the wacky duo engages in a battle with the Mario Bros.

Once defeated, Wario and Waluigi prepare to surrender, but then...

They are stopped by a light beam, leaving a crater between both pairs. And then, from the sky, a mysterious spaceship descends. Whose, you may ask? Well, not other than Tatanga, the evil alien from Sarasaland. Greeting them, Tatanga thanks Wario and Waluigi for their service before loading Daisy into his spaceship. Waluigi asks for their rewards that Tatanga promised, but he declines, reminding them that this was supposed to be a stealth mission but now everyone knows that Daisy has been kidnapped. And with that, Tatanga leaves trough a portal made by him.

Furious, Wario and Waluigi decide to fight Tatanga, so they embark towards Sarasaland, which is just besides Mushroom Kingdom. When Mario and Luigi try to follow them, Wario snatches Starlow away, threatening to hurt her if the keep following. Once the Bros. back off as Starlow recommends, the wacky duo runs away.

Mario and Luigi try to follow them again, but they are stopped by yet another mysterious force. This time, however, it's a magical barrier blocking their paths...

The Heat of a New Realm - Birabuto Kingdom[]

Exhausted, Wario and Waluigi drop on the floor —or rather, sand— as they escape the Mario Bros. Wait, sand? Where are they? Turns out, the Flat Meadows connected to one of Sarasaland's territories, the Birabuto Kingdom, and the wacky duo just arrived at the border. Starlow is furious, berating them for treating a lady this way and demanding to go back to the Mushroom Kingdom. Not caring about Starlow's words, Wario and Waluigi decide to keep advancing, hoping to find the whereabouts of Tatanga. Without much option and refusing to the idea of being left alone in an unknown place, Starlow decides to follow them.

Exploring the sandy and hot desert, the duo and Starlow meet Broque Monsieur, a rather eccentric individual, trapped at the top of a rock. Before he has a chance of explaining himself, Wario and Waluigi are attacked by a pair of Bunbuns. During the battle and understanding that these new enemies can't be hurt with jumps, Broque Monsieur gives them a pair of Mallets, which are rather effective against them. Once the Bunbuns are defeated, Broque Monsieur descends to the ground and thanks them, explaining that, while looking for his dog, he was attacked by those creatures and forced to hide up there. As gratitude, Broque gifts them not only the pair of Mallets, but the Spiny Shell and Ice Flower duo attacks. Broque gives his farewell, continuing the search for his dog.

After solving some puzzles in the sand and advancing to the center of the Kingdom, the duo encounters King Totomesu, a lion sphinx-like creature that is rather aggressive, forcing Wario and Waluigi to fight it and ultimately defeating him.

The Hunt For the Bandit Bug - Mushroom Grove[]

Meanwhile, Mario and Luigi are still at the Flat Meadows with their paths completely blocked off by a magical barrier. Looking for an explanation, the Bros. receive their answer soon enough: a mysterious, purple-looking Magikoopa appears before them. Presenting herself as Kamella, she reveals to be working for Tatanga and says that she "can't let them interfere with Tatanga's Master Plan" before attacking the brothers. Overwhelmed by her magical power, Mario and Luigi are forced to retreat.

Back at Peach's Castle, the brothers explain everything to Peach, E. Gadd, Toadette and Toadbert, including the kidnapping of Starlow at the hands of Wario and Waluigi. Mortified, Peach begs Mario and Luigi to go to Sarasaland in a quest to rescue both girls, recalling that the Mushroom Grove at the north-east of the castle connects to one of its Kingdoms. She also asks them to keep an eye open for Toadiko, who was supposed to show up at the party but never did. Before departing, Toadette gifts them a pair of Badges to use on their adventure, and E. Gadd reunites them with one of their old friends: Stuffwell. With this, the brothers embark towards the Mushroom Grove.

Now at the Mushroom Grove —a massive forest area full of sky-high bioluminescent fungi—, Mario and Luigi find a village of Yoshis living there, who complaint about recently being attacked by a bug stealing their food and friends. Deep inside the forest, the brothers rescue Yoshis trapped in cobwebs and solve puzzles involving mushrooms and the Mole Mario and Mini Mario techniques along with battles against the creatures inhabiting it. Once the last of the Yoshis is rescued, the chief of the village rewards them with the Yoshi Feast attack.

Near the end of the area, Mario and Luigi find a Wiggler chilling around, who they assume is the bug attacking the Yoshis. Furious with this baseless accusation, Wiggler prepares to attack them, but becomes entangled by a cobweb directly shoot at him. A bigger bug than Wiggler appears before Mario and Luigi: Tarantox, which is obviously the one that has been causing trouble for the Yoshis. After a long battle against the multi-legged monster and making peace with the Wiggler, Mario and Luigi enter Sarasaland.

In Search of Treasures... And a Dog - Birabuto Pyramid[]

With King Totomesu defeated, the duo encounters Broque Monsieur again, looking directly at a pyramid. Broque affirms that he saw his dog entering the building, but the pyramid is full of traps and monsters, and asks the duo if they can go and search it for him. Naturally, Wario and Waluigi hesitate, but before they can completely refuse, Broque mentions that the pyramid is also home of various treasures and valuable relics, prompting Wario and Waluigi to accept, obviously more focused on the treasures of the pyramid than the dog.

Now inside, the duo begins its search for the treas— Broque Monsieur's dog. After clearing the first half of the pyramid and obtaining a new Duo Attack —the Dragon Pot for Wario— and a new overworld technique —the Waluigi Cake—, they encounter Broggy, Broque Monsieur's beloved pet. But before they manage to catch it, Broggy flees the scene, entering further into the sandy lair and forcing the duo to chase after it.

After another long exploring session inside the crumbling walls of the abandoned ruin, Wario and Waluigi reach the heart of the pyramid: a sanctuary engulfed in sand with a vortex in the middle and Broggy sitting near it. Before they manage to approach the dog, a massive sandy monster emerges from inside the vortex: Squizzard. Broggy attacks it but to no avail, as Squizzard gives it a good beat up, forcing Wario and Waluigi to fight the creature.

