Games of the umbrella genre. Started by 1337doom (tbc)'s Elite Fisticuffs, Exotoro (tbc) later coined the name "baby waffle", and changed it to "umbrella" two years later.

The genre is conventionally considered challenging to explain. Umbrella games usually involve characters from various series crossing over in a single game, as if under a metaphorical umbrella of the creator's interests. They often have original branding and consist of crossovers between series and forms of media that would not normally be expected to cross over in a video game, thus disregarding the game's theoretical believability and emphasizing author appeal instead. An umbrella game is not necessarily required to fill this criteria, however, as the creator's project may widely consist of generally more believable crossovers (with the occasional oddball or two) that they happen to have such interest in. Thus, a crossover platforming game between Super Mario, Crash Bandicoot, Mega Man, and Celeste could be considered an umbrella game in the same way a fighting game featuring characters from Kirby, Star Wars, Adventure Time, and The Incredibles with the Angry Video Game Nerd as an additional fighter would be.

Note that classifying an article as a Umbrella Game does not excuse it from the basic standards of Fantendo; it will still be deleted if it is poor quality.
