Dark Matter is a recurring villain (and probably Bigger Bad of) in the Kirby series. Dark Matter has first appeared in Kirby's Dream Land 3. A knight who seems to be his species has debuted in Kirby's Dream Land 2 and the species debuted in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards.

Appearances[]

Canonical[]

Kirby's Dream Land 2[]

In Kirby's Dream Land 2, Dark Matter serves as the primary antagonist of the game, having stolen the Rainbow Bridge that connected the various Rainbow Islands. He is also shown to have possessed King Dedede, a trait that would become prevalent among Dark Matter and Kirby Antagonists in general in future games.

Dark Matter's fight is broken up into three phases; the first phase against the Possessed King Dedede who uses attacks much like those seen in Kirby's Dream Land and Kirby's Adventure, although it is notable that he can also become enraged causing him to attack rapidly. The second phase has Kirby facing off against the Dark Swordsman a form that Dark Matter assumes, during this phase and the subsequent phase, Kirby gains access to the Rainbow Sword a weapon that's capable of harming Dark Matter. After damaging Dark Swordsman enough, Dark Matter assumes its true form, the cycloptic, dark mass with orange protrusions (purple in the original artwork).

After Dark Matter is defeated a second time it appears to be destroyed.

Kirby's Dream Land 3[]

Dark Matter is the secondary antagonist of Kirby's Dream Land 3. He's fought in Hyper Zone. Dark Matter has two attacks:

  • Shooting the purple/yellow parts on his body to Kirby
  • Zapping Kirby with a lightening beam
  • Kirby also takes damage upon contact with Dark Matter

After being defeated, Dark Matter teleports away. The screen flashes and Zero appears. Oddly, Zero will sometimes summon clones of Dark Matter, but they don't attack.

Kirby: Planet Robobot[]

In the Sub-game Meta Knightmare Returns, Dark Matter returns as one of the game's penultimate Bosses along with Queen Sectonia. This is not however the true Dark Matter from the previous two games and is instead a clone created from that Dark Matter.

The clone is an imperfect recreation of Dark Matter as the Haltmann Works Corporation was unable to discern the two separate forms and as a result the two became merged into a single form that incorporates attacks from both. This Dark Matter also seems to possess a different sword the original instead resembling the Rainbow Sword that Kirby wielded.

Its fight is significantly more varied than it was in the past two games as Dark Matter can attack from multiple directions and use new variations of traditional attacks in particular the Fiery Orbs from the original fight. Dark Matter is also able to summon Dark Spheres which bounce around the arena.

Fanonical[]

Dark Matter will appear in the fan series Kirby's Adventures.

Trivia[]

  • Dark Matter Clone and Sectonia Clone are the only bosses in Kirby: Planet Robobot's True Arena that are fought as part of the same round
  • It is confirmed that the Dark Matter Kirby fights in the Hyper Zone in Kirby's Dream Land 3 is the same entity from the original, it's unclear if Dark Matter was able to reform naturally over time or required the aid of Zero to do so.