With Squizzard defeated, this coughs up a Pink Toad before exploding. Waking up, the Pink Toad introduces herself as Toadiko, one of Peach's best friends, and explains that she was on her way to Daisy's party when she saw her being dragged away by Tatanga. She followed him across the desert until she was attacked by King Totomesu and had to hide inside the pyramid where she met and befriended Broggy before being eaten by Squizzard, which explains why he was attacking it. Almost falling asleep by her story, Wario and Waluigi ask her if she hasn't seen a treasure inside the ruins. Toadiko, somewhat nervous and evasive, confirms their question, showing what the supposed treasure was: a pair of Badges they can use in battle. With this settled, the duo, Starlow, Toadiko and Broggy exit the pyramid.

How to Be... Cool? - Easton Kingdom[]

The brothers finally arrive at one of Sarasaland's territories: the Easton Kingdom, a peninsula full of ruins of an ancient civilization and Moais. Not sure about what they are supposed to do, Stuffwell recommends them to ask the locals for clues. After encountering some grumpy rocks without nothing of interest to share, Mario and Luigi are approached by a moving Moai with shades. Introducing itself as Hiyoihoi, the statue assures that he posses info about Princess Daisy, but refuses to share it because "they aren't cool enough". After some negotiation, Hiyoihoi accepts to tell them what they want if they prove how cool they can be.

Exploring and navigating the Kingdom, Mario and Luigi complete tasks for Hiyoihoi and the local rocks, rewarding them with "coolness points". Along with learning the Spin Jump technique and obtaining the Drill Shell attack, both brothers complete all the tasks and missions given by the rock people. But before Hiyoihoi accepts that they are cool enough, he gives them one last challenge: defeating him. So then, Mario and Luigi battle with the moving Moai.

With Hiyoihoi defeated, this accepts that they are cool enough to know everything and invites them to his house to tell them about the whereabouts of Daisy. Mario, Luigi and Stuffwell arrive at Hiyoihoi's "house", which is just a big hole on the ground. But before they can ask any questions, Hiyoihoi pushes them inside the abyss, laughing as they fall and hoping that "Lord Tatatanga will be proud of him".

Yet Another Border Crossing - Wet Wet Jungle[]

Now back at the desert, Wario and Waluigi find that Broque Monsieur has installed a shop right outside the pyramid. They reunite him with Broggy, who gives them some items as reward and the permission to use Shop Blocks that he has installed around the Mushroom Kingdom and Sarasaland. Parting, Toadiko asks Wario and Waluigi if they can escort her to Peach's Castle, who immediately refuse. Starlow jumps at her aid, reminding the duo that it's their fault all of this is happening and they don't have any information about Tatanga's location either way. Grumbling, Wario and Waluigi accept Toadiko's request.

Trying to get back from the same path they used before, the quartet finds that it has been blocked off by an inexplicable magical barrier. Wario and Waluigi try to give up, but Toadiko reveals that the Birabuto Kingdom also connects to the Wet Wet Jungle, a tropical rainforest south-east of Peach's Castle. Without much of an option, they decide to cross this unknown territory.

They arrive at the entrance of the aforementioned jungle, but are stopped by Broque Monsieur, who gives Waluigi the Football Missile duo attack because "he felt bad that he was the only one to have just one attack". Confused but not asking any questions, they keep advancing through the rainy and slippery forest, protecting Toadiko from the creatures on it and even obtaining a new technique, the High Jump.

The quartet finds a large and old bridge connecting two areas of the jungle and carefully cross it. Along the way, Toadiko makes an off-hand remark about Tatanga's intentions with Daisy, hoping that "it doesn't has any to do with Sarasaland's power supply". Confused, Wario, Waluigi and Starlow try to know more about this, but are stopped by a creaking sound. Before they have any time to react, the bridge starts to break and crumble from the middle which forces them to run at different directions. Wario and Waluigi end on the other side, but Toadiko and Starlow return to the start of the now destroyed bridge. Refusing to leave Toadiko alone by herself, Starlow and the Pink Toad decide to find another way to reach Peach's Castle and suggests the duo to do the same. Without needing to be told twice, they dispose to advance without both girls.

Traversing the remaining portion of the jungle, the duo finally arrives at what seems like the exit of it, but unfortunately, Starlow and Toadiko are nowhere to be seen. They pretend to not care and keep going, but something on their heads (Wario even refers to it as a mysterious and annoying voice) tells them that they have to search for the girls, which they promptly do.

Earlier than later, they find Starlow and Toadiko hiding inside some bushes, but before they manage to warn them, another (yes, another, but a new one for them) massive bug known as Bugaboom appears, and the duo is forced to battle it.

Defeating the insect, Toadiko hugs both men and thanks them for rescuing her yet again, with Starlow also showing her gratefulness. Making not big deal out of it, Wario and Waluigi escort them towards the now discovered exit.

The Great Escape and Steal - Easton Ruins[]

Falling down the hole, Stuffwell activates its Parachute Mode, grabbing Mario and Luigi before they hit the ground and managing to have a safe landing... well, mostly, as they are now trapped inside the cave. Failing to establish a connection with Peach's Castle and Professor E. Gadd, Stuffwell advises that their best option is to search for an exit. Agreeing, the Brothers start exploring the mysterious cavern.

Soon enough, they discover the ruins of an even older civilization buried under the Easton Kingdom, full of strange carvings and vestiges that not even Stuffwell manages to decode. Not paying much attention to this, Mario and Luigi continue to navigate through the ruins, using the newly acquired Side Drill technique for opening their paths and managing to find Luigi's old vacuum which transforms into the Poltergust 3000 Attack (seriously, how did it end there?)

The brothers find themselves at the heart of the ruins, where a mysterious object lies in front of them: a floating, golden-shined Moai head. Searching on his database, Stuffwell finds out that this is one of the ancient relics of Sarasaland, and explains to the brothers that each Kingdom posses one of them. These relics are extremely valuable and must not be touched, as they are the main source of spirit energy for the country. The Brothers decide to leave it alone, but before they can leave, they are greeted by a new presence: a big and pudgy Monty Mole-esque creature known as Major Burrows. Moving them out of his way, Major Burrows steals the relic and flees, prompting the Brothers to persecute this new foe.

