The Wisps are a race of small, yet powerful aliens that appear in the Sonic series, making their first appearance in Sonic Colors. They hail from Planet Wisp, though they can be found on many planets across the universe. Dr. Eggman kidnapped and enslaved them for their power until Sonic rescued all of them. While most returned to their home planet after that, a few decided to stay on Sonic's planet. Since then, they help Sonic and his allies on their adventures whenever they can.

Wisps have the unique ability to bestow Color Powers to Sonic, or anyone who collects them, by using their Hyper-go-on, their energy and life source. There are several varieties of Wisps, each of which can grant a different Color Power, granting the user new powers and abilities. However, they can only give Color Powers to those they trust. Currently, there are 17 different Wisps that have been introduced throughout the series.

Characteristics[]

Wisps are aliens that resemble underwater cephalopods, such as octopuses and squids, though all of them come in varying shapes and colors, they all consist of a head with several tentacles beneath them. Other characteristics, such as head shape, color, and number of eyes, are determined by the breed. Baby Wisps have much softer proportions, but as they mature, their tentacles start to grow and their proportions become more pronounced. If a Wisp has all of its Hyper-go-on drained from their bodies, they will turn into a Nega-Wisp, becoming more primal and violent. These Wisps have no eyes and large, toothy mouths. While Nega-Wisps are indeed corrupted, it doesn't seem to affect their moral compasses.

There are 17 known kinds of Wisps, each having their own recognizable features. While each breed of Wisp tends to lean toward a certain set of personality traits, all of them are peaceful, playful, and friendly by nature. They live in perfect harmony with each other, and tend to spend most of their time playing with one another. This friendly, non-hostile nature lets them get along with anyone. Wisps also have their unique verbal language, which cannot be understood by other races, with the exception of Tails using a translator in Sonic Colors.

Wisps are able to float through the air, which serves as their main mode of movement, and are also fast enough to keep up with Sonic himself. While flying, they create a light trail behind them, which matches the color of the Wisp. As mentioned, every Wisp has Hyper-go-on within them, and every Wisp breed has its own version of it, resulting in wildly different powers. This can range from shooting forward as a laser, drilling through the ground, elemental powers, and more. The Wisps can also combine their powers to perform unbelievable feats, such as restraining a void at the end of Sonic Colors.

Types of Wisps[]

There are 17 known varieties of Wisps. Below lists them, their characteristics, and their Color Powers.

