Gameplay[]
The game is an Action-RPG that plays similarly to Dissidia: Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest Heroes (With some RPG elements added in). It also takes some inspiration from Pokken Tournament but this is mostly used for the Pokemon and Yo-Kai creatures. Just like in most JRPGs, you level up over time with experience points. You can catch Pokemon in the overworld field and your Pokemon can level up every now and then.
Most of the game takes place on a patch of islands. You have to find dungeons on this island to find the items your party is looking for. These items can give you new abilities which can make your party stronger. Items like Erdricks/Loto's Armour, Black Materia and later the eight melodies.
Taking some inspiration from Sonic Heroes, you can switch between characters in your party of 3/4. This can make for some very creative strategies in taking out enemies.
While Nates story does feature a lot of story in comparison to Clouds story, it is more straight forward and liner in comparison to the latter. The overworlds are the same in all stories though you can explore more in Clouds story.
Story[]
Characters from different video game RPG franchises have been pulled from their games (Only Lightning and later Nate understand what's going on) and are forced to find sixteen melodies for Queen Mary (From Mother) for unknown reasons. In actuality, she has been poisoned by a villain and she wants them to combine the powers of the eight melodies to destroy him before she dies. Of course, this villain has sent a few others to go find these before they do.
Cloud Story -[]

Cloud Strife, being pulled from Final Fantasy 7, has very few memories as is and is confused as all heck. However, because he is suffering from lost of memory already due to Zack sharing some with him, he doesn't really know what he is other than being Cloud Strife, an ex-soldier. He finds Ash Ketchum from the Pokemon series and he informs him on his quest to find the eight melodies as well as his first Pokemon, Pikachu. He says he's working for this very weird guy but he says he can send them all back home. Cloud follows along, hoping that this weird guy can give him his purpose and helps Ash along his journey. The group later finds Sun/Moon and also Solo/Sofia who join them on their quest.
Later down the road, they fight against Erdrick, Nate/Kate, Red and Lightning, Eventually, they collect the 16th melody and bring it to a certain location and give it to the 'weird guy' who tells them that their services are no longer needed. He sends them on their way but they aren't given what they wanted back. Suddenly, dark clouds cover the sky, volcanoes erupt and the world begins to end around them...
Nate Story -[]

Nate, being pulled from Yo-Kai is entered into Carnia. He meets up with Erdrick, Terra, Lightning, and eventually Red. They fight against a series of monsters and villains in order to collect the melodies for Queen Mary.
Awakening story -[]
See also - TwilightXDawn/Awakening Story
After watching their home town burn (During Clouds story), the Hero, Mai and Issac all decide to go out and search for their parents. When they begin their quest, they accidentally stumble upon Jessica Albert who is looking for melodies. When they rest for the night, the hero is given a message about his quest.
Development[]
The game began development in late 2015 as a project for Pokemon and Dragon Quest's 20th and 30th anniversaries respectively. It was announced at the Fantendo Carnival Showcase in 2016 and later at a 9th anniversary showcase. Owner of Vision studio stated that he wanted to create a non-liner RPG with different elements to it. He was inspired by Chrono Trigger and other games in the sense that your actions, no matter how small, would change the way the story goes. He wanted characters to cause domino effects and that was a key-phrase used throughout development. Vision is thinking of making a few more of these games.
The Switch version a launch title
Soundtrack[]
Most of the soundtrack is made up of remixed music while another half is made up of original tracks. A lot of them are made by the franchises respective composers while a great deal of the original songs are made by Kevvviiinnn.

Reception[]
Pre- Release reception has been mixed due to awkward looking graphics and gameplay. Vision states that the graphics are only halfway done. Others are questioning the story as it seems like a rip off of Final Fantasy Dissidia. Vision admitted that some tropes would be taken from Final Fantasy Dissidia while others would be taken from Dragon Quest and others from Pokemon. However, original would play a big role. Earthbound/Mother fans made their voices heard through the internet when Ness (Or whatever Mother character was confirmed) was removed for the game as Vision states "They couldn't find a role for him".
The game was released to positive reviews and a lot of the praise going to the story. The game was released with mixed to positive reception. Lots of the praise went towards the interesting story and character personalities. They also praised the gameplay stating that, while it feels different, it manages to pull all of the gameplay styles from the 4 respective series together to make one game. There was a lot of critism aimed towards how series like Yo Kai and Mother are more or less thrown in as despite the game hyping up a Yo Kai vs Pokemon duel the game actually features no Yo Kai to collect. Many also noticed how Nate feels out of character in the game while Kate is treated as just a female clone despite being her own seperate character in the actual franchise.
The game sold over 100K in less than 42 hours making it Vision studio's quickest selling game. As of March 3rd 2017, it has sold over 900K making it their highest selling game that is not a collection.
Trivia[]
- The opening of the game has text pop up on the screen to give background on what happened leading up to that point. This is callback to the first 3 Final Fantasy games (On the Famicom).
- There are only 8 melodies in Mother 1/Earthbound Zero/Earthbound Beginnings. However, Mother 2 has 8 more melodies that didn't really do much.
- You are encouraged to explore more in Clouds story. However, in Nates story you are recommended to go from quest to quest. To make sure that you do this more than often, each quest is closer to each other in Nates story while you have to go long distances in Clouds story.
