Have a good time on Paper Luigi: The Watch of Eternity! |
The game's driving gimmick, besides being led by Luigi, is the utilization of time travel. Over the course of twelve chapters, Luigi travels to different points in time--past, present, and future--to restore power to the ancient relic, The Watch of Eternity. Throughout the journey, you are stopped time and time again by an unjust emperor from a realm outside of space and time, who seeks complete control over the universal timeline.
The game is set to release on the Nintendo Switch in 2024 alongside the HD remake of TTYD.Contents

Story[]
Synopsises will be added in this section. See here for the full story: Paper Luigi: The Watch of Eternity/Plot
Prologue: Watch Very Closely[]
Luigi receives an invitation to come to Moretime City and take possession of The Watch of Eternity, a recently discovered artifact which allows the one who holds it to time travel. Dr. Lakistein, the professor who discovered the watch, initially battled Luigi when he first arrived, believing him to be a criminal. Lakistein's assistant, Spect, coached Luigi through the battle and eventually permanently joined his party. Lakistein taught Luigi and Spect about the Watch, time travel, and the history of Moretime City. Luigi went underground and prepared to time travel, but an entity of darkness, Chronol, arrived, scattered the Hour Crystals from within the Watch, and battled Luigi for the Watch. With the help of Merlon, Luigi was able to defeat Chronol and learn how to use Special Moves. He was tasked by Merlon to travel throughout time to recover the missing Hour Crystals.

Gameplay[]
At its core, the game plays very similarly to TTYD. For a majority of the game, you play as Luigi and one of his partners as you travel through your journey. In the overworld, you solve puzzles, complete platforming challenges, and solve problems for the local NPCs. Your primary objective in each chapter is to defeat the chapter's main boss and collect the Hour Crystal to further your time travel abilities.
Luigi's movement operates identically to how his brother, Mario, moved in previous games. Almost immediately into the game, however, you have the option to equip a 0 BP badge entitled Luigi Time. Equipping Luigi Time gives Luigi a faster running speed and a floatier jump; however, his traction has dipped significantly. This makes surfaces more slippery and gives Luigi a harder time stopping suddenly. Perpetual ice physics, as it were--even more in Chapter 6's ice world.
On a related note, the same person who offers you the Luigi Time badge also immediately offers you a 0 BP badge named King Luigi. This badge enables a "Hard Mode" for the game, buffing every enemy's HP, Attack, and Defense stats. This does offer much greater rewards than before, however. Every defeated enemy has a greater chance at dropping a large amount of Hearts, Flowers, and Coins, as well as random items. NPCs in Moretime City will also recognize that you've made progress with the King Luigi badge, and will give you discounts in stores, restaurants, and even when gambling. Completing the Pit of 100 Trials with King Luigi equipped for the entire duration will give you access to a brand new challenge; this will be addressed further here.