After a long chase among the remaining structures and caverns of the ruins, Major Burrows grows tired of the pair, instigating a fight against him which, naturally, Mario and Luigi manage to win. After the crushing defeat, Major Burrows is ready to surrender the relic, but it's stopped by an unknown force: enter Kamella, who snatches the relic away before berating Burrows for giving up so easily and almost losing it. With this, Kamella fires a ray at Burrows, sending him away to "his own galaxy". Stuffwell asks what is she planning to do with the relic, but Kamella refuses to answer, only mentioning that it's essential for "Tantanga's Master Plan" before fading away. Without much option, Mario and Luigi continue to advance, eventually finding an exit to the cavern.

Tatanga Appears Again - Back to Peach's Castle[]

The Brothers surface, encountering themselves at the ocean. Analyzing, Stuffwell deduces that they are in another of Sarasaland's territories: the Muda Kingdom, a massive archipelago full of isles and beaches. Stuffwell manages to establish a connection with the castle, their call being responded by Professor E. Gadd. Mario explains everything to the professor, including that Kamella stole one of the ancient artifacts of Sarasaland. With this, E. Gadd understands everything: Daisy is the only one capable of awakening the true power of the four Artifacts, and if all of them use their full potential in a single place, catastrophic things may happen not only to both Kingdoms, but to the world. Knowing that they are in the Muda Kingdom, E. Gadd hurries the Brothers to look for the artifact of that Kingdom before it's too late, but as he is saying this, something very bad happens at the Castle, losing the connection...

At the same time, Wario, Waluigi, Starlow and Toadiko arrive at Peach's Castle, which is being attacked by a cluster of Koopa Army mobs. After they defeat them, Starlow laments that this is the worst time to be attacked by Bowser's minions.

"Did someone mention the name of a magnificent king?"

Looking behind them, the quartet finds Bowser staring at the group and the Castle. With a gift in hand, Bowser affirms that he hasn't done anything bad "the past two days" in hopes of being invited to Daisy's party, but since the invitation never arrived, he decided to show up anyway. Bowser kicks one of the "Goombas" attacking the castle which puffs out in a cloud of smoke, showing it to be a fake of his army. Bowser demands to know what's going on and the whereabouts of everyone else, but before anyone has the change of giving him a coherent answer, they are interrupted by a malignant presence descending from the sky.

Tatanga greets them once again, revealing to be the one responsible for invading the castle. When questioned about it, Tatanga says that he had to look for "something very important that Daisy may have left in the Castle", but to no avail. Bowser keeps asking for an explanation about what's going on which makes Tatanga grow tired of him, firing a ray beam towards the Koopa King and sending him flying away, swearing revenge. With this, Tatanga decides that he also had enough of Wario, Waluigi and the others and summons King Lakitu from a portal before disappearing through it instigating a battle.

After defeating the oversised Lakitu, Starlow enters the Castle to look for Peach, but she only encounters Toadette, Toadbert and E. Gadd, which means Peach has disappeared. When Toadbert tries to attack Wario and Waluigi, Starlow stops the Blue Toad, telling him that "they are now on their side... mostly" and want to stop Tatanga as well. E. Gadd informs that he just talked to Mario and Luigi, revealing Tatanga's plan of stealing Sarasaland's relics and using them to do havoc, which causes a small panic among the group, specially with Toadiko who seems the most preoccupied about it. As they are about to give up and blindly search for clues, a Toad in winter clothing arrives at the scene, telling them that he just saw a pair of "Goombas" carrying Peach through the Chillwind Plains towards a massive factory that just appeared. With the whereabouts of Peach revealed, Starlow hurries Wario and Waluigi to rescue her, and before they have the opportunity to refuse, reminds them that they are still criminals for kidnapping Daisy and can be delivered to the authorities. Knowing what's best for them, Wario and Waluigi embark towards the Chillwind Plains, not before receiving the Chain Chomp Rodeo duo Attack from the professor.

Water Wherever You Sea - Muda Kingdom[]

Having no way of contacting Peach's Castle again, Mario, Luigi and Stuffwell decide that the best course of action is going back to the Mushroom Kingdom to see what's going on, also hoping to encounter the relic of the Muda Kingdom along the way so it doesn't falls in Tatanga's hands. However, the Brothers soon realize that they are trapped in one of the Muda Kingdom's islands and they have no way of escaping by normal means, so Stuffwell suggests making a boat using the multiple resources that the island has to offer.

Traveling along the big mass of floating earth, Mario and Luigi pass by beaches, jungles and cliffs collecting wood, plants and all kinds of things for making their boat, not without help of their newly acquired abilities: the Bros. Ball technique and the Bye-Bye Cannon Attack.

But the most important thing that they manage to get is, of course, the relic of the Muda Kingdom: a golden fish head floating above an altar in the middle of the jungle. The Brothers take this relic with them so it's safe and away from evil hands. Finally completing their boat, they get prepared to sail... when a massively creepy-looking fish skeleton known as Kingfin smashes and destroys their construction, at the same time eating the gold fish head that they were protecting.

After battling and defeating the monster, Kingfin spits the relic towards the ocean before perishing and becoming an immobile carcass. Realizing that the relic is now lost on the sea, the Brothers give up on finding it and instead decide to use Kingfin's body as an improvised water transportation. Mounting the head of skeleton and using Stuffwell as a flag, they embark in a travel by water towards the Mushroom Kingdom.

Mechanical Warming - Chillwind Plains[]

Wario and Waluigi reach the Chillwind Plains: a big frozen tundra south-west of Peach's Castle that, for some reason, is slowly melting. The aforementioned Toad in winter clothing attributes this to the factory and pleads for Wario and Waluigi to shut it down or else the entire Toad tribe living in there will disappear. Without much of a choice and the factory being their destination anyway, they agree.

Soon they manage to discover that the reason most of the ice is melting is because of some strange machinery scattered around the plains that keeps emanating heat. Travelling along the zone to reach the factory, Wario and Waluigi manage to destroy every single one of those artifacts, stooping the warming of the Chillwind Plains and saving the Toad village. As a thanks, the chief of the tribe decides to reward them with the Bull Pot Duo Attack.

Just when they reach the factory's main gate and are about to enter the building, the Duo are stopped dead on their tracks by no other than Kamella, who asks what the heck are they planning. When they explain that they are going to rescue the Princesses and get revenge on Tatanga, Kamella only laughs and congratulates them for trying, but proclaims that their journey ends there. The Magikoopa summons both Sorbetti and Baron Brrr to take care of them, resulting in a battle against the two frozen beings. After defeating them, Wario and Waluigi proceed to enter the factory.