Wisp Information
White Wisps
White Wisp
White Wisps are the most common Wisp variety, and enjoy talking and playing with each other. A particular White Wisp, named Yacker, serves as the Wisps' ambassador and is the one who helps Sonic and Tails throughout Sonic Colors. They don't let Sonic transform, but they can grant him the ability to Boost. They first appear in both versions of Sonic Colors.
Cyanwisp
Cyan Wisp
Cyan Wisps are very fast. They never seem to stop moving, and as a result, can be a bit scatterbrained at times. Sonic can transform into Cyan Laser after collecting one, which lets Sonic dash in the inputted direction at incredible speed. He can also bounce off walls and special cyan-colored diamonds to change his direction. They first appear in both versions of Sonic Colors.
Yellowwisp
Yellow Wisp
Yellow Wisps are very fond of the earth and water, and are very energetic and playful even among other Wisps. Sonic can transform into Yellow Drill after collecting one, which lets him burrow into the ground or water and lets him move through it at high speeds. He can also defeat any enemies in the way. They first appear in both versions of Sonic Colors.
Orange Wisp
Orange Wisp
Orange Wisps are very sensitive and emotional; they can get elated when praised, and become depressed when they make a mistake, and are also very quick to anger. Sonic can transform into Orange Rocket after collecting one, which blasts him high into the air like a rocket, smashing through enemies and breakable obstacles to reach new heights. They first appear in both versions of Sonic Colors.
PinkWisp
Pink Wisp
Pink Wisps can be rather harsh, hence their somewhat unfriendly appearance, but are actually very kind deep down. Sonic can transform into Pink Spikes after collecting one, turning him into a large spiked ball. In this form, when using a Spin Dash, he will protrude spikes that allow him to stick to walls and ceilings. He also automatically defeats enemies he spins into. They first appear in the Wii version of Sonic Colors.
Bluewisp
Blue Wisp
Blue Wisps are very intelligent and make great leaders. When they decide to do something big, the Blue Wisps are almost always successful. Sonic can transform into Blue Cube after collecting one, turning him into a large, blue-colored cube. This allows him to crush enemies and obstacles below him, as well as turn Blue Rings into Blue Blocks and vice-versa, opening up new pathways. They first appear in the Wii version of Sonic Colors.
GreenWisp
Green Wisp
Green Wisps are very subtle, yet goofy creatures. As such, they can unexpectedly appear at any time, though it is advised to keep a look out for them in the sky. Sonic can transform into Green Hover after collecting one, allowing him to hover through the air as long as the jump button is held. He can also dash through lines of Rings at very high speeds. They first appear in the Wii version of Sonic Colors.
Wisp Purple
Purple Wisp
Purple Wisps are one of the Nega-Wisps, who are devoid of their Hyper-go-on. They are corrupted in this state, and are forced to carry out Dr. Eggman's evil plans. They are also very violent against others. Sonic can transform into Purple Frenzy after collecting one, which turns him into a massive monster that rampages around, growing larger as he destroys more enemies and obstacles. They first appear in the Wii version of Sonic Colors.
Red Wisp soniccolors
Red Wisp
Red Wisps are lively Wisps, but are slightly scatterbrained. Sonic can transform into Red Burst after collecting one, turning him into a burning fireball. He can create an explosion of flame around himself, which damages enemies around him as well as makes him jump. He can use the explosion repeatedly to gain infinite height. They first appear in the DS version of Sonic Colors.
Wisp Violet
Violet Wisp
Violet Wisps are Nega-Wisps, like the Purple Wisps, and have been drained of their Hyper-go-on and corrupted by Dr. Eggman. They're incredibly violent and have a tendency to bark and bite at others. Sonic can transform into Violet Void after collecting one, transforming him into a black hole that will suck in nearby items, enemies, and obstacles. He will grow larger the more objects he sucks in, as will his intake radius, and being a larger void will allow him to suck up even larger obstacles to open new passages. They first appear in the DS version of Sonic Colors.
Indigo Wisp Artwork
Indigo Wisp
Indigo Wisps can make Sonic transform into Indigo Asteroid after he collects one. Sonic is able to move along the ground, and will destroy enemies and parts of the environment he touches. The remnants of them are collected as an asteroid ring around Sonic, increasing his range and how much he can destroy. He can also jump to reach objects that are higher. They first appear in both versions of Sonic Lost World.
Crimson Wisp lostworld
Crimson Wisp
Crimson Wisps can make Sonic transform into Crimson Eagle after he collects one. Sonic is able to fly forward, which will gradually deplete his Wisp gauge; he will turn back to normal when it runs out. He can also use a dash attack, but it drains the gauge faster. To refill the gauge, Sonic can collect more Crimson Wisps as he flies. Sonic may only use the Crimson Eagle in certain areas, otherwise the Crimson Wisp will sleep and cannot be used. They first appear in the Wii U version of Sonic Lost World.
Magenta Wisp Art
Magenta Wisp
Magenta Wisps can make Sonic transform into Magenta Rhythm after he collects one. Sonic turns into a large music note that can bounce infinitely, allowing him to cross large gaps. After the transformation, music note icons appear, which can be tapped on the Wii U's GamePad to steer Sonic along the path, which is faster than simply bouncing normally. If Sonic stops bouncing at any point, he drops back down. They first appear in the Wii U version of Sonic Lost World.
Black Bomb v2
Black Wisp
Black Wisps can make Sonic transform into Black Bomb after he collects one. Sonic turns into a large bomb that can bowl over enemies, defeating them. The more enemies he defeats, the larger the bomb's size will become, which allows him to defeat bigger enemies. When the transformation begins to expire, the bomb will flash red before creating a massive explosion, destroying all surrounding enemies and obstacles as Sonic reverts to normal. The size and power of the explosion is proportionate to the size of the bomb. They first appear in the Wii U version of Sonic Lost World.
Grey Wisp
Gray Wisp
Gray Wisps can make Sonic transform into Gray Quake after he collects one. Sonic turns into a gray boulder that moves forward automatically, breaking down obstacles and defeating enemies in his path. He can also perform a ground pound that creates a shockwave, destroying all threats in the radius. Sonic can also run up walls and move through quicksand and green sludge undeterred in this form. They first appear in the 3DS version of Sonic Lost World.
Ivory Wisp lostworld
Ivory Wisp
Ivory Wisps can make Sonic transform into Ivory Lightning after he collects one. Sonic can move around and jump in this form, and shock enemies he attacks. He can also create a thunder shockwave by homing in on an enemy, as well as lock on to yellow coils hanging in the air. Sonic can also draw in nearby Rings, similar to the Thunder Shield. They first appear in the 3DS version of Sonic Lost World.
Jade Wisp
Jade Wisp
Jade Wisps can make Sonic transform into Jade Ghost after he collects one. Sonic is able to float freely through the air, and is also partially invisible in this form, which allows him to phase through solid objects to reach new areas, or pass through enemies and obstacles unharmed. Sonic can also pull himself towards an enemy with a green-colored beam of ghost energy. Despite having no eyes and similarly-shaped mouths to Purple and Violet Wisps, Jade Wisps aren't Nega-Wisps, nor are they corrupted. They first appear in Team Sonic Racing.