Leveling Up[]
Every time Luigi defeats an enemy, he will earn Star Points. The amount of Star Points gained is relative to how strong the enemy is compared to Luigi's current level; the stronger it is, the more Points it drops. When Luigi earns 100 Star Points, he goes up a level and is given the option of upgrading HP, FP, or BP. If the player wants an added challenge, they're able to opt out of going up a level.
Every time Luigi's level reaches a multiple of 10, he goes up a rank. Each rank increase will increase the stage and audience size during battle. Each rank has its own net of rewards, listed below:
Luigi begins the game at Mushroom Rank. At this point, Luigi and co. are outsiders in Moretime City, and yield no special rewards as a result. In battle, their audience seats 50 people.
Luigi reaches Shell Rank at Level 10. Shell Rank gives him access to a new selection of items from Charlieton's and Lakibees's respective stores. The stage now seats 100 audience members, who are now slightly more likely to throw helpful items to Luigi and his partner during battle.
At Level 20, Luigi reaches Leaf Rank. Random NPCs in Moretime City with a ! above their heads can now initiate conversation with Luigi (Luigi, of course, does not have to interact if he doesn't want to). These NPCs will praise Luigi and may offer him a free item or badge. The audience now seats 150 audience members.
Luigi reaches Flower Rank at Level 30. Moretime Depot will now allow Luigi to visit Toad Town, where he can interact with Mario, Peach, and other classic NPCs. The audience now seats 200. Audience members can now throw harmful items at the enemies themselves.
At Level 40, Luigi reaches his final rank, Star Rank. There are many benefits that come from the Star Rank. In battle, especially weak enemies may automatically run on their own. Every day, Saul T. will cook Luigi one special dish for free. Charlieton is guaranteed to appear on every floor of the Pit of 100 Trials, though his items are still highly-priced. After the battle when Luigi reaches Level 40, the defeated enemy will drop a 0 BP badge entitled Cap Emblem, allowing Luigi to take off his cap--a purely cosmetic change. The badge shop also now carries three 0 BP badges called 64 Emblem, Thousand Emblem, and Super Emblem. Equipping one of these badges will perpetually change the game's soundtrack to match either Paper Mario, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, or Super Paper Mario. The audience now seats 300.
Shine Sprites[]
Shine Sprites return from TTYD, operating with the same function as before. When Luigi collects three Shine Sprites, he can take them to Merlon and have him upgrade one of his party members.
At the beginning of the game, each party member can be upgraded once to the Super Rank, where they gain 5 HP, 1 Attack, and a new attack to use in battle. After Chapter 5, Luigi can track down the Magic Orb and give it to Merlon, which allows him to upgrade your partners a second time to Ultra Rank. They receive the same benefits as before wihen reaching Ultra Rank. After Chapter 8, Duplinity arrives in Moretime City. Giving him three Shine Sprites allows him to upgrade your partners to Master Rank.
There are 120 Shine Sprites in the game. If you upgrade every partner to Master Rank, there will be three Shine Sprites left over. You can give these (or any) Shine Sprites to a Pianta in Moretime City, who will pay a large amount of coins for them.
Battling[]
Battles occur in a similar style as to how they did in Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, this being a turn-based system taking place on a theatrical stage. The way in which a battle begins will depend on a few factors: simply walking into or being approached by an enemy on the overworld will start a battle normally, but if either Luigi or a partner of his with an attacking overworld ability (Koopardo, Chelsea, or Raider) successfully attacks the enemy on the overworld, the battle will begin with a First Strike. Luigi or his partner will need to pull off the Action Command for the attack they used in order for the First Strike to have an effect. Certain enemies can also perform a First Strike on Luigi if they can attack him in the overworld. At the start of the battle, the enemies run onto the stage's right, and Luigi and his current partner run onto the left. Unless Luigi is struck by the enemy in the field, Luigi or his partner will move first; you can alternate between whether Luigi or his partner moves first by pressing Y.
Luigi's Turn![]
Luigi's moveset is built primarily around his Jump and Hammer moves.. Depending on what type of enemy Luigi is facing, certain moves would be less or more optimal than others. Luigi also has a variety of Special Moves granted to him by the Watch of Eternity as he collects more Hour Crystals.
Throughout his journey, Luigi is able to find and equip Badges, many of which can impact the way battles go. Some change Luigi's stats; badges like Power Plus or Defend Plus would boost Luigi's Attack or Defense stat by 1. HP Plus or FP Plus give Luigi 5 extra HP or FP, and Watch Closer allows Luigi's partners to also use Special Moves for a cost of extra WP. There are also plenty of Badges that give Luigi extra moves for his Hammer and Jump, such as Power Bounce, Slaphammer, Sleepy Stomp, and Piercing Blow. These moves require more FP.
Partner's Turn![]
Luigi's party members operate similarly to him in battle. They can attack, use items, appeal to recover WP, or defend. Each party member begins with two basic attacks, one costing zero FP and the other, more powerful move, requiring FP. They gain an additional attack every time they're upgraded to a higher rank. Each partner has their own HP stat, and can thus be targeted by enemies and take damage. They share Luigi's FP stat, however, and can use this FP to pull off their more powerful attacks. Partners are also able to use Items of any nature to heal themselves or Luigi, or to attack the enemy.
Enemy's Turn![]
After both Luigi and his partner have taken their turns, the enemy will make their move. Each enemy will move one after another, beginning with the foe closest to Luigi. Every attack dealt to Luigi or his partner can be Guarded or Superguarded to lessen the damage dealt. The victim has an eight-frame window to press A before the attack lands to guard the attack and take one less damage. You also have a two-frame window to press B to Superguard and take no damage, while also dealing one damage to the one attacking. Late into the game, some foes have remarkably complicated timing for their Superguard; a professor in Timentia can teach Luigi the timing for each enemy for 50 coins per lesson. It is possible for enemies to come into battle carrying an item or badge. If the item is applicable to the battle (it can heal a fellow enemy or deal damage to Luigi), the enemy's AI will prioritize using this item for its turn. After the battle finishes, there is a small chance that the item or badge carried by an enemy to be dropped for Luigi to pick up. It can also be stolen during the battle and automatically added to the inventory by Doopleton with his Mystify attack.
After all enemies have attacked, the action returns to Luigi and his partner.
Audience[]
Because battles take place on a theater stage, every battle has an audience watching the fight take place.
Characters[]
Main Characters[]
Character | Description |
Luigi is the hero of this adventure! He was invited by Dr. Lakistein to Moretime City with an assignment to study the Watch of Eternity and protect it at all costs. In an effort to prove himself and pull himself out of his brother's shadow, he accepted! He soon realized, however, that powerful forces were searching for this Watch and would stop at nothing to obtain it. Luigi sought to become stronger and learn how to use the Watch's power to protect it from these interdimensional foes. And, as an added bonus, he got to travel through time! | |
CHRONOL | Chronol is Luigi's primary antagonist throughout the adventure. He is an interdimensional being seemingly composed of pure darkness. At this time, not much is known about Chronol's past, other than his deep devotion to the Master of Time. In an effort to rescue the Master from his far-off prison, he seeks to claim the Watch of Eternity and the Hour Crystals that power it. He recruited two mercenaries, Raider and Duplinity, as well as the whole of Bowser's militia, to assist in his conquest. He even brainwashed Mario and Peach into helping him gather the Crystals. |
Bowser and Kammy tend to flip--flop between being Luigi's allies and enemies as the story goes on. At the beginning of the adventure, Chronol invaded Bowser's Castle and gained full control over the entire Koopa Troop. You can control Bowser during every other chapter's intermission, in which he travels around the modern-day equivalent of locations Luigi has visited searching for answers. Comedy ensues. |
Partners[]
As in the first two games of the series, Luigi earns the trust and help of partners throughout the game. Each partner harbors a unique ability that helps both in battle and in the overworld. Unlike the past games, most cutscenes involve a large number of the partners, not just the one you are currently travelling with, which leads to more character development and more plot progression.