A Faithful Encounter - Tatanga's Factory[]

Now inside the mysterious factory, Wario and Waluigi get a glimpse of what's being build in there: the mechanical parts of an even bigger metal structure along with the blueprints of what looks like... a robot? Getting a bad feeling about this, Starlow urges Wario and Waluigi to look for Peach and shut down the factory along the way, to which the Duo agrees.

Meanwhile, Mario and Luigi arrive at the coasts of the Mushroom Kingdom —more precisely, the frozen waters of the Chillwind Plains— via Kingfin's body, where they notice the massive factory that lies besides them. Having their paths blocked off by walls of ice, Stuffwell suggests to explore the factory in hopes of finding an exit towards Peach's Castle. And thus, Mario and Luigi enter the building from a different entrance than the one Wario and Waluigi used.

While Wario and Waluigi explore the enemy-infested assembling lines and more industrial parts of the place, Mario and Luigi pass along the more lonely control rooms and warehouses pressing buttons, pulling levers and pushing boxes on their way, indirectly helping the wacky duo to navigate the factory by creating new paths and removing obstacles. Wario and Waluigi also manage to obtain two new techniques: the Waluigi Grab and the Jet Pot.

Eventually, both the Mario Bros. and the Wacky Duo come face-to-face, encountering each other near the end of the building. Before they get prepared to attack each other, Starlow steps out to defuse the situation by explaining everything to Mario, Luigi and Stuffwell. With this, both trios agree to work with each other to rescue both Princesses and take down Tatanga, helping each other to cross the remaining sections of the factory until they reach the final room.

Here, they encounter Princess Peach trapped inside an electrified cage. She's glad to see everyone (well, not that much about Wario and Waluigi) but seems very agitated and tells them they should flee since "everything was a trap". Before they have any chance to ask questions, two strange helmet-like machines appear from the ceiling and fall on Mario and Luigi's heads, controlling them. Their brainwashed selves then start a battle with Wario and Waluigi, where the Wacky Duo miraculously manages to defeat the Brothers and destroy the mind-controlling devices.

After releasing Peach from her prison, the Princess explains that her capture was just a decoy and distraction while Tatanga finished what was being constructed inside the factory. The group suggest to shut down the production, but it's too late: the building starts to shake uncontrollably and the floor begins to open, prompting everyone to flee towards a new exit that just opened. What could possibly be happening...?

The group manages to get outside the factory safely, but their tranquility doesn't lasts for too long as they see what all that shaking was about: a massive, kilometer-wide metal fortress appears from below the cold waters of the Chillwind Plains and elevates itself to the sky, embarking towards Sarasaland.

Naturally, they are horrified by this sight, especially when Tatanga appears and taunts them for their efforts. When confronted and asked for his motivations, Tatanga keeps himself ambiguous, only slightly alluding to a revenge an instead making himself clear that he's going to conquer the world with the relics of Sarasaland, all of this before flying towards his new fortress. Still confused and without much to do about the current situation, the group returns to Peach's Castle to plan their next move.

The New Plan - Peach's Castle Again[]

Back at home, Peach explains to everyone present that Tatanga most likely wants to take revenge for an event that happened many years ago, telling the following story:

"When Daisy was a baby and Sarasaland was a small and humble kingdom still governed by her parents, Tatanga —who was a resident— proposed the idea of using the relics of the kingdom as weapons to conquer and expand their territories, claiming that there was much hidden potential for them and could be capable of making history. Naturally, this idea was quickly denied by Daisy's parents, and when Tatanga tried to steal the relics for himself to enact his plan, he was caught and exiled to space, where he probably planned vengeance for years until today."

Knowing what Tatanga is capable of doing and having no way to reach his space station where Daisy is surely being kept, Peach suggests finding the other relics in Sarasaland before it's too late, intending to keep their power away from Tatanga and use them to bring down its fortress and rescue Daisy. Too bad they don't have any of them yet... or do they?

Somewhat nervous, Toadiko hesitatingly pulls out something out of her pocket: a golden-shined mini-pyramid, being none other than the relic of the Birabuto Kingdom. Toadiko claims that she found it inside the pyramid when she was trapped in there, and decided to keep it "just in case", showing what the real treasure of the pyramid was. Expecting a berating for doing something so reckless, Toadiko is surprised when everyone (well, except for Wario and Waluigi who are angry about Toadiko lying about the treasure) congratulates her for thinking that far ahead. Great! Now they have a relic on their hands...!

Well, not for long, because before has any chance to react, a cloud of purple smoke leaves everyone blinded and the relic is taken away from Toadiko. Who's this? Kamella and Tatanga's forces?!

"GWAHAHA! So that's how it is?"

They recognize this laughter instantly. It's not Tatanga or Kamella. It's Bowser! Accompanied by Kamek and the Elite Trio, showing that Corporal Paraplonk was the one who snatched the relic away from Toadiko's hands.

"I came back here to find out who that purple weirdo was and take my revenge, but it seems like I learned something even more interesting. I'm going to blast down that ugly fortress where he's hiding and then take these relics for myself. Gwahaha!"

Bowser and his henchmen get away before anyone is capable of stopping them thanks to Kamek's magic.

Troubled and now with another problem on their backs, the group decides that the best course of action is splitting again, with Mario and Luigi in charge of recovering the stolen relic from Bowser while Wario and Waluigi travel to Sarasaland to find the other two. Stuffwell also suggests to first search for the Muda Kingdom relic that was lost at the ocean during Kingfin's battle, with Wario grumpily claiming that he doesn't likes water or showers. And with this, their new quest begins.

The Path to Bowser's Castle - Back Highlands[]

Now outside of Peach's Castle, Stuffwell analyzes and suggests that the shortest —and probably only— way to reach Bowser's Castle is traversing the Back Highlands, a mountainous area behind (get it?) Peach's Castle. To do this, Mario and Luigi learn the Ball Hop technique just outside the mountain, which allows them to explore the rest of the zone.

While exploring cliffs and caves full of enemies as well as tracking Kamek's magic trail thanks to Stuffwell, the Brothers come across a trio of winged Koopas who claim to have seen Mario and Luigi "somewhere before", but can't really put their finger on it. Brushing that aside, the Koopas affirm that they know the exact path towards the Koopa King's lair, but refuse to say more since telling that kind of information "would cost them their wings at Bowser's own hands".

