The Chaos Emeralds are powerful gems in the Sonic series. It is said that they hold mystical energy that can grant extraordinary powers to anyone who uses them, as long as they gather all seven. Their energy also maintains balance on Earth in a sense; they hold the continents together and prevent islands from sinking to the bottom of the ocean.

In ancient times, there was a large tribe of echidnas who guarded the emeralds and their main source of stability, the Master Emerald. Most of them were wiped out by the beast known as Chaos, and eventually, it got to the point where Tikal (the princess of the tribe) had to seal herself in the Master Emerald with him. The seven gems were named the Chaos Emeralds after Chaos, and they would forever be known as a source of brilliant power and energy.

The powers the Chaos Emeralds can grant a living being varies between games. Usually, they give the user invincibility and increased power, speed, etc., but they can also be used to alter the space-time continuum (as seen when Shadow uses Chaos Control) or power machines like the Death Egg and Metal Sonic.

Appearance[]

The Chaos Emeralds are multi-coloured jewels, typically there are seven all together although some depictions only have six and others, eight. The colours of the Emeralds also vary from game to game, the canonical set are; Blue, Green, Purple, Yellow, White/Grey, Red & Cyan. In some games there is a Pink Emerald usually in place of the Blue or Cyan ones, in addition some games due to limitations present all the Emeralds as the same colour.

The shape of the emeralds has been fairly uniform across the series appearing as hexagonal from above with a cone-like shape leading to a point at their bases. Some depictions have the top view as octagonal instead of hexagonal, however this is fairly rare. The Emeralds are also fairly large, being often held by Sonic and co. in the palm of their hands and being of a similar size to said hands.

When added to the creature, Chaos the Emeralds appearance changes slightly becoming more ellipsoid in their appearance, losing their sharp edges.

The Chaos Emeralds are also known to have powered down states as a result of being used by powerful beings or abused by machinery, in these powered down states they're typically a grey-ish colour with only a faint hue indicating their true colouration.

Function/Abilities[]

The Chaos Emeralds are generally regarded as magical objects, their powers vary significantly although the most defining ones are their ability to imbue particular characters, primarily Sonic, with a Super Form which possesses nigh invulnerability and super speed as long as they have sufficient rings. The Emeralds are also known to be able to power machinery greatly enhancing the machine's innate abilities.

Some characters, most notably Shadow have also been able to use the Emeralds either individually or in pairs to the extent of being able to time travel or teleport. There are also abilities that individual emeralds possess such as large-scale teleportation and being able to repel powerful monsters such as the Time Eater. It is often stated that a single emerald on its own would give a user great power however this is rarely shown in the games.