Chelsea is a timid young Chuckya from ancient Bompeii. When Luigi arrived in Bompeii, her family was stranded on Grumble Volcano. She brought Luigi to Bompeii's mayor, who guided them on how they could save her family. Chelsea volunteered to join Luigi in an effort to become stronger and help Luigi journey up the mountain.
In the field, Chelsea is able to throw Luigi over large gaps that he otherwise couldn't cross. Luigi can combine this action with his own jump or hammer move. Adding a jump can increase the distance Luigi moves, and adding a hammer can deal extra damage from a First Strike. |
Sucker Punch | Repeatedly punches an enemy, hitting up to four times. 0 FP |
Luigi Chuck | Throws Luigi at an enemy, who is then able to jump on an enemy up to three more times. 3 FP | ||

Gooby is a newborn baby Yoshi who Luigi encountered when landing on Egg Island. Duplinity got to the Yoshi village before Luigi and wreaked havoc while disguised as Luigi. Gooby hid the Hour Crystal in her mouth to prevent Duplinity from getting it, but accidentally swallowed it and gained some enhanced abilities because of it. Gooby’s parents tasked Luigi with watching over Gooby on his journey.
Gooby bears two overworld abilities. Her passive ability, meaning Luigi doesn’t need to press any buttons to activate it, is lighting up with a bright yellow hue whenever Luigi enters a dark room, is near a hidden object, or is next to a Minutr Keyhole. Pressing X has Gooby spit out a bubble. These can either be used as platforms to reach higher destinations or swallow up projectiles to keep Luigi from taking damage. |
Bubble | Damages any enemy with a chance of confusing them. 0 FP |
Egg Riot | Throws up to five eggs at various enemies. 2 FP | ||
Chokehold | Gooby wraps an enemy with her tongue, which may immobilize an enemy for a turn while dealing damage. This also steals any item the enemy may be holding. 3 FP | ||

When Luigi finds it after a long scavenger hunt in Moretime City, he returns it to her, and she gives him a ticket to her concert. After the concert, Shayzee decides to travel with Luigi and follow her second most dominant passion—going on an adventure.
In the field, Shayzee is able to sing and put nearby enemies to sleep. Her singing also converts Luigi's sound effects to their 8-bit form, turns the background music to the original Super Mario Bros. music, and turns Luigi and his partners 8-bit. |