However, just before Mario and Luigi decide to blindly look for it by themselves, the Paratroopas propose them an exchange for the data: to free their territory of a monster that recently appeared at the mountains and maybe clear the rockfalls it caused on its path. Accepting the deal, Mario and Luigi explore the rest of the Back Highlands before finally encountering the creature the Koopas were talking about: Rollodillo.

After an exhausting battle against the rocky monster, Mario and Luigi get back for their reward, which the Koopa Paratroopas hesitatingly tell the Bros., only asking to keep silent about where they got said info. Promising to maintain the secret and obtaining the Metal Mario attack from them, the Brothers continue their path towards Bowser's Castle.

The Blocked Bridge - Charcoal Summit[]

The Brothers reach Back Highland's summit, showing that the mountain is, in fact, an active volcano full of lava. What's more, Bowser's Castle is in front of them! Imposing and resting above a pool of magma inside a crater. The Brothers, naturally, decide to take a careful approach towards their arch-nemesis' lair.

Soon they reach the fortress, but unfortunately the bridge isn't lowered and they can't enter by any means. That's when the Koopa Paratroopa Trio appears again and offers the group info about how to enter Bowser's Castle, but with another condition: stop the massive lava flow that suddenly started not long ago and is threatening their home at the lower part of the mountain. Without much option they agree, and embark in finding the source of all the magma that suddenly appeared at the volcano.

While exploring the area, Mario and Luigi discover the apparent fountains of said problems: a garden full of fiery flowers that release lava constantly, and a lake of magma full of strange rock-like eggs that bounce up and down, splashing the hot material across. With the help of their freshly acquired Pump Mario technique, Mario and Luigi manage to extinguish both sources of hot and dangerous liquid. However, this isn't an easy victory, as doing that managed to anger both guardians of the destroyed lairs: Fiery Dino Piranha and King Kaliente, respectively. So, the Brothers are forced to fight this particular duo in a battle packed with heat.

After dealing with the fiery beings, the Koopa Paratroopa Trio are impressed and show their respects for Mario and Luigi. Complying with their part of the deal, the Paratroopas accept to reveal the extremely well-kept secret about how to enter Bowser's Castle... by showing a big lever that was slightly hidden behind one of the rocks in front of the bridge. Yay?

The Paratroopas thank them one last time and return to their home. Mario, Luigi and Stuffwell decide to not talk about the topic and pull the lever, lowering the bridge to Bowser's Castle and permitting the access to it.

Deep Searching - Muda Seabed[]

Back at Wario and Waluigi, the Wacky Duo decides to follow Stuffwell's advice and go to the Muda Kingdom, dragging Starlow along after she suggests staying at the Castle to guard Peach and failing to convince them, with Peach even encouraging Starlow to go with them "just to be sure they don't do anything bad".

For this, the Duo goes again to the Chillwind Plains and use Kingfin's body to sail towards the watery Kingdom, arriving in the blink of an eye. Now there, they follow a desolated path only accessible by the use of their own techniques before reaching a peninsula with a water vortex in the middle. Hoping for the best, Wario and Waluigi jump at this whirlpool and get access to the Muda Seabed.

Traversing the beautiful coral reefs, dark caverns and dismal sunken ships of this area proves to be a tough challenge for the Mario Bros' knock offs, but at last, they manage to demonstrate that nothing can stop them, specially when the previously lost relic of the Muda Kingdom shows itself in front of them before being swept away by the currents of the ocean, which the Wacky Duo chases without breaking a sweat (not that they could underwater anyway...)

But of course, one last challenge appears before them when the relic is almost on their grasp: a big angry seahorse accompanied by its guardian —a strange eye-like entity— known as Dragonzamasu and Tamao push them away, claiming that they're going to take the relic for themselves and give it to Lord Tatanga. Without much of an option, Wario and Waluigi engage in a battle against this pair, ultimately defeating them and gaining the relic for themselves.

Pleasing a "God" - Chai Kingdom[]

Now with a relic on their hands, Wario and Waluigi finish exploring the last remaining bit of the underwater zone before resurfacing in a small coast. After advancing some more, the duo discovers that they're in the final area of Sarasaland: the Chai Kingdom, a Chinese-styled town with some friendly —and not so friendly— NPCs and, of course, monsters roaming its streets and buildings. Realizing that the last relic must be hidden somewhere in there, Wario, Waluigi and Starlow decide to talk with the locals in an effort to attain information about its whereabouts.

After dealing with some of the hostile people and creatures inhabiting the town and obtaining the Wario Glade technique along the way, Wario and Waluigi come across a friendly woman known as Broque Madame who decides to willingly share info with them, only with the condition of cleaning her basement from all the Little Mousers living in there. With this accomplished, Broque Madame compensates them with the Whack-a-monster attack and tells the duo that recently a Godly Dragon appeared "from space" and decided to take the mantle of the town's guardian, residing along with the relic in a temple atop of a hill. Of course, the duo take this person as being mental, but Starlow thanks her and opines that, even if Broque Madame's story was "somewhat unconvincing", that's the only lead they have and should follow it, prompting a search for the mysterious temple the lady was talking about.

Advancing some more while crossing avenues, alleys and even a small market, the wacky duo reaches a set of stairs that lead to the top of a hill. Still incredulous about this, they decide to climb them and reach a temple only to find out that, effectively, a big dragon has decided to take residence in there. Introducing itself as Gobblegut, he lets them know that Tatanga sent him to steal the relic of the Chai Kingdom, but the local people started viewing him as a God and since he didn't cared that much about Tatanga's plan, Gobblegut decided to reside in the town and live as a deity while receiving free food and gifts, much to his pleasure. However, Gobblegut isn't that easily convinced about yielding the relic and instead, sends Wario and Waluigi to a fetch quest across the Chai Kingdom to satisfy the big dragon's needs.

Completing Gobblegut's requests, he becomes pleased enough to willingly give the relic —a golden-shined mini-pagoda— at the duo, but before it can fall on their hands, a strange entity with the appearance of a cloud snatches it. This cloud, known as Biokinton, calmly informs them that the relic belongs to Tatanga now and its mission is to destroy them. Gobblegut tries to get the relic back, claiming that Wario and Waluigi earned it, but Biokinton "rains" an strange, multi-colored liquid at Gobblegut's face, brainwashing the dragon and forcing it to engage in a battle with the duo, being assisted by Biokinton itself during this fight.

