Species Origin Koopa Troopa
First Appearance Super Mario Land
Koopa Troop

Bombshell Koopas (originally known as Nokobons, also known as Boomba Troopa) are variants of Koopa Troopas with a bomb for a shell that appear in Super Mario Land. They act similar to red Koopa Troopas, pacing back and forth on a platform and turning at ledges. If they are jumped on, they will hide in their shell, which will explode a few seconds after. This makes them similar in function to Bob-ombs, although they cannot be moved and their blast radius doesn't defeat any nearby enemies.

In Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, normal Koopa Troopas appear, and Bombshell Koopas are replaced by a Buzzy Beetle-like variant, Noko Bombette. They also appear in a microgame based on Super Mario Land in WarioWare Gold.

Appearances[]

Super Mario Maker Lunar[]

Bombshell Koopas appear in Super Mario Maker Lunar as enemies that can be placed in levels. They aren't initially available in the level editor, and instead must be created by merging a Koopa Troopa and a Bob-omb together. Once it is first created, it is "unlocked" and can be selected from the editor directly from then on.

Bombshell Koopas act like standard Koopa Troopas, and can be jumped on to make them crawl into their shells, which can be kicked. However, instead of emerging from their shell after a few seconds, the shell will start flashing before it explodes. This explosion has the same power and radius as that of a Bob-omb's, allowing it to defeat enemies and destroy blocks around it. The shell, when kicked, will also explode on contact with a wall it would otherwise bounce off of, or when it touches a fire-based object such as a fireball, Fire Bar, or Lava Bubble. Bombshell Koopas can be Captured in the Super Mario Odyssey style, which allow the player to duck into their shell or spin inside it while sliding forward, much like a regular Koopa. However, ducking for five seconds or hitting a wall while spinning causes an explosion. This also causes the Bombshell Koopa to vanish, forcing the player out of the Capture.

Interestingly, Bombshell Koopas take on a black-and-gray appearance in this game in all styles, making it closer resemble how they appeared as sprites in Super Mario Land rather than official artwork, which depicts them as standard yellow Koopas with black shells. They are also noticeably angry.

Trivia[]

  • Bombshell Koopas were not referred to as such overseas until the 3DS Virtual Console port of Super Mario Land within the digital manual. Their Japanese name is ノコボン (Nokobon), a portmanteau of 「ノコノコ」 (Nokonoko, Koopa Troopa) and 「ボン」 (bon, the Japanese onomatopoeia for an explosion). Noko Bombette was named after this.