Locations[]
This is a list of all of the major locations in the game. There are other areas that Luigi can visit after completing the main story, but those are separate from the main areas.
Prologue: Moretime City | |
Moretime City acts as the game's main hub. Moretime is rich with locations that allow Luigi to travel through time, known professionally as Time Shrines. The main square branches off to a western and eastern side of town, as well as a distant set of ruins. | |
Location | Description |
---|---|
Main Square | |
Moretime Depot | The northernmost part of the main square has Moretime's train station, upon which train Luigi first arrives. Visiting this station throughout your adventure may just provide cameos from past characters in the Paper Mario series... |
Fountain of Youth | Despite its name, the water in the massive Fountain of Youth actually has no magical capabilities. Still, it presents itself as a tourist attraction which many people congregate around. The fountain is also home to the first Time Shrine that Luigi travels through. |
Cloud Nine Cafe | Found directly northwest from the fountain, Cloud Nine Cafe is a restaurant run by Lakibees, Lakistein's brother. For 10 coins, Luigi and party can sit down and enjoy a meal, fully restoring their HP, FP, and WP. As Luigi's rank goes up and gets to know Lakibees, he may also leave their meal with a unique item or badge. |
Lakistein's Den of Wisdom | Lakistein's home, directly east from his brother's cafe. Luigi and crew will visit Lakistein after each chapter, updating him on the state of the Watch and receiving guidance for their next adventure. Luigi is also able to read several books off Lakistein's shelves to learn more about different time periods. |
Moretime City West | |
Chuckola's | A Chuckola Cola bar in which several NPCs come and go. The bar is run by a Beanish who bears a strong resemblance to Podley. Bowser visits this bar after every chapter until Chapter 8 and tells Luigi about his adventure; after Chapter 3, you are able to switch to Bowser's perspective, allowing you to play through the chapter. |
Monty Carlos | A smaller franchise of the Monty Carlos casino visited by Bowser. Here, Luigi is able to play arcade games or slots to try and earn more coins, items, or badges. |
Moretime Publishing | A book publishing company run by a family of Mousers. Each chapter, they will have just wrapped production on a history book chronicling Luigi's latest time traveling adventure. A Time Shrine can be accessed after completing their fetch-quest after Chapter 3. |
Moretime Ruins | |
Merlon's House | The wizard Merlon lives here in his big blue tent from the original Paper Mario. Here, he can upgrade your partners for three Shine Sprites. His tent is also located atop a Time Shrine. |
Spaceless Gateway | In an effort to bridge the gap between the powers of space and time, ancient wizards built this gateway as a conduit between the two forces. Merlon assists Luigi in using this gateway to access Timentia in Chapter 8. It can also be used to travel to the mdoern-day equivalents of the locations Luigi visits after the main campaign is completed. |
Charlieton's Wares | Charlieton the salesman has set up a stand next to the gateway and sells Luigi rare, powerful items and badges for a steep price. |
Moretime City East | |
Goomba Shop | Moretime's item shop, run by a pair of Goombas. This is your run-of-the-mill item shop, housing Mushrooms, Honey Syrups, and other essential items to begin your journey. A pair of Goombas run every shop Luigi will come across on his journey. |
Trouble Center | Next to the item shop is the Trouble Center, run by Lakistein's archaeology team. They scour the land looking for requests for help placed by people in the past or present. Luigi can accept these requests and fulfill them for a reward. |
Equip Yourself | By crossing the river with Shamses's staff after Chapter 3, you can enter Equip Yourself, a badge shop. The Doogans who run this shop offer their badges for ridiculously high prices; however, you can negotiate with them to bring the price ever so slightly lower, but if you try to go too low, they won't offer you the badge for a time. |
Smell's Kitchen | Next to Equip Yourself is Smell's Kitchen, a deli run by Saul T., a sinister Toad with a Russian accent. Saul can cook recipes for Luigi if he brings him the needed ingredients. |

Minute Keyholes[]
Minute Keyholes take on the role of the Trouble Center. After recruiting Goobby in Chapter 5, you gain the ability to enter Minute Keyholes and complete various side-quests across space and time. Some of these side-quests will take you to locations you've visited before; others will take you to brand new places and times you can explore.
In retaining the game's clock theme, there are 60 Minute Keyholes scattered across Moretime City, Spaceless Town, and Toad Town. Wonky can be found in Moretime City and can sell you maps that lead you to Keyholes that are especially difficult to find.