After freeing Gobblegut from its brainwashing, the dragon gives one last hit to the cloud being, making it explode and recovering the Chai Kingdom relic which he gives at Wario and Waluigi as a thanks for everything. And with this, the duo has recovered two of the four relics of Sarasaland.

Child Trouble, Nanny Problems - Bowser's Castle[]

Mario and Luigi find themselves in the very familiar scenery of Bowser's Castle, full of lava pits, monsters and the Koopa King's signature decoration. In need of a clue, the Brothers don't have to look that much before overhearing the Elite Trio talking about a mission to invade Tatanga's fortress using Bowser's "latest-technology airship". Considering this as an opportunity, Mario and Luigi decide to search for the stolen relic and aboard said airship to reach Tatanga, save Daisy and recover the relic that Kamella stole in the Easton Kingdom.

Unfortunately, this doesn't goes at smoothly as they expected when Kamek encounters the Brothers and complains about them for being a headache. Just when Kamek is preparing himself to battle Mario and Luigi, a sudden shout is heard at the distance...

"Kamek! Where are my toys?!"

An infuriated Bowser Jr. appears behind Mario, Luigi and Kamek, berating the latter for running late.

"Since daddy won't let me accompany him to his invasion and he put you in charge of me, the least you can do when I order something is to do it as soon as possible!"

Literally rubbing his temples, Kamek groans and decides to take Bowser Jr. to his toy vault, but not before casting a series of spells inside the castle to hinder the brother's progress, even making a reference to the fact that he did something similar in a previous castle of Bowser.

Not letting this stop them, Mario and Luigi slowly but surely manage to solve the castle's puzzles and disrupt Kamek's magic by clearing away its spells, even managing to encounter the Static Carpet attack in one of the rooms blocked off by them. And, fortunately, the brothers manage to reach the airship the Elite Trio was talking about, being loaded with members of the Koopa Army and, quite unexpectedly, the stolen relic from Sarasaland. Mario and Luigi get prepared to aboard it, but then...

"I said I'm going! I don't wanna get bored in here while daddy takes all the fun for himself."

The plumbers see how Bowser Jr. is angrily stomping towards the airship's entrance while Kamek is trying to stop him, not wanting to get in trouble with Bowser for allowing his son to enter the battleship. Just when Bowser Jr. is about to get on board, Kamek notices Mario and Luigi and, instead of getting angry, the Magikoopa happily greets them before proposing Bowser Jr. to watch him fight the Brothers in hopes of distracting him and allow the ship to take off.

Bowser Jr. thinks about this for a moment and agrees, but with the condition of battling the Mario Bros. too, as "watching from the sidelines would be really boring". Kamek attempts to persuade Bowser Jr. to stay away from the fight, since him getting hurt would also be troublesome for the Magikoopa, but this isn't enough to convince the son of the Koopa King who charges at the brothers, starting a battle against him and his caretaker.

After defeating the two Koopas, Kamek uses what's left of his strength to carry Bowser Jr. towards the infirmary, not caring anymore about the brothers and cursing them before departing. And with this, Mario and Luigi get a free path to Bowser's Airship.

Stowaways - Bowser's Airship[]

As soon as Mario and Luigi enter the ship of their arch-nemesis, this takes off, leaving them hundreds of feet in the air. Next destination: Tatanga's monstrous spatial fortress.

In the meantime, the brothers decide to search for the stolen relic, exploring both the outside of the airship as well as the interiors of it, which are infested by members of the Koopa Troop preparing themselves before reaching their destination. But of course, none of these Mooks manage to be as important as the well-known Elite Trio, which Mario and Luigi encounter in one of the many rooms that make up the airship.

When confronted for answers about the relic, the Trio, of course, refuses to provide any. Yep, not a single one. Even when Private Goomp starts babbling how they're not going to tell the Mario Bros about the relic hidden inside Bowser's room and the spare key to said room that only the Elite Trio is allowed to carry. Private Goomp is very clear about this, specially when Sergeant Guy kicks him while Corporal Paraplonk faceplants on the floor. With no other option and knowing that their promotions are in danger again, the Trio flees the scene, prompting Mario and Luigi to follow them.

Traversing the rest of the airship while evading the Elite Trio's traps and attempts to slow the them down, Mario and Luigi finally manage to catch up with all three members of Bowser's army. Cornered, they ask themselves why were they running in the first place, affirming that they've been honing their skills since the last time they were defeated. With a boost in confidence, the Trio begins a fight with the Mario Bros which, of course, they lose.

Celebrating their victory, Mario and Luigi inspect the defeated Trio... only to notice that they don't have a key with them. Corporal Paraplonk gets up, mocking the Bros and revealing that they were deceived: they didn't have a key and were only making time while the airship arrived to its destination. Sergeant Guy snickers and Private Goomp joins Paraplonk to laugh at the Bros, declaring that they were stupid enough to believe that they had the key when, in fact, it was left behind in the very same room they met for the first time...!

"I said a bit too much again, didn't I?" says Goomp while Paraplonk faceplants and Guy kicks him. After that, the Trio succumbs to the beating they just received, lying on the floor motionlessly.

Mario and Luigi return to the previous room where they encountered the Trio and manage to find the key behind a bed, using it on Bowser's supposed room. They enter, and...

...a massive cage drops from the ceiling, trapping them.

"GWAHAHA! Fools! Did you really think it would be that easy to infiltrate and steal my treasure? You are dealing with the great King Bowser!"

Bowser appears right in front of them, taunting their efforts while holding the stolen relic. And to put the cherry on top, the airship stops moving.

"I would like to deal with you, but it seems like we've just arrived. Don't worry, I'll take care of your ugly faces once I collect all the treasures and conquer the world. GWAHAHA!"

Saying this, Bowser gets out of the room, leaving the brothers trapped and without escape.

Stairway to Space - Chai Tower[]

With a new relic on their hands, Wario, Waluigi and Starlow begin to celebrate, but their joy doesn't last long when suddenly a barrage of missiles starts to rain down directly at them. Fortunately, Gobblegut manages to shield the heroes with his body, giving them the opportunity to notice the source of the attack: Tatanga's Space Station hoovering above the Chai Kingdom.

