The Checkpoint Flag, also known as the Midway Flag or the Halfway Flag, is a flag found in the Super Mario series. They are located halfway through every level and if the player dies they will respawn at the flag instead of the start of the level. They are similar to the Midway Gates in Super Mario World.

Before being passed, the Checkpoint Flag depicts Bowser's face on a black background. After passing it, the checkpoint turns red with the Mario symbol on it. If passed as Small Mario, the flag will restore Mario to Super Mario.

Appearances

New Super Mario Bros.

Checkpoint Flags debuted in New Super Mario Bros. as white flags with Mushrooms on it. Unlike later appearances, they were not stuck into the ground and instead appeared suddenly on the DS' touch screen when passed.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii

Checkpoint Flags reappear in New Super Mario Bros. Wii instead as black flags with Bowser's face on them, compared to the white flag with a mushroom of the original. When passed, the flag changes to the emblem of Mario, Luigi or a Toad depending on who passed it first. Instead of suddenly appearing, the Checkpoint Flags are found stuck into the ground on the level. This is the first time that passing a Checkpoint Flag would restore Small Mario into Super Mario.

Super Mario Galaxy 2

Super Mario Galaxy 2 was the first game outside of the New Super Mario Bros. series to include the Checkpoint Flag. They function similar to their appearance in New Super Mario Bros. Wii. The checkpoint flag sometimes appears more than once in a level or in some case, not even once in a level.

Super Mario 3D Land

The Checkpoint Flag retains the same uses as previous appearances. Restoring Small Mario to Super Mario and respawning the player at it's position if they die after passing it.

New Super Mario Bros. 2

In Coin Rush mode, touching the flag will grant will add 50 or 100 seconds to the timer instead of granting the player 2000 points.

New Super Mario Bros. U

Instead of flapping beside the pole, the flag is tied around the pole. It retains the same uses.

Super Mario 3D World

Checkpoint Flags reappear in Super Mario 3D World serving the same function as they did in previous 3D Mario platformers.