Post-Game Challenges[]
For more information, see here.
Watch of Eternity remedies an issue had with past Paper Mario entries by including a plethora of challenges to be taken on after completing the main story.
Additional Chapters[]
The most obvious post-game content presented after completing Chapter 8 is the existence of four more chapters and, naturally, four more Hour Crystals to collect. The game is considered "complete" after defeating the Master of Time in battle, but there are still more locations to visit, people to save, and Crystals to collect.
Pit of 100 Trials[]
The Pit of 100 Trials returns in a format similar to Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, and can be accessed as soon as you unlock Koopardo's glider in Chapter 1. Every floor, with the exception of multiples of 10, contains a set of enemies that must be defeated to progress through the Pit. The enemies gradually get more difficult. At every 10th floor, a large chest can be found with a prize within, usually a rare badge. Charlieton also appears occasionally in this tenth floor, selling some bare-necessity items for costly prices. Every 10th floor also contains a one-way pipe that can take you back to the entrance of the Pit. If you choose to take this exit pipe, your placement in the pit is not saved. If you want tor return to the Pit, you'll need to start back at Floor 1. The 100th floor of the dungeon is home to the Master of Space, the mighty rival to the Master of Time. Defeating the Master of Space grants Luigi an ultra-rare, ultra-valuable badge.
After completing the Pit, the Master of Space's energy transforms the Pit of 100 Trials into the Infinite Pit. The Pit becomes a brand-new roguelike challenge, where Luigi gains strength as he progresses with no end. Placement can now be saved with a Save Block on every tenth floor. Before entering, you can adjust your loadout as well as what to expect within the Pit. This will be addressed in more detail here.
Centennial Mountain[]
The Centennial Mountain is an additional challenge that can be accessed after completing the main eight chapters of the main story, though the game recommends that you collect all twelve Hour Crystals before attempting to push all the way through. Functionally, it's almost identical to the Pit of 100 Trials. There are one hundred different ledges on the mountain which Luigi must ascend, and on each ledge, a set of enemies must be fought. There are no traditional rest floors like the Pit's ten floor-tradition. On every 25th floor, a new boss must be fought. After defeating the boss, a Heal Block, exit pipe, and Charlieton shop all become available for use. If you return to the mountain after defeating a boss, fighting them again is optional. At the summit of the mountain is Raider from the future. After he is defeated, Luigi from the future appears and joins him in battle as the game's final ridiculous superbosses.
EX Bosses[]
Exploring Dr. Lakistein's home any time after defeating The Wright Brothers will allow Luigi to find The Magnificent Compass, an artifact designed very similarly to one he would spend his next adventure searching after. Interacting with the Compass will transport Luigi to a boss arena where a harder version of the bosses he's fought appears. Defeating the EX Boss will grant Luigi a massive sum of Star Points and a plethora of Coins. The Compass is automatically updated with new challenges as soon as a new boss is defeated. The list of EX Bosses to challenge can be found here.
Boss Rush[]
Duplinity appears in Moretime City after completing Chapter 8. He offers to help train Luigi by transforming into any of the bosses he's previously fought--which does include EX Bosses if any have been defeated by this time. Bosses can either be fought individually or in a non-stop gauntlet. Duplinity gifts Luigi an item completely at random after defeating each boss.
Wario's Colosseum[]
Returning to Wario's Gold Mine any time after defeating Grrrock will allow you to join Wario's fighting arena, Wario's Colosseum. The Colosseum plays out similarly to the Glitz Pit in Thousand Year Door: you start at the bottom of the Mario League, then fight your way up to the Wario League. When you reach the top of the Wario league, you have an opportunity to challenge the champion and become the champion yourself. The champion is, of course, Wario. Waluigi plays the role of referee during each match. A detailed list of the fights can be found here.
Tattle Log[]
Toadsworth arrives in Moretime City along with Daisy after you defeat the Wright Brothers. Toadsworth wishes to learn more about the monsters you fight throughout your journey. You can check in with him periodically and show him your Tattle Log. For every 15 entries he sees, Daisy will update your Jukebox (found in the Journal tab of the menu) with tracks from the past six Paper Mario games, as well as other beloved tracks from other Super Mario games. A full list of Jukebox rewards can be found here.
100% Completion[]
Report to Dr. Lakistein after completing Chapter 8 to learn your progress towards completing every task the Watch of Eternity has for you! To complete the game, the following is required:
- Complete all twelve story chapters.
- Fill out every entry in the Tattle Log.
- Collect every badge available in the game.
- Cook every available recipe at least once.
- Reach at least Level 40, and fully upgrade each party member.
- Find every Star Piece and Shine Sprite.
- Complete every task presented by the Minute Keyholes.
After completing all of this, Dr. Lakistein will give you a remarkably lackluster reward. Maybe the Return Postage badge just to be funny.

Some locations, including Flipside, the Sammer Kingdom, and Downtown of Crag can be visited through Minute Keyholes. Given the nature of Super Paper Mario's gameplay, the layout of these locations have been drastically changed to match the traditional format.

Trivia[]
- This game’s concept was inspired by Paper Mario: Countdown to Chaos by Trucky (t∣b∣c), which drew heavily on time travel. Trucky has since deleted the game, so this project is meant to keep his legacy alive.
- Chronologically, this game takes place before the events of The Thousand-Year Door but after the events of Paper Mario. Luigi begins Watch of Eternity as his insecure self from 64 with a desire to live up to Mario, but has not yet had a chance to prove himself.
