Differences from the original story[]
General[]
- While the dialogue is largely unchanged between the Japanese versions of both games, the dialogue in this game's English script (and by extension, any languages using the English version as a base) is mostly not based on the original game's English script, save for a few select lines, and is instead re-translated to be closer to the Japanese versions' scripts.
- Dr. Eggman is referred to as such by everyone other than Sonic and his friends in English rather than "Dr. Robotnik", matching his Japanese name as has been standard for the franchise since the original game.
- A few characters who debuted after the original game show up in this game, namely Eggman's henchmen, Orbot and Cubot, and Cream the Rabbit and her family. The latter addition is in part to a retcon where the events of Sonic Advance 2 happen before the events of this game.
- Although the story is clearly based on the original game, plenty of elements from the version of the story in Sonic X are carried over to this game.
Sonic[]
- Sonic and Tails greeting each other occurs at Emerald Coast rather than at the Hotel, though the scene goes back to the Hotel like the original afterwards. Likewise, the dialogue before Sonic asks what happened in both Sonic and Tails' stories are merged in both, with the dialogue in Tails' story first, and the dialogue in Sonic's story afterwards.
- After Tails mentions taking the train to the Mystic Ruins, Sonic mentions that he's faster than a train, to which Tails replies that he forgot. This addition to the script handwaves the error in the original where Tails mentions that going by train is the fastest way to get to the Mystic Ruins, while disregarding the fact that Sonic may be faster than that.
- After the scene above, Orbot and Cubot are shown giving the information to Eggman, explaining how Eggman was able to intercept Sonic and Tails in front of Tails' Workshop in the original.
- A new scene was added when Sonic and Tails find the Wind Stone at Tails' Workshop, where they wonder how it got there and deciding it might be useful.
- A new scene was added between after Eggman steals the Chaos Emerald from Casinopolis and before getting the Ice Stone, where Sonic and Tails meet Cream and Cheese, who gives them said stone and explains that she was responsible for the Wind Stone as well.
- The little girl who saw Sonic fall onto the beach of Station Square after Sky Chase Act 1 is absent in the remake, to better highlight the line Sonic says after he looks around.
- After Amy runs into Twinkle Park before Sonic can stop her, he then looks back to ZERO to see that he's disappeared, fixing an issue where they simply forget about him in the original, and explaining Sonic's concern over Amy after the Twinkle Park stage.
- When Sonic and Tails reunite at Red Mountain, Sonic mentions to Tails that Amy was captured and taken to the Egg Carrier, which explains why Tails knows they need to rescue her when they get there.
- When Sonic encounters Eggman at the end of the story at Final Egg, the dialogue removed from the original is repurposed and reused here.
- The ending now has dialogue.
- A post-credits scene was added, showing Chaos as a puddle in the Mystic Ruins, indicating that the story isn't over yet.
Tails[]
- Several of the changes highlighted in Sonic's story carry over to Tails'.
- The flashback that occurs after Sky Chase Act 1 is different in the remake than the original. Instead, the flashback is a modernized version of the Sonic 2 Opening scene in Sonic Origins.
- After Tails catches Froggy in Sand Hill, and before he's taken to the past, he sees a mural depicting the shrine of the Master Emerald and the Chaos Emeralds.
- A new scene was added after Speed Highway, showing Tails disable the missile.
Knuckles[]
- In the original, the way Eggman destroyed the Master Emerald to release Chaos is never specified. Here, he says an ancient chant to do this.
- Before each time Knuckles is taken to the past, he sees a piece pertaining to it.
- In Casinopolis, he sees a vase depicting the Echidna tribe.
- In Lost World, he sees a mural depicting the plundering ways of the Echidna tribe.
- In Sky Deck, he sees on a monitor the stone tablet that Eggman mentioned regarding Chaos as a whole.
- A new scene was added after Knuckles arrives in the jungle, having him enter Sand Hill.
- Once Knuckles follows Gamma into Eggman's base, he then has to fight him afterwards.
Amy[]
- When Amy reminisces about her adventures with Sonic, the scenes depicted instead show various events from Sonic CD, with Amy wearing an outfit reminiscent of her classic design.
- When Amy is captured by ZERO after Twinkle Park, Birdie distracts him, giving them time to enter Speed Highway. This explains why Sonic has to go there in his story. After Speed Highway, the story proceeds as normal.
- After Hot Shelter, Amy doesn't get sent to the past. Rather, the scene has her exit to the pool from a vent.
