Call of Duty ZOMBIES: Eternity is a spin-off of the best-selling Call of Duty series, being focused on the critically-acclaimed Zombies mode that first appeared in 2008's Call of Duty: World at War. The game is a successor to the stories of Treyarch's "Nazi Zombies" and Infinity Ward's "Call of Duty ZOMBIES" modes - specifically the plot threads from Call of Duty: Black Ops III, Call of Duty: Zombies, and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare - and crosses over the two universes in this non-canon sequel. The game was primarily developed by Existence Software, with Treyarch and Infinity Ward assisting in making sure continuity between the original titles is consistent, and published by Activision.

In addition to six brand new Zombies maps, the game also includes the maps that appeared in the aforementioned Call of Duty: Black Ops III and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, these being: Shadows of Evil, The Giant, Der Eisendrache, Zetsubou no Shima, Gorod Krovi, and Revelations from Black Ops III; Origins from Call of Duty: Black Ops II (a remaster of which was included in the "Zombies Chronicles" DLC package for Black Ops III); and Zombies in Spaceland, Rave in the Redwoods, Shaolin Shuffle, Attack of the Radioactive Thing, and The Beast From Beyons from Infinite Warfare. Players who pre-ordered the game were also given a code to download a remastered version of Nuketown Zombies from Call of Duty: Black Ops II.

The GobbleGum mechanic from Black Ops III returns, and all maps from Infinite Warfare now have GobbleGum dispensers placed around them to replace the Fate and Fortune Cards that could be used on them originally. Additionally, all returning maps have had several subtle easter eggs added to them; the Infinite Warfare maps have also had "traditional" easter egg songs added to them which can be activated by pressing the action button on three items located around the map.

Gameplay[]

As with all Call of Duty titles, Call of Duty ZOMBIES: Eternity is a first-person title in which players fight enemies using a variety of different firearm and melee weapons. Maintaining most gameplay elements from previous Zombies modes, the game follows a round-based format, with an increasing number of enemies (these primarily being the titular zombies) spawning per round, while also having their health and speed increased as the game progresses. Defeating enemies or repairing barriers earns the player points, which can be spent on weapons located around the map, the Mystery Box or Magic Wheel, traps, perks, and other utilities.

The main objective of the game is simply to survive an everlasting game, though every map (besides The Giant) has a main quest easter egg that can be completed by performing various outlandish steps, which is the primary source of plot within the game. These steps vary per map and there is generally little-to-no indication of how to perform them besides some rare, and vague, quotes from the player characters. A sub-objective in every map is to turn on the power, which can be used to purchase perks and certain traps. The way to turn on the power varies from map-to-map:

  • In Origins, the player must activate six generators located around the map by paying 200+ points (the number increases by intervals of 200 depending on the number of players in the game) and remaining within a small area for a short period of time while Templar Zombies attack the player and, should all players in the vicinity be downed, the 115 Conversion Generator itself. Each generator powers a small area of the map.
  • In Shadows of Evil, perk machines must be powered by shocking electrical panels located beside them whilst in Beast Mode, which can be activated once per round at one of the many ritual sites scattered across the map.
  • In Der Eisendrache, The Giant, Gorod Krovi, Rave in the Redwoods, and Attack of the Radioactive Thing there is a power switch located in an area of each map that powers the entire map once flipped. In Attack of the Radioactive Thing, the player must locate the power switch's handle before it can be activated.
    • In Zombies in Spaceland and Shaolin Shuffle, there are multiple power switches that each power a small section of each map. In Zombies in Spaceland there are five, while there are only four in Shaolin Shuffle.
  • In Zetsubou no Shima, players must first power up two temporary generators located in the two labs by filling them with 115-infused water before they can enter the main bunker in-between the labs. Once the bunker is opened, the power can be turned on by clearing a vent in an underwater area in order to retrieve a part that can then be used to permanently turn on the power.
  • In Revelations, the player must pay 500 points at one of four Corruption Engines in order to begin the power sequence. Similar to the 115 conversion generators in Origins, the player must then survive for a short time while corrupted Keepers, Furies, or both attempt to defeat them. Each Corruption Engine has a portal that leads to the central building (Nacht der Untoten) that becomes active once the Corruption Engine is powered up.
  • The Beast From Beyond and Nuketown Zombies do not feature power switches, with the power being active upon starting the game.

GobbleGums[]

Call of Duty: Black Ops III first introduced the GobbleGum system, which reappears in Call of Duty ZOMBIES: Eternity. The GobbleGums, developed in-universe by Dr. Monty, are small candies that grant certain powers to the user either for a limited amount of time or once activated. There are five types of GobbleGums, separated into either "Classic" or "Mega" GobbleGums: Normal, Whimsical, Common, Rare, and Ultra-Rare. Classic GobbleGums are unlocked as the player levels up, while Mega GobbleGums must be created using vials of liquid 115 that can be acquired through normal play or by purchasing them with real-world currency. The player has a limited number of Mega GobbleGums, but can acquire Classic GobbleGums indefinitely.

Characters[]

Unlike Call of Duty: Black Ops III and Infinite Warfare, players can choose which character they will play as at the beginning of each match. Players are limited to four choices upon until the map's main quest has been completed or, if the player has Nuketown Zombies downloaded, after playing the map once. These characters all play identically, though have different quotes and interact with other characters differently. Nuketown Zombies features four unnamed and silent characters from the CDC and CIA that can not be played on in other maps.