Gobblegut tries to fly towards the fortress, but Starlow stops him and suggests that instead he should stay to protect the Chai people from Tatanga's invasion and let Wario and Waluigi take care of the station, to which they hesitatingly agree. Gobblegut then says that the least he can do is carry them towards Tatanga's lair, but doing so from such a low height would be too risky as the bombs continue to fall, so he asks the Duo to climb the Chai Tower —a sacred temple and ritual site just behind Gobblegut— so he can take take them from the top floor towards the station.

Now inside the temple, Wario and Waluigi notice that the once sacred place is, in fact, haunted and full of paranormal creatures. Relieved because Luigi isn't with them and thus she doesn't has to calm him down, Starlow hurries the Duo to climb the tower and meet with Gobblegut

After climbing floor after floor and solving the puzzles of the tower along the way, Wario and Waluigi reach the top. Just before they can get to the roof, though, a rock-like ghost entity known as Bouldergeist manages to block their path, acting as the final obstacle the Duo must overcome before being able to use Gobblegut as their only way to reach Tatanga's Space Station, which they achieve in no time thanks to the dragon's efforts.

Antagonists[]

Gameplay[]

The overall gameplay is almost the same as previous entries in the franchise, though with two new characters in the story, Wario and Waluigi. As always, Mario and Luigi are controlled with the A Button and B Button buttons, while the new pair is controlled with X Button and Y Button, respectively. Much like the brothers, Wario and Waluigi possess abilities used in the overworld for further exploration and advancement in the story.

The game takes place in both the Mushroom Kingdom and Sarasaland, meaning that there are two worlds to explore. Both duos can visit and explore the two Kingdoms, although there are areas only reachable by a specific pair.

Hard Mode from Dream Team also makes a return, featuring stronger enemies and bosses, a limit of ten per item, and even slightly altering every dungeon's layout and their puzzles to make them more complex. Unlike Dream Team's Hard Mode, it is unlocked from the beginning without needing to complete the game on Normal Mode first.

Battle System[]

To start a battle, Mario, Luigi, Wario or Waluigi must touch an enemy or perform a First Strike by jumping or hitting the enemy with their hammers/mallets in the overworld. Since the game is a turn-based RPG, the player and enemies take turns attacking each other. There are five attacks categories: Jump, Hammer/Mallet (Mario and Luigi or Wario and Waluigi, respectively), Bros/Duo Attacks (same as Hammer/Mallet), Item, and Flee. If the player loses a battle and tries again, the Hint option appears, which gives certain clues about the enemies' attacks and weakness. In addition, the Level-Up Roulette makes a return, allowing the option of raising specific stats after leveling-up.

Mario & Luigi's Battle System[]

As mentioned, Mario and Luigi can start a battle by jumping, striking or simply touching an enemy. The Bros. battle system remains almost untouched from previous titles. They must jump, hit and defeat enemies while avoiding the attacks of these through counter-attacks.

The badge system makes a return after its absence from Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam. It works identically as its predecessor in Mario & Luigi: Dream Team.

During chase sequences in boss battles, Mario and Luigi can also use the following moves:

  • Stuffwell Shooter, in which the Bros uses Stuffwell's implanted ray beam to continuously shoot at the bosses or their objects. They must pass Stuffwell and take their turns at shooting since the drawback from it makes the Bros tired.
  • Stuffwell Trampoline, which is identical to Trampoline Guard in Paper Jam. In this version, Stuffwell unfolds itself to create a bouncy pseudo-bed which the Brothers use to reflect various attacks performed by the bosses.

Wario & Waluigi's Battle System[]

The battles for the wacky duo are nearly identical to the Brothers'. However, there are some differences:

  • Wario can only launch a single jump, unlike Mario, Luigi and Waluigi who can use a Double Jump while attacking. However, this jump results in Wario creating a shockwave which damages all enemies half the damage of the attack except for airborne enemies. Additionally, if Wario attacks the aforementioned airborne enemies, the shockwave will not be created.
  • Speaking of airborne enemies, thanks to his height, Waluigi has the ability to hit them with his mallet, an action otherwise impossible for Mario, Luigi and Wario.
  • Unlike Mario and Luigi's Hammers and Wario's Mallet, Waluigi's Mallet is swung sideways if he attacks with it, mimicking a racket. When executing an "Excellent" mallet strike with Waluigi, the affected enemy will be ejected at the opposite side of the battlefield (for example, if the enemy was closer to the background, it will be launched at the foreground and vice versa), potentially hitting other enemies in its path for half the damage of the original attack.
  • While jumping during a counterattack, Wario can inflate himself to flutter and stay longer in the air, much like Paper Mario from the previous entry.
  • Like Wario, Waluigi has a new way to evade attacks. Sometimes, Waluigi must crouch to avoid certain attacks from enemies, similarly to Bowser in Bowser's Inside Story. This is possible by moving down the Left Stick. Staying crouched for too long will make Waluigi tired, so he can't stay in that position as long as he pleases.
  • During chase sequences in boss battles, Wario and Waluigi can use Starlow to float and stay longer in the air, like the Aeroplane Guard in the previous entry. They can also launch her towards bosses like a boomerang, much like the Boomerang Guard also from the previous entry.

Status Effects[]

Status effects can be caused by enemy attacks, items, badges, Bros/Duo Attacks, or the attributes of equipped gear. Some increase/decrease Mario, Luigi, Wario and Waluigi's stats and some them from attacking. Those which raise and lower stats will stack with all other status effects with the exception of raising a currently lowered stat (or vice versa). All of these effects can be cured with a Refreshing Herb.

Special Attacks[]

This time, Special Attacks are divided in two categories: Bros Attacks (for Mario & Luigi), and Duo Attacks (for Wario & Waluigi). A * means the attack is obligatorily obtained in the story. If it isn't, it usually means the Attack is confined behind a secret area or an incomplete task in the main story.