- The whole scene of Amy talking to Birdie after escaping the Egg Carrier happens instead in the train station, fixing the story issue of Eggman's missile attack in Tails' story occurring at the same time.
- When Amy gets to the jungle, she sees ZERO again, prompting her to go to Sand Hill instead. It's there where she's sent to the past, first seeing a mural depicting Chaos and the Chao.
- When Amy gets to the Egg Carrier, she sees Gamma again and watches him die.
Big[]
- After both Twinkle Park and Ice Cap, scenes showing Froggy escape Big's grasp occur.
- A new scene happens after Big leaves Twinkle Park, showing him meet Cream for the first time.
- After Emerald Coast, Big now has to go to the Mystic Ruins and apprehend Gamma there. From there, a new scene occurs having Big explain their backstory (which is bizarre beyond comprehension), and Froggy escaping Gamma's grasp and entering Lost World.
- Big is transported to the past instead in Lost World, after he sees a mural depicting the people that live among the Master Emerald.
- After the flashback, the unused dialogue for Big finding Gamma is repurposed and reused here.
- Prior to the Chaos 6 fight, dialogue from Sonic's story is used.
- The ending now has dialogue.
Gamma[]
- The cut extra cutscene that plays should you exit Final Egg before completing it has been reinstated in the remake.
- Beta has a few lines of dialogue in the remake, whereas he was completely silent in the original.
- The entire Gamma's Story Mishap is resolved in the remake in a variety of ways.
- After Emerald Coast, instead of being taken to the past by Tikal, Gamma instead tries to use a teleportation device to return to Eggman's base, which ends up getting damaged by Big trying to get Froggy back, sending him to Angel Island instead.
- When Gamma gets to the jungle, he runs into Big again (as detailed above), and Froggy escapes his grasp, causing him to go into Lost World.
- After Lost World, Gamma now is transported to the past after seeing some vases depicting the origins of Chaos.
- Afterwards, when Gamma returns to the base, he fights Knuckles.
- A new scene is added before the E-101 mkII battle, which has no dialogue.
- The ending, while remaining the same as it was in the original, now features Amy watching Gamma die, as well as dialogue between the two.
Super Sonic[]
- When Sonic gets transported to the past, Tails and Knuckles also get transported there with him.
- After the past scene, Knuckles recounts the history of his people, and the trio notice that no time has passed afterwards.
- Knuckles joins Sonic and Tails in searching for the last Chaos Emerald.
- Cream and Vanilla are part of the group cheering Sonic on in the final battle against Perfect Chaos. Likewise, all three of the birds, not just the bird representing Gamma, are with Amy, and Big is shown giving Sonic the Chaos Emerald.
- After the Perfect Chaos battle, as Eggman leaves, he has a conversation with Orbot and Cubot as to why he isn't building Eggmanland on the destroyed city. Likewise, the heroes note that while the day is saved, Station Square still got destroyed.
- In the original story, Tails is the one who notices that Sonic is gone. In the remake, that role goes to Cream instead.

Non-Playable Characters[]
Image | Name | Description |
---|---|---|
Dr. Eggman | Yes, jest as we all feared, the mad scientist is back and more ruthless than ever before. In the past, Sonic and friends have managed to ruin all his evil plans, but are those days over?! A new battle has begun and this time, Dr. Eggman has at long last figured out how to harness the massive ancient powers of the 7 Chaos Emeralds to destroy the world! | |

While functional as a concept, ZERO has cruder construction and programming compared to his successors, lacking an Animal battery or any sense of self-preservation. Still, it is capable enough for retrieval missions, as he's been tasked with catching a certain bird... | |
E-101 Beta | The first of the E-100 Series designed by Dr. Eggman, and his most valued creation yet. Beta had more thought put into him compared to the later robot, Gamma, considering Gamma's intention was of mass-produced units. However, after Gamma proved worthy of Dr. Eggman's elite crew, Beta still was able to come aboard the Egg Carrier, though curiously, he hasn't been seen since... | |
Chief Pachacamac | The chief of the ancient Echidna tribe, and Tikal's father. Pachacamac was a ruthless and selfish ruler who would conquer lands in the guise of the betterment of his tribe. Upon learning of the Chaos Emeralds, he sought to take them by force, in spite of the rumors of their guardian... | |
Vanilla the Rabbit | The mother of Cream the Rabbit. Having an upbringing to be a noble lady, Vanilla has been upholding those values in her daughter through strict, yet kind, discipline.
