The Sega Dreamcast was released in North America on September 9th, 1999, and competed against the PlayStation 2, Xbox, and GameCube. It was discontinued in 2001, and was Sega's final major system (with their true last console being the Japan-only Advanced Pico Beena, which saw releases until 2012).

The system uses Virtual Memory Units (VMUs) to store data. The system also uses GD-ROM discs to store games to curb piracy.
