Civilization 6 is an upcoming sequel to the Turn-Based Strategy Series Civilization Series. It advances further on the series staples and allows for more user capabilities as well as introducing more nations, more diverse terrain and an array of updates to the advancement types.

Gameplay

Civilization 6 like its predecessor Civilization 5 is a Hexagonal Board Play, Turn-Based Strategy. The player takes turns moving units, building facilities, arranging agreements with other nations, scouting out new land, attacking in combat, expanding borders & advancing technologically, culturally, religiously & commercially.

The player can move their units a certain amount of spaces each turn, many units are hindered by areas such as hills and forests which would cause slower travel. Optimizing movement is vital as the player should aim to scout out new land to build new cities and expand their territory.

The game takes place over 9 Eras as opposed to the previous 8, the new Era is the Enlightenment Era and is place in between the Renaissance and Industrial Eras in addition the Future Era has been renamed the Information Era. The Eras (in order) are as follows; Ancient, Classical, Medieval, Renaissance, Enlightenment, Industrial, Modern, Atomic & Information.

Often the player will come into contact with other civilizations which will force them to make allies, remain neutral or possibly annihilate the rival nation. However there are repercussions to wiping a nation off the face of the planet and how other nations view you depends on how you, the player acts.

In addition the player may also build Wonders, powerful buildings that greatly enhance the player's civilization, these buildings can increase wealth, scientific research, production, food income, culture or religious power. Each Civilization also has their Key Wonder which if they build will give them added benefits, this means the player may aim to build their key Wonder but at the same time block other civilizations from their Key Wonders.

Playable Nations

As with every Civilization Game there are a number of Playable Nations ranging from Ancient now extinct nations such as the Ancient Egyptians and Romans to Modern Nations such as Germany & Brazil. In Vanilla Civilization 6 there are 65 Playable Nations with 2 additional DLCs that each add 10 more Nations.

Terrain

In Civilization Games, various Terrain Types can provide advantages and disadvantages to both the player and the enemy's units. In Civilization 6 there are 8 Terrains; Grassland, Plains, Desert, Roughlands, Tundra, Snow, Wasteland & Volcanic. Each have their own special features that are applied depending on what's necessary. Overall Volcanic is the rarest for Earthern Maps while Plains is the most Common.

The first feature of each Terrain is a Water Based Tile which cannot be worked however can be ignored by late game units and units with upgrades. In addition the second set of features is dependent on the Terrain itself. Grasslands, Plains & Roughlands have plant based impedements. Desert, Wasteland & Volcanic have Attrition impedements. Tundra & Snow have hidden impedements.

Terrain Features
Grasslands Marshlands Jungle
Plains Lake Savannah
Desert Flood Plains Glass Field
Roughlands Swamp Mossfield
Tundra Frozen Lake Layered Rock Formation
Snow Hot Spring Caverns
Wasteland Radioactive Lake Acid Pools
Volcanic Gem Deposit Volcanic Vents

In addition to these features; Grasslands, Plains, Roughlands, Tundra & Wasteland can support Forests which can be used for production and food although reduce movement by 1. Desert terrain can have Oasis which provide more Food, Snow terrain can provide Ice Fields which provide more Production and Volcanic terrain can provide Igneous Mines which provide more Production and less food.

Social Policies & Culture

In Civilization 6 like in Civilization 5 there are Social Policies and Ideologies. Social Policies are Early to Mid Game buffs to players who gather large amounts of Culture, Ideologies are Late Game attributes that heavily enhance the player's city and can have an impact on their happiness and the happiness of neighbouring nations. There are 18 Social Policies and 6 Ideologies. The player can unlock and attempt to complete as many Social Policies as possible but may only have 1 Ideology at a time.

Social Policies cannot be recalled and once a Social Policy is invested in, it cannot be taken back. Ideologies however can be recalled to be changed as several factors in Civilization 6 are influenced by a chosen Ideology. As such Ideologies can be recalled although this leaves a country in a state of anarchy for 2-12 turns depending on the Game Length. After which they receive half the amount of culture they invested into their previous ideology.

Social Policies

Ancient Era

  • Tradition - Food
  • Liberty - Population
  • Honour - Army

Classical Era

  • Aesthetics - Culture
  • Control - Barbarians

Medieval Era

  • Piety - Religion
  • Global Unification - Democratic Power

Renaissance Era

  • Advanced Agriculture - Food
  • Advanced Aesthetics - Culture
  • Commerce - Gold

Enlightenment Era

  • Exploration - Movement & Sight
  • Rationalism - Science
  • Advanced Commerce - Gold
  • Advanced Military - Army

Industrial Era

  • Patronage - City-States
  • Heritage - Wonders
  • Advanced Education - Science

Ideologies

  • Authoritarian - Production
  • Democracy - Food
  • Monarchy - Gold
  • Oligarchy - Culture
  • Kirtarchy - Science
  • Theocracy - Religion

When gaining culture it is best to have less cities as more cities results invoke a higher culture requirement to unlock another part of a Social Policy or Ideology. Also when the player has an Ideology, neighbouring country's ideologies may influence the player's population and if they become unhappy they will demand the player change their ideology to suit their desires.

Buildings

Across the various eras the player can build many buildings in their cities, these buildings allow for the player's cities to grow and thrive, while some buildings can be replaced by wonders that do the same and more. There are a total 79 Buildings that can be built in each city (provided the Wonder equivalent hasn't been built).

In addition to producing Units, Buildings and Wonders the player can have their cities produce Gold or Science throughout the turns or work towards a Diplomatic Event. Doing these will help the player by rewarding them with various culture, gold, tourism and/or science.

Trivia

  • An addition utilized in Unit Movement, the player is now able to select a set of up to 7 units and move them as a group, this allows for more in depth thinking about movement.
  • The 20 Additional Civilizations from the DLCs are not real Nations with the first set being titled, "Children of the Land" and the second set being titled, "Mythical Conversion".