Differences from other Mario & Luigi games[]

  • A Wiggler isn't battled as a boss. This is lampshaded by one of the Wigglers living in the Mushroom Grove.
  • This is the only Mario & Luigi game whose last area isn't a castle.
  • This game doesn't has a particular theme for some of the enemies encountered, unlike previous entries which had Bean-themed enemies, Shroobified enemies, Fawfulized enemies, Dreamy enemies, and Paper enemies, respectively.
    • However, one could count the Super Mario Land's creatures originating from Sarasaland as the main enemy theme of the game.
  • Bowser isn't a recurring boss, only being battled once at the end. However, he still acts as the Final Boss of the game like all previous Mario & Luigi titles.

References to other games[]

  • Donkey Kong: During their visit to Tatanga's Factory, Mario and Luigi traverse a zone full of rolling barrels in one of its warehouses.
  • Super Mario Bros.: Part of Bowser's Castle theme is a cover of the castle theme from this game, while part of the Underground theme appears as a fragment of the Easton Ruins theme. When dealing with the Elite Trio aboard Bowser's Airship, Private Goomp tries to divert the Mario Bros. attention by yelling "Your relic is another airship!", a reference to the iconic Toad's catchphrase used at the end of each world.
  • Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels: A vendor in the Chai Kingdom market may attempt to sell a Poison Mushroom at Wario and Waluigi, which reduces their HP and DP to 1 if they accept it.
  • Super Mario Bros. 2: Albatosses, Autobombs and Cobrats debut as enemies. Inside the Birabuto Pyramid are statues resembling Tryclyde, while Whales similar to the ones in this game appear in the Muda Kingdom as platforms, serving the same purpose they had in Super Mario Bros. 2. The farms of the Yoshi Village in the Mushroom Groove have vegetables resembling the ones originating here. Phantos also appear as obstacles inside the Chai Tower, pursuing Wario and Waluigi when they grab the keys used to advance further into the dungeon.
  • Super Mario Bros. 3: Blooper Nannies, Fire Snakes, Flame Chomps, Hot Feet, Pile Driver Micro-Goombas and Rocky Wrenches debut as enemies in this game, while Munchers act as obstacles for Wario and Waluigi during their visit to the Wet Wet Jungle. Bowser's Airship layout is clearly inspired by the airship levels of this game, and Para-Beetles acts as platforms for Mario and Luigi while exploring said airship in a similar manner to World 5-6. Bowser Statues with a similar design to the ones in Super Mario Bros. 3 are found all over Bowser's Castle, though they are harmless and only serve as a decoration.
  • Super Mario Land: Princess Daisy, Tatanga and the country of Sarasaland with its respective kingdoms make their series debut here, with every enemy originating from that game appearing as enemies in this one. The four kingdoms' themes are remixes of the themes they had in Super Mario Land 2, though their second dungeons (Pyramid, Ruins, Seabed and Tower, respectively) have different ones.
  • Super Mario World: Blarggs, Bony Beetles, Dino-Torches, Fishin' Boos, Hotheads and Mega Moles debut as enemies in this game. When trying to come up with a solution about the attack on their community, one of the Yoshis of the Mushroom Grove suggests "moving back to Dinosaur Land". The "Course Clear" fanfare is remixed into Mario and Luigi's victory theme after each battle. Baby Yoshis also make an appearance during the Yoshi Feast Bro Attack.
  • Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins: Wario makes his official series debut in here. Part of the Chai Tower theme is a cover of the Pumpkin Zone stage. Wario and Waluigi's theme incorporates parts of Mario's Castle during Wario's takeover. The Moon from the Space Zone makes a cameo in the background of Tatanga's Space Station.
  • Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island: Bumpties, Frog Pirates, Goonies, Grim Leechers, Lantern Ghosts, Little Mousers and Tap-Taps debut as enemies in this game.
  • Super Mario 64: Bookends, Chuckyas and Spindels debut as enemies in this game. The theme for Peach's Castle is a cover version of this game's castle theme. Birabuto Pyramid's overall layout and puzzles heavily resemble the Pyramid Puzzle level. The Metal Cap and Metal Mario Power-Up debut as part of the Metal Mario Bros Attack. Immobile snowmen resembling Mr. Blizzards appear scattered all over the Chillwind Plains.
  • Paper Mario: During the Yoshi Feast Bro Attack, the five random colors of Yoshi that can hatch from the egg are green, blue, purple, red or yellow, the same colors as the Fearsome 5.
  • Super Mario Sunshine: One of Bowser Jr.'s attacks during his boss battle involves using his Magic Paintbrush to summon a Proto Piranha which spits Swoopin' Stus.
  • Mario Kart: Double Dash!!: Daisy invites everyone to a vacation in her cruiser at the end, which sails trough every location seen during the game in the credits.
  • New Super Mario Bros.: Snow Spikes and Splunkins debut as enemies in this game. Tanks resembling the Monty Tank can be found inside of Bowser's Airship.
  • Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2:: A lot of elements originating from these game are incorporated in this one. Bomb Boos, Cluckbooms, Eye Beamers, Mandibugs, Sentry Beams, Spiky Topmans and Spring Topmans appear as enemies, while Baron Brrr, Bouldergeist, Bugaboom, Fiery Dino Piranha, Gobblegut, Kamella, Kingfin, King Kaliente, King Lakitu, Major Burrows, Prince Pikante, Rollodillo, Sorbetti, Tarantox and Topmaniac appear as bosses, with Kamella being a major antagonist during the game. Star Bits are visible in the background of Tatanga's Space Station
  • New Super Mario Bros. Wii: Bramballs, Cooligans, Foos and Huckit Crabs debut as enemies in this game.
  • Super Mario 3D Land: Draglets and Prongos debut as enemies in this game.
  • New Super Mario Bros. 2: Bone Piranha Plants debut as enemies in this game.
  • New Super Mario Bros. U: Flipruses and Waddlewings debut as enemies in this game.
  • Super Mario 3D World: Brolders, Fuzzlers and Snow Pokeys debut as enemies in this game, while Parabones make a cameo during a Dry Bone's attack in Bowser's Castle.

Trivia[]

  • The Koopalings were originally planned to appear in this game, having the same role as the Elite Trio before being replaced with them. Their scrapped Boss Battle involved the seven of them fighting the Mario Bros at the same time while riding the Koopa Clown Car.
    • This was done because the Koopalings already had big roles in Paper Jam and, being so many of them, their appearance would've felt rushed and underused in such a small time frame, which is why the Elite Trio were more appropriate as the bosses of Bowser's Airship.
